“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. What an exciting time to be a part of the Columbus area community! Everywhere you look you can see change— new buildings going up; new faces joining our community. But beyond what’s visibly progressing, there are also many other changes happening—for instance, continued growth in our ‘culture of giving’ through successful events this year such as the Youth Philanthropy Contest and the Columbus Big Give. The Columbus Area Community Foundation Fund, an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation, is proud to

be a part of this progress by providing valuable funding for community improvement projects, and building partnerships with other community organizations and nonprofits. On behalf of the Fund Advisory Committee, I would like to thank all of the donors who make this work possible. We hope you will enjoy this year’s annual report: a snapshot of what CACFF has been able to accomplish this year, and our priorities for the future. Sincerely, Matt Gotschall CACFF Chair

2015-2016 STRATEGIC PRIORITIES CACFF has identified the following as strategic priorities for 2015-2016. Community & Capacity Building: Utilize the $300,000 from the Quality of Life Projects grant (see page 5) to help the four partners with their campaigns, build capacity, continue to improve quality of life, and increase inclusiveness in the community.

Youth Philanthropy Contest 2

Expand Childcare Options: Partner with other organizations to create increased opportunities for affordable, quality, early childhood care in Columbus. Grow the Unrestricted Endowment: Continue to grow the unrestricted endowment through outright, planned and memorial gifts.

NCF Annual Training

When Jordan Mueller returned to his hometown of Columbus in 2010, he knew he wanted to give back. So when the opportunity arose to join the Columbus Area Community Foundation Fund Advisory Committee, he jumped at the chance. This year Jordan and his wife Jennifer took their commitment to the Columbus area even futher by adding the CACFF as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy. This simple and smart way to give will help create opportunities in their hometown -opportunities that one day will benefit the couple’s first daughter, Brooke.

THE POWER OF AN UNRESTRICTED ENDOWMENT

What if your investment could provide for the Columbus area not just in your lifetime, but forever? Giving to the Unrestricted Endowment will do just that! An endowment is a permanent fund where

the principal is invested and a portion of the earnings are distributed annually for grantmaking. An unrestricted endowment provides the most opportunity as it

allows for flexibility as our Below: Graph shows community’s needs and growth of and dreams change. cumulative amount available to be granted To learn more about from a $100,000 giving to the CACFF endowment over 20 Unrestricted Endowment, years. visit cacffund.org.

CATALYTIC INVESTMENT: COLUMBUS QUALITY OF LIFE PROJECTS Years in the Making

Press conference announcing the Campaign.

A new health department; a new YMCA/Wellness Center, a new S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and math) Academy to be located in a new high school facility, and a new library/ cultural arts center. Most communities would be happy to have one of these projects in-progress. In Columbus, plans are in place for all four. Helping catalyze this progress is a $2,300,000 million investment from two local families and The Sherwood Foundation.

The Columbus Area Community Foundation Fund hosted a community visioning session in 2008 called “Vision 20/20.”

Administered by the Columbus Area Community Foundation Fund, this will create incentive for the completion of the four projects. Through December 31, 2017, each partner will receive a proportionate amount of the pool. For every $2 raised for their project, they’ll earn $1 more from the pool. After all partners reach their goal amount, an additional $500,000 from The Sherwood Foundation will be distributed $1 given for every $2 raised by partner org. until each reaches fundraising goal

proportionally to each project. An additional $300,000 investment from Sherwood and local donors will also be utilized by the Columbus Area Community Foundation Fund for training for all partners during the campaign, as well as to provide smaller grants for other quality of life projects and inclusiveness promotion throughout the community.

LIBRARY & ARTS CENTER fundraising goal: $2,720,000 CPS S.T.E.M. ACADEMY fundraising goal: $600,000 EAST-CENTRAL DISTRICT HEALTH DEPT. BUILDING fundraising goal: $340,000 WELLNESS/YMCA FACILITY fundraising goal: $340,000

This led to feasibility studies and greater collaboration between the Quality of Life project partners at the time. CACFF also provided a $1,000 grant for the Quality of Life Centers Study in 2009 comissioned by the City of Columbus.

CACFF members present a $1000 check in 2010 for the Quality of Life Center.

IMPACT GRANT: COLUMBUS BIG GIVE WEBSITE As planning began for the 2nd Annual Columbus Big Give (a 24-hour time of giving organized by members of the Columbus Area Philathropy Council) event, it became clear that a more sophisticated online giving platform was needed. Through a grant of $2,500 from the Columbus Area Community Foundation Fund, the Columbus Area Philanthropy Council was able to hire a local web developer to build a website to enable donors to seamlessly give via PayPal or credit card.
