Kodiaks steal two points from Bandits By Murray Green

The Brooks Bandits were the best team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. That is, until the Camrose Kodiaks robbed Brooks of four points. Just when Brooks was feeling comfortable with a 2 -0 lead at home against the Kodiaks on Nov. 20, Camrose scored five straight goals to steal the victory. Down 2-1 after 40 minutes, the Kodiaks netted four in the third period to complete the grand theft. Veteran Nolan Marshall led the bears with two goals, while Sam Jardine, Rylan Wiest and Luc Vandale chipped in with one each. "It feels fantastic to beat Brooks again. We wanted to send a message to them that we are not going to be a p ushover and we are always going to go h ard until the end. We had a go od third period and it is good to come back on them," said Nolan. "Both teams played the night before and we were tired. We looked at each other and said this is attainable. It was ours to go o ut and grab it. We just dug a little deeper than they did." Goalie Matt Gibney stopped 37 of 39 shots and Camrose had 28 shots on goal. Two recent losses left the Bandits with a 2 1-5 record, which leaves them tied for first overall with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. The Kodiaks also faced Fort McMurray in a t ough weekend. The Oil Barons edged Camrose 4-3 score on Nov. 19. "We can beat any team in this league and there is n o doubt about it," said Nolan. "A little lapse was the only difference. We can't let off the gas pedal. It is a huge confidence booster to know we can play and beat the best teams." Wiest, Landon Kadatz and Craig Bokenfohr provided the offence. A five minute lapse in the second period was the difference in the game as it cost the Kodiaks three tallies. The Oil Barons outshot the Kodiaks 12-5 in the

frame. Goalie Brayden Hopfe stopped 26 of 30 shots, while Camrose only managed 21 shots. Nolan has been playing well lately. "It is t hat time of year when you need to step up before the break and play well," he said. "My job is to play well defensively and provide some banging and crashing. If I can chip in by scoring goals, then that only helps the team even more. Goal scoring isn't my thing, but I like to help out now and again. When you score a f ew points, it gives you added confidence and it led to some power play time. My role is being an energy guy. I enjoy helping out anyway I can." The Kodiaks shut down the number one offensive team in the league, the Brooks Bandits, in a l ow scoring 3-1 game on Nov. 18. "The Camrose Kodiaks have always been built around defence first," explained Nolan. "We have struggled defensively, but we knew they are an offensive team and we had to be aware of that and not let them have too many chances. We are confident in our defensive zone, we just needed to get back to doing what we do best." Ty Clay and Connor Mailey opened the scoring for Camrose. When Brooks cut the lead in half, Vandale scored three minutes later to stop Brooks' momentum before it could hit high gear. "Our line's role is to hold off the other team from scoring and if we score that is a bonus. Right now, we are playing at both ends of the rink. Playing well defensively always adds to chances on offence. The less time you spend in your own defensive zone provides you with more time to go on the offence." Brayden stopped 31 of 32 shots in the Camrose net. The Kodiaks face the Bonnyville Pontiacs and St. Albert Steel in back-to-back home games on Dec. 2 and 3.
