A

nyone with children in Las Virgenes Unified School District has probably heard a robocall from Dan Stepenosky or seen the blond superintendent flashing his million-dollar smile and shaking hands at Back to School Night, open houses and other events.

Our superintendent may spend his days at the helm of our school district, but many of the LVUSD community may be surprised by Stepenosky’s rather impressive past in the United States Navy. Lieutenant Stepenosky served four and a half years, first on the destroyer USS Waddell and later on the guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville. During his naval service, Stepenosky engaged in counter-narcotics operations off the coast of South America and in Operation Southern Watch in the Middle East. He received the naval Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, naval Meritorious Unit Commendation, naval Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal given by the State of Kuwait. Stepenosky says he has numerous stories from his days as a naval officer from 1990-1995.

16

Calabasas Style

Philadelphia native Stepenosky and his wife, Sharon, from Palos Verdes, relocated to Calabasas’ El Encanto development from Santa Monica in 2002 because of “the great schools, of course! Calabasas is a great place to live, work and raise our family,” he says. “LVUSD schools rank in the top 2% of the 1,000 districts in the state. U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek magazine consistently rank Agoura and Calabasas high schools among the best in the nation. Working with the dedicated board of education and amazing teachers, staff and principals is an inspiration and joy.” Stepenosky joined LVUSD in 2006 as assistant superintendent of personnel until 2011. He then was the district’s deputy superintendent from 2011-2012 before replacing Donald Zimring as superintendent of instruction in 2012. The Stepenosky family is happy to be part of the Calabasas community. Kearston, 10, and Sean, 9, attend LVUSD’s Mariposa School of Global Education. They also play on local basketball and soccer teams. Sean additionally plays baseball along with football and Kearston flourishes as a budding artist. The kids are involved in Mariposa’s productions with Jaxx Theatricals including “Annie.” They are currently rehearsing for “The Snow Queen’s Frozen.”

Dan, Sharon and their children run several 5Ks together each year. Sharon is training for her second half-marathon, the Los Angeles Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. Sharon served as copresident of Mariposa’s Parent-Faculty Club last year. Sharon works for Donor Services Group, which raises funds for organizations including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Smile Train. When the Stepenoskys aren’t running 5Ks or the school district, the family enjoys traveling, sports and music. Dan and Sharon attend their children’s various games and activities, and Dan surfs when he can find time. He also plays the saxophone. Kearston and Sean just started sax lessons. Stepenosky attended Villanova University on a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corp (NROTC) scholarship, graduating in 1990 with a bachelor’s of science degree in physics. Following his decorated naval service, Stepenosky earned his teaching credential from the University of San Diego in 1995, his master’s degree from California State University, Northridge in 1999 and his doctorate from UCLA in 2003. He taught physics, Advanced Placement physics, astronomy and physical science at Beverly Hills High School from 19952000 before serving as assistant principal from 2000-2003 and principal from 2003-2006. He has also served as an adjunct lecturer for the USC Rossier School of Education, California Lutheran University Doctoral in Education Leadership and Master’s program, and Concordia University Master’s program in Education Leadership. He is proud to have been selected to the Suburban School Superintendent’s Group, a group of 150 superintendents across the country. “It’s the top 1% of schools and school leaders, so it’s a tremendous honor to have been nominated and selected,” he says. n If you know a great family or individual to profile, please contact us at: stylepublishing@gmail.com.

8th Annual West Valley By Sabrina Samedi Photography by Renee Appell

Fine Wine and Food Tour

The glass was definitely half full, if not full with splendor at the 8th Annual West Valley Fine Wine and Food Tour on Sept. 17 at The Auto Gallery’s Porsche and Audi showrooms. Mark Sterling and Steve Brevidoro served as masters of ceremony. Guests were given the opportunity to enjoy a great array of wine and appetizing cuisine from local restaurants such as Fleming’s, Kate Mantilini, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Safir Mediterranean Cuisine and Peasant Bistro. Guests also satisfied their sweet teeth with indulgences from Nothing Bundt Cakes and Sugar and Spyked. Adrian Goldman and Kevin James O’Brien kept the mood light with live entertainment. The event held traditional activities such as a raffle and silent auction, as well as a new and festive event: grape stomping. The annual event’s gracious premier sponsors included Councilman Bob Blumenfield, Majarian Publishing, Motion Picture and TV Fund, Providence Tarzana Medical Center and Warner Center Marriot. Beds Unlimted served as the ‘stomp’ sponsor, and We Rock the Spectrum Kids Gym was the entertainment sponsor. Additionally, the grand annual event was proudly received by friend sponsors including Senior Resources Inc., Westfield and Woodland Plaza.

Farm to Table By Sabrina Samedi Photography by James Doss

Benefit Dinner

There is nothing better than enjoying a delicious locally-sourced gourmet meal for a good cause. Leaders, businesses and residents alike nourished their community roots at the first Farm to Table dinner and auction event at Sherwood Country Club on Sept. 20. None other than legendary Emmy award winning DJ and TV producer Bob Eubanks emceed the dinner and auction. The auction benefitted Interface Children & Family Services, a nonprofit agency striving to help prevent and heal the effects of child abuse, domestic violence, family conflict and mental-health issues in Ventura County. Through educational programs, Interface aims to prevent, interrupt and end the cycle of crisis. While Interface serves approximately 26,000 individuals annually and assists more than 150,000 more via the 2-1-1 information and referral service hotline, Interface board member Dina Furash continues to hope that events such as this aid in raising awareness for the importance of Interface for people who have nowhere else to turn.

With so many unique styles of Christmas trees to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect one.

F

or more than 60 years, Aldik Home has provided home-décor enthusiasts with high-quality silk flowers, silk foliage, floral arrangements, custom artificial trees and home-décor items. During the holiday season, the showroom is transformed into a winter wonderland showcasing the most beautiful collection of artificial Christmas trees and holiday décor in the area. Calabasas Style sat down with Aldik Home Store Manager Michael Perez and his design team, to get their take on the best ways to decorate your home for the upcoming season. “Christmas decoration for the home is much more than a simple tree in the corner. Today’s homeowner entertains friends and family during the entire month, and it is important to make the setting festive and warm. We suggest using an artificial tree because they are so

realistic looking and versatile, yet an artificial tree is pre-lit and can be left standing from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. If you are looking for more room around the tree for gifts, set the Christmas tree in an urn or pot to raise the tree about two feet high. If your ceiling is 10 or 12 feet high, this trick will fill the space better and make the tree look bigger without adding more ornaments. The Christmas tree is the star of the show, but the supporting cast is every bit as exciting. “During the holidays, it is comforting to come home to the warm glow of a wreath hanging on the wall. We also suggest using lights to give your home the right amount of holiday sparkle. When it comes to the mantel, use garland and lights as well as any tabletop décor to make it the room’s focal point. If your home does not have a formal mantel, you can always use any side or sofa table to achieve the same look. It is

Just a few w new whim ell-placed piece sc sical feeli ng to you an add a r existing décor.

easy to bring holiday cheer to any room’s darker areas by removing a picture from the wall and replacing it with a wreath or decorated teardrop on the existing hook. If there is not an outlet below, you can easily use battery lights. Many battery-operated lights have timers built into them so they go on every day at the selected time. With the LED lights, the batteries will last for the entire month.

Aldik Home has thousands of gorgeous ornaments, including showstoppers like this giant, glimmering butterfly.

“Additionally, a simple centerpiece of glass ornaments with a string of battery operated lights on the coffee table or entry table is not only easy, but adds a beautiful touch. For the dining room table, we suggest placing some artificial pine branches in the center with a finial or two and a pedestal with votive candles. Anyone can create a holiday look in every room of the house with just a few lights and some ornaments. “Whether you want to do it yourself, or let the talented and experienced design team do it for you, Aldik Home’s passion for beautiful silk floral and Christmas décor will inspire you.” n Aldik Home | Home Décor 7651 Sepulveda Bl., Van Nuys 91405 818.988.5970 | AldikHome.com

Star Tips FOR HOLIDAY BEAUTY By Anna D. Guanche, MD

T

he holidays are a time for happiness, togetherness and memories. As the invites to cocktail parties and social gatherings roll in, we find ourselves wanting to look our best. It is always nicer to wow people with positive changes rather than wowing them with how aged we look. Besides exuding confidence and good cheer, which is key, I have included some beauty tips to help prepare for the season. A number of simple products and procedures impart an image of youth and vibrancy. When we look better, we project confidence and are able to enjoy ourselves more thoroughly. It is best to have a little lead-time in planning procedures so that it won’t coincide with the mad rush of holiday shopping.

Face

The face is my specialty! Injectables can go a long way in a very short time. Artfully done filler in the lower face and Botox® in the upper face can take five to 10 years off in less than a week. With Botox®, we can soften lines on the forehead, frown and crow’s feet area, providing also what we call a “chemical browlift.” The browlift must be done carefully so that it looks natural (arched, not pointed). With advanced filler techniques, we can fill the smile lines, marionette lines, circles under the eyes, cheeks, jawline, temples and more. At our office, filler and Botox® combination is an extremely popular procedure. If injectables are not in the cards, there are many other options. A Fraxel® series can rejuvenate the skin, reducing unwanted brown spots and lines and providing a refreshed look. We love Fraxel® because it goes deep but has only two days of downtime. Ultherapy® is the newest ultrasound energy modality. With no downtime, the Ultherapy® procedure improves the skin tone, firming jowl and neck skin. If freckling is the problem, then Intense Pulsed Light photofacials with the Lumenis

30

Calabasas Style

M22 can lift off pigmentation and sun damage. The brown spots appear browner for a week, but they are coverable with makeup. One other option is my favorite: the Jessner’s peel. It is a low-downtime peel that can be done as a series and helps reduce fine lines and pigmentation. *Star tip: Pre-event facials such as IS Clinical’s Fire and Ice facial or our Oxygen Facial leave the skin glowing and red-carpet (or dance-floor) ready. No time for procedures at the moment? Try IS Clinical’s new Youth Serum. We are all addicted! It is a polymer that contracts over the surface of the skin and gives it a fabulously smooth look. It is excellent as a primer under makeup or a skin refresher later in the day before an evening event. Try it under Chanel Double Perfection makeup. In fact, a full, personally tailored skin-care regimen can make an amazing difference in how the skin looks.

Eyes

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. We don’t want our eyes to say, “I’m exhausted.” Ideally, they say, “I’m ready for life!” There are many options to rejuvenate the area, providing a more youthful, alert appearance. Besides the Botox® chemical browlift discussed earlier, we can do Thermage®. Thermage® is a radiofrequency device that induces skin tightening and new collagen formation with no downtime. With Thermage Eyes, we include treatment of the entire forehead so that the brows are lifted as well. Peels can firm the “crepe-y” appearance of the lower eyelid skin but with a seven-day downtime. For prominent circles, we use Juvederm® injectable gel to correct under-eye hollows. Lashes are important in the eyes’ appearance. Latisse® can help you grow your own longer, thicker and darker lashes. There are salons nearby that perform now-popular eyelash extensions. These can be fabulous when not overdone; however, they make the eyes prone to conjunctivitis and glue allergy. Eye creams make a difference. I love Lumiere Riche Eye Balm, because it has phytoestrogens derived from sweet potato that help to plump up collagen in thinning skin. For daytime, I recommend the revolutionary Neotensil product. Developed by MIT-trained scientists, this product is a polymer that is dubbed “spandex for the eyes.” This twostep process shows immediate results that last about eight hours. It is a great pick-meup either daily or just before an event.

* Model star tip: Visine. A few drops clears the whites of the eyes (think Elle McPherson) and reverses the rheumy bloodshot look. There is a rebound effect the next day, so save this for special events, photo shoots or particularly tired days. Generally, to reduce puffiness, I recommend a low-sodium diet, taking vitamins at night and antihistamines if you are prone to allergies. Rubbing the eyes is a no-no. It is always best to treat the thin skin around the eyes gently.

Lips

The lips can be rejuvenated in a tasteful way so that they are harmonious with other facial features. I generally use Juvederm® or Belotero® injectables around the lips and mouth to also fill small vertical lines in the area. Injectables can cause bruising and are swollen slightly for two days afterward, so a minimum seven-day lead-time is optimal for this procedure. Ultherapy can be performed on the upper lip to firm the skin and shorten the distance between the nose and the red part of the lip. This is to ameliorate the long upper lip. *Model star tip: suck on thumb or finger for a minute before doing makeup to give the lips a more plump, bee-stung look. Lip plumpers such as Lip Venom by DuWop are popular. These contain mild irritants and a slightly anesthetic effect, which makes the lips look and feel full for a few hours.

Body

There is no substitute for healthy diet and exercise, but when stubborn areas such as love handles or belly do not respond, it becomes unreasonable to try to lose enough weight overall to flatten these areas without hollowing out the face. Coolsculpting is a popular procedure with no downtime that is designed to treat specific bulges. This treatment reduces areas by a quarter of an inch or more, with results being achieved over the following two to three months. The new flat-panel attachment is great for fine-tuning abdominal fat in areas that have already been liposuctioned or the lateral thighs (saddlebags).

Legs

Fabulous legs can make the holiday dress. To have a more svelte appearance, the inner and outer thighs can be treated with coolsculpting for permanent fat-reduction. Velashape series works for temporary cellulite reduction. Models and actresses love to have the Velashape procedure series before photo shoots or impromptu beach sightings. Thermage can tighten the skin on the thighs and knees. *Pageant secret: Preparation H cream under Saran wrap for the thighs (not recommended after tanning because of streaking). *Star secret: Skinnies Instant Lift adhesives pull extra skin from the knees. Stars often wear these on the red carpet to minimize the appearance of wrinkled knees or cellulite. Spider veins can be improved with sclerotherapy (leg vein injections), a procedure that requires a minimum two-week lead-time, so plan ahead. No time for leg vein injections? MAC skinsheen leg spray makeup gives the appearance of an even tan, masking imperfections without the orange hue. For a longer lasting faux tan, Jergens’ Body Glow is a popular option. Holiday events are more fun when you feel great about yourself. Hopefully, some of these tips will help you look and feel your best this season. Whether it’s a procedure or a product, treat yourself early in the season before the inevitable shopping and wrapping frenzy begins. This article is written as a guide and does not substitute for individual medical advice. n

Dr. Guanche is not a consultant for, nor receives consulting fees or compensation from, any of the product or device companies mentioned in this article.

*Star tip: Wear a long corset or spanx for “waist training” one to two days prior to the event. This curbs the appetite and conceivably wicks away extra water from the midsection. To prevent weight gain during party season, it is best to have a high-protein snack and a full glass of water before an event. This way, you are not starving when the high-calorie hors d’oeuvres are served.

Film Festival

Film lovers rejoiced in viewing the premiere of Denzel Washington’s new movie, The Equalizer, as part of the inaugural Calabasas Film Festival from Sept. 12-14. With the mayor’s support, the CFF hopes to provide a top-quality venue for the community to celebrate its established roots in the film and television industry while also striving to connect with everyone who shares a passion for the arts. CFF patrons and sponsors had nothing but enthusiastic reviews about the event. Festival supporter Kit Gilbert of Jessup Cellars Winery said, “It was such a true pleasure to be a part of this exciting event. That we were all witnessing the start of something very powerful was quite evident.” Calabasas Mayor David Shapiro responded, “Thanks so very much. As indicated, the wine was a perfect way to celebrate the success of the opening night…Raising a class to next year’s CFF.” Festival Director Kelley Fries is excited to expand the festival with more films and programs in the years ahead.

NW Rugs

Adds Furniture Showroom to Agoura Hills Location

NW Rugs N By Beth Cone Kramer Photography by Marvin Steindler

W Rugs has added 10,000 square feet of high-quality upholstered and leather furniture to each of the retailer’s area rug and home-furnishings showrooms. “Interior designers, clients and customers all asked us to add more furniture with a wide range of fabric and leather upholstery choices so they could complete design projects all in one place,” Furniture Project Manager Anat Aharoni. “We have been so thrilled to be able to oblige.”

“We opened the business because we have a passion for bringing beauty to people’s lives through their home décor,” owner Shawn Nili says. “And just as importantly, to share the history and traditions of the ancient artistry of fine hand-knotted area rugs and how rug weaving collectives today provide sustainable growth for many communities where the rugs are made.”

“For the Love of Tile” NW Rugs has grown from a small business in Tigard, Ore., to become the largest family-owned retail area rug and furniture company in the western United States, with three stores in Portland, Ore., and a location in Agoura Hills and Las Vegas.

44

Calabasas Style

Alen Farvin, a consultant in the Agoura Hills showroom, adds, “Each store has over 3,000 hand-knotted rugs and a variety of hand-tufted and machine-made area rugs, so finding the right one – no, the perfect rug – is easy. Better still, because of our longstanding close relationships with our vendors, we have access to thousands more and can offer the widest selection at competitive pricing, like no other stores on the west coast, from $299 to $150,000. You won’t find that anywhere else.”

NW Rugs now carries a wide selection of upholstered and leather furniture to coordinate with the unique collection of rugs that complement any design style, whether modern/contemporary, transitional, traditional, or eclectic. Rug styles and patterns include Persian, Oriental, geometric, ikat and rustic tribal. The showrooms offer furniture for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, providing the communities they serve with a one-stop shop for décor needs. Alen recommends customers “bring color chips, fabric swatches, tile samples, and smartphone photos to make the selection process even easier. We can help you coordinate your area rug and furniture selections, including choosing from over 1,000 upholstery and pillow fabrics. The addition of these fabrics, which are also available in cut yardage, is a huge boon for interior designers and the public alike.

Pulling together a cohesive look is easier than before, and in half the time, because it’s all in-house, right there to see and touch.” NW Rugs’ tenured professional staff provides the public and the interior design trade with the highest level of customer service and quality home furnishings for every style and budget. In addition to rug and furniture design coordination, the retailer offers in-home consultation, home delivery, rug cleaning and repairs. n 28610 Canwood St. Agoura Hills 91301 818.706.3333 nwrugs.com facebook.com/NWRug

THOUSAND OAKS By Sabrina Samedi Photography by Renee Appell

Art Festival

Creativity and entertainment were all the buzz during the 11th Annual Thousand Oaks Art Festival at the Civic Arts Plaza and The Lakes on Sept. 20-21. The two-day festival hosted more than 60 visual-art exhibitors and allowed children to dive right in and explore their imagination via hands-on artistic and interactive art exhibits. The festival had continual live performances and it included wine tasting at The Lakes. Patrick Warburton, actor from the hit sitcoms Seinfeld and Rules of Engagement, along with his wife, Catherine, a noted visual artist, lent their support for the arts and the continuous growth of art-related programs for the kids as the festival’s honorary co-chairs. The Thousand Oaks Arts Festival kicked off with a VIP reception on Sept. 19 at the Civic Arts Plaza’s Kavli Theater hosted by Alliance of the Arts to commemorate the launch of the theater’s new sound system. Guests rejoiced with wine and hors d’oeuvres from sponsors Opolo Wine and P.F. Chang’s.

Nutcracker

For over 28 years, California Dance Theatre, the training school for Pacific Festival Ballet, has trained dancers from throughout the community in the disciplines of ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and contemporary dance, among others. This year, as the company celebrates its twentieth season performing The Nutcracker at the Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks, it has the distinct privilege of welcoming to the cast alumni who have gone on to dance professionally throughout the world. Notable among them is Emiko Flanagan, a graduate of California Dance Theatre, now with Dance Theatre Harlem in New York City, who will dance the role of The Snow Queen for the Saturday performances. California Dance Theatre students Megan King and Jennifer Block will dance the roles of The Snow Queen and Clara, respectively, in Sunday’s cast. Joining the dancers for all performances will be New York City Ballet’s Tiler Peck as The Sugar Plum and Gonzalo Garcia as her Cavalier. Guest artists will take the stage with 170 students from California Dance Theatre, all of whom went through an extensive audition process that saw over 600 submissions. The result promises to be nothing short of magical this December when Pacific Festival Ballet takes to the stage to perform their annual family favorite - the only Nutcracker that snows on the audience. Leili Rackow dances the role of Clara during the Saturday performances of Pacific Festival Ballet’s The Nutcracker. Tickets for all December 20 and 21 performances at the Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks are on sale now. Pacific Festival Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker brings magic to the Fred Kavli Theatre December 20 and 21, 2014 at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. For tickets, visit the Civic Arts Box Office or ticketmaster.com.

FRIDAY NIGHT By Sabrina Samedi Photography by Renee Appell

Lights

Friday Night Lights kicked off at Calabasas High School on Aug. 29, and the varsity football team’s perseverance paid off with a 53-19 victory against the Rancho (Nev.) High School Rams. CHS’s current record is 3-3. The victory comes on the heels of welcoming first-year coach Casey Clausen. Coach Clausen hopes to lead the Coyotes in the newly configured Canyon League. Calabasas mom Marnie Schneider witnessed Coach Clausen’s positive impact on the Coyotes, “The kids are getting confidence for winning, or at least competing!” Advocating the importance of youth athletics, Marnie says, “I believe that high school football is a gift that the student-athletes, coaches and school give us. They go out there and work so hard to entertain us. These kids are juggling school, family, jobs, charity work and friends; in addition to that, it’s a few hours a day they are not on cell phones or playing video games. Rather, they are suited up, and bring the moral fiber they need to grind it out.”

Pumpkin Festival

Did you know that Calabasas got its name from the Spanish word “Calabaza meaning pumpkin or gourd? Thus, it is only fitting that the city of Calabasas hosted its annual Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 18-19. Continuing a more-than-40-years tradition, the festival strives to bring the community together for two days of entertainment surrounding pumpkins. Presented by the city of Calabasas and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce, the festival was a huge success. The Pumpkin Festival was housed alongside Lost Hills Road and Juan Bautista de Anza Park. Not only was there a Saturday morning costume parade, but the festival offered performances by live bands, a DJ dance arena, marketplace vendors, scrumptious food, pumpkin-filled treats, pumpkin beer, pumpkin painting and pumpkin-carving stations. This affair was a family-friendly event as kids along with young-at-heart adults rejoiced in traveling down a giant slide, taking part in Halloween carnival games and gushing over the reptile and bug shows.

n 1978, Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch teamed to open the first Morton’s in Chicago. The restaurant has grown to more than 70 locations, from L.A. to Manhattan, Shanghai to Mexico City. Morton’s has garnered a reputation for its prime steaks, VIP hospitality and extensive wine list. Guests choose Morton’s to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, host a business meeting or meet colleagues and friends for an after-work happy hour.

Morton’s The Steakhouse 6250 Canoga Ave. Woodland Hills 818.703.7272 mortons.com

Like all great steakhouses, Morton’s starts with the meat. All locations serve USDA Prime aged steaks, a designation based on the amount of fat within the muscle. Less than two percent of beef in the U.S. is graded “USDA Prime.” All meat served at Morton’s has been aged between 23 and 28 days, custom cut to Morton’s specifications by experienced meat cutters. Morton’s most popular cuts include the bone-in ribeye, center-cut filet mignon, porterhouse and the signature New York strip. For those who like a bit of heat, the Cajun ribeye and the Five Peppercorn Rubbed Prime strip steak offer an extra kick. Guests at Morton’s in Woodland Hills enjoy the same menu offered at Morton’s worldwide. Starters include the popular Ahi Tuna Tower of seasoned ahi, avocado, mango, pico de gallo and crushed wonton crisps. Other selections include a Maine lobster cocktail, jumbo lump crabmeat cocktail, jumbo shrimp Alexander and short rib steak tacos. Paired with a chilled martini or a glass from Morton’s impressively eclectic wines from around the world, the appetizer menu is perfect for winding down after a hard day at the office. Morton’s serves a variety of soups and salads, including the baked five-onion soup, lobster bisque, center-cut iceberg served with chopped egg, tomato, bacon, and blue cheese. Morton’s Salad is romaine and iceberg lettuce with chopped egg, cucumber, blue cheese, bacon, purple onion and avocado in a Dijon vinaigrette. Morton’s menu also offers plenty of options for guests who would prefer not to eat red meat. Popular choices include Chicken Christopher, Chicken Bianco, baked jumbo stuffed shrimp, cold water lobster tail and honey chili glazed salmon fillet. Top steakhouses earn notice for delicious sides. Morton’s is no exception, offering steamed or grilled jumbo asparagus, creamed spinach or corn, Chicago-style horseradish mashed potatoes, parmesan truffle shoestring fries and other delectable choices. Guests should save room for dessert because Morton’s has some legendary options for chocoholics. Morton’s Legendary Hot Chocolate Cake is the restaurant’s version of molten chocolate cake and can be shared by two or the entire table. Morton’s Legendary Sundae layers the Hot Chocolate Cake with vanilla Häagen Dazs, topped with caramel sauce and fresh whipped cream. Morton’s Power Hour is the ultimate happy hour experience. Sunday through Friday from open to 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close, the restaurant offers a special beer and wine by the glass, specially priced Mortinis, and bar bites. Morton’s Warner Center location can host your next special event or business meeting with a spacious boardroom, impressive wine list, full bar, state of the art audio-visual technology and Wi-Fi. The experienced staff can help with everything from florals to valet parking, making it an event to remember. Morton’s can host events for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with break service available. n

Eliminating

Sinus Misery By Elena Richards

A

nyone who has suffered through the pain and discomfort of severe sinus infections knows just how debilitating this can be. While not life-threatening, the severe headaches and facial pain, the inability to focus and concentrate, the incessant sneezing, congestion and runny nose that often accompany these conditions can make life down right miserable. Many people who suffer with these symptoms have no idea that these conditions are not just treatable but actually curable. Dr. Alen Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.S., is the founder and director of the Southern California Sinus Institute (SCSI). He founded this center in 2009 after discovering patients traveling long distances to see him to manage their complex medical problems. Today, the Southern

74

Calabasas Style

California Sinus Institute has become the premier sinus center in all of Southern California, a place where thousands of patients have benefitted by Dr. Cohen’s life-changing procedures. More than 37 million Americans suffer from at least one episode of acute sinusitis each year. According to Dr. Cohen, the prevalence of sinusitis has soared in the last decade – especially here in Southern California due possibly to the increase in allergies, pollution, urban sprawl, and the increased resistance to antibiotics. While some people only get rare and/or moderate symptoms, many people suffer with chronic or recurrent acute sinusitis, a condition where people chronically develop severe facial pain along the sinuses, infected discharge from the nasal cavities, low-grade fevers, severe congestion and allergic inflammation.

According to Dr. Cohen, if this condition lasts for 2-4 weeks at a time requiring antibiotics or steroids, the patient is usually diagnosed with recurrent acute sinusitis. If the condition lasts longer than 12 weeks, then it is termed chronic sinusitis. The unfortunate problem is that many seeking help are diagnosed incorrectly or not diagnosed at all, and continue to suffer for years and years with no help in sight. Dr. Cohen states, “Many patients routinely come to me on various nasal sprays, over-the-counter decongestants, antihistamines and various other medicines and tired of the run-around seeking definitive help. That’s where I can help.” Dr. Cohen wants patients to know that they don’t have to continue to suffer, as there are now revolutionary procedures available to help patients with these miserable conditions. Most of these procedures can be done in the office under local anesthesia (just like going to the dentist) without any bleeding, packing or discomfort, and patients can go back to work the next day. The most common procedure he performs is the revolutionary Balloon Sinuplasty™ procedure, in which he is one of the top three performers on the West Coast. This amazing procedure dilates the sinus openings with a balloon (just like opening a clogged artery around the heart) so the sinuses can drain and you can breathe better without headaches and recurrent infections. Dr. Cohen has also personally pioneered a breakthrough procedure in the treatment of more advanced chronic sinusitis, deviated septums, and nasal polyps called Minimally Invasive Image Guided Sinus Surgery (MIGSS™). One of Dr. Cohen’s patients stated that severe sinus headaches with acute internal allergic inflammation degraded the quality of his life for more than 20 years. Several other ear, nose and throat specialists treated his complex problems of nasal and sinus pathology but never got the improvement he was seeking. In contrast, Dr. Cohen delivered results. After comprehensively evaluating this patient, Dr. Cohen performed in-office Balloon Sinuplasty™ and turbinate reduction under local anesthesia in less than an hour, and the patient was back to work the next day feeling years better. These procedures resulted in the patient’s ability to breathe without restriction through his nose, alleviated all his sinus headaches, and most importantly significantly improved the patient’s quality of life. This patient was able to resume normal activities within a day of the procedure being performed. Considered by his patients and prominent physicians as the best sinus surgeon in Los Angeles, Dr. Cohen was again named a Los Angeles Magazine Super Doctor for 2015. Dr. Cohen operates at premier surgical facilities in Los Angeles, Encino-Tarzana and West Hills. What stands out most about Dr. Cohen is his compassion and professionalism in the treatment of his patients. This quality is not only expressed by the multitude of patients he has treated for years but by the numerous physicians who refer him patients regularly and come to see him as patients themselves. n

PEACE, LOVE, CURE 2nd Annual PINK Boutique By Sabrina Samedi

Photography by Susan Vizvary

Let’s go team! The 2nd Annual PINK boutique represented another great way to support the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Multiple vendors including Stella and Dot, Strut-This, 19 Queensgate and Two Sisters Ink gathered at the home of Beth Shore on Aug. 28 to help support Susan Vizvary and her team in the Avon Walk. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised went directly to help to support and fund research to find a cure or prevention for breast cancer as well as create, manage and grow programs dedicated to enabling all patients access to quality care.

WEST HILLS HOSPITAL BREAST CANCER SEMINAR By Sabrina Samedi West Hills Hospital hosted a breast health seminar on Oct. 2 to support The National Breast Care Coalition’s Breast Cancer Deadline 2020, a publically stated deadline for the end of breast cancer. Commencing the health-awareness event, Dr. Omid Shaye reviewed breast health facts while also moderating the insightful event. Supervisor Thelma Reeves and Dr. Bruce Shragg led the event’s diagnostic options seminar. Dr. Michael Benjamin, Dr. David Schreier and Dr. Sumita Bhatia led the cancer treatment options segment. Donna Boelke, a breast cancer survivor, closed the evening by sharing her story. The seminar series provided guests with knowledge regarding risks of developing breast cancer and how to prevent it. The seminar also advocated for guests to join the movement to end breast cancer by 2020 by performing breast self-exams, talking to their family doctors, and getting appropriate screenings such as mammograms.

76

Calabasas Style

Vizvary described the mission behind the fundraiser as “12 woman, 12 reasons, one cause.” She added, “Everyone on our team has been touched by breast cancer in one way or another… We are motivated to help find a cure in the big picture, but in the smaller picture, we raise money and walk to bring awareness to how serious breast cancer is.”

Ask the

Pharmacist Q A

I have never had a flu shot before, but I am seeing them available everywhere. Should I get one? Are they safe? What about my kids?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone older than six months get a flu shot annually. Every year in the U.S., thousands of people die of the flu. Most of the deaths occur in the very young, very old and those with other health conditions. By getting a shot, you are not only protecting yourself but others around you who may be at greater risk for complications including pneumonia. The flu shot is very safe. You cannot get the flu from a flu shot, according to the CDC. The vaccine is “inactive,” also known as “dead.” You may feel a little tired or achy for 24-48 hours, especially the first time you receive a flu shot. More common, however, is a sore arm or redness in the injection spot. There are more flu-vaccine choices than ever this season. The traditional flu shot protects against three strains of flu. A higher dosage of the three-strain vaccine is recommended for those over age 65, although the traditional dose is still adequate. A new four-strain (quadrivalent) injection protects against the same three strains, plus an additional B strain. A new intradermal injection uses a small needle that goes under the skin rather than into the muscle. FluMist, a nasal spray, provides protection against four strains. With FluMist, you could experience a runny nose, cough, sore throat or headache, but no flu. This year, the CDC recommends FluMist for all kids ages 2-8. There is also a preservative-free vaccine for those concerned about mercury. It is recommended you get a flu shot every year because the strains in the vaccine change each year, and your immune response decreases with time. Once you receive your shot, it takes about two weeks for the antibodies to develop in your body that will fight off the virus if you are exposed. Although the vaccine is not guaranteed if the strain is not a perfect match, it should still give you some protection, resulting in milder symptoms. n

Smile with

West Hills Smiles

By Pax Ansley Photography By Marvin Steindler

D

rs. Pasha Hakimzadeh and Ben Reyhani of West Hills Smiles have become well recognized among Angelenos in the last several years. West Hills Smiles offers anti-aging esthetic dentistry in a state-of-the-art facility.

With a track record of excellence, Drs. Pasha and Ben are firm believers in customer service. Their message to new patients is, “Simply put yourself in the hands of our concierge, relax and don’t worry about anything. The only thing you should be concerned about is enjoying the experience. If you want something, please ask.”

Q A

Why did you get into cosmetic dentistry?

I think early on, this was an area we wanted to concentrate on because of the happiness and excitement it brought to our patients. The energy level during the process of anti-aging or a smile design is great, and the entire experience and outcome becomes very rewarding both for us and our patients.

Q A

What is your practice philosophy and what should patients know about West Hills Smiles?

We believe in a higher standard of care. We are a team who are dedicated to meeting your needs and exceed your expectations. At West Hills Smiles, we aim to provide a

80

Calabasas Style

completely different experience. In addition to utilizing advanced technology and top-quality dental materials, we provide unsurpassed client care and serve as a channel for educating our patients. We offer a relaxed atmosphere and a caring spirit while we help you be healthy, happy and proud of your smile.

Q A

What’s a normal day look like?

We usually start at 7 a.m. We have three hygienists, and the average day is usually a mix of patients who are coming in for their routine wellness cleanings, new patient consults for antiaging, and smile-makeover treatments. I think immediately you could sense the energy in our office. We like coming to work and we have a great time serving our patients.

Q A

How do you set yourselves apart?

Our personalized approach and personalities. We like having fun, and we brought that to our office. We have fun working together, and our patients see and feel the fun in this office. We offer our patients a different experience of care while improving the quality of their oral health.

Q A

Since your office specializes in anti-aging dentistry and smile makeovers, how many visits are required, and what can each visitor expect from start to finish?

With age, your smile can lose vibrancy due to discoloration, tooth loss and excessive grinding. Lips begin to sag over time and lose their elasticity. Gravity and aging make our lower face shrink and sink in, resulting in less of our upper teeth showing as we speak or smile. Loss of collagen and diminished muscle tone allow wrinkles to form around our mouth and lips.

feels completely served. Each patient knows why they’re there for each visit, how long it will be, and even where to park. They know they’ll be recognized and warmly welcomed. When it’s time to leave, the concierge will make sure they understand the treatment just completed, any ongoing treatment needs, and the financial arrangements for today and into the future.

Your first visit with us will be our anti-aging and esthetic evaluation. We will take detailed photographs of your teeth. This will be followed by taking a detailed impression of your teeth and bite. This will allow us and our ceramist to design a model of your teeth that are transformed into a new smile using a special wax. The wax up serves as a preview of the final smile makeover. Your second visit will start by going over your diagnostic wax-up model and pictures of your new smile. This will be followed by preparing your new veneers and transferring the customized temporary veneers to the mouth. These temporary veneers are made up of special dental materials, and the mock-up is a duplicate of the wax-up. This gives you the ability to test-drive the new smile. The diagnostic information gathered from the wax-up and temporary veneers will give us valuable information about the color, shape and size of the permanent veneers before placing them in the mouth. After wearing the temporary smile, you will return for your third visit where you will provide feedback on the look and fit of your veneers. Many patients love the look and feel right away, but some would like to make some modifications on shade, shape or size before sharing the information with our ceramist and lab for finalization. Once you and your doctor are completely satisfied with your smile, we will have our master ceramist handcraft your veneers, with every detail represents love and tradition of his craftsmanship. We will finish your new smile by cementing your veneers with our own custom colorist. This will minimize any critical errors in the color matching of your new veneers and making sure we get it right the first time. We will promise to deliver a natural smile that suits you best and to make you look good.

Q A

Ford GT Marque Day The Iconic Ford GT: Ford’s Supercar answer to the European exotics. American-bred to beat all other sports cars in the world. Inspired by the Ford GT40 of the ‘60s, the 2005-2006 production run was a huge hit for auto enthusiasts. Ford sold 4,038 units of its GT in that time. As the demand was much greater than the supply, it instantly became a “collector car.” Over the last few years, the Ford GT has skyrocketed in price. If you can find a lowmileage example, be ready to shell out close to $300,000. Speculators believe that the Ford GT will continue to grow in value, as will demand. Truly a rare object to be seen, let alone owned. It is not often that you see five Ford GTs together, or even 10. But at Supercar Sunday on Ford GT Marque Day, we had 26! Doing the math at conservative prices, there was more than $6.5 million in just Ford GTs. Where did they come from? All over California: From as far as San Diego and San Francisco and everything in between! It was an incredible showing of one of the finest products Ford has every produced, as well as an illustration of the Ford GT owners’ passions! n

The Dailey Method The Best Hour of Your Day By Elena Richards Photography by Marvin Steindler

I

t’s commonly known that the most effective exercise is done regularly. Ask people who work out at The Dailey Method® in Calabasas and find they not only love attending class, they are “addicted” to it. You would be, too, if you had stronger, leaner muscles after (regularly) going for only one month! The Dailey Method is a unique combination of ballet barre work, core conditioning, muscle strengthening, yoga and orthopedic exercises. Movements are non-impact but are weightbearing, which provides students the most efficient method to exercise muscles while also preventing injury. People see physical results quickly because the muscles respond naturally to this approach. In addition, students receive personal attention such as hands-on adjustments, a perk rarely found in larger, more traditional fitness classes.

94

Calabasas Style

Get ready for a full-body workout. The challenging Dailey Barre one-hour class strengthens, tones and lengthens the entire body. All movement is controlled, focused, effective and safe. Proper alignment is the primary focus, and each set of exercises is followed by a series of active stretches to develop sculpted muscles. Body and mind work together throughout the entire hour. Through this process, body, posture and physical awareness are transformed. And you see results quickly. Students attending class three times per week for six weeks experience a significant increase in their strength and flexibility. They also notice improved tone in their body. Greater results are achieved with more frequency and continuity. Lauren Potter, instructor and co-owner of the Calabasas studio, says, “Beyond making you

stronger and more toned, our students gain better alignment of their entire bodies. Each class is designed to have the perfect balance of stretching and strengthening. It is amazing how this makes you feel, but more importantly, this approach helps you maintain long-term physical health.” Jill Dailey, a pioneer in barre fitness classes, started The Dailey Method in 2000, and it has expanded to 55 studios across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Paris. The original studio in San Francisco’s Marina neighborhood was the first barre class of its kind on the west coast, and The Dailey Method has been around longer than any other barre studio. The Calabasas studio’s other co-owner/ instructor, Helga Theodors, explains why it’s important to keep classes innovative. “We know that to improve our bodies and fitness

levels, it’s important to be challenged, both mentally and physically. We change the class every day so our students don’t lose their mental engagement, which impacts the entire mind-body connection.” Students range in age from 14 to 80. More than anything else, they are committed to their bodies and this workout. The studio offers multiple classes seven days a week to accommodate even the busiest schedule. The Dailey Method is also a safe workout for pre- and post-natal care, and many students attend classes throughout their pregnancy. The Calabasas studio also offers childcare, so even busy moms can exercise knowing their kids are having fun in the room next door. Every student, regardless of age and fitness level, gets an incredible amount of fulfillment from attending The Dailey Method. Some say they simply feel happy after each class. Others say the workouts give them confidence and improve their self-image and self-esteem. For many, it also gives them a sense of community – students often invite their friends to share the experience. To top it all off, classes are extremely affordable – costing less than many of the other fitness classes in the area. For more information, visit the website to learn about introductory offers. n

BEHAVIORAL FINANCE By Mark Wendell

I

t is said that the X factor in economics is human behavior, which is why economics is said to be a social science. The study of investor behavior is referred to as behavioral finance, the combination of investments, economics and psychology, “a field of finance that proposes psychology-based theories to explain stock market anomalies…[W]ithin behavioral finance, it is assumed that the information structure and characteristics of market participants systematically influence individuals’ investment decisions as well as market outcomes.” (Source: Investopedia)

In a perfect world, investors would be cold, calculating machines, making decisions with dry logic and obsessive numbers-only

100 Calabasas Style

analysis. But because world events and economies are shaped by the behaviors of emotionally driven human beings, Wall Street is inherently unpredictable. UC Berkeley Philip Tetlock wrote that “the vast majority of predicting experts performed worse than random chance, that fancy degrees were mostly useless when it came to forecasting.” The main reason for wellknown experts’ faulty predictions is overconfidence, a state of denial about being wrong. Tetlock refers to this effect as “confirmation bias,” which leads people to give disproportionate weight to evidence that matches their prejudices and will cause them to only seek information that confirms their beliefs. He says the experts he studied believed they were “dispassionately analyzing the evidence when they were really indulging in selective ignorance as they

explained away dissonant facts and contradictory data, and therefore, became prisoners of their preconceptions.” Most individual investors also tend to be overconfident about the scope and accuracy of their knowledge to discern the realities of assessing the actual value of an investment. Behavioral-finance researchers have concluded that most people tend to be instinctively risk-averse. An example is in our likelihood to overly diversify our portfolios when a higher return might be earned on a narrower investment. The reason is that most people give more weight to the prospect of losing than they give to prospect of gaining. We feel the intensity of the pain of loss and experience it as personal failure, remorse or regret more acutely than we feel the intensity of the exhilaration of pleasure

Financial Brief or pride of an equivalent gain. Ironically, people tend to be most risk-averse when they’re facing gains and most risk-seeking when they’re facing losses. The way people double-down in buying additional shares of a severely depreciated stock with self-deceiving hopes of making a fortune demonstrate this. People have a strong aversion to regret, and they regret action more than inaction, which explains why most investors sit passively on losing investments in the hope of an improbable turnaround when taking the active step of selling would often be in their best interest. This concept, termed “prospect theory” by two research psychologists, Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman, described it as “lose aversion” and “inertia.” Selling a losing position or reallocating an underperforming portfolio triggers a feeling of regret over having made an unwise decision in the past, even though failure to take action in the present might result in even deeper regret in the future. Thanks to inertia, people stick to the status quo, which offers comfort in thinking they’ve suffered only “paper losses,” whereas changing an investment may put an actual dollar value on a loss. If we decide not to act, we tell ourselves we’ll have nothing to regret, no painful emotions to face for the time being. Fear of regret inspires investors to make foolhardy investment decisions that conform with a preconceived personal “smart” self-image or maybe drive a desire to live up to their friends’ expectations. Then with peer pressure, we remain detached with “paper losses,” and the investments disintegrate. There is a big difference between prudently taking a corrective action and blindly procrastinating just to avoid regret. “Framing” is one of the most widely mentioned concepts in behavioral finance. It is commonly used in the context of benchmarking, or framing, an investor’s returns to fit one’s expectations, lifestyle and goals rather than merely aiming for the highest market returns. Specifically, we use valid and convenient par values, usually market indices and the media’s impressions of their results, as the frame of reference to measure the outcome from our investing. A better valid frame of reference against which to measure success or failure might be using a desired personal future-dollar value, a net-worth goal or an income goal as a target more appropriate than simply using a specific rate of return. This concept provides a human dimension for measuring the success of investment management, rather than focusing solely on generic market performance numbers, the most common measuring method. This subjective personal reference-point approach is typically difficult to articulate, usually due to an investor’s inability to have realistic, consistent or honest expectations for investment results. Some investors would rather frame their results generically and against an impersonal market

benchmark rather than define investment results in terms of sensitive personal values and then not feel personal with the results. Often it is easier to blame Washington, an investment company or the financial advisor for unsatisfying results. In addition to personally framed success goals, it is vitally important that we use an appropriate and realistic frame that takes into account the risk and return in a portfolio (risk adjusted return) when establishing goals for measuring success or the lack thereof. Conversely, we must not allow ourselves to get caught up in the “narrative fallacy” defined by Nassim Taleb as “our vulnerability to over-interpretation and our predilection for compact stories over raw truths.” Our perceptions and beliefs are formed by consistent repetitions in the media, but humans are prone to get lost in facts and statistics, and easily believe nonsense if it sounds plausible. He states further that “it takes considerable effort to see facts while withholding judgment and resisting explanations.” Investors want to feel they’re making logical and prudent decisions regarding their investments, yet research in behavioral investing makes clear how often people act out behaviors that may actually be contrary to their best interests. Adopting a professionally designed, disciplined and honest long-term investment strategy with the ongoing guidance of a professional advisor is the best defense against self-defeating irrational behaviors. Not only should a plan contain personal goal-referenced, outcome-based, risk-managed strategies, it should also be designed to minimize emotional behavioral triggers if the investor is to avoid serious financial mistakes. Remember, stuff will happen to us and to our self-imagined storyline, and since we are our own biggest advocate and worst enemy, how we respond to stuff will influence our hopes, dreams and investment schemes. n

GRAB A BALL AND PLAY By Sabrina Samedi

“Not only does a game have a healing effect on your mind, body and soul, but playing with a ball is a memory maker. We are trying to give children lasting memories that positively impact their future decisions,” Schneider said. One of the principal concepts behind Grab a Ball and Play is to teach kids accountability while providing them with the chance to play. Such involvement in sports leads to better health, greater interest in academics and improved coping skills. Schneider identifies sports as a universal language, and the ball is what supersedes barriers. “Anyone from any part of the world can pick up a ball and play” she said. “A ball does not discriminate.”

When it comes to developing a sense of camaraderie amongst youth, the world is shaped like a ball, according to Grab a Ball and Play co-founder Marnie Schneider. She, along with Grab a Ball partner Jazmin Erving, hosted a Grab a Ball and Play launch event on Oct. 1 to raise funds to purchase new footballs, basketballs and soccer balls that are then donated to children in need.

The art gallery opening featured artist Butch Harman, creator of “Fairly OddParents” alongside artwork from “Despicable Me” writer Cinco Paul. The happening also included a silent auction for Nickelodeon gift baskets and artwork. Proceeds from art sales were donated to the theater arts boosters at Agoura High School.

Reetu Dua’s Book Release Party By Sabrina Samedi Photography by Debbie Vaccarello First-time author and Calabasas resident Reetu Dua celebrated the release of her children’s book Ari Loves the Holidays on Oct. 17 at the home of Rajeev and Tunisha Tandon. Reetu drew inspiration from motherhood and the passion she has for teaching children about the wonderful opportunities life has to offer. Reetu explained the motivation behind Ari Loves the Holidays: “Holidays bring joy, spark curiosity and teach values and tradition. Having kids brings out sides of a person that they never knew they had. Once I saw how much my children enjoyed the holidays, the passion started, and the writing process became so natural.” Reetu shared her sentiments on holidays being a year-long celebration, “If you think of everyday as a holiday, you will learn to celebrate life.” For Reetu, the celebrations will continue as she has a series of books coming out, the next one being Ari Loves the Solar System. Reetu assured that the book “is out of this world!”

All you need is love, which most certainly was the sentiment behind the Loving Home Hospice for Children. The Loving Home jazz mixer took place Sept. 11 at Saddle Peak Lodge in Calabasas. Loving Home founder Dylette Davis explained the motivation behind hosting a jazz mixer: “We wanted to create an atmosphere that would encourage people to be open about discussing such heavy issues such as hospice and palliative care, as well as an atmosphere that lends itself toward socializing among the guests and members of the organization alike.”

CALABASAS PUMPKIN KICKOFF By Sabrina Samedi Photography by Marvin Steindler Some traditions are worth keeping, and that was the case as the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce and the City of Calabasas kicked off celebrations for the annual Calabasas Pumpkin Festival by raising the festival’s pumpkin mascot, Punky, to the Acura 101 West rooftop Sept. 18. The traditional event welcomed business and community members alike. The celebration featured a magician and balloon artists for children and young-at-heart adult’s entertai nmen t. In addition to free entry, family raffle winners got complimentary children’s tickets, good for any two of the following: face painting, derby car building, pumpkin painting, or this year’s newest attraction, the Safari Train ride.

uccess in your business is the direct result of what you know – and whom you know. Your active participation in the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce gives a big boost to both. The chamber is the largest and most influential business organization in this area, and the one that gives you the greatest access to new clients, new ideas and other resources that will grow your business.

Fusion’s Community Education Night By Elena Richards

A research study conducted by Atlanta-based The Schapiro Group, Inc. says that advocates of chambers of commerce have long believed that when a company is a member of the local chamber, it is doing the right thing for the business and the community. Business owners and consumers believe that being active in the local chamber is an effective business strategy and feel the company uses good business practices and communicates that they’re reputable. When consumers see a business being active in its local chamber, they will use their products and services over their competitors. Consumers also feel the business supports the economic growth for their community.

Fusion Academy and Learning Center in Woodland Hills hosted a community education night on healthy relationships and communication skills on Oct. 2. Dr. George Cave, licensed psychologist and author of Just Be a Dad, gave the keynote speech. He is an expert in working with adolescents, relationships and parenting.

DID YOU REALLY JUST GIVE YOUR

Credit Information to a Hacker?

H

By Marc Cohen as it really been a year since we talked about holiday shopping and what to buy? Not only are we confused about the purchase options, we are now ultra-paranoid about the safety of buying online.

I am a big fan of PayPal. This service is free and allows you to charge without the vendor seeing your credit card numbers. PayPal makes the payment for you. Just make sure you have used a highly encrypted password.

You know the drill: You walk into a store and hand a 16-year-old your credit card and wonder if he or she will use it to rent a Ferrari. So first, how do we protect ourselves from online predators?

The biggest tech item this year is the release of the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. It still remains one of the top phones in the world, and with the addition of the 6 Plus at a whopping 5½ inches, it became much more attractive. If you are not an iPhone fan like me, check out the Samsung line of phones. Admittedly, the Samsung line has had many of the great new iPhone features long before Apple.

Major stores, including Target and Neiman Marcus, have been hacked in the past year. Safety starts with common sense. Don’t use passwords like 123456 or your child’s name. These are far too simple to detect and increase your chances of getting hacked. As much of a pain as this might be, don’t use the same password everywhere. Change it up for each account you might use. When using apps such as Facebook or any social media site, do not reveal personal information. This is an easy way for a hacker to try to guess your password. When using a password always enter different symbols and letters such as @techradio.4271 (that’s mine, by the way, in case you need to buy something using my account. Just kidding; my password is 1234). On a PC or Mac, make sure you are using an updated anti-virus program and a spyware detector. I use LifeLock to protect my credit. This is a service that will alert you to changes detected with your credit cards or Social Security numbers. If someone tries to open a new account, it will alert you and prevent the thief from opening the account.

Now, on to the fun stuff.

There is a whole new line of smart watches, if you are so inclined. Apple’s new watch won’t be out until next year but there is large collection of watches to choose from, including the Pebble Watch, which was one of the first and still very popular. And if you want to be the creepy neighbor, opt for the JDI Phantom Quadcopter and add the optional Go Pro Camera. It gives you 15 minutes of flight time and runs about $479. Just don’t get arrested for spying. I wish you all a great holiday season, especially if you want to get me that cool, new drone. Wait, did I say that out loud??? n See you on the radio. Marc

MUSE HIGH SCHOOL RIBBON CUTTING By Sabrina Samedi

Photography by Renee Appell

MUSE School founders Suzy Amis Cameron and Rebecca Amis introduced MUSE High School to Calabasas on Oct. 3. MUSE’s mission is to encourage and prepare students to live consciously with themselves, one another and the planet. Dr. Elliot Washor, co-founder of Big Picture Learning and MUSE academic advisor, was the ceremony’s keynote speaker. Washor is committed to ensuring that all students are not just well prepared for a life inside the classroom but for life outside school grounds. He urges that the goal of MUSE be “not merely to graduate every student but to prepare graduates who are uncommonly ready for success in their workplaces and their communities.”

Rebecca recounts the ceremony as a time where “the outside world is finally getting that we must build our school curriculum around the child, not build the child around the school curriculum.” MUSE advocates that through passionbased learning, students achieve not only academic excellence, but they also gain self-efficacy skills and become considerate global citizens.
