CONDON

HEAD COACH Eighth Season • Iowa State, 1991 200-150 Cal Poly • 89-52 Big West Conference

he most successful head coach in Cal Poly softball program history, Jenny Condon enters her eighth season in 2012 ranked third among active Big West Conference coaches with a .571 (200-150) winning percentage. Condon, who directed Cal Poly to Big West championships in 2007 and 2009, also ranks third among conference head coaches with a .631 (8952) winning percentage in Big West contests. Under Condon, the 2005, 2007 and 2009 Big West Coach of the Year selection, Cal Poly has suffered just two losing seasons. The Big West’s representative to the NFCA Division I Head Coaches Committee, Condon became the 11th Big West coach to earn 200 victories at a member institution as Cal Poly completed its 2011 season with a 6-5 victory against conference champion Pacific. Individually last season, designated player Anna Cahn earned her third All-Big West first team accolade to bring the number of Mustang all-conference selections under Condon to 32. Additionally, Condon has produced six NFCA All-West Region selections during her tenure at Cal Poly. Despite the program’s 23-24 overall finish in 2010, Cal Poly’s 12-9 Big West mark kept the Mustangs within the top-three programs in the conference standings for the sixthsuccessive season. Led by Cahn’s selection as Big West Field Player of the Year, five Mustangs earned allconference praise in 2010. The 2009 season proved to be the finest effort in Cal Poly’s 18-year Division I tenure as the Mustangs established single-season program

T

records for overall winning percentage (.774), conference winning percentage (.857), conference victories (18), fewest conference defeats (three) and fewest overall defeats (12) en route to capturing a second Big West title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs, who made program history by rising as high as No. 21 in the USA Today/NFCA poll, produced their first NCAA Tournament victories at the Division I level and reached the championship round of the Stanford regional. Behind Cahn’s Big West Pitcher of the Year honor, a programrecord nine Mustangs garnered allconference praise. Setting the table for an historic 2009 campaign was a solid 2008 effort as the Mustangs finished 24-22 overall and in third place in the Big West standings with a 12-9 mark. In between opening the season with a 5-1 victory against eventual Women’s College World Series runner-up Texas A&M and winning six of their final eight contests, Cal Poly posted eight victories against programs that qualified for the previous season’s NCAA Tournament and defended Bob Janssen Field with a 14-3 (.824) home mark. All-Big West first team selection Melissa Pura headlined a group of seven total Mustangs who garnered all-conference praise. Prior to the 2009 campaign, Cal Poly’s 2007 season ranked as the most-notable year in program history. Aside from capturing the program’s first Big West title and securing its first NCAA Tournament berth at the Division I level, Cal Poly established then-single-season records for total victories (39) and overall (.696) and conference (.778) winning percentage. After dealing

defeats to No. 12 Washington, No. 6 Northwestern and No. 9 Stanford, Cal Poly opened Big West play with eight-straight victories. The Mustangs, who led the conference race wire-to-wire, closed the regular season by winning five of their final six games and a 3-2 victory against Pacific on May 11 not only secured the Big West crown, but also provided Condon her 100th career victory. Headlined by Big West Player of the Year selection Lisa Modglin – who also doubled as Cal Poly’s first NFCA All-America pick in nine years – Cal Poly placed eight Mustangs on the 2007 all-conference team. A standout player in the collegiate and international arenas, Condon’s influence at Cal Poly was felt instantly as her inaugural 2005 squad posted a 35-16 mark. The Mustangs went 15-6 in Big West play and the second-place finish was, at the time, the best showing in program history. Cal Poly’s 27-23 record in 2006 was backed by an 11-7 Big West mark that guaranteed a thirdplace finish. The record solidified the program’s first back-to-back winning campaigns since the 1996 (23-19) and 1997 (37-17) seasons. Condon’s sides have been especially adept in defending Bob Janssen Field, having racked up a 79-49 (.617) home record under her guidance. Included in that mark is a program-record 19-game home winning streak from May, 9 2008 to May 2, 2009. Condon began her coaching career at UNLV in 1994, assisting the Rebels to a third-place finish at the 1995 WCWS. She relocated to Northwestern in 1997 before beginning a two-year stint with Oregon State in 1998. The following season, the Beavers recorded a school-

record 47 wins and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Head coach Kirk Walker’s staff earned Speedline/NFCA Pacific Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Condon spent the 2000 campaign with UNLV before returning to Corvallis in 2001. She served four additional seasons at Oregon State until accepting the Cal Poly head coaching position on Aug. 25, 2004. Condon competed collegiately at Iowa State and completed a prolific career in 1990. A 1989 NFCA AllAmerica second team selection, fourtime All-Big Eight honoree and threetime academic all-conference pick, Condon remains Iowa State’s all-time leader for hits (216), runs (120), triples (24) and batting average (.351). The outfielder was inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame in 2003. A native of Edina, Minn., Condon earned a bachelor's degree in education from Iowa State in 1991 with a minor in health. Condon began a two-year stint with USA Softball in 1994 by helping the Americans capture the 1994 International Softball Federation World Championship in St. John's, Newfoundland. A year later, the United States won the Pan-American Games gold medal in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Additionally, Condon played on three National Women's Fastpitch League championship teams with the California Commotion and was named an ASA All-American four times – twice with the Commotion and twice more with MCM Sports. She earned gold medals in softball at the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1994 and 1995 and in team handball at the 1993 competition.

GARZA

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Second Season • UNLV, 2002 ormer UNLV standout Linda Garza returns for her season as associate head coach with the Cal Poly softball program in 2012. Garza joined the Mustangs after serving as head coach at Wright State during the 2010 season. After directing Wright State to a third-place finish in the Horizon League regular season standings, Garza’s Raiders captured the postseason tournament title to

F

advance to the NCAA Tournament. Three Raiders were named to the 2010 AllHorizon League first team under Garza’s guidance as the program established single-season records for hits (538), walks (148) and stolen bases (150). Garza arrived at Wright State after serving as the top assistant at Purdue (200609), aiding the Boilermakers to 30-plus victories during each of her four seasons. At

Purdue, Garza assisted with both recruiting and scheduling while helping in the refinement of the program’s outfielders. Under Garza’s guidance, Purdue established five program offensive records while 10 Boilermakers earned All-Big Ten Conference praise. Garza, who has also served as an assistant at Tulsa and Arkansas, received her start at UNLV, where she worked for one

season as a student assistant coach following her playing career with the Rebels (1998-01). A four-year starter at second base, third base and in the outfield, Garza finished her UNLV career ranked among the program’s top-10 players for doubles, walks, hits and sacrifices. Garza, who earned AllMountain West Conference praise as a senior after leading UNLV in triples, RBI and

sacrifice hits, started the final 155 games of her career. A four-time All-Mountain West academic honoree, Garza received a bachelor's degree in health education from UNLV in 2002 and a master's degree in kinesiology from Texas Woman's University in May 2009.

ANI

NYHUS

ASSISTANT COACH Sixth Season • Oregon, 2005 ormer Canadian Olympian, Oregon standout and Junior College Player of the Year selection Ani Nyhus is in her sixth season as an assistant on Jenny Condon’s staff and as Cal Poly’s pitching coach. Despite an uncharacteristic dip in form in 2011, the 2010 campaign proved another productive season for Cal Poly’s rotation with the Mustangs leading all Big West staffs in ERA (3.09) and suffering the second-fewest losses of any squad (24). The 2009 Mustangs, however, produced the finest in-circle effort in program history. Highlighted by lefthander Anna Cahn, named Big West Pitcher

F

of the Year and to the NFCAAllWest Region team after setting program single-season records for victories (28-7) and innings worked (232.2), Cal Poly’s 2009 rotation led all conference programs in ERA (1.72), opposing batting average (.225), wins (41) and fewest losses (12). The Mustangs also allowed just 62 walks and 117 total runs in 374.1 innings. Nyhus’ influence upon the Mustang pitching staff was felt immediately during her initial 2007 season, as Cal Poly lowered its team ERA 82 points from the previous season and struck out 82 more hitters. As a result, three of Cal Poly’s four pitchers garnered All-Big West praise. In 2008, Cal Poly’s 2.63

team ERA and .246 opposing batting average each ranked as the second-lowest figures among Big West rotations. Accordingly, the Mustangs yielded conference lows for hits (296), doubles (41), homers (21) and walks (83). Under Nyhus, Cal Poly pitchers have earned six total All-Big West first and second team honors. As a collegian at Oregon, Nyhus earned NFCA AllAmerica third team and All-Pac10 Conference first team honors in 2004 after posting a 2512 record and a 1.54 ERA. The win total remains the secondhighest in Oregon single-season history and Nyhus added 202 strikeouts to her resume for

the Ducks, who reached the championship game of the Florida State Regional. Nyhus, who no-hit Utah State during the 2004 campaign, earned all 10 of Oregon’s Pac-10 victories and shut out six ranked opponents. Her 1.67 ERA remains the eighth-best mark in program history. Nyhus began her collegiate career at Central Arizona College. As a sophomore, Nyhus struck out 378 batters and posted 40 victories to earn Junior College Player of the Year, All-America, all-region and All-Arizona Community College Athletic Association honors as the Vaqueros finished 70-4 and captured the National Junior College Athletic

Association championship. Nyhus collected 34 victories as a freshman in 2002 as the Vaqueros went 63-2. Along with her single-season bests, Nyhus owns CAC career records for total victories (74) and strikeouts (627). A native of Prince George, British Columbia, Nyhus pitched for the Canadian National Team that went 3-4 at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. A national team member from 2002-04, Nyhus compiled a 2-1 mark for Canada at the 2003 U.S. Cup.

BOB JANSSEN FIELD The home of mustang soFTBALL

T

he 2012 campaign marks the Cal Poly softball program’s 12th anniversary at Bob Janssen Field. Named for the San Luis Obispo native dedicated to promoting youth sports and recreation within the central coast community, the Robert H. Janssen Foundation contributed $250,000 toward the construction of the project in order to support both the Mustang softball program and local youth sports programs. Located adjacent to Robin Baggett Baseball Stadium and comprising half of Ozzie Smith Plaza, Janssen Field is part of the 47-acre Sports Complex, an area that includes multipurpose fields for use by the student population. Janssen Field features 426 permanent chair-back seats. With the inclusion of bleachers, Janssen Field seats 1,000 spectators, making it the largest venue among the eight Big West Conference member programs. On March 25, 2007, a complex-record 1,532 fans packed Janssen Field to watch Cal Poly battle nationallyranked UCLA (top). The lighted complex also includes enclosed batting cages and practice areas for both teams, an on-site clubhouse for the Mustangs (above), restrooms and concession and merchandising areas. Janssen Field measures 205 feet down the right and left field foul lines

and 220 feet to straightaway center field. The outfield fence measures six feet. The first game at Janssen Field was played on March 3, 2001, with Cal Poly defeating UC Riverside, 8-0. Entering the 2012 campaign, Cal Poly is 138-90 (.605) at Janssen Field. The 2009 Mustang squad set single-season program records for total victories (18), fewest defeats (one) and winning percentage (.947) at the complex.
