The Vulcans made the PSAC Tournament once again last year despite recording their first losing season in nearly three decades. Cal U finished the year with a 12-15 overall record, but suffered seven losses by three points or less. Head coach Bill Brown will look for the Vulcans to build upon their late-season success from last year. Cal U won three of the last four games in the regular season to clinch a berth in the PSAC Tournament for the ninth time in the last dozen years. Junior guard Tynell Fortune is the team’s top returning scorer from last year, as Cal U lost four of its top-five scorers. Fortune finished second on the team with a career-high 10.7 points per game while only starting 12 games. The New York native was again one of the top free-throw shooters in the PSAC, shooting .865 from the charity stripe. Fortune also ranked second on the team in assists and steals while averaging over 25 minutes per game. Fortune and senior Chris Williams gained valuable experience this summer while playing five games against international competition. The duo joined eight NCAA Division I players to form a Global Sports Academy team led by Brown and played against European professional teams in Germany and Czech Republic. The team’s lone senior, Williams started the final 10 games last season and brings versatility to the lineup with his 6-foot-5 frame and ability to shoot from the perimeter. While starting late in the year, he averaged over eight points and five rebounds and shot 51.9 percent from the floor. Williams finished the season with career highs in every category and is the team’s top returning rebounder. The Vulcans also return the reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Year in guard Jake Jacubec, who became the first player to receive the award since the 2003-04 campaign. Jacubec played in every game last season as a true freshman and finished among the team leaders in three-pointers and assists. Over the last seven games, Jacubec averaged over 10 points and made over 60 percent from beyond the arc.

Cal U features versatility with its other two returning players, Art Cook and Josh Dombrosky, both 6-foot-6 sophomores with the ability to shoot from the outside. Cook played in all but one game last year and made seven starts as a true freshman. Dombrosky played sparingly in 10 games last season, but figures to see an increased role after a solid off-season. Brown will utilize seven newcomers throughout the season with junior transfers Arman Marks and Alonzo Murphy figuring to start from the opening tip. Marks played 40 games over last two seasons at James Madison, including last year when the Dukes made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1994. He played scholastically at one of the top schools in the state of Kentucky, setting the school record for three-pointers in a season. A local product, Murphy played at the juniorcollege level the previous two years. He helped lead the Community College of Beaver County to an undefeated regular season and a conference championship last year. The backcourt will be bolstered by the addition of freshman Drew Cook and junior Brandon Cunningham, both proven winners. Cook was a first-team all-state selection last year after helping lead Beaver Falls to a Class AA state championship. Cunningham played locally at Penn State-Fayette the last two years and helped lead the program to an appearance in last year’s United State Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship. In addition to Murphy, the post depth is strengthened by sophomore Kenny Smith and freshmen Avery Allmond and Chika Obi. A physical athlete, Smith was a starting defensive tackle for the Cal U football in 2012 before joining the basketball program this year. Allmond and Obi were teammates in AAU and look to see time as true freshmen. Despite only two returning starters, the Vulcans look to build upon the frustrations from last season and reach the post-season for the fourth-consecutive year and avoid consecutive losing seasons.
