Filled with Spirit !

Called to be Spirit Filled ~ that is our theme for the month of May. Using the story of Jesus’ baptism and the Pentecost story in Acts, we will explore what it means to be a Spirit filled people. Both stories contain elements of both affirmation and challenge as we seek to live out our lives as faithful people. But we cannot do this alone.

We must remember that the context of all biblical stories is community and communal living. The notion of rugged individualism would have been a foreign concept those in Jesus day.

Who are the people in your life who have inspired you to live the life you are living? Who has called you out in such away over your life time to help you reframe, rethink your perspective on life and living? As we engage the Pentecost story, these will be the primary questions that focus our exploration. The breaking of barriers, social and personal; the quest to bring full circle the desire for inclusion and diversity; these are all thrusts of the story of Pentecost. Pentecost is a time to engage others in ways not previously imagined; to listen with our inner soul to the spirit of another; to have previously held notions of who we are and how we are perceived to be challenged and affirmed. All these will be part of our exploration in May. And of course, Pentecost Sunday (May 15th) itself will be filled with surprises, joy and much laughter.

It’s my favourite liturgical holiday and as always we have a high energy service planned for that day that will leave you dancing from the church.

We are indeed call to be a Spirit-filled people.

Youth/Sunday School Alongside the Sunday Worship focus, the children will also be exploring what it means to be spirit filled.

Through activities, stories and examples, they will be learning to recognize the signs of the Spirit active in themselves and others. Pentecost Sunday, May 15th, will be a fun energetic all ages special worship service. We hope you will mark that on your calendar.

Art Auction / Book Sale Just a reminder that our Art Auction and Book Sale is on Saturday, May 7th from 9:00am to 1:00pm in the Hall. Thanks to all who have signed up to help set it up and help at the sale.

If you have books for the sale you can bring them in and store them in the choir room or the Library. It would be helpful if you could keep them until the 5 th (Thursday) or 6th (Friday) as storage space is at a premium. Art work can be brought in anytime during the day (until 5:00pm) from now on and stored carefully in the choir room. If you do not want to fill in the information sheet please still bring in your art pieces. The sheet was just for the buyer’s interest and not essential for the sale.

Wanda could use more muffins and loaves for the coffee bar and 1 or 2 more people to help serve even for an hour, so if you can help her out she would be grateful.

We will be starting to set up on Friday, 6th at 9:30am but just come when you can spare an hour or so.

We will be in the Hall for most of the day so any time is good. See you on the 6th!!!!

Library News for May 2016 In keeping with the celebration of Pentecost this month, our theme for May is “filled with the spirit”. How do we become filled with the spirit of God and how will that affect our way of being? Will our faith be deeper and will we act in the way that Jesus did by turning the world upside down?

The library has several books about people who were touched by the spirit and how this affected their lives. The first book highlighted is Spong’s book, Here I Stand. “This story of his life’s pilgrimage is a rare and compelling exercise in spiritual and intellectual autobiography.” Feisty and Fearless is a biography of Lois Wilson by Janice Meighan. This book “stays true to Lois Wilson’s call that we be better than we are... by beautifully showing how that has been Lois’s life journey and inspiring us to follow her remarkable lead. The last book to be highlighted is Nora Gallagher’s book, Things Seen and Unseen, A year Lived in Faith. Gallagher’s gift to her readers is a vision of working, suffering, rejoicing faith.

A special book for young adults to read is I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, a young Pakistani girl who stood up for women’s education in her country and changed the world in doing so. A good book for younger children is Gandhi, A March to the Sea by Alice B. McGinty illustrated by Thomas Gonzalez. It is the story of a remarkable man whose non violent actions freed India and influenced the whole world.

Don’t forget to check out the new books on the table in the Library and bring back the books you have finished reading. Thank you!

Come Walk with the Beings; All Beings Confluence Walk with the Beings; All Beings confluence has been a powerful and breathtaking creative experience for CBUC and the wider community. The workshop to create new Beings was an inspiration for the participants and an opportunity to build relationship between our community and other likeminded community organizations. The beautiful panels created at the workshop, including those by Leny Winkel and Maureen Shields, are joining the Confluence to be shared with others.

About a thousand people have joined us between April 20 and 28th to walk, dance, meditate and play with the Beings. The experience drew in people from many facets of our shared community in Victoria. Many people were so moved and inspired by the experience that they came back again (and again!) with family, friends and colleagues. Experiencing the growth of energy and engagement with the Beings through word of mouth has been awe inspiring!

We heard again and again how moved and inspired people were – by the beauty and accessibility of the art - and also by the peace, welcome and invitation of the place. Congratulations to all of those involved for such a successful event!

We will continue to gather in stories about people’s experiences and are committed to collecting lessons learned. There will continue to be opportunities to further the conversations that have been spurred along by this experience exploring our role as a church for building right relationships with the web of life in the 21st century.

A huge expression of gratitude to the many volunteers and supporters that made this such a successful event for the church and our community! We are extremely grateful to Martha Cole for her vision and leadership in bringing All Beings Confluence to life, and offering her gifted leadership at the workshop here. Deep gratitude to our partners for their support and engagement, especially to First Metropolitan United Church. Special thanks to the coordinating committee; Clare Atwell, Kari Hansen Tyler, Susan Draper, Sarah Schoeck, Janet Gray (First Met), Brian Shields, Sharon Strong, Beth Brathwaite, and Jill Croft.

Family Camp Friday June 10th to Sunday June 12th Join others from CBUC for a Spirit filled weekend of fun, food and community at the United Church camp on Shawnigan Lake.

Camp Pringle has undergone extensive renovations over the last 5 years include the recent renovation of the dock area.

We arrive Friday evening after dinner for community building time and a chance to settle in. Saturday morning is a time of organized activities and the afternoon is mostly free time to be at the lake, go for a hike etc.  Families with small children have a room together to themselves. Families with older children will either be in the same room or adjoining rooms. Teens sometimes opt to have a cabin together.  All the meals are provided from Friday Snack time to Sunday lunch. Community help with dishes, clean up and activities makes this a wonderful and relaxing weekend away in beautiful setting.

This weekend is often a time to get to know others at CBUC in a much deeper way. Worship Sunday morning is at the outdoor chapel. While we encourage folks to come for the whole weekend, you are welcome to come out just for the day on Saturday. Cost is $60 per person or $175 per family and includes all meals, accommodations and activities. A day rate for those wishing to come only for the day on Saturday or Sunday is available. Children under 2 are free. Cost includes accommodation, activities and all meals. Registration is available online or by calling the church office. 

CBUC Celebration Sunday and Church Picnic June 19th Save the date for our final wrap up Sunday celebrating this year in pictures, words, songs and stories. A time for celebration and as is always our custom, the sharing of food. Hot Dogs, burgers, veggie plate and dessert will follow worship in our front yard and there will be games and activities for children to play while adults visit. This is an invitation for all ages to stay and enjoy fellowship together.

Congratulations To Rochelle Graham Our candidate for ministry who graduates from VST (Vancouver School of Theology) on May 9th. She graduates with a Masters degree in Public and Pastoral Leadership. She and the church will continue to discern together with the church what the next steps will be for her internship which is the final requirement for Ordination. We will celebrate this step and graduation on Sunday May 1st during the service with a cake to follow during coffee time.

No charge and no need to register unless you're coming for lunch. 10am-12noon Israel/Palestine 101 Philip Sherwood has travelled throughout the West Bank and recently spent 10 days in Hebron as part of a peace-making delegation. He'll be able to answer your questions and bring you up to speed.

1- 3pm Non-violent strategies for change Barbara Lloyd, Program Coordinator for the UCC's Public Witness program and Rev. Marianna Harris, member of the BC United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel will be co-presenting at this interactive workshop. It will examine what a rights-based approach to peace-making looks like and how individuals and communities can work together to further the cause of peace and justice.

7pm Join us for the documentary film "Five Broken Cameras", followed by a deeper conversation that will open hearts and minds and spur us to taking meaningful action.

All are welcome! No faith affiliation is necessary- just a genuine desire to learn and foster justice and peace in Israel/Palestine.

Bishop John Shelby Spong - Fri & Sat Night July 22 and 23rd We are excited to be welcoming renowned author and speaker Bishop John Shelby Spong to Victoria this summer. Bishop Spong will speak on Friday and Saturday night for a two part lecture focused on his newest book “ Biblical Literalism: A Gentile Heresy�. Spong is known for his engaging speaking style and depth of content in his presentation. We are privileged to have him with us for these two evening. Tickets will be $35 each night or $50 for the two nights and will be available online and through the church office. A limited of 200 tickets will be available and we expect to sell out. As a congregation, you will be notified when the tickets go on sale in advance of the general public. Watch my emails and the church bulletin.
