In Profile A GLOBAL OUTLOOK

Born in Peking, studying in the USA and then raising a family in Canberra, Nancy Lee has lived a rich and diverse international life. Growing up in a Peking hutong (traditional Chinese alleyway formed by courtyard residences) in the 1920’s ”was peaceful” says Calvary client Nancy Lee.

Nancy has retained a lifelong passion for music and art which is reflected in an elegant home styled with treasures from her creative pursuits and global travel.

”As a child we had to do four things”, she remembers, ”play an instrument, learn chinese chess, practice calligraphy and paint in the traditional chinese ink wash style”

A regular listener to ABC FM, Nancy enjoys exhibitions such as the National Library’s recent Celestial Empire production and shopping. Trips to the Fyshwick market with Support Worker Munya are a highlight.

These skills have followed Nancy through life and across the world, as she relocated to America (after the Communists came to Beijing from the north) and then to Canberra after she married her husband. 6

”I have a blind aged card that means old person” Nancy says cheekily, ”but I am young at heart”.

Life Lessons SMALL PIECES, BIG PICTURE

90 year old Bill lives a healthy and active lifestyle in Taree, on NSW’s mid North Coast. A keen traveller and dedicated family man, Bill’s passion for puzzles has created a home gallery of unique art loved by all.

Jigsaw puzzles keep your mind active and alert

Look after yourself and do the things you enjoy

Doing jigsaw puzzles passes the time away in the most wonderful way. I usually complete one a week.

I am determined to remain living at home for as long as possible. I go shopping, prepare my own meals and visit friends and family. I go on cruises and also love drives in the countryside.

They have thousands of pieces, so my Calvary Support Workers always have to look out for stray pieces around the house! Share your passions with others I love to see the joy on people’s faces when they see my work. Lots of friends want to buy the puzzles to put in their homes so I have developed a special technique to flip them onto hardboard so they can be framed. 8

Life is good I am the luckiest man alive. I have my health, my family, I’m happy and love the help I receive from Calvary. I’ve lived a hard working and healthy life and sure I’m being rewarded for it.

Health & Well Being HAVE YOU HEARD?

Maintaining good hearing is important for living a healthy, happy and independent life. Hearing loss is part of the natural ageing process. If left untreated, hearing loss can put a strain on relationships, impact communication and capacity to remain socially active and independent. Take early action by protecting your hearing and looking for signs of hearing loss.

Signs of Hearing Loss Many people say they can hear but they can’t understand. If other people seem to be mumbling, you have difficulty following conversations (especially if the person isn’t looking directly at you) or you are in a noisy place, it is time to consider a hearing check.

Protect your Hearing Loud noise can damage the sensitive structures within your inner ear. It’s important to know that loud noises don’t have to be physically painful to cause hearing damage. To protect your hearing make use of earplugs or earmuffs, set the volume on your radio and TV to moderate and give your ears frequent rest from noise.

Arrange a Hearing Check

For information about Hearing entitlements including checks and aids contact Australian Hearing on 1800 740 301 or visit hearinghelp.com.au.

Get Active. Feel Great. A SPORT FOR LIFE

A serving of all things Tennis You don’t have to be Wimbledon standard or a Williams sister to enjoy a serve of tennis. This is a sport designed for all ages, abilities and fitness levels. Simply pick up a racquet, move around the court and gently lobby the ball over the net. As skills improve, rallies and games provide greater scope for more vigorous exercise and competition. Tennis offers a range of health benefits for both the body and mind. The movements and strokes can improve agility, flexibility, strength, coordination and motor skills whilst offering an aerobic workout. 14

The social nature of the game and doubles options makes it a great community sport and friendly competition. Even better, adapted versions of the game make it one of the most inclusive sports around. You can play it in a wheelchair, and with a modified ball (with a noise making device) for blind matches. Not to mention the family favourite table tennis version. So why not spring on to the court this season and serve up an ace!

N O T S E LAUNC Calvary Community Care client, Iris, has always called the apple isle home. In 1949 Iris was the third ever woman to join the Tasmanian Police Force so she is very familiar with the local area. A keen walker, Iris has kindly shared her special Launceston places with us. CITY PARK A picturesque park full of mature trees, beautiful gardens and annual flowers, the grounds are easily explored on a network of pathways. Also featuring a monkey enclosure and a beautiful conservatory.

ST JOHNS CHURCH An impressive building inside and outside, St Johns Church is one of the oldest churches in the city and holds many special memories for me, including my Wedding day and daughter’s Christening.

EAST LAUNCESTON BOWLS CLUB A pristine bowls club set high up on the hill in East Launceston. A place to meet new friends, stay active and socialise in the community. A great location with the Croquet Club next door and the Aquatic Centre around the corner. 16

Calvary Conversations COURAGE AND AUTHENTICITY

Stories, insights and inspirations from the Calvary community Nada and Ian’s home in Northern Tasmania is a constant buzz of activity. Together they manage a bus and vehicle business, run cattle on the farm Ian manages and support son Aran’s blossoming swimming career. (Aran just won nine gold medals at the Down Syndrome International Championships in Italy!) Passionate about “his toys” as Nada calls them, Ian owns tractors and a much loved 4x4 Mule utility. For over ten years, they have also lived with cancer and recently introduced Hospice@Home services so Ian could stay ”where he prefers”. 18

Community nurses visit their home and Calvary Support Workers assist with showers and sleepovers. We asked for Ian’s bed to be stationed in the lounge room” explains Nada, “it works better because he is part of the family hub and not away in the bedroom”. With overnight support, Nada can have an uninterrupted sleep, take Aran to his early morning swimming training and reduce the demands on her daughter, who has been “a big support” but is also parenting her own young children. The flexibility of Hospice@Home means that the family can adapt

and respond to Ian’s needs using a combination of in-home and hospital based support. Both Ian and Nada are full of praise for the Melwood unit at Calvary St Luke’s Hospital and agree that “hospital is the best place for monitoring and medication management”. At other times, the opportunity to be home together is welcomed.. “It’s different having support workers in your house” admits Nada, “but you adapt, it’s good and the girls are lovely”. Thank you to Ian and Nada Miller for sharing their experiences. Sadly Ian lost his battle with cancer in July and we are sending our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences to the Miller family.

Nestled within the leafy and picturesque streets of Launceston, Calvary’s Melwood Unit is a specialist palliative care facility dedicated to providing comfort, dignity and quality of life for patients and loved ones. With an open door policy welcoming all including pets – a family room and garden, visitors can stay for as long as they choose, including overnight. Calvary’s pastoral care team and visiting community providers care through a ministry of presence, companionship and support and also provide bereavement support.

I love my job and find it so rewarding. It is a real privilege... to be able to make a positive difference.

Meet Sarah Sexton, Calvary Palliative Care Nurse, Melwood Unit I love my job and find it so rewarding. It is a real privilege and an enriching experience to be able to make a positive difference at such a vulnerable time in a person’s life. I perceive death as a normal part of life. We come into this world and we depart from this world needing love and support. My role as a palliative care nurse has made me face my own mortality, reflect on what is important to me and my family, and to seize the day ‘carpe diem’. I like to encourage patients to reflect and talk about positive aspects 20

of their daily life such as their achievements ie. family, career, sport, important milestones, treasured photographs, travel, stories and a few patients have even had books published. What wonderful legacies to leave loved ones. The Melwood unit at Calvary St Luke’s Hospital in Launceston is one of Calvary’s specialist palliative care units. Calvary also provides palliative and end of life care to people with advancing illness across all our hospitals, retirement communities and community care services nationally.

In his words DICK DUONG ON THE NDIS

I love travel, international architecture, museums and food. I don’t let my disease stop me from doing what I want to do. Alaska, Canada, Malaysia, Japan and New Zealand are just some of the places I have visited with my Calvary Support Worker. Together with my friend I design and build gadgets for my wheelchair. I also enjoy building computers. With four shifts a day great conversation and a good laugh are important to me so I look for experienced Support Workers with a good sense of humour. As far as the NDIS is concerned, I’m quite happy with the services that Calvary is providing me and I intend to continue letting Calvary manage that for me.

I’m a firm believer of the saying “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”. When selecting a NDIS provider I would suggest thinking about: • How quick and flexible can they respond to the changing needs of the client? • Can the provider provide a support service for clients wishing to travel? • What rostering system do they use?
