S

o, here’s the truth. We were wondering what we could possibly write about to make our readers sit up and pay attention. Sure, there are many ways to go about it. We could pen daring opinion pieces to get a debate going or we could talk about taboo topics such as sex, drugs, rock and roll. Then, we remembered that it was the holidays for a majority of you! With that in mind, we thought it’d be apt to talk about something that some of you might be interested in but never dared try. Extreme sports. The challenge was to not just scratch the surface of the topic but to deep dive and hear it from the experts themselves! Luckily for us, we managed to secure a couple of interviews from some of the world’s esteemed sportspeople. In our ‘Career Chat’ (pages 44 and 45), we spoke to worldfamous Hungarian aerobatics pilot and world champion air racer, Peter Besenyei. Yes, the same man who has, for many years now, spearheaded the Red Bull Air Race and doesn’t bat an eyelash while doing impressive aerial manoeuvers and breathtaking tricks. What does one wear for sports? Does sporting attire always have to be in black or blue? Most definitely not! We give you no excuse to dress up and look good even while running, jumping, kicking and sweating it out in our ‘Fashion Trend’ (pages 28 and 29) and ‘Guys’ Stuff’ (pages 34 and 35). But what good is working out to maintain your fitness if you’re not #cleaneating right? Find out more about the #cleaneating movement in our ‘Wellness’ section (page 65). We also interviewed young and hardworking top skateboarder Farris Rahman, who has recently joined the league of Red Bull’s stable of sportspeople, big names that you’d definitely recognise such as Sebastian Vettel, Thierry Henry and Neymar. He debunks all myths that skating is a ‘rebellious’ sport and dishes on the art of it. Get the real deal in our ‘Arts & Culture’ (pages 48 and 49). On top of that, we’ve packed six pages with pictures and details on the various types of extreme sports available in the world. Which ones are the most dangerous? Who are some of the world’s most famous extreme sportspeople? What does Tony Hawk (yes, THE Tony Hawk) have to say about putting his life on the line for his career? All of that are in pages 38 till 43. Are you ready for an adventure? Brace yourselves!

Taylor’s University Launches Book

Inspired By Marginalised Children

Taylor’s University launched its first community inspired book entitled ‘Almost HOME’, consisting of a compilation of inspiring stories from marginalised children. The initiative is a collective effort by the university’s students and staff spearheaded by the Taylor’s University Centre for Languages. “We applaud our students and staff who selflessly shared their time and talents to develop this book. The objective of the initiative was to share these first hand stories depicting various realities laced with hope and life values with Malaysia’s youth nationwide. Through this project, Taylor’s University has also been able to humanise learning by getting our students to learn outside the classroom. This is aligned to the university’s goal of producing productive graduates in the local and global community,” said Taylor’s University Deputy Vice Chancellor, Pradeep Nair. The project began when students from Taylor’s University Centre for Languages were tasked with bringing community stories to the attention of today’s younger generation. The students kick-started the exercise by enlisting the assistance of teachers from schools which engaged with marginalised children to organise an essay competition. Fifteen most impactful personal stories written by these children were selected and adapted into short stories for the book. Illustrations were then developed by Taylor’s University students and staff to reflect the essence of the stories.

Paul Walker’s Brothers To

Finish ‘Fast and Furious 7’

The late star Paul Walker’s brothers will stand in for him to complete the seventh movie in the blockbuster franchise following the actor’s death. Walker had completed much of his part in filming ‘Fast and Furious 7’ before he died in November last year aged 40, in a high-speed car crash in California. Walker played Brian O’Conner, an undercover federal agent. His brothers Caleb and Cody will replace him to finish shooting for the film. “Our family experienced an unthinkable shock in November. We had to take time to grieve Paul, the brother we love and lost, and to figure out if we should move on with our film. We came together and all felt the only choice was to continue. We believe our fans want that, and we believe Paul would want that too. Paul had already shot his dramatic scenes and most of his action for ‘Fast and Furious 7’, and it’s among the strongest work of his career,” they said in a statement on the film’s Facebook page. They added, “We have resumed shooting and now welcome Paul’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, into our ‘Fast’ family. Caleb and Cody are helping us complete some remaining scenes for their brother and fill in small gaps left in production. Having them on set has made us all feel that Paul is with us too.” The film is now due to be released on 10th April 2015.

SPOTLIGHT

An Alternative Ending For “And So, Kids..”

For a decade, popular TV series ‘How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM)’ was so loved that it became ingrained in our personalities. We make jokes about them and even spoke like them, quoting them word for word, whether we realised it or not. What makes HIMYM fans so attached to Ted, Marshall, Lily, Barney and Robin? Maybe it’s because the cast was like a group of friends that the fans ‘hung out’ with every week. As it is, the separation proved to be hard but with a finale that broke (some) hearts and frustrated the rest, it drove conversations on social media platforms into a frenzy. Fans, especially, are calling it the worst series finale ever! The good news is that HIMYM co-creator Carter Bays just announced that they’re releasing an alternative ending! “Here’s a bit of news: 16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too,” he explained. So get your hands on the complete series DVD box later this year for the alternative (and perhaps happier) HIMYM ending. MAY 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

Lewis Hamilton Wins The Malaysian Grand Prix

Laureus World Sports Awards 2014 in Malaysia At a glorious awards night, the stars of world sport were honoured by Laureus at their annual World Sport Awards, staged this time in Malaysia. Hosted by ‘Sherlock’ star Benedict Cumberbatch, with the help of a Mike Tyson-impersonating Jamie Foxx and German actor Daniel Bruhl, who played Niki Lauda in ‘Rush’, a who’s who of sports stars past and present were there to applaud the 2014 recipients of an award now recognised to be one of the most prestigious in the global sporting calendar. Among many superstars of sports present on the list included Mark Spitz, Seb Coe, Nadia Comaneci, Daly Thompson, Marvellous Marvin Hagler, Johan Cruyf, Ruud Gullitt, Fabio Capello, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Bobby Charlton, Kapil Dev, Steve Waugh, Emerson Fittipaldi, Sean Fitzpatrick, Tony Hawk, Michael Johnson, Edwin Moses and many more. The two main awards, sportsman and sportswoman of the year, went to four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel and American swimmer Missy Franklin who, after winning an unprecedented six gold medals at last year’s world swimming championships, became at 18, the youngest ever winner of the award. On pole position, Lewis Hamilton dominated the Malaysian Grand Prix to take Mercedes’ second victory of the season. Hamilton was joined on the podium by his team-mate Nico Rosberg and Infiniti Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel. Former world champion Fernando Alonso finished fourth despite colliding with Daniil Kvyat of Toro Rosso, followed by Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. Caterham’s Marcus Ericsson crashed in the first qualifying session, losing control of his car and hitting into a wall. After the truly challenging race, Hamilton said, “Today was just incredible, how much, firstly, it rained before qualifying and then during the session it was very, very tricky out there I think for everyone. Particularly at the end it was almost impossible to see anything. During my last lap I just couldn’t see a thing behind (Force India’s Nico) Hulkenberg. I couldn’t see where the track went, didn’t know where the corners were, when to brake.” Vettel had different opinions altogether. Even though he was only fractionally behind Hamilton in qualifying, Vettel suggested Mercedes was the team to beat Sunday. “I think Mercedes as a team has the best package. They’ve done a very good job across the break,” he told reporters.

FREE BROW BRUSH

REVIVE DRY MASCARA

The next time you replace your mascara (every three to six months to protect your eyes from bacteria), save the wand and run it through soap and water for a free brow spoolie!

Just add two to three drops of contact lens solution or eye drops and stir the tube with the wand. Voila, as good as new! Of course, the rule of thumb is not to pump your mascara because it pushes air in and dries out your mascara quickly. Also, if your mascara is too old, trash it because it is not worth saving.

QUICK FRESH HAIR Dry shampoo can be expensive. Try using a pinch of corn starch and massage it gently on your scalp until it absorbs most of the oil. If you think that using corn starch is yucky, baby powder works just as well too. It may be a little messy and can make your roots look like you have dandruff if you don’t massage it thoroughly. So take some time to rub it in completely with your fingers.

DRY NAIL POLISH IN A JIFFY Just dip your painted nails into a bowl of ice water and wait until it no longer feels sticky.

FAST DRYING HAIR Don’t fancy going out with damp hair and no time to blowdry? Use paper towels to soak up excess water instead of regular towels. It’s effective and doesn’t frizz your hair up.

SHARP SHADOWS Magic tape is your best friend! Line the tape from the corner of your eyelid to the edge of your eyebrow for a perfect guide. Use your finger or a clean brush to gently blend the harsh edges of eyeshadow to soften the look. Perfection!

EASY GLOW Don’t fret when you’re out of your usual BB cream. Mix 1:1 ratio of foundation and moisturiser for fresh and dewy looking skin. Use a moisturiser that comes with SPF+++ so you can skip applying sunscreen separately to save time. Fabulous!

EVERLASTING SEXY LIPS

Make your lip colour last longer by blotting the first layer with tissue paper then gently dust a light layer of loose or translucent powder over your lips. Finally, add another layer of lipstick with a lip brush for that precise ‘done-up’ pout.

CLUMP-LESS LASHES FOREVER

Some new mascaras come with a wet and heavy formula. This may weigh your lashes down and cause clumping. A simple tip is to wipe off the excess product on the brush with tissue before application. You’ll get those beautifully separated lashes every time!

MAKE YOUR PRODUCTS WORK OVERTIME

Remember these formulas. Lipstick can double up as a cream blusher; lip balm works great to tame unruly brows; and matte brown eye shadow can be used to fill in those scanty brows and contour your face too. Multitasking your products will help you keep your makeup bag light and save your money too!

STOP OILY SKIN!

MAY 2014

Myth

or Fact?

We’ve heard so much of the dos and don’ts for oily skin but some of the quick fixes and regimens don’t work as claimed.

W

ith all the promises made to seduce you into buying products, it’s bound to get confusing and ultimately make you unsure of what to believe. Here are a couple of common myths and facts that you should know about to help maintain clear skin.

Myth I scrub my face every day to keep my skin clean.

It’s time to stop this habit because over-exfoliating your skin can strip skin of its essential oils and possibly spread bacteria. It’s recommended to only scrub two to three times a week to remove dead skin cells.

Myth Oily skin doesn’t age as easily.

We wish this was true but the fact is that every person’s skin will age as time passes. It may appear less visible on the skin because of the oil but premature ageing can still happen if it’s not cared for. So take note ladies!

Fact Skin becomes drier with age.

It’s true, all skin becomes drier with age because your body naturally produces less moisture and natural oil over time. So, be glad that you have oily skin type!

Myth Sunscreen will cause more oil production.

Not all sunscreens will increase oil production on your face. Most of the new and sophisticated formulations won’t clog pores! Some even contain oil-absorbing microsponges to help keep skin matte.

26

Myth

I don’t need to use moisturiser. Oily skin needs hydration too. Drying out oily skin may cause your body to produce even more oil. Remember, cleansing, toning and moisturising are the three basic skincare steps for all skin types. All you have to do is to pick the right moisturiser.

Fact Oily skin can be controlled.

Definitely true. With a proper skincare regimen and lifestyle, shiny skin can turn to healthy, glowing skin. Using products that come with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs), and pairing them with a regular application of clarifying mask can not only help reduce the appearance of oily skin but also improve skin texture.

TRY B.LIV ABSOLUTE MATTE This innovative skin-saver helps combat excess sebum and control surface shine while purifying and refreshing your complexion. THE HISTORY OF THE SLEEVELESS UNDERSHIRT

MAY 2014

Wife-beater’s Before it became a popular style, the origin of the word ‘Wife-Beater’ came from the stereotypical American image of a man wearing a white undershirt while physically abusing his wife.

I

t was also heavily portrayed in movies such as ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ in 1951, ‘Raging Bull’ in 1980, ‘Once Were Warriors’ in 1994 and etc. In 1997, these tank tops were associated with popular subcultures such as street gangs and hip hop. Now, it’s simply known as a type of sleeveless shirt that can be worn as innerwear or outerwear.

The Big Hoo-Ha

An uproar sparked when a website (www.wifebeaters.com) was launched in 2000, selling men’s and women’s tank tops imprinted with ‘Wife Beater’ logo and offered shirts half priced to convicted abusers. The founder, James Doolin explained that he did not advocate violence and the site should be seen for its humorous side. His wife-beaters website also hosted other features such as music titled ‘Smack My B***h Up’ and ‘Wife Beater Hall of Fame’ page, spotlighting famous wife batterers

36

| CAMPUS PLUS

past

like Ike Turner and Mike Tyson. This certainly drew the ire of anti-domestic violence groups. Some found the site extremely offensive while others considered it harmless. The National Organisation for Women President, Kim Gandy, said that it belittled domestic violence. It makes the idea of wife beating as something that’s OK to joke about. After numerous complaints to the FBI, Texas Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau, the site was finally removed from the internet in 2009.

A New Era

The term wife-beater is rarely used these days but the shirt itself has become a common attire for both men and women in this era. Available in many colours and designs, it’s a garment that’s much loved by the runways and the streets, especially to beat the summer heat.

ARE

E M E R T EX ORTS P S WORTH THE RISK?

EXTREME SPORTS ARE ALSO KNOWN AS ACTION SPORTS, AGGRO SPORTS OR ADVENTURE SPORTS. THESE ACTIVITIES OFTEN INVOLVE A HIGH LEVEL OF ‘DANGER’ E.G. EXTREME SPEED, EXTREME LEVEL OF PHYSICAL EXERTION AND EXTREME HEIGHT WHICH REQUIRE HIGHLY SPECIALISED GEAR.

C

ontrary to popular belief, extreme sports is not something that’s new to the world. Dating back to the 1950s, it started from the days of bullfighting, motor racing and mountaineering. Back then, only these activities were widely known as sports. The rest were considered just games. Imagine that! If we lived in the 1950s, you’d have to be a bullfighter to be known as an athlete! During the 1970s, David Kirke, Chris Baker, Ed Hulton and Alan Weston founded The Dangerous Sports Club of Oxford University. They first garnered wide public attention when they invented ‘modern day bungee jumping’ and effectively changed the perception that bungee jumping was a novelty activity. The sport later made it to television with the first ever televised leap from Colorado’s Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge. Needless to say, it

38

| CAMPUS PLUS | MAY 2014

became a craze for young people and is now an established industry for thrill seekers. Then came the 1990s when extreme sports really took off and gained popularity. Previously not sanctioned by schools, extreme sports was picked up by marketing companies to promote the multisport event developed by ESPN called the ‘X Games’. By that time, it was clear that extreme sports tended to be more solitary than traditional (with the exception of rafting and paintballing). In fact, unlike basketball and football players, most extreme athletes tend to individually work on their craft without the guidance of a coach. Thus, it paved the way for individuals to push their respective limits and physical boundaries. The first ‘X Games’ were successfully held in the US.

CREEKING

HOW EXTREME IS EXTREME? Handgliding, skydiving, cliff jumping, biking (BMX, mountain biking), rock climbing, skateboarding and white water rafting are some of the more popular extreme sports. Extreme sports by nature can be extremely dangerous and is conducive to fatalities, near-fatalities and other serious injuries. Sometimes it would even involve treading along the brink of death. However, it’s these elements of imminent and inherent danger in these sports that the audience and the

athletes themselves find entertaining to a certain degree. Here are some of the world’s most dangerous extreme sports: 1. CREEKING - This is a form of extreme white water kayaking. In the 1980s, as more durable kayaks were built, extreme kayakers used their ride to plunge off steep waterfalls. The adrenaline rush brought about by the plunge is further increased by the possibility of slamming onto jagged rocks or being sucked below by the deadly force of the churning water.

TOW-IN SURFING

2. BASE JUMPING - This is the most dangerous recreational sport in the world, with one death recorded for every 2,317 jumps. Jumpers throw themselves off one of base structures such as buildings, antennas, spans, bridges or cliffs. Parachutes are then deployed for a safe landing. Unlike skydiving, you have a much shorter time of reacting in case a parachute fails. If the parachute does fail, death is almost certain. 3. TOW-IN SURFING - Surfers love to drop off from the highest wave crests, some of which are as tall as skyscrapers. Timing is everything as the waves move so quickly that it is extremely difficult to paddle onto

them. However, the invention of the jet ski has solved this problem by being able to tow the surfers to the right spot at the right time. Surfing stars like Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama can attest to the rush brought about by this technique. Of course, now that they are able to reach the top of the wave, they now face other dangers such as being thrown onto sharp reefs or being trapped underwater in a vicious roll when a wipe-out occurs. 4. FREE SOLOING - Rock climbing with all the necessary gear is already a technically difficult sport. Imagine removing all the safety ropes, harnesses and other equipment that can aid you in case you slip up. That is what free soloing is all about. Free soloists need to be able to support their entire weight using just their fingertips and toe tips, while maintaining intense concentration to stay on

ICE CLIMBING

the face of the rock lest they fall off. One tiny mistake and it’s game over. 5. WINGSUIT FLYING - Imagine flying off a tall structure like a superhero. Wingsuit flying entails jumping off a perch and gliding down to the ground while wearing a special suit. These suits have an estimated glide ratio of 2.5 metres for every metre of descent. Only those with experience of at least 200 skydives are allowed to try this sport. It is that dangerous. 6. ICE CLIMBING - This involves scaling formations of vertical ice, such as frozen waterfalls and cliffs covered with ice. The old method used for the sport is step cutting, which entails chipping out ice with an ice pick to create a foothold. Today, cramp-ons invented by the British in the early 20th

VOLCANO SURFING

century allows climbers to fasten this toothed claw to their climbing boots. This has since been the basis of all advancements made in the sport. Of course, the aim is to speed up the climbing time and minimise the chance of getting frostbite because of the cold. 7. VOLCANO SURFING - This sport entails climbing up a volcano, then surfing down its side by sliding using plywood boards. The boards are reinforced by steel, metal or formica. You can do it while sitting down, though veterans of the sport can do it upright. It sounds easy enough, until you start hitting sharp volcano rocks. 8. CAVE DIVING - The famous marine scientist and explorer Jacques Cousteau pioneered this sport. It entails diving into underwater caves. And that is where the danger lies. In

CAVE DIVING

CALEB MOORE

case your equipment fails, the cave makes it hard for divers to make a quick ascent to the surface. Strong underwater currents are also notoriously unpredictable. Visibility is also a problem because any sudden movement will stir up sediments and disorient the diver. 9. HIGHLINING - We have all seen the tightrope act in the circus. Some clown will cross a high and tightly taut wire while using a balancing pole with a net below to catch him in case he makes a misstep. In highlining, the wire is also located high up in the air. But that is where the similarity ends, as in highlining, there is no balancing pole, no net to catch you in case you fall, and the wire is not stabilised and taut. Crossing a slack wire is infinitely more difficult than a taut one. Combine that with the absence of a safety net, the danger level is increased exponentially.

10. KITE SKIING - As if snow skiing was not exciting enough, some extreme sportsmen have invented kite skiing. It entails the use of a traction kite and a harness to pull a skier across the snow and into the air. While this is ideal in wide-open fields or frozen lakes, there are some who have taken the sport even further and have kite skied downhill along snow-covered mountainsides. * Source: http://www.therichest.com/expensivelifestyle/entertainment/the-top-ten-most-extremesports-in-the-world/

BUT IS IT REALLY DANGEROUS? Spurred by wide media coverage, extreme sports are no longer defined by their counterculture and non-traditional roots. Still, a large majority of the audience would think

HIGHLINING

twice or three times before taking it up themselves. Parents especially would have major reservations about supporting their kid’s decision to make any extreme sport his or her hobby. In 2013, millions watched as 25-yearold Caleb Moore attempted a back flip on his snowmobile during the Winter X Games, only to wind up in an ambulance after being knocked unconscious during a crash landing. His death a few days later immediately raised real questions about the lure of such events to young ‘daredevils’, the appeal to viewers and the responsibility of organisers.

TONY HAWK

H

aving said that, we hear from the legend Tony Hawk himself, the world’s skateboarding poster boy (or rather, man) and ambassador of the so-called dangers of extreme sports.

CAMPUS+ What were some of the most serious injuries you have sustained? TH: I’ve had one broken bone (elbow), countless scrapes and sprains. But my most serious injuries were two concussions. I woke up and discovered that my front teeth were gone (the first time) and fake ones gone on the second time.

42

| CAMPUS PLUS

CP: The ‘900’, your most amazing trick, looks dangerous! Is skateboarding dangerous? TH: It’s a competitive sport but I don’t want to say that it’s dangerous. Skateboarding is not about being a daredevil; it’s mostly just to push conceived limits. You don’t cheat death, you just want to make possible what people think is not possible. Of course, getting hurt is part of the process, but it’s very calculated. You just need to know how to get out of a dangerous situation when you challenge yourself.

CP: Any advice for the aspiring skateboarders and extreme sports athletes? TH: Learn the basics, learn to fall, have proper safety equipment, learn perseverance and follow your heart. Today, 46-year-old Tony Hawk is still known as one of the top skateboarders in the world. In his 17-year career, he won more than 70 skateboarding contests, started his own skateboarding company (Birdhouse) and even has a successful line of video games and skateboarding videos. He’s also currently spearheading the Tony Hawk Foundation (founded in 2002), where he provides grants and technical assistance for new parks, especially in low-income areas.

TAKING IT TO THE RACE TRACK

PETER BESENYEI

WHEN YOU FLY THESE AIRPLANES YOU HAVE TO STUDY THEM MORE THAN THE TECHNICIANS. THE MAIN THING IS TO HAVE A SAFE RACE AND LEARN FROM IT

B

orn on 8th June 1956, Peter says he first became interested in flying and had dreamt of flying when he was a child. In 1921, he watched the World Aerobatic Championships, which fuelled his determination and later cemented his decision to pursue his dreams. At the tender age of 15, he flew a glider for the first time and by the time he turned 20, he entered his first flying competition by piloting a glider. It was as though he was meant for it as he finished in second place. He went on to become an aerobatic pilot, specialising in free-style aerobatics and won several titles in national and international championships. In fact, he also spurred a number of inventions of new original flying moves such as the ‘knife-edge spin’. In 1982, he won his first Austrian National Championships gold medal. In 1995, two gold and two silver medals and he was named the most successful aerobatics pilot of his time. In 2001 Peter flew upside down under the Széchenyi Chain Bridge that spans the river Danube in Budapest, a manoeuvre that became a standard in air races today. It was that same year that Austrian energy-drink company Red Bull asked him to help develop the concept of an air racing competition. Today, he’s a driving force behind the creation and development of the Red Bull Air Race and is sometimes referred to as the ‘Godfather’ of the sport because of his pioneering work in perfecting the high-speed, low-level format. “The Red Bull Air Race is a fantastic opportunity to fly low at high speeds. I really enjoy the racing and the way we fly. It’s a great challenge and a great adventure. There’s nothing comparable anywhere”, he said. The first Red Bull Air Race was held in 2003 in Zeltweg, Austria. After only two years, the competition became a worldwide organisation of the Red Bull Air Race World Series! Needless to say, Peter was a top title contender in the first five years of the sport, taking first overall in the inaugural 2003 season, second three years running from 2004 till 2006 and third in 2007. However, like any other competition, there are potential dangers of air racing. In fact, the process of choosing the most daring pilots with skills and courage to handle the extreme physical and mental challenges of the air race is a long and careful one. For Peter, he cannot stress enough that safety must always come first. He remarked, “Like any other activity, aerobatic flying should be done the right way, my rule is to never show more than what I can do. When you fly these airplanes you have to study them more than the technicians. The main thing is to have a safe race and learn from it.” To date, he has flown all the aircraft used in the Red Bull Air Race, including the Zivko Edge 540, the Extra and the MXS. He progressed to become one of the most popular sportsman in his native Hungary for years thanks to his unrivalled flying successes. He was also

closely involved in the development of a special new plane called the Corvus Racer that had its debut in the middle of the 2010 season. But what about the other things that he does? He says that he’s currently a test pilot for the Hungarian Aviation Office and a flying instructor for aerobatic pilots on Zivko Edge 540. On the days when he’s not busy chasing clouds, Peter also enjoys car racing, skiing, sky diving, fishing and photography. Oh, you know, like any ordinary 58-year-old man. The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be back in the skies with an exhilarating seven city, seven-race series. For the first time ever, Malaysia will be hosting Southeast Asia’s most thrilling motor sports competition in the sky. The historic race will be held on 17th and 18th May (Saturday: Qualifying and the Challenger Cup, Sunday: Finals) in the majestic city of Putrajaya, where the race track for the aerial action will be happening at the heart of the city; the sprawling, scenic 600-hectare man-made Putrajaya Lake.

THE WORDS SPELLCHECK WON’T AGREE WITH

MAY 2014

THE

{LINGO} TANGO! If your parents are confused each time you text them or speak to them, who can blame them?

I

t seems like today’s younger generation have implemented their own language which only they and their peers can understand. To everyone else, it might sound almost foreign, or as some might put it, similar to a chicken trying to understand a duck. Wouldn’t you agree? Take a look at these examples of the new lingo:

Arvo

Gone were the days where we used full, functioning words. During our parents’ time, instead of arvo, one would actually say ‘afternoon’. Between then and now, we’re not sure how afternoon got shortened to noon (although it still made sense) and now, Arvo? How did that even come about?

Chillax

A bit of a no brainer because this one’s not that hard to figure out. We remember a time when our parents would say, rest or relax or even rest and relax, but never chillax. Chillax is basically a combination of both chill and relax. By the way, by chill, we don’t mean ‘stick yourself into a fridge right now’. It basically just means ‘take it easy’ or in some cases, ‘calm down’. Who in the first place thought of combining the words chill and relax? We’ve no idea but chillax, alright? It’s no biggie!

Jacking

Dope

The term doesn’t mean ‘something Jack or someone else is doing that’s so typically Jack’, neither is it short for jacking off, which means something else that’s obscene altogether. Jacking, in our day, is short for hijacking, which, to us, is ‘translated’ to stealing. Let’s not blame our parents’ for being confused when we say things like, “But he was jacking my style!”.

In the world of hip hop, dope is a common term for a drug or drugs taken for recreational purposes. Beginning from the early 90s, dope became an informal term for ‘a stupid person’. However, in the world of Gen Y, when mentioned in passing e.g. “Yo, that shirt is dope!” or “Daft Punk’s comeback album is so dope!” , it means ‘cool’ or ‘very good’. Yes, people. Like what it does to the human race, evolution involves language too.

Havoc

YOLO

Funny how people these days have grown so accustomed to using ‘YOLO’ at the end of almost every suggestion or decision. For example, “Yeah, I think I’ll go skydiving although I’m a little acrophobic. YOLO!” or “I can’t take spicy food but sure, pass me that Sriracha sauce. YOLO!”. As strange as it sounds, YOLO is actually an acronym for ‘you only live once’. It’s kinda like wanting to imply, “Let’s just do it!”.

As strange as it sounds, YOLO is actually an acronym for ‘you only live once’

Your average dictionary will tell you that ‘havoc’ means destruction, devastation or disorder, all of which sounds nothing like what it means in Gen Y lingo. ‘Havoc’ is usually used to describe something amazing or unbelievable. Ways to use it would be, “Wow, the turnout for FMFA 2014 was havoc! I heard there were about 85,000 people!” or “What? J-Card day at Mid Valley Megamall, again? Havoc!”. Something like that. We know, we know. So dope, right? MAY 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

rowing up a shy and socially awkward boy, Farris Rahman never thought he’d ever make it this far into skateboarding. But made it, he has, and even he has several accolades to show for it! 19-year-old Farris Rahman first started skateboarding at a very young age. By the time he was six years old, he had already participated in countless local and global competitions. 12 years later, he’s ranked amongst the top 50 skateboards in the world. Today, his accolades have earned him a coveted spot in Red Bull’s stable of sportspeople, big names that you’d definitely recognise such as Sebastian Vettel, Thierry Henry and Neymar. What’s the best part about being Farris, you ask? We think that his most outstanding quality is the fact that despite having everything going for him, he’s still a down-toearth teenager. A hardworking one, at that. Why do we say so? Find out in our exclusive interview with the ‘sk8erboi’!

CAMPUS+: For those who are not already in the know, NEVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT YOUR DREAM IS TOO BIG OR UNACHIEVABLE BECAUSE IF YOU WORK HARD FOR IT, YOU CAN DEFINITELY DO IT!

tell us a little bit about what you do? FR: I’m 19 years old and I’m a skateboarder. CP: What was your first skateboarding memory? FR: I started skateboarding when I was four years old. I saw my brother playing with a skateboard and I thought it was pretty cool. CP: Has extreme sports, especially skateboarding, always been your thing? FR: I’ve tried a couple of other sports over the years but it didn’t gave me the same satisfaction as skateboarding does. CP: What was your experience like, from your first competition? FR: I remember my first overseas competition. I was really excited! However, I didn’t really take it as a serious competition because my main purpose was to have fun but somehow, I was noticed by the crowd (maybe because I was small and fun-sized) and that actually got me an invitation to Phuket for another skateboarding event. That was when I realised that skateboarding would give me the opportunity to travel places. So, that’s cool. CP: What do you think is the biggest misconception about skateboarding? FR: People think that it’s a very rebellious sport and only the punks and gangsters do it. The fact is that I’ve seen so many skateboarders from various backgrounds. It’s definitely wrong to stereotype skateboarding as a sport for the rebellious.

OPPOSITE PAGE | FARRIS RAHMAN, THE 19-YEAR-OLD SK8ER WONDER

CP: Has this misconception changed over the years? FR: Yes, definitely. In US, skateboarding is very much

celebrated and recognised as a professional extreme sport. Though, in Asia, the awareness is picking up rather slowly thus the old mentality is still there. CP: How many hours do you put into practising? FR: If I have school, most of my weekdays are dedicated to my studies. I’ll try to squeeze in about two to three days for practise. However, during school holidays, my practise days can take up to five days. CP: How do you stay fit for a competition? FR: As much as I would like to say that I go to the gym, I really don’t. I’m the original couch potato (laughs). I don’t really do much. I guess how I stay on top of the game is by not smoking and not consuming alcohol. CP: What are some of the personal goals that you are currently working on? FR: My current goal is to compete in the professional skateboarding competitions in US or Europe because I want to be exposed to opportunities overseas. I hope to be able to achieve that within two to three years. CP: How are you planning to achieve your goals? FR: At the moment, you’ll need an invitation from the organising committee to be able to join such competitions and to get an invitation, you’ll need to make a name for yourself first. Thus, I’m working on joining as many overseas competitions as I can, in hopes of making an impression and making the cut for the professional skateboarding competitions. CP: Taking skateboarding out of the question, what do you do for fun? FR: I tell lame jokes, haha! Other than that, I do like video games, reading books about space, etc. Pretty much what a typical guy likes. CP: How do you strike a balance between attending class and skateboarding? FR: It’s not easy but I give my 100% in everything that I do. Different people have different ways in juggling things but I guess you’ll just have to find your own ways to work it out. CP: Any advice for those interested to pursue skateboarding like you? FR: Never let anyone tell you that your dream is too big or unachievable because if you work hard for it, you can definitely do it!

As the sports guests and sports celebs arrived on the glamorous blue carpet, we pulled American swimming superstar, 18-yearold Missy Franklin aside and asked her who she was most excited to see. With a beaming, million-dollar smile, she simply said, “Everyone! I’m really very grateful and so pleased I was able to come - it’s during my spring break so I am not missing any school!” She bagged the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award later that night. Two other exciting young sports stars of their generation, who have proved worldbeaters despite their age, were also honoured at the 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards. Cleaning Products Again! If you’ve taken a trip down the cleaning aisle at the supermarket recently, the prices of cleaning products will shock you. Or if you’ve ever studied the ingredients of household cleaners, you’d probably notice the types of harsh chemicals in it. Also, let’s not forget that some of these commercial cleaners emit fumes and are in no way environmentally friendly.

Wood floor cleaner

You need: A few drops of dish soap and one gallon of warm water. Method: Mix and damp mop.

A SESSION WITH SOAP

unplugged

by jean ng

Son.Of.A.Policeman S

on.Of.A.Policeman (SOAP) is a classic all-Malaysian band where individuals from diverse backgrounds are united by their love for music. Founded in 2012, the current line-up consists of Axl on lead guitar and vocals; Tan on bass and vocals; Mikha on drums, rhythm guitar and vocals; and Joshua on lead vocals and guitar. When asked to divulge on the mystery of the band’s name, it is actually a tribute to the courage and ingenuity of a founding member who pretended to be the son of a policeman to get out of a potentially disastrous situation. When asked to describe themselves individually in one word, Tan considered himself a lucky person who has taken the opportunity to continue pursuing his interests at the age of 23. Joshua calls himself ‘blessed’ because he believes that God guided him on his path to achieve his dreams. Mikha talked about how pure serendipity allowed him to bump into his bandmates and he’s glad to be able to connect with people who love music. Axl, who is closely associated with the word ‘soloist’ because of his achievements as an accomplished soloist prior to joining the band, now finds it more enjoyable playing with his band mates.

Possessing different musical backgrounds and styles have made SOAP pioneers of a unique genre known as indie rojak where opposing vibes seamlessly come together in perfect harmony. Their songwriting process is organic so when a member encounters a mental block, the others would help provide a fresh perspective and eventually create something entirely different. Inspiration would randomly flow from jam sessions like, “How a drop of water becomes an ocean or how a seed grows into a tree,” described Tan. SOAP is a remarkable band that makes bossa nova, rock and jazz work together as demonstrated in their song, Colours of the Skin. The combination of Mikha’s vast technical knowledge, Joshua’s feeling-based ability to express music as emotions, Axl’s amazing muscle memory playing skills and Tan as an allrounder, makes them the ultimate dream team. Some of their musical influencers include Eric Clapton, The Roots, Darren Ashley, The Whitest Boy Alive, Paul Gilbert, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay and Pharrell Williams. Their dreams would be realised if they could collaborate with any one of them. They hope to one day be able to play at large university campuses, Urbanscapes,

SOAP

Crossroads or even Wembley Stadium. One of their favourite performances was when they played at the Laundry Bar in January. Their biggest achievement to date was when they came in fifth at the Global Battle Of The Bands (GBOB) 2014 Malaysia National Qualifier last year. All of them would love to pursue music as a full time career provided that the income generated is sufficient but most of them feel that they would still need day jobs. “It’s very hard to make it into the music scene unless you are professionally trained,” said Mikha. Tan hopes to open a music school, Axl wants to earn more money and Mikha wants to film music videos while Joshua dreams that SOAP is recognised internationally. They hope that local artistes could banish the selflimiting notion that it’s impossible to make it in Malaysia. Their advice for aspiring bands is to not only pursue their dreams to become famous but to see music as an expression of art. SOAP has an EP coming out before Christmas called ‘Sleepless in Subang’ and they are filming a music video for ‘Colours of the Skin’. ‘SOAPies’ (supporters) can head over to Merdekarya where SOAP regularly plays and look out for their mini YouTube feature series called ‘Soundstruck’ a collaboration with the Wanted Symphony.

her horizons. On Glee, she is known as Rachel Berry, the Broadway-bound emotional train wreck who’s blessed with a golden voice. With so many show-stopping performances in a multitude of genres, we were genuinely intrigued when we heard that she’s venturing into being a recording artiste! Lea Michele released her debut album, Louder, a polished contemporary pop record filled with emotional ballads that will touch your heart in ways you won’t expect. If You Say So is one of those ballads. Written following the death of Cory Monteith, the song is without a doubt the most personal song on the album. Knowing the tragedy of Lea Michele and Cory Monteith’s real-life love story, it’s hard not to be overcome with emotion listening to the song. Cue the goose bumps and tears please.

vocal execution by lead singer Isaac Slade, the song struck a chord with listeners around the world. Thanks to this single, the title track of their 2005 debut album, along with their other chart-topping hit, Over My Head (Cable Car), The Fray won over audiences with their powerful words and enjoyed incredible commercial success. Nine years later, the alternative pop-rock quartet from Denver offers a surprisingly diverse combination of musical styles in their fourth album, Helios. A synthesis of high energy, upbeat tunes and emotional, piano-led ballads such as Hold My Hand, Same As You, Break Your Plan show that the band is able to stay true to their roots while offering something different at the same time.

2013 was the year of Pharrell. Sure, he’s been gracing the pop charts for more than a decade, composing beats and singing hooks for everyone from Snoop Dogg and Jay Z to Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. But last year, he finally capped his transition to centerstage stardom with Daft Punk and Robin Thicke. G I R L plays like a concept album, the concept being that Pharrell likes girls a lot although he’s never pushy or gross about it. The opening track, Marilyn Monroe, says it all, followed by what we think is the album’s most charming song, Lost Queen. Oh, Pharrell, you are indeed like a dream. With loving piano melodies and surprisingly deep lyrics wrapped around 13 songs, it’s no wonder that they were even featured in an episode of Glee. We personally loved This is the New Year, Land of Opportunity, and I Really Want It. Also, who can forget their epic collaboration with pop diva Christina Aguilera for Say Something? A Great Big World has truly made their grand entrance into the big leagues of music with a loaded gun of pop music and unlimited happy bullets. You know what? We think they’re here to stay.

In 2003, when Home was released, it was criticised pretty heavily. Not surprisingly since it’s Bone Thugs n Harmony and Phil Collins after all. In case you don’t know the story, Bone Thugs n Harmony decided to sample Phil Collins’ Take Me Home for a rap track called, Home. Phil Collins was of course aware of it and decided to get involved. He ended up singing the chorus himself and even appeared in the music video for Home. Bone Thugs n Harmony later made him an honorary member of the group and gave him his own nickname, ‘Chrome Bone’. collaboration with Aerosmith was one that impacted and eventually changed the world of music. It had since gone on to spawn various cover versions.

Nelly and Tim McGraw – Over and Over (2004)

Eminem and Elton John – Stan (2000)

Run DMC and Aerosmith – Walk This Way (1986) Walk This Way became the original rap/heavy metal video crossover song. With their gold chains and Adidas gear, Run DMC were the first rappers to earn gold, platinum and multiplatinum albums. They were also the first to have their music videos played on MTV and the first to grace the cover of Rolling Stone. Their

When Eminem, who may have a Guinness world record for the artiste who curses the most in a single song, joined forces with Elton John, jaws dropped. Some considered it nothing but an incredible publicity stunt because Eminem was facing all manner of criticism from the ‘Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’ over his lyrics at the time. His response? He took openly gay artiste Elton John to the 2001 Grammy Awards stage with him and performed Stan with Elton John singing original duet artiste Dido’s lines. Good times!

A rapper/R&B artiste and a country singer? Really? By 2004, Nelly was well established as an artiste that could do both rapping and R&B singing. Who would’ve thought that he’d take a chance and jump into the works of the country genre? He scooped up Tim McGraw for a ‘slow jam’ type of song that, believe it or not, became a hit. So much so that it made it to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week it was released. Unreal! Up next: Rumour has it that Swedish DJ/ producer Alesso, Swedish House Mafia’s Sebastian Ingrosso, One Republic Ryan Tedder and Elton John are working on a collaboration together. Dance anthem of the century perhaps?

SNSD GIRLS’ GENERATION

As you could imagine, 2NE1 has bounced back bigger and better with the release of their new album, Crush. Rolling out individual songs with a series of flashy music videos, the idol girl group is lighting up the South Korean music charts as we speak. The first single, Come Back Home is absolutely ace, followed by the equally impressive Happy. Not to be confused by Pharrell’s Happy, of course! We hear that fellow label mate G-Dragon a.k.a YG Entertainment’s idol boy group BIGBANG’s leader helped pen the words to Good to You. But the cherry-on-top was probably 2NE1 leader CL’s solo, MBTD.

After being away from the limelight for almost a year (remember I Got a Boy?), SNSD Girls’ Generation has finally released something for fan girls and fan boys to swoon over. Their six-track EP, ‘Mr.Mr’ comes packed with electro and R&B infused songs that SONEs (as SNSD Girls’ Generation fans are lovingly called) can dance and sing along to. Both acoustic-type tracks such as Goodbye and Wait a Minute is laced with their sugary sweetness although Goodbye was definitely the more ‘standout’ song between the two. We also loved the ballad, Back Hug, which we can’t seem to stop putting on repeat. This could be one of the girls’ most unforgettable EP yet.

P/S: Catch the girls at Stadium Negara on the 24th (Saturday) for a mind-blowing show!

TOHEART

4MINUTE

Toheart is made up of Woohyun and Key a.k.a the lovechild of K-Pop idol boy groups INFINITE and SHINee. The moment we heard their first track, the minute-long Intro, we were sold! And by that, we mean that we were completely taken by the instrumental magic e.g. guitar, drums. Needless to say, we were further swept off our feet with their main single, Delicious. Who knew that the oddly-matched duo could pull off such a distinct musical style, with Woohyun’s full vocals and Key’s raspy voice? The boys then wrapped up their 1st Mini Album with the folksy Departure, although we hope that this doesn’t really mean goodbye. We could use more ‘ear candy’ from them in time to come!

Previously, they’ve left quite an impression with their unique fashion and musical concepts. So, you could say that this release was quite a highly anticipated one! We’ll give you a few reasons why we weren’t disappointed by 4Minute World. The girls managed to distinguish themselves from other ‘manufactured’ K-Pop girl groups with Whatcha Doin’ Today. Our saying (no disappointments whatsoever) holds true with Come In, which was perhaps slightly raunchy but catchy nonetheless. Their comeback was then topped off with Thank You, which was beautifully accompanied with an acoustic guitar. Thank You? No, thank YOU, 4Minute!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

MAY 2014

wellness by lainey

#cleaneating, ARE YOU DOING IT RIGHT? You’ve probably heard of eating clean/clean eating or have seen the hashtag #cleaneating in passing on social media, but do you know what it is exactly before jumping on the bandwagon? We’ve got the deets on #cleaneating, what it really is and whether you’re doing it right or wrong.

WHEN DID IT START

HOW TO REFRESH YOUR DIET

GUIDELINES FOR A CLEAN SUCCESS

Believe it or not, clean eating is not a new concept. Those involved with health, fitness or nutrition have been practising this for years! The term ‘clean eating’ started in the mid-90s when grocery chains cleaned up their stores by removing unnecessary items. As such, they did away with non-household products and things with short shelf lives. It was also due to the fact that health food stores were attracting more and more customers because consumers were starting to pay attention to how foods were made and what they were made of. Clean eating is a lot like that – removing unnecessary elements in your diet and replacing it with healthier options!

Sure, the idea of #cleaneating can seem daunting and maybe a little overwhelming at first but once you get into the pattern, you won’t look back. Your body will thank you for it, starting with these easy steps:

You can’t get healthy without eating healthy and that should be your focus – general good health. Not weight loss.

It’s as easy as eating a banana and some nuts instead of eating a banana nut muffin! You don’t need to purchase an expensive clean eating cookbook, plant an entire vegetable garden in your backyard or go broke buying organic everything. You just need to opt for foods that haven’t had anything added to them and haven’t had anything valuable taken away. Many processed foods are full of excess sodium, sugar and fat! It’s best if you make healthy homemade versions of your favourite meals e.g. mac and cheese and granola bars. You also need to learn to study the ingredients on a can, jar, box or bag. That way, you make better choices when you choose foods that are as close to their natural state as possible i.e. real and recognisable ingredients. If you can’t pronounce the ingredients, you probably shouldn’t be putting it into your body.

WHAT IT MEANS TO EAT CLEAN

SIGNS YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG

If you’ve always wanted to refresh your eating habits without having to eat salads all the time then you’re in luck! This is because eating clean is all about eating more of the best and healthiest options in each of the food groups. The primary principle of eating clean is to replace processed foods with fresh and natural foods. You’d need to embrace foods like vegetables (full of vitamins!), but you’d also need to maintain a staple diet of fruits, whole grains, healthy proteins and some fats. It also means cutting back on refined grains, added sugars, salt and unhealthy fats a.k.a bad fats i.e. saturated fats in butter and cheese because they ‘pollute’ your body. You don’t have to count calories and you don’t even have to give up your favourite meals. You just need to make them better and healthier than cafés or restaurants – with a dash of common sense. Do it like the grocery chains did and just start cleaning up!

There’s no direct definition for what clean eating is but there are specific indications for what it isn’t. Do you think you could be doing it wrong? Here’s one way to tell; #cleaneating is not any of these things:

Chowing down on a seemingly ‘healthy’ sandwich prepared at a restaurant.

A diet because it’s a diet watch and a lifestyle choice.

Groceries with the terms zero trans-fat, low sodium, sugar free, fat-free, etc.

To be confused with a workout regime or a weight loss concept.

Making your own meals but dousing it with pre-made, store-bought sauces.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Plan your meals properly by including lean protein, complex carbohydrates and good fats in each meal. Learn to make your own meals, the less ingredients the better. Avoid junk food as well as sodas and high calorie juices. Up your daily fresh fruit intake. Ditch all processed and/or refined foods e.g. sugar, candies, white flour, white rice, etc. Always opt for ‘whole foods’ e.g. meat straight from the butcher, whole grain rice, etc. Drink at least eight cups of water per day.

We won’t lie – your taste buds will go through an adjustment period but your body will react positively to it in no time. You can expect fat loss, increased energy, clearer skin, shinier hair and better sleep, just to name a few. Also, if you want an overall ‘clean’ regime, you might want to start working out to complement your #cleaneating. Oh, one more thing, did we also mention that eating clean is less expensive? Score! DISCOVERING KEDAH

MAY 2014

Finding Solace In The

‘Abode of Peace’

K

edah Darul Aman, located in the north-western part of West Malaysia, is also known as the ‘Abode of Peace’. Locals, however, know it best as the ‘Rice Bowl of Malaysia’ as the Kedah paddy fields produce more than half of the country’s home grown rice supply. It’s also one of the oldest states in Malaysia and has a wonderful history behind it. Kedah’s ‘story’ can be traced from prehistoric times at the archaeological site of Bujang Valley. From the early maritime trade from India to the written works of the early Chinese pilgrims and early Chinese records, its history is rich. In present day, what’s most interesting is the story behind

rice. The State is bestowed with unique natural beauty that’s surrounded by much greenery and rolling fertile terrain, which is perfect to grow rice as well as make for a picturesque view. Of course, it’s not all about rice. Kedah is also one of the best places in the country to get traditional Malay delicacies such as serunding, dodol durian, gulai nangka, sayur keladi, pekasam, nasi ulam, kuah rojak and garam belacan. Where do you find these yummylicious indulgences, you ask? None other than Pekan Rabu (translated it means ‘Wednesday Market’).

Pekan Rabu is a well-known attraction among both the locals and tourists. The business complex is not only the pride of Malay entrepreneurs in Kedah but also the pride of all Malays in Kedah. From its humble beginnings as a weekly market operating from an attap-roofed shack, it has since expanded into a multi-storey arcade selling a wide range of traditional delicacies, handicraft products and even apparels. In fact, here’s a little known yet surprising fact: the fourth Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, was once a trader in Pekan Rabu! Drop by for a visit whenever you’re in town. It’s open from 8am to 9pm daily, even on public holidays and festivals.

As for its tourist attractions, well, there are just too many to count but here are a few gems not to be missed: ¿¿ Pedu Lake, a huge man-made lake that covers an area of 75 km². ¿¿ Pulau Langkawi, an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea. Also known as the ‘Jewel of Kedah’. ¿¿ Bukit Hijau Recreational Forest, a recreational park with a beautiful series of waterfalls amidst lush greenery. ¿¿ No.18 Lorong Kilang Ais, off Jalan Pegawai, otherwise known as the ‘Birth House of Tun Dr. Mahathir’. ¿ ¿ The Royal Boat House, a museum that contains several boats that were used by the former rulers of Kedah to visit their subjects.

If that doesn’t interest you enough, Kedah also borders Thailand namely Bukit Kayu Hitam. There’s a checkpoint and busy duty-free shopping complex located near the border. Across the border to the north is the town of Ban Dan Nok in the district of Sadao, Songkhla province in Southern Thailand. Once you cross the Thai border into Sadao, you’ll be well on your way to Bangkok via Hat Yai on the toll-free National Highway 4. Of course you’ll need your passport and other travel documents for that!

Interested? Getting to Kedah is fairly easy. There are numerous domestic flights from KLIA provided by Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Airasia. They fly daily to and from Sultan Abdul Halim Airport. Alternatively, you could also travel from Langkawi to the mainland and vice versa through its boats services. While on land, you could travel by bus, private car or train, which are speedy and convenient too. MAY 2014 | CAMPUS PLUS |

The restaurant offers an intimate setting of Arabic music as well as a dramatic interior décor that includes traditional Syrian style, inviting you to experience the warm welcome of a Middle Eastern atmosphere. With the kitchen helmed by a chef with 12 years’ experience in the culinary industry, the dishes are served in generous portions, allowing you to taste a variety of rich flavours at an affordable price. To really spice up our palate, we were first served the Shawarma Chicken as an appetiser. It is grilled chicken shavings mixed with cucumber and tomato slices and topped off with garlic mayonnaise and chili powder. Dressed in a tortilla wrap, the Shawarma Chicken leaves a fiery flavour in the mouth. More excitingly, this Middle Eastern ‘sandwich’ only costs you RM5.50! The most flavourful of the dishes was the main dish, the Mandi Lamb. The word ‘mandi’

I AM MALALA AUTHOR: MALALA YOUSAFZAI

Malala Yousafzai relates her life-changing moment in a riveting memoir, I Am Malala, a book that should be read not only for its vivid drama but for its urgent message about the untapped power of girls. Born in 1997 in the Swat Valley of Pakistan, Malala was one girl who spoke out against the Taliban who

took control of the Swat Valley. Malala refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On 9th October 2012, she almost paid the ultimate price when she was shot in the head at point blank range while riding the bus home from school. Few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala’s miraculous recovery took her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in Northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. The Taliban have said that Malala, who now lives in Birmingham, England, will be killed if she returns home. But she says she has been given a second life that she intends to use for the good of the people and her dream that all girls everywhere deserve an education. At 16, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest ever nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize. Her life has encompassed devastating changes in her country as it transformed from a once peaceful land to a hotbed of Islamic extremism. I Am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls’ education and of Malala’s parents’ fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons. It will make you believe in the power of one person’s voice to inspire change in the world.

PANIC AUTHOR: LAUREN OLIVER

BLACKBERRY PIE MURDER AUTHOR: JOANNE FLUKE

It’s been a sleepy summer for the folks of Lake Eden, Minnesota. In fact, it’s been a whole four months since anyone in the Swensen family has come across a dead body - a detail that just made the front page of the local paper. And that means Hannah Swensen can finally focus on her bakery - or can she? Life is never really quiet for Hannah. After all, her mother’s wedding is a little over a month away and guess who Delores put in charge of the planning? Just when Hannah believes her biggest challenge will be whether to use buttercream or fondant for the wedding cake, she accidentally hits a stranger with her cookie truck while driving down a winding country road in a raging thunderstorm. Hannah is wracked with guilt and things get even worse when she’s arrested for murder! But an autopsy soon reveals the mystery man, his shirt covered in stains from blackberry pie, would have died even if Hannah hadn’t hit him. Now, to clear her name, Hannah will have to follow a trail of pie crumbs to track down the identity of the deceased, find a baker who knows more about murder than how to roll out a perfect pie crust, and get herself to the church on time.

From New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver comes an extraordinary novel of fear, friendship, courage, and hope. Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere; because it was summer and there was nothing else to do. Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought. Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him and get him all the way through the game; he’s sure of it. But what he doesn’t know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for. For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most. Already optioned by Universal Pictures in a major deal, this gritty, spellbinding novel captures both the raw energy of fear mixed with excitement as well as the aching need to find a place to belong. 70

DARK SOULS 2

MAY 2014

Get ready to ‘die’ again and again and again

Those of you who have played and finished Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls will know that the series demands an obscene amount of patience. We’ve heard of controllers and consoles getting smashed because of how frustrating this game can be. Yet, the satisfaction of landing that last blow on a boss could leave you simply ecstatic.

T

hat is why Dark Souls 2 is in a nutshell. Aside from the deep and engaging storyline that only the Japanese could conjure up, the gameplay mechanics are the same as the previous instalments but that doesn’t make the game any less addictive. Games like the Dark Souls series offer what gamers in the Famicom and Sega Megadrive days relished: a good challenge. The enemies are ruthless, you need to figure out their attack patterns, and if the only way to defeat a boss is to hit-and-run then so be it. It could take 30 minutes to an hour to defeat certain bosses. At least, that’s what we experienced. Story-wise, your goal is simple: gather as many souls as possible in the hopes of breaking your curse. In practice, this means exploring every bit of the vast world and fighting its many enemies and bosses. This process is a battle of inches, as

enemy encounters are frequent and difficult, and the setting itself is no less than threatening. Dark Souls 2’s world is indeed an extremely dangerous place, one that forces you to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Because the environment plays an incredibly active role, it feels eerily real, like a character on its own. It pushes back in an attempt to halt your progress time and again with thin pathways and other

tricky obstacles. Some Dark Souls veterans might feel put off by the fact that Drangleic (the new world introduced in Dark Souls 2) is more of a central hub but with many intricate, branching dead-end paths than it is a sprawling interconnected world. So that is what Dark Souls 2 is about. It takes everything that made the original so great, but expands on them in its own unique ways. Sure, not every single boss fight will impress, and you might be resistant to the world’s hublike structure, but these are minor notes in an otherwise phenomenal journey. Dark Souls 2 is an incredible game, one that demands alertness and rewards perseverance. You will ‘die’ many times many ways, but push on and you’ll find this to be an excellent sequel that not only captures the essence of the original, but is a memorable experience on its own right. Lenovo Launches The Vibe Z

3. Lenovo introduced its first LTE smartphone in Malaysia, the Lenovo Vibe Z. The gorgeous razor-thin, blazing-fast device is equipped with gesture control, photo enhancement software and other premium technologies that, quite frankly, you won’t even realise you needed until you have it. It comes encased in a thin 7.9mm silver or titanium body weighing at just 147 grams. Users will appreciate its laser-etched fabric-feel rear cover that’s comfortable to hold. Let’s not forget that the Vibe Z also comes with a 5.5-inch full HD IPS wide angle viewing touchscreen display, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad-core 2.2GHz processor plus 2 GB of memory topped off with up to 16 GB of internal storage. Value for its price tag (RM 1,799)? We think so.

Sony

a5000 The Sony a5000 is the fourth compact system camera from Sony to appear after the company decided to drop its NEX name for E-mount cameras. Instead it uses the Alpha brand, often shortened to just ‘a’.

T

he a5000 is very similar in size, style, and shape to the NEX-3N, which it replaces. Although the camera is in the flat, compact style of other NEX CSCs (Compact System Camera), it has a chunky grip which is textured and feels very secure in the hand. With heavy cameras, it’s fairly unlikely that you’ll often be using it one handed, but the a5000 is very light, so there’s a good chance you might – in which case that chunky grip really makes it feel steady.

We were similarly impressed by image quality from the NEX-3N, and saw no reason why the a5000 would be any worse. In fact, with the latest Bionz X processor it should have a positive effect on results. One of the benefits of the Bionz X processor is a reduction in noise when shooting at higher sensitivities. At ISO 800, noise is controlled very well, while lots of details are maintained. At ISO 3200, noise is apparent when zooming to 100% - some areas of an image start to have a painterly effect, but when viewing images at

normal printing or web sizes, such as A4 or below, images are good and more than acceptable. Sony has been making cameras for long enough to know what it’s doing, and it hasn’t produced any duds in some time. The a5000 joins the list as another reliable, solidly built CSC which will particularly appeal to beginners. It’s ideally pitched at those looking for their first interchangeable lens camera, while its size and body shape make it likely to appeal to those who are stepping up from a mobile phone or compact camera.

We liked: The camera’s small size Retractable kit lens We disliked: No touchscreen display

MASERATI ALFIERI

MAY 2014

Italian motor maker Maserati celebrates its 100th birthday not with cakes and presents but in style with the Alfieri concept. The curvaceous 2 + 2 sports car – which bears a suspiciously close resemblance to Jaguar’s F-Type – is named after the cleverest Maserati brother Alfieri, who established Officine Alfieri Maserati in Bologna 100 years ago.

B

ut we’re assured that this is much more than a concept, as it’s based on an existing model’s running gear and stands to show the world what the next Gran Turismo will look like. The Alfieri shares its ‘bones and vital organs’ with the current Gran Turismo MC Stradale, but has a 24cm shorter wheelbase. At 4.59m long and 1.93m wide, it’s slightly shorter and wider than Ferrari’s California. This is a car you’ll never tire of gawking at. Inspired by Maserati’s black catalogue (namely the 1957 3500 GT, 1954 A6 GCS-53 and 1959 5000 GT models), the Alfieri sports a long, flat bonnet and sloping rear glass that meets huge, flowing haunches over rear-driven wheels. There’s a 4,691cc 32-valve V8 living between the windscreen wipers and that trademark concave shark mouth front grille. Bolted to a bespoke exhaust system, 442bhp and 376lb-ft are on tap, so the Alfieri should be good for over 190mph and a 4.5 second dash to 62mph.

Despite harking back to the old school, this car does not look retro. However, the blue detailing on the forged 20-inch front and 21inch rear wheels are a wink to the ‘50s vintage wire rims of old. The blue also extends to the front wheel arch triple air ducts, rear diffuser panel and exhaust tailpipes. Attention inside revolves around a central touch screen. The two-tone dash hosts a digital, twin-dial instrument panel, with the cockpit boasting an anodised, copper-coloured gearshift lever, and steering wheel spokes milled from solid aluminium. In contrast, the floor’s finishing is in a material that simulates the oxidised steel finish found on vintage ‘50s race cars. Maserati has a habit of building cars that don’t drive quite as well as they look. Fingers crossed this won’t happen when it goes into production.

HUMOUR

Q: How do you kill a vegetarian? A: By driving a steak through his/her heart. Q: Why are chefs mean? A: Because they beat the eggs, mash the potatoes and whip the cream!

A doctor says to his patient, “I have bad news and worse news”. “Oh dear, what’s the bad news?” the patient asks. The doctor replies, “You only have 24 hours to live.” “That’s terrible! How can the news possibly be worse?” the patient said. The doctor replies, “I’ve been trying to contact you since yesterday.” 80
