MERSIN FROM RAILWAY STATION TO THE LIGHTHOUSE
ersin kentinin ilk imar planı olan ve 1938 yılında yürürlüğe girmiş olan Jansen Planı'nda da, Cumhuriyet döneminin ilk imar planını üretmiş olan Alman mimar-şehirci Hermann Jansen “Mersin Tarihi Kent Merkezi” olarak adlandırabileceğimiz alanı karakteristik özellikleri ile korumayı ve buradaki kentsel dokuya müdahaleyi sınırlandırmayı amaçlamıştır. Jansen'in o dönemdeki amacı, Mersin'e kimliğini kazandırmış ve Mersin'i diğer Doğu Akdeniz kentlerinden farklılaştıran kentsel bağlamını korumak olmuştur. Ancak Jansen Planı'nı takip eden süreçte üretilen kararlar, “Mersin Tarihi Kent Merkezi”nde kendini somut olarak ifade eden Mersin kimliğinin fiziksel, ekonomik ve sosyal olarak sürdürülebilirliğini sağlayamamıştır. Günümüzde Mersin kenti, liman ve ticarete dayalı kimliğini korumuş olsa da, ondokuzuncu yüzyıl sonu ve yirminci yüzyılın ilk yarısında göstermiş olduğu fiziksel bütünlüğü ve mekansal kurgusu, çeşitli müdahaleler ile zedelenmiş ve kaybolmaya yüz tutmuştur.
he first development plan of Mersin, called Jansen Plan, prepared by Hermann Jansen, a German architect-urbanist, and issued in 1938 aimed at preserving the distinctive characteristics of the area so-called “Mersin Historic City Centre” and limited interventions to the urban pattern. The objective of Jansen on that period was to protect the urban context of the city, which differentiated Mersin from other cities in East Mediterranean region. Nonetheless, the decisions taken in the period after Jansen Plan issued did not able to maintain the sustainability of Mersin identity physically, economically and socially that revealed itself concretely in “Mersin Historic City Centre”. At present, although Mersin protected her identity based on port and commerce, the physical unity and urban pattern of the city, constituted at the end of nineteenth century and at the beginning of twentieth century, were damaged and tend to be forgotten as a result of many interventions.

u çalışmanın çıkış noktası da Mersin'in ondokuzuncu yüzyıl sonu ve yirminci yüzyılın ilk yarısında oluşturmuş olduğu kentsel bağlam ve bu bağlamın sunduğu niteliklerdir. Ali Murat Merzeci'nin zengin Mersin koleksiyonundaki kartpostallar bu nitelikleri somut olarak ortaya koymaktadır. Bu zengin koleksiyon, günümüzde “Mersin Tarihi Kent Merkezi” olarak adlandırdığımız alanı bir bütün olarak algılama olanağını sağlamıştır.

ünümüze kadar Mersin'in yerel tarihine ilişkin kuşkusuz birçok değerli çalışma yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmayı diğerlerinden farklılaştıran, yazılı ve görsel malzemenin belli bir kurgu ile birbirini bütünleyen bir şekilde kullanılması ve Mersin'de belirli bir alana odaklanmış olmasıdır. Bu anlamda çalışmanın kendiliğinden ortaya koyduğu bir diğer olgu da, çalışma kapsamında kentin tarihi ve ticaret merkezi olarak tanımlanabilecek “Mersin Tarihi Kent Merkezi”nde oluşturulan gezi rotasıdır. Doğuda İstasyon'dan başlayan ve batıda Fener'e kadar devam eden bu gezi rotası, çalışma içinde bir poster ile görselleştirilmiş ve alanın bir bütün olarak algılanabilmesini sağlamıştır. Böylece okuyucunun da kartpostallar ve fotokartlar aracılığıyla bu gezi rotasında yol alması sağlanmaya çalışılmıştır.

u çerçevede, çalışma bir yandan Mersin kentinin yirminci yüzyıl ortalarına kadar göstermiş olduğu bütünlüğü ortaya koyarken, diğer yandan bir kent gezi rotasını da oluşturmuştur. Bu anlamda kitap, ilerleyen süreçte çalışmanın devamı olarak tasarlanabilecek yeni çalışmalara da zemin hazırlamaktadır.

alışmanın basımını üstlenerek kentin kültürel ortamına yepyeni bir soluk kazandıran Mersin Sanayi ve Ticaret Odası, bu kitap ile, oluşturulacak yeni bir dizinin başlangıcını da yapmış olmaktadır. Böylece “Mersin Kültür Kitapları” adlı kitap serisinin başlangıcı olan bu çalışmanın devamında, seriyi bir bütün haline getirecek yeni çalışmalar Mersin'e ve kent tarihi ve araştırmalarıyla ilgilenenlerin ilgisine kazandırılabilecektir. Öte yandan, bu çalışmaları tamamlayacak şekilde, geleceğe ilişkin vizyonun ve stratejilerin de ortaya konacağı yeni çalışmaların hayata geçirilmesi; bu çalışmada bir bütün olarak vurgulanan “Mersin Tarihi Kent Merkezi”nin yeniden canlandırılması, böylece geçmişten gelen değerleri ve sahip olduğu potansiyeller ile Mersin'in güçlü bir kent kimliğine kavuşmasını sağlayacaktır.

Conclusion

he starting point of this study is the urban context formed during the end of nineteenth century and the beginning of twentieth century, and the qualities that context produced. In this manner, the rich postcard and photocard collection of Ali Murat Merzeci allowed us to present those qualities. And by means of this collection it became possible to perceive the area so-called “Mersin Historic City Centre” as a whole.

ntil today, certainly, many significant and valuable studies were carried out. That differentiates this study from the previous ones is the use of written and visual material in an integrated way and the focus to an area in Mersin as it is set up in the book. In this sense, another fact the study presents by itself is the excursion route within “Mersin Historic City Centre”, which is the centre of urban history and commercial history of the city. The course that is starting with the Railway Station on the east, and proceeds until the Lighthouse on the west is visualized through a poster in the study facilitated the reader to perceive the area as a unity and to stroll through the area by means of postcards and photocards.

n this framework, this study on the one hand reveals the integrity of the city of Mersin from her foundation until the mid-twentieth century; on the other hand it built up the first attempts to actualize a city walk in the near future. In this respect, the study gives clues about new works to be designed as its progression as well.

ersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry, undertook the publishing of the study, promoted a brand new breathe within the socio-cultural life of the city, at the same time, made a start on a new series of studies, beginning with this book. In this way, after this book, which is the beginning of series called “Mersin Culture Books Series”, new studies that will be integrated to the series must be brought into forth to the concern of ones who are interested in urban history and related researchers and also to the concern of general public. Besides these studies, in a different sphere, new studies that will put forward the visions and strategies about “Mersin Historic City Centre” and its future, to revitalize the region as a whole as revealed in the book; that bring into relief the historic identity of Mersin should be supported to be brought into the agenda of the city.
