OUT AND ABOUT

Dear Readers Welcome Issue 71

So where is the sun? Mid April and the weather here in the Costa Blanca has actually not been a lot different than that in the UK and in some cases much worse, so how unfair is that? The most recent UK forecast is even better with temperatures this week up to 25 degrees, so if you fancy a few days shopping and seeing your friends and family back home, now seems a good time to go.

After seeing the beaches at their best for Easter it's been a complete let down ever since. With the hoodies and woolies back on for the time being, we hope to see ourselves a little closer to the summer season soon.

Nevertheless, to come home in the evening and actually see some daylight hours makes such a difference and a feeling of well being. I hope the BBQ will be back in use for that perfect evening meal outside on the terrace - the ideal way to unwind and finish the day.

In the meantime, a gentle reminder to register your vote in the UK general election. You can read more about how and why your vote is so important and can actually help you. See page 4 for our full coverage on the registration process and more about the recent pre election campaign.

I hope you enjoy our weekly read with extra pages that include "Property Plus," 8 pages dedicated to buying, selling and renting in the Costa Blanca. Ther are also puzzles, TV choice plus five pages dedicated to international sports with the latest news and reviews together with the weekends top fixtures and events.

My aim is to keep adding more local news and provide you, the reader, with more information of what's on, events and lifestyle subjects that makes your living in Spain more interesting and enjoyable. Our recent expansion into more areas across the North Costa Blanca is part of our ongoing plan to reach more and more British Ex-Pats and be the best and most read local newspaper.

Happy reading!

opposition to Trident, its determination to increase spending North of the Boarder, and see another referendum on independence is a worry. They are also pledged to abandon the nuclear deterrent – again a worry at a time of increased tensions with Russia and the Middle East.

The main political parties are yet to launch their formal manifestos, but we have a fair idea of what each of the main parties has offer:

The Conservatives, led by David Cameron, claim the economic recovery is their legacy and we should not endanger it by changing direction now. It is certainly true that the UK has had the strongest recovery in the EU, but then, it also had one of the hardest recessions. Only now, 5 years on are wages outstripping inflation. He is also offering, changes to inheritance tax to ensure that property can be passed down the generations, the renewal of the nuclear defence, and ring fenced spending for the NHS. The Tories have also announced the right for Housing Association tenants to buy their homes, in a echo of the 'right to buy' council house policy of the 1980s. The Tories also offer a referendum on a renegotiated EU membership in 2017

Labour say that austerity has hit the poorest hardest and are pledged to end zero hours contracts, and rebalance employment in favour of the workers. They say there is too much privatisation of the NHS and that tuition fees for Universities are too high. Essentially they want to spend a little more and tax a little more, though there are concerns about borrowing levels indicated by their policies. One of the main cash-cows is promised to be a Mansion Tax, potentially affecting London and the

vistacostablanca.com

Sough East most of all.

The Liberal Democrats have undoubtedly been tarnished by their spell in government. Their main claims are to look at raising the level of tax allowance to take people out of the tax system and to keep the UK in the European Union. Many think of them as the Tories 'light' perhaps moderating the more extreme end of the Cameron Conservatives

But now of course we have UKIP, SNP, Plaid Cymru and the Greens.

UKIPs pledge is to get the UK out of the EU – if they are successful, would that mean all the expats in the EU would have to return home? Probably not, but it would certainly make the free movement of people, goods and services much more difficult. And their immigration policies look unachievable without some fairly drastic policies that Enoch Powell might not have blushed at.

SNP is of course a Scottish party, but could hold the balance of power in a Miliband/Labour Government. So its

The Greens, as a further left version of Labour, in addition toothe environmental policies, they are a higher tax/higher spend party looking to achieve a fairer society through more redistribution of wealth.

Plaid Cymru are the welsh nationalists and again a left wing party, who may form an alliance with other nationalists in order to support a Labour led Government.

So the outcome looks uncertain. Mr Cameron may win the most votes, but may not have the most seats. It is unlikely that any party will have an overall majority, so a political 'horsetrade' seems likely.

My guess is to think carefully before you vote and consider the outcome you actually want to achieve. For once itgenuinely hangs in the balance

Voting day is Thursday 7th May 2015 - A full list of candidates standing in each constituency is available on the web from the local council, or the Electoral Commission.

HOME OFFICE ENDS TEMPORARY PASSPORTS

THE British Home Office has ended the temporary passport extension which was introduced last year to ease a huge backlog of applications from expats. Brits who are living abroad will now need to apply online for their passports or at local offices as usual from the 10th April 2015.

Last year’s contingency measures were used to cope with exceptional demand, a 12-month passport extension stamp for British citizens

overseas helping more than 20,000 UK nationals.

Demand for passports is expected to return to normal levels and Her Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO) will be contacting all citizens with a passport extension at least two months before it expires. This is to encourage British passports to be renewed in good time.

Immigration and Security Minister James Brokenshire said: “Overseas

turnaround times have improved significantly and are now well within service standards. But we still need to encourage all overseas passport holders to apply in good time to avoid disruption to their travel plans.”

The HMPO has stated that it will provide a seven-day service to customers in the UK with an extension stamp if they submit all the correct documentation within six weeks of their passports expiring.

ONLY DAYS LEFT TO REGISTER YOUR VOTE 4

vistacostablanca.com

Your Vote Counts and with only a few days before the deadline for ex-pats to register for thief right to vote in the UK general election 2015 on the 7th May.

British ex-pats living here in Spain have recently made their voices heard taking every opportunity to ask the British Consulate why the process of voting cannot be made more simple by allowing an electronic voting system. Bringing the current system up to date via an electronic voting system would see many more ex-pats taking their opportunity to vote.

The current style of registering to vote has been in place over 100 years. The current rule is that only for a period

of 15 years can British ex-pats claim their right to vote and there is a huge call for this rule should to be abolished, thereby allowing ex-pats in Spain who have been in residence for over 15 years to vote on issues that affect them.

For those people that have lived abroad for less than 15 years and have the right to vote then the call from all parties is that you should you it. Every vote counts and it could be you that is effected by the legislations and changes that effect British Ex-Pats especially the policy on taxation for people living abroad. It is important for any UK citizen overseas that wishes to register for a postal vote to do so as quickly as possible so that they can receive and return their postal ballot packs in good time before polling day.

Estimates show that there could be as many as 5.5 million UK citizens living overseas. Not all will be eligible to register as overseas voters but the most recent figures showed that there were only 15,849 overseas voters on the UK electoral registers. Since the introduction of the new

April 15th – April 21st 2015

online registration portal in June 2014, tens of thousands of UK citizens from all around the world have logged on to use the system. In comparison, ahead of last year's European Parliamentary elections 7,079 overseas voter registration forms were downloaded, using the previous paper application form.

UK citizens who have previously been registered to vote in a UK Parliamentary constituency in the last fifteen years may be eligible to register as an overseas elector. Overseas voters can choose to vote either by post or by proxy (where a trusted person is nominated to vote on behalf of another).

Alex Robertson, Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, said:

"There is now just a matter of days left until the 20 April deadline, so we're encouraging UK expats to join the many others who have already registered to vote online. It takes just a few minutes at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and is far easier than the old, paper based process.

There's been a great response so far and we don't want anyone to miss out on having their say on polling day."

THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IS MIDNIGHT ON MONDAY 20 APRIL.

LORD OF THE RINGS EXHIBITION

THe Lord of the Rings trilogy will be recreated inside Alicante's Santa Bårbara castle for the next year – visitors can enter Gollum's cave, sit at the desk in Bilbo's office, view lifesized characters, costumes and other Middle Earth memorabilia, and have their photo taken with their favourite fantasy heroes.

The exhibition, The Fortress of the Ring, kicked off on 27th March and will run for a whole year.

The exibition features 700 pieces of memorabilia related to the two epic novels, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, (which was later split into 3 different boks and blockbuster movies) Five rooms in the castle will be taken over entirely by the exhibition, and another – the Taberna Hall – will be dedicated to the life and times of John Ronald Reuen Tolkien.

A further two rooms will be filled with collector's items loaned to Alicante castle by fans of the British author's works. To add some authentic atmosphere to Alicante's Middle Earth, the Celtic rock band Innerlands will perform there live in the summer, having allowed the exhibition organisers to use their music to play as a backing track to the display.

GAMBLING LAW TO SPAIN’S BRITISH PROTECT MINORS POPULATION BOOMS April 15th – April 21st 2015

New legislation protecting minors from gambling will make an exception for the children from San I l d e f o n s o School, who are famous for singing out the winning numbers of the Christmas lottery known as El Gordo (The Fat One).

The draft of the royal decree on gambling activities has an addendum that reads:

vistacostablanca.com

“The participation of the children of San Ildefonso in the Christmas Lottery draw, which they have traditionally participated in, and in the El Niño draw, will not be considered incompatible with the principle of protection of minors.” El Nino (The Child) lottery is held each Feast of the Epiphany, on January 6.

EL GORDO WORLD’S BIGGEST LOTTERY

El Gordo is the world’s biggest lottery and handed out a total of €2.24 billion in prize money in 2014. The above article addresses the need to protect minors from gambling, and prohibits any kind of advertising that encourages children and youths to place bets, either directly or with help from third parties. Children’s voices or likenesses may not be used in gambling advertising or activities either.

In spite of recent reports claiming British expat number s in Spain are falling, the stats tell another story.

Spain’s immigration observatory took a closer look into its five million foreign residents at the end of 2014 and concluded that Brits here are actually growing in number. Foreigners make up 10% of

5

Spain’s population, and although the country lost 183,500 foreigners in the crisis, Romanians, Moroccans and the British are currently leading the pack in becoming residents. With 276,000 British national residents, the expat community is growing fast with an increase of 3.87% on 2013, surpassed only by the relatively small Italian community which grew by 6%.

But the executive is making an exception for the children of San Ildefonso because of “their deep-rooted tradition” of singing out the Christmas lottery tickets.

Students at this school, which was originally for orphans, have been singing out the lottery tickets since 1812 in a traditional ceremony that remains mostly unchanged since then. Winners are expected to donate a small portion of their prize money to the child who sang out their number.

9,226 EASTER LIGHTHOUSE VISITS April 15th – April 21st 2015

vistacostablanca.com

NEWS

During the Easter holidays the ‘Faro del Albir’ (Albir lighthouse) registered 9,226 visitors, a record number during opening hours (from 10AM to 6PM). Since it was converted into a Cultural Centre it is the most visited watchtower on the Costa Blanca area, with 2,000 visitors per day.

It is one of the main attractions of the promotional campaign ‘We love Sundays Albir’ along with the ‘Villa Romana’ Museum and the ‘Fundacion Frax’ and it has been key to placing Albir as a reference for family tourism every weekend. The Albir lighthouse gives visitors a journey through history to meet pirates, soldiers, miners, fishers, sailors and other people whose lives were linked to it.

Visitors can also enjoy some fossil dunes formed over 100,000 years ago, watch unique fishes and birds and, if they are lucky, they may see a family of bottlenose dolphins performing impressive jumps in the sea. The Albir lighthouse was the first cultural lighthouse in the Valencian Region when it reopened in October 2011. It is a remarkable historic treasure built in 1863, which illuminates the northern area of the ‘Sierra Helada’ mountains and it has been shining ever since, as it was even working during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

SECURITY FAILURES TRAM FROM DENIA TO BENIDORM By Fred Archer

The Railway Union ‘SF-Intersindical’ has denounced serious security failures to the Work Inspection in Alicante and the public company in charge of the trains, the ‘Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat Valenciana’ (FGV). The union has sent a report which informs them of the terrible state of the ‘sleepers’ on the Line 9 (Denia to Benidorm) in several locations. The role of the sleepers is to ensure the trains stability during the journey.

The union report stated: “We have detected numerous rotten sleepers, even broken, out of their position, with loose screws due to the bad condition of the wood. This is a dangerous situation which extends between Denia, La Xara, Gata de Gorgos, Teulada, Benissa, Calpe, Altea, even in bridges and tunnels”.

According to the report, this situation can been seen by residents and visitors walking through the Joan Fuster Avenue (Denia), the Golf Field ‘La Sella’ surrounding areas and at the train stations of La Olla (Altea) and

The consequences could be serious: “Travellers can suffer discomfort inside the trains; the trains will suffer damage to the engine, gearbox, suspension and other parts; the high increase of derailment risk; and the risk for the workers on board who are working without the security requirements. Politicians promise to work on the DeniaGandia section, but the rail lines are not being improved and reducing the speed in certain areas will only increase the travel time while the real problems are never fixed”.

With these words, the union demanded the “immediate repair of the infrastructure and trains guaranteeing the total security of our rail transport, the quality of the public services and ensuring the correct investments in this infrastructure by the Valencian Region Government”.

One of the sleepers in terrible condition at the Golf Field ‘La Sella’ surrounding area

Benidorm. Even though these two train stations have been improved recently at great cost, they still found old and broken sleepers, which could cause the rail to bend. It is not only the sleepers, but also the nails and flanges that are in poor condition.

The Fundacion Frax defines it as “a very delicate work, full of spirituality, musicality and rhythm which induce to the meditation. It is a golden shiny work, poetry in its trace but a silent poetry which drives you into introspection”.

Gita Blanchet was born in Reims, France, where she studied at the School of Fine Arts. She also studied at the University of Art and Design in Cologne (Germany). She lives and works in the south of France.

The exhibit can be visited at the Fundacion Frax located at the Paseo de las Estrellas, 3 in Albir, Monday to Friday from 9AM to 3PM. Entrance is free. For more info please call 96 686 40 40.

Father Peter, our Senior Chaplain took his final Easter Sunday Service. We were pleased to welcome visitors, new members plus the regular congregation making a total of 39, which was excellent. The hymn singing was rousing too.

After the service Elaine Mitchell made a presentation to Fr. Peter on behalf of the Albir congregation. He received a watercolour of the Last Supper, the full libretto of The Dream of Gerontius (which was close to his heart) and a little fun box containing eight items as a “Retirement Survival Kit”. A Simnel cake and a card signed by everyone.

2015 ELECTION INTERVIEW WITH MAITE HUERTA

PARTIDO POPULAR (CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR) Tell us about yourself?

I was born in the province of Valencia, graduated as a Laboratory Technician, worked for large Valencian Enterprise Company in the Administration Department in their Head Office. I worked until my children were born; dedicating all my time to them for a few good years. During the last 4 years I had the very important job to control the work of the government of Alfaz, as leader of the opposition.

I now dedicate all my time to elaborate projects for the future of this town.

Describe your work in the opposition in the last 4 years?

My priority has been to denounce everything the present government has done against the law. I believe that the law is for everyone. Friends of the local rulers should also follow the laws.

I´m also against the increase of taxes. This Council has spent too much money on councillors and advisors, some who have never come to this town and get a good salary paid by the Alfaz taxpayer. This Council now spends more money on politicians and advisors than on employment policies.

In summary, my work in the last four years has been based in controlling and denouncing all the illegalities the local government ruled by the PSOE did. I denounce it in the Courts of Justice when necessary. I also inform Alfaz´s citizens of what was happening in the local media.

What do the citizens request when they meet or speak with you? The first thing most people cry for is work. Some families

are by now desperate, the unemployment rate in this area is very high. They also ask me to lower the taxes. These two very important issues are my first priority. If I win the election in May, I will ask the auditors to inform us about the state of the finances in the Council, and lower the taxes as soon as I can. People have less income now than they had a few years ago. At the moment Alfaz/Albir citizens get two tax invoices (instead of one) in order to disguise the taxes they pay, just in case people don´t notice. This happens with the rubbish collection invoice for example. We will also revise all the privatised services that are a good business for some friends of the politicians in power. A lot of people ask me to improve the infrastructure in the urbanizations.

Citizens demand from politicians that we truly work for them and not be their landlords. Some politicians who are now in power in this town have been involved in politics for 36 years. Citizens request clean parks and green zones. Green paths through the countryside, clean streets and clean squares. They ask me to improve the flow of traffic and more spaces to park their cars.

People ask me for fresh air, new people with other principles, responsibility, austerity like it is the case in most households at the moment, common sense and clear objectives. Many families ask me for better social services for those in need. Something that they consider has not been attended properly in the last few years. People ask me to set the basis to create employment in this town.

Do you have any Project for Albir?

Albir is the jewel of Alfaz. Since ancient times people choose this area because of the fertile land and the exceptional climate.

When tourists from Northern Europe started to come to the Mediterranean, the whole coast became popular. Hotel Residence Banco de Bilbao Vizcaya was built for Bank employees, offering work to some people from Alfaz. This was our first contact with the tourism world. That was in the 1950s.

If we win the elections we will improve the avenues, streets and urbanizations, especially those who do not have a sewage system, side walks or proper lights. Albir will have a special plan for street cleaning. My priorities will be: Employment, Education, Pensioners, Parks and green areas, Health Centre with 24 hours attention. Improving the access road Albir/Alfaz that has not been touched in 30 years. Connect the urbanizations with the town. We want to be proud of our town.

FIRE AT THE ALGAR RIVER By Fred Archer

A fire started at noon on Monday at the mouth of the Algar River in Altea. Visitors and residents were surprised to see black smoke just under the N-332 road bridge.

The fire affected a small area of bushes and shrubs, but firefighters brought the flames under control, with no personal injury and little damage to the ecosystem. According to municipal sources, camper vans usually park in that area even though it is forbidden. They do not know the cause of te fire, but it could be due to negligence.

Several residents and onlookers went to check the source of the black smoke, but officers sealed off the area in order to prevent them from approaching the flames.

TWO PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR DISTRIBUTING PEDOPHILE DOCUMENTS By Fred Archer

The Guardia Civil has arrested 17 people across Spain for swapping and distributing images and videos with paedophile content through the internet. This investigation took place in 15 different Spanish provinces and the Guardia Civil seized over 20,000 files found on computer storage media. Two of the arrested people lived in La Nucia and in El Campello. The detainees are accused of a crime of minors’ corruption.

This operation, called ‘Canterbury’, started in June last year when a resident of Navarra showed the Guardia Civil a video with paedophile images. The officers found that the involved people were sharing videos and images through P2P networks and the members of the organization were encrypting the files, protecting them with passwords, saving them in the cloud, activating hidden files and other techniques. The seized files take up over 20 Terabytes in images and videos.

The operation started when the officers were made aware of illegal gambling in several stores in Benidorm.

They found out that the three places worked together in an organized structure. One of the establishments was exclusively dedicated to gambling and the other two were bars, where gamblers went to watch and bet on sporting events which were shown on big TV screens.

The police seized electronic betting systems, sheets with gambling details (headquarters, sched-

Benidorm Town Hall will start an improvement plan to upgrade student safety in nine school playgrounds. They are going to invest €220,000 from the 2015 budget.

The schools in question are: CEIP Aitana, Ausias March, Gabriel Miro, La Cala, Leonor

Canalejas, Mestre Gaspar Lopez, Miguel Hernandez, Serra Gelada and Vasco Nuñez de Balboa.

Two schools, Els Tolls and Puig Campana, did not request any improvements because they considered that their facilities were already equipped.

El Murtal school demanded the improvement works, but the Town Hall explained that in this case they would need concreting instead of asphalting, so they would have to wait for the next works. The school at Bautista Lledo will also have to wait because they are going to improve its plumbing instalations this summer. By Russell Ash

Elvis Festival 2015 April 15th – April 21st 2015

vistacostablanca.com

Benidorm will host the 5th Elvis Festival this weekend, starting on Friday 17th until Sunday 19th. The main event hosting 12 of Europe’s leading Elvis Tribute Artists, boasts being the “biggest ever Elvis show staged in Europe” is the finale to the festival being held at the famous Benidorm Palace for the very first time.

With over 14 hours of live music each day of the event including themed shows described as “Elvis at the movies” and the “Elvis gospel show”. The main venue for the daily events are held at the Melia Hotel which offers poolside stages, private themed bars and the “Vegas style” floor show. After parties are held nightly at the famous local venue “The Rock and Roll House”, conveniently situated opposite the Hotel Melia in the Rincon area of Benidorm.

At the time of writing this article, tickets for the Benidorm Palace Elvis show are still available, but the reports are that the event is likely to be sold out very soon. For availability please call 965 851 660. The Weekly Buzz has been following the Elvis festival (seeing its growth over recent years) and has also taken an interest in the individual acts that are bringing thousands of visitors to Benidorm each year.

The original festival started in 2004 in Porthcawl, South Wales and has grown into the largest Elvis Festival in the world, attracting over 30,000 people and injecting over £6 million into the local economy.

Peter Phillips, founder of the original festival explained "It was five years ago that myself and Harriet Raybould, who is a well-known backing and session singer in the Elvis industry, felt there was an opportunity to establish an Elvis Fiesta in Benidorm".

Seeing the event grow each year I asked Peter what can we expect for this event to continue to be the biggest and best outside of the UK? Peter replied "Up until now we have made the event very exclusive, centred around the Melia Hotel

I said to the owners ‘if you like me then great’ and since then I have never looked back. Its all been actually plain sailing. “They gave me a chance and I took it”.

I said you are recognised all over the town and have many many fans that visit from all over Europe, how do you take that? Simon said “I really do love it here. I have some great friends and love my fans. The people who I meet here are having fun and enjoying themselves, that's what Benidorm is all about.

along with the Rock ‘n Roll and Show Boat bars. The event has sold out since its second year, becoming the largest Elvis festival in mainland Europe. To celebrate our 5th Anniversary we are staging the Sunday night finale in the Benidorm Palace and making 500 tickets available."

Benidorm is proud to have its very own Elvis tribute King, Simon Patrick, who is the resident top of the bill act at "The Rock and Roll House".

In a recent exclusive interview with Simon, he told me how he arrived in Benidorm after making a decision to perform abroad. “So I said to my mum, ‘I’m going to give it a go abroad’ and decided it was going to be Benidorm. I put a little

money in my pocket and had my backing tracks and costume with me... I had nowhere to live, so I asked around and did a bit of homework.

“Working for the owners here could not be better. They are my friends and we understand each other. I respect them we have a great understanding. I don't ever let them down, and the are the same with me. "I go back home every third week, for a week, to make sure my mum’s ok, have a little rest, keep my freshness then come back feeling great”.

We talked about the 5th Elvis Fiesta in Benidorm. The event that started in Wales with just 200 people, now attracts thousands. Benidorm is being put on the map as being extremely popular, and will continue to grow.

“I am headlining again here in Benidorm, and its just getting bigger and better each year.”

Simon was the winner of the Elvis European Competition in 2010 and went to the world finals in Memphis coming sixth place.

You can see Simon Patrick performing live at the Rock and Roll House, together with many other great Rock and Roll acts.

CRAFT FAIR UNTIL END OF MAY

and bags, or their own designs in jewelry.

Every stall offers something different, all original items that you won't find anywhere else. The stallholders are happy to explain how everything is made and also accept special orders.

From now on, till the end of May, between 10 and 15 craftsmen and women will set up stalls every Saturday morning (10am till 2 pm) in the square in front of the Post Office near the old Town Centre (Plaza Marina Alta), to sell pottery and ceramics, lamps made of recycled wood or twisted wire, paintings, wooden toys or hand painted T-shirts

JAVEA GREEN BOWLS EASTER TRIPLES

Spring is here and that can mean only one thing... the ‘Solar in Spain’ sponsored Javea Easter Trips, the much anticipated three fun filled days of competitive bowling mixed with a touch of humour.

28 teams were divided into 4 groups and the winner of each group went through to the semi final. Each group played five 10 end games over 3 days with no trial ends and all shots counting, daunting even for the most experienced bowler.

Organised by Judy and Alan Travers, the competition ran like clockwork and each day bowlers arrived to find treats had been left

on their table. The first day it was easter eggs, the second day hot cross buns and the third day fruity chews. Each one was enjoyed and much appreciated by all who indulged.

The teams of Matt Taylor, Yvonne and Dave Carvath and Velia Wood, Chris Evans and Clive English both won their respective groups, but were beaten in the semi finals.

presented by Solar in Spain´s representatives Fidelma Matthews, Vincent Burke and son Alex.

An extra prize was awarded to a team of Javea´s ´newby´ bowlers, Celeste Campbell, Kirstie Stewart and Chris Blackstone as most promising newcomers to the game. After the competition was over, tasty tapas were supplied by Jan Bigsby courtesy of Solar in Spain.

The two finalist teams were Jean McLaughlin with Jim and Sheri Fletcher and Jackie and Dave Roberts with Tim Woodcock, the latter team winning to lift the cup, which was

HOW CAN YOU FINANCE A PROPERTY IN SPAIN?

THERE ARE a variety of ways that you can pay for a property in Spain. Aside from paying cash, you can fund a property through a variety of loan options. Which option you choose is something you should consider before you start to look for a property or select an estate agent to assist you in your purchase. Also, it is wise to consider your finances and have any mortgage you may have applied for ready in principle. You may consider either a UK mortgage or search for one from a Spanish mortgage broker. In Spain, your options for home loans, particularly as a non-resident owner, are unlikely to be as extensive as those on offer if buying in the UK, or wherever your native country is. Spanish banks have been hit harder by the financial crisis of recent years than banks in the UK other parts of the world, and as a result lending conditions have become more stringent, although interest rates remain low. Mortgage offers change on a daily basis, so it's best to contact an overseas mortgage broker to determine what the current mortgage offers are. You'll want to get an idea

as to how much cash – your deposit – is needed in relation to the mortgage amount. These days, Spanish lenders will typically ask for a deposit of at least 40 per cent from non-Spanish nationals – some requiring 30 per cent are available with tighter conditions. When applying for your mortgage you will need to provide proof of income and identity, and details of your bank account and credit cards. Make sure you fully understand interest rates, loan terms and the typical criteria used to determine loan-tovalue amounts. If you decide to buy a repossessed property, either a new-build that a developer defaulted on or a property formerly owned privately, you are likely to be offered very attractive finance options by the bank selling it. Remember, you won't be able to transfer the bank's finance terms to another property not owned by that bank. Buying a bank repossession this way will suit some buyers, typically investors, but be

careful you are fully aware of the terms of the finance and be certain you will be able to keep up repayments. Of course, your monthly mortgage repayment is another important figure to consider when looking at the cost of maintaining your property. Choosing the wrong mortgage could lead to difficulties and it's very important not to stretch yourself financially. If you'd like to be put in touch with a recommended overseas mortgage broker

EFFICIENT HOME AIR-CON - IT'S A GAS! You may have noticed just how hot it's getting. There's no denying that with air-conditioning at home, life is simply more comfortable. After a while, it's easy to take air-con for granted. But, air-con systems will and do need maintaining in order to function correctly and reliably. The main cause of failure of air-con systems is due to 'gassing' of the system. This can be due to leakage or even just oldage. We can re-gas or repair as needed. Recently, it's come to our attention that the gas used in air-con systems is changing. The current gas (R22) has been used reliably for over 40 years but is no longer available. The replacement gasses (R417a and R422d) are more ozone friendly and can be used instead without having to change compressor oils and filters. Some companies use a cheaper R407c gas but we get regular reports of damaged compressors, so we don't use it! The R22 machines parts are obsolete now, so it's now better to replace the machines. At MPH, we believe strongly in keeping up with the changes, and doing our bit for the environment. We are already using the new R417c gas and can advise in all matters of regassing. This leads on nicely to know when to re-gas your system. The most obvious symptom is that your room is still not cool with the air-con on. It's a little cooler, but not as cool as you remember. This is possibly due to lack of gas pressure in the system - time for a re-gas. Another one is that you notice an odd smell which you can't put your finger on! It may be the air-con! The thing here is that the air-con unit blows air, and the smell, all round the room making it difficult to locate. In this case, maybe a small leak is the culprit! The real killer is when the air-con unit simply won't work. The internal sensor sees there's little or no gas, and won't allow the system to switch on. A simple re-gas could be the solution. So, if you've got air-con, and you want to stay cool this summer, and save money, it's really worth calling Moraira Plumbing and Heating (see ad for details). Their experts will give you straight, honest advice and get back on track with the minimum of fuss. If you prefer to meet in person, call into their showroom on the Moraira Calpe coast road, a km or so outside Moraira.

JOHNNY VEGAS AT BISTRO AMICS ALBIR

Meeting up with Johnny at Bistro Amics in Albir is always a pleasure. A tranquil terrace setting that seems to always be sunny. Even on cloudy days you can normally get the best of the weather here. Johnny Vegas certainly enjoys the sunshine whilst relaxing during his recent weeks of filming the hit TV series “Benidorm”. So I asked him how's the filming going? “Yeah it's going really well and it's going on for the next few months”.

Are you here for the whole time or do you go back to the UK? “Yeah I am here the whole time, I’ve got a couple of weeks back home coming up. “It's only because we're shooting out and about and not around the pool ,so I'm getting called in when they need me. As soon as this weeks out, I will have a bit of time off.” So what do you do apart

from coming to Amics restaurant? “I like a bit of a quiet life now... I stay out in Albir, I've done the madness of Benidorm and I enjoy it a bit, more out of the way.” Joking around as usual, Johnny said “I rise to Altea with Cesar Salads and Fizzy Water”.

weather being a bit up and down as well as bits of the lurgi going around. Some of the others have lost their voice”.

Well we hope those who are under the weather get well soon and get back to the filming and we all look forward to seeing the next On a final note, Johnny said "The next ones on me.” I will be back that was lovely, genuinely"

So you've moved up in the world Johnny? “Well Albir and Altea I know is my place, but I might slip out for a few tonight down the front. With the family back home, I take it easy now. They came out last w e e k . There's always time to fill especially with the

CRYPTIC CROSSWORD

wE33 WEEKLY HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Although you’re working to an agenda in your career and have got everything worked out to the last minute just about, cut yourself some slack at the weekend and take time out to chill with family and loved ones. You know what they say about jack being a dull boy?

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

You find it hard at times to get along with certain people in your work circle or social circle, and you get annoyed with yourself more because you allow them to get under your skin. Try not to react. They’re deliberately pushing your buttons. Don’t buy into it. GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

You’ve got through a stressful few weeks, maybe even months, and now it seems everyone is forming a queue to help you. In many cases you’d be better doing things yourself, but the thought was there so give them kudos for that. Be tactful as you accept a helping hand.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

The day to day routine run of the mill stuff that has to be done, keeps you on the move this week. As long as you don’t allow stress to creep into the equation, you’ll get loads done. Financial issues could turn out to rather complicated, but just stay calm and ask questions.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

It’s only by using your ingenuity to tackle problems that you’ll manage to convince others that what you’re saying is true. You’ll do whatever it takes to be successful, but question your integrity every step of the way. Co-operation is your key word. Use it well.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

Achieving a balance between work and play has always been a bone of contention for you as you’re an all or nothing kind of star sign, but this week you’ll really need to keep both worlds apart if you want to achieve any modicum of success in either zone. Focus.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

Make sure you keep the channels of communication open and receiving, and you may hear something that helps you make an important decision. Put in some extra effort at home, and it wont be just children that will appreciate it. Partners love it too. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

You’ll get your most rewarding moment when the teamwork you’ve applied to projects pushes things through to a successful conclusion. That old two heads are better than one thing really works, whether its two or a hundred and two. Good for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

Tread carefully when it comes to money matters this week, as your normal approach, jumping in at the deep end with both feet, has to be tempered with caution and reality. Rushing in where angels fear to tread may be fine socially, but not over work or money matters. CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

Travel is what inspires you, lifts your mind and warms your soul, so try to work out when you can get away and how long for, and you’ll find that everything else just falls into place. You love the anticipation and excitement the unknown brings. Get it booked.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

The lunar high brings new incentives to your door, and although you’re still tying up loose ends over problems from the past, you can still manage to fit something new and exciting into your agenda. Reassess personal goals and maybe approach them from a different angle. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

If you pour all your energy into your job bosses and superiors will notice your progress, and that in turn may see you being given more responsibility, being promoted or given a rise. Nice work if you can get it! Mars makes you decisive and strong but can also make you touchy.

MORAIRA

Few people forget their visit to Moraira, and fewer still do not return on holiday here year after year, having discovered the jewel in the Costa Blanca's crown.

not sold-out to the tourist boom and isn't plagued by the high rise buildings and overcrowding of other resorts.

cream or browse the stalls of the interesting street market nearby.

Moraira's two main beaches are made up of clean golden sand and nestled in attractive bays, swimming here is safe and pleasant and the beach is a relatively uncrowded place to be even in the peak of summer and cleaned daily. Moraira's main beach is situated right next to the town centre with convenient pedestrian walkways and a park area meaning that it is not necessary to cross any roads to get to the town or the marina from the beach

Moraira offers a huge variety of restaurants and bars to cater for every taste and budget. Whether you are looking for typical Spanish cuisine in Spanish surroundings or international cuisine like Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Italian or even just egg

Intertwined with Moraira's restaurants and bars are many interesting shops that stay open late into the evening. These range from the usual tourist fayre, to designer clothing, art galleries, spanish leather goods and fresh produce that can be found in the local bakers, butchers and fish mongers.

The Friday market held opposite the town centre is an excellent opportunity to purchase all manner of fresh produce as well as imitation leather goods, clothing and jewellery. For the adventurous a fresh fish market at which all are welcome is held in the town's marina every morning except Sunday.

Just walking around Moraira is a rewarding pursuit in itself - the central market square has many places to sit down and eat or drink, the streets are a mix of quaint cobbled narrow alleys and modern avenues lined with palm trees and fountains and there are many quiet places to sit and watch the world go by or to watch the sea and stunning vista along the coastline to Calpe.

Moraira is geographically situated in a perfect location, around Moraira itself the landscape changes from the desert like flatness of Alicante to become greener and more undulating as you head North. It is an ideal location to easily visit other

NEW MINI COUNTRYMAN SPOTTED TESTING AT NURBURGRING T h e L a t e s t B U Z Z f r o m t h e M o t o r i n g Wo r l d

was based on the same platform as the original Mini Clubman, itself a stretched version of the threedoor hatch.

The second-generation Mini Countryman has been spotted testing again before it goes on sale in 2016.

The new Countryman will get the same range of petrol and diesel three-cylinder and four-cylinder engines as the Minis already launched. It will also hugely benefit from the UKL platform’s new allwheel drive system, which has just been offered on the 2 Series Active Tourer and will be used by the new BMW X1 later this year.

The latest set of spy photos show the new Countryman doing some hot-lap testing at the Nürburgring in Germany. It has previously been seen on urban roads and in coldweather conditions.

These pictures show the slight extra length of the new Countryman, which is based on a larger platform than the outgoing version.

Like this year’s Clubman estate car, the new Countryman is based on a much bigger platform than the threedoor and five-door hatchback Mini models.

The larger version of BMW’s frontwheel drive UKL platform is used to underpin the new Countryman, giving the Mini a similar footprint to the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.

It is wider and only marginally longer than today’s Countryman (the increase in overall length being kept in check by a very short rear overhang). It is expected to also be slightly taller. Interior space will be

improved and the load bay is said to be usefully bigger on this new model, as the increased length of the third side window seems to show.

This may be a ground-up new model, but BMW’s stylists have stuck quite closely to the design theme of the original Countryman. However, unlike the new Clubman, which uses a bonnet design

and headlight shape directly influenced by the Mini Rocketman concept, the Countryman features similar graphic shapes to those of the existing Mini hatchbacks.

Sources say the Countryman’s overall styling is much more harmonious and better resolved than that of the original, which suffered proportionally because it

It offers surprising agility and capability off road, even for vehicles without long-travel suspension and raised chassis ride height. This raises the possibility of a high-performance Countryman variant, possibly inspired by the iconic Mini rally cars that won the Monte Carlo Rally three times in the 1960s.

It’s thought that the Countryman will be built at BMW’s Oxford facility, rather than at NedCar in the Netherlands, a factory that is under contract to BMW. NedCar, which has previously built Volvos, Mitsubishis and the Smart Forfour, has been building Mini hatchbacks since summer 2014.

I HAVE JUST COME OUT OF HOSPITAL AFTER A HEART ATTACK. WHAT NOW?! Things you SHOULD do

-Take your prescribed medication. Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol levels etc. is crucial in reducing the risk of heart attack. -Eat healthily. Luckily for us in Spain, a Mediterranean diet is considered perfect for helping prevent heart attacks and strokes. -Keep your weight within healthy limits.

-Make sure that you have your Flu and pneumonia vaccines.

Having a heart attack is a terrifying experience. You are rushed to your local urgencias department there is lots activity around you, tests are being carried out, Doctors and machines are everywhere. The chances are that you have no idea what is happening to you or what is being said if your Spanish is not up to scratch!

The resulting hospital stay may be no different and the next thing you know, you have been sent home with hundreds of tablets feeling totally bewildered and thinking what now??!

In an ideal world, you would be sent to a cardiac rehabilitation programme although it is unlikely that this would be accessible to you in Spain. Cardiac rehabilitation helps you to deal with your heart attack with emotional support, healthy lifestyle support, exercise programmes and education.

- Report any chest pain, swollen ankles, unusual tiredness or breathlessness to your Doctor.

- See your Doctor without delay if you or somebody close to you suspects that you may be depressed.

It´s not all tablets, Doctors and bad news. Other things you SHOULD/CAN do that may please or surprise you!

-Have sex. Yes this is correct! After a few weeks and if you are having no problems or chest pain, you can resume sexual activity. It is good for your health. Check with your Doctor first to ensure that you are fit for romance!

Although there is lots of general information for heart attack patients much of the advice needs to be tailored to the individual. Here however are some guidelines and answers to common questions.

Following a heart attack is important to take all the necessary steps to prevent future heart problems. This can be achieved in several ways. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE! A heart attack will not ruin your life but your anxiety regarding it may!

and sex all help to ward off depression which is common following a heart attack.

-Drink alcohol! SMALL amounts of alcohol have been shown to have a beneficial effect on the heart. However, remember the limit is 21 units per week for men and 14 units per week for women. Do not binge drink and don´t forget to give your body 2 days each week without alcohol. - Go back to work! Most people can go back to work within 2-3 months of a heart attack. Your Doctor should advise you when it is safe for you to do so.

Things you SHOULD NOT do.

-Smoke. If you smoke you should be aware that giving up HALVES your risk of having another heart attack.

-Strain yourself by lifting very heavy objects or indulge in sudden bursts of strenuous exercise or activity.

-Drive for the first month. Check with your Doctor when you are allowed to get behind the wheel again.

- Travel by air for the first 2-3 weeks. As with driving, this varies so get the all clear first. - Adopt a sedentary lifestyle, give up your hobbies etc. You should return gradually to your previous activities under guidance of your Doctor.

Due to lifestyle changes, many people become fitter and healthier than they have ever been after having a heart attack. Some start running marathons and have a whole new lease of life! However, we are all individuals and any advice given here is general.

-Dance, exercise and enjoy yourself! Exercise is one of the main components of cardiac rehabilitation for most patients. Under the guidance of your Doctor, slowly build up your personalised exercise routine. Exercise, dancing

HOW TO TRIM YOUR DOGS NAILS

Trimming your dog’s nails is a necessary chore and should be done every three or four weeks. You can do it yourself or have a groomer or vet clip your dog's nails for you. Most groomers will be happy to show you how it’s done and it might be a good idea to do this the first time around. If your dog absolutely detests the process and it turns into a huge struggle, my advice is to let the pros do it. This unhappy scenario can be avoided by getting your dog used to having his paws handled when he’s a pup. Reasons to Clip Dog Nails

Whether your little buddy knows it or not, he will be much better off if his nails are trimmed regularly and not allowed to become overgrown. The results are not pretty and can contribute to health concerns: • Dog nails that grow too long may curl around the paw and punture the footpad, causing pain and infection.

• They can also interfere with his normal gait, resulting in deformed feet that are splayed, nail breakage, bleeding

and general discomfort in the feet, legs and 1. With the pet on the grooming table, begin with the rear hips because he cannot walk properly paws. Face away from the dog and hold the paw. Use your body • Overgrown nails will cause him to rock weight to gently keep him in place. back on his paws, causing a strain on his joints and ligaments. 2. Lift the paw only as far as needed, being careful not to twist the Frequency leg and cause injury.

Ideally, nails should be short enough that they don’t click on the floor. For most dogs, the front nails will grow longer than the rear nails because dogs tend to "push off” from their rear, naturally wearing them down. Trimming or grinding the nails every two weeks should keep them adequately short, but if you are looking to recede the quick, doing it on a weekly basis would work best. Dog Nail Trimming Tools

3. "Tip” each nail, removing only the curved portion to avoid cutting the quick.

4. Trim off any additional length, still being careful to avoid the quick.

5. Moving to the front paws, stand by the dog’s front end and lift each one so that you are looking down on the upturned foot, similar to shoeing a horse.

6. "Tip” each nail and trim any excess. There are two types of nail trimmers you can use, the pliers type and the guillotine variety. I usually recommend 7. To keep those sharp newly-cut nails from scratching the pliers version because that is what I use in the salon. your legs, file them with a large emery board or nail file to If you would prefer to use a dremmel tool to grind your smooth them down. dog's nails, click here to learn more. 8. Praise your dog lavishly once the job is done and Cutting Your Dog's Nails reward him with a tasty treat! You can cut your dog’s nails anywhere, but for smaller dogs it’s easier to do the job with your dog on a grooming table rather than in your lap or on the floor. If you don’t have a grooming table, any table will do, but you will want to enlist the help of a friend or family member to help hold the dog. They can also help relax and calm the dog for the pedicure process.

Novak Djokovic started his clay court campaign with a comfortable win over Albert RamosVinolas at the Monte Carlo Masters. The world No 1 is targeting the elusive French Open title and began his warm-up for Roland Garros in the second round, completing a 6-1 64 victory. In a match that sometimes resembled a practice session, Djokovic never looked troubled by Ramos-Vinolas, although he dropped his serve once in the middle of the opening set

Djokovic's next big goal is to win the French Open, the only Grand Slam tournament missing from his already impressive collection. The Serb is off to his best start since 2011 and hopes he can carry his hardcourt form into the clay season, which will climax at Roland Garros, where Nadal has won a record nine times. But the Spaniard's current struggles might help Djokovic take him off his perch.

FLOWER WON'T SOFTEN STYLE

Ben Flower has insisted he will not soften his aggressive playing style ahead of his return to the field with Wigan Warriors.

The Welshman received a six-month ban - the longest in rugby league history - for his notorious act of brutality against St Helens' Lance Hohaia in last season's Grand Final. And although he insists the two savage punches - the second of which was delivered after his opponent was already unconscious - will never be repeated, Flower is not willing to compromise on his fighting qualities after his ban expires on Tuesday.

"Definitely not," Flower said. "If I take away my aggression, it will destroy my game. I'm

Rosberg finished second again and angrily accused his teammate of holding him back in the race. Hamilton's tire-conservation strategy ensured he could open up a sizeable lead over Vettel after the second pit stop, but

Rosberg said at a tense news conference afterward that Hamilton's measured pace allowed the Ferrari driver to stay close to him and caused his tires to wear by the end of the race. "It's just now interesting to hear from you, Lewis, that you were just thinking about yourself with the pace in front and unnecessarily that was compromising my race," he said. "It was unnecessarily close with Sebastian as a result and it cost me a lot of race time."

Hamilton responded by smiling and saying he didn't intentionally try to impede his teammate. "It's not my job to look after Nico's race. My job's to manage the car and bring the car home as healthy and as fast as possible and that's what I did," he said. "I just was focusing on myself. If Nico wanted to get by he could have tried, but he didn't."

A five-goal haul in the 91 win over Granada saw Cristiano Ronaldo join Real Madrid's 300 club alongside Raul and Alfredo Di Stefano.

Cristiano Ronaldo moved to 300 goals for Real Madrid as he scored five times in the 9-1 rout of Granada. The Ballon d'Or holder registered an eightminute hat trick before halftime - the quickest treble of his Real career and then added two more after the break at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo's fifth goal - an injury-time header - took

him to 300 goals for the club, making him the third player to achieve that feat after Real legends Raul and Alfredo Di Stefano. Former Spain skipper Raul scored 323 goals in 741 games for Real, while Di Stefano's tally stands at 308 from 396 outings. Ronaldo reached the 300 mark in an astounding 287 games, with 214 of those goals coming in La Liga. The Portugal captain has 60 to his name in the UEFA Champions League, as well as 21 in the Copa del Rey, three in the Supercopa de Espana and two in the European Super Cup.

After his stunning display on Sunday, Ronaldo tweeted: "Happy to have scored 5 goals with this excellent team work. Thank you for all your support." Ronaldo now sits eighth in La

LIONEL MESSI HAPPY AFTER TOUGH YEAR

April 15th – April 21st 2015

Liga's all-time scoring charts, having overtaken Pahino, who scored 211 times in 278 games for Real, Celta Vigo and Deportivo La Coruna in the 1940s and 50s.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi says he is much happier this season, having moved on from the injuries and belowpar form that hampered his previous campaign.

The 2014-15 has gone better so far, particularly since the turn of the year. Messi has already scored 45 times in 47 club appearances, and Barca are currently two points clear at the top of the Primera Division table, have booked their place in the Copa del Rey final and remain in contention for the Champions League.

The 27-year-old told his club's official website that he was feeling happier at the moment than he had been 12 months ago, when fitness issues and off-field problems had affected his form.

"Yes,

I

feel

happy," Messi said. "The truth is that I started the season in a different way after what happened to me last season. I had a tough year due to events off the field, injury and my form. But this season I started differently and now I feel good."

Messi suffered a string of muscle injuries through autumn 2013 and then travelled home to Argentina to properly rest and recover, but he said that, even afterwards, he had not felt at 100 percent.

"I was inconsistent last season," he said. "I was out for a while due to injury, missing quite a few games. When I came back I didn't feel right. It was a year that I have tried to quickly forget to try and get back to my best through hard work, smiling and effort, like I always have and now, fortunately, I feel very good."

MATCH OF THE WEEK

DEMOLITION DERBY MAN UTD-4 MAN CITY-2 United went into the game at Old Trafford looking to avoid a fifth successive defeat at the hands of their neighbours and at the same time target a sixth straight Premier League win to keep them in third position in the table. The three points gave the Red Devils a four-point cushion over City in the race for third place in the table. And, with the prize of an automatic Champions

League group stage spot up for grabs, Van Gaal has urged his players to finish the job, while being aware that games against leaders Chelsea and second-placed Arsenal are still on the calendar.

The Dutchman told BBC Sport: "We are now four points ahead of City in third place, which is very important because it gets you automatic qualification into the Champions League.

"The goal we set was to get into the first four and I'll be very pleased if we reach that goal. I said it would not be easy and we still have six matches to play. It is not done yet, but we are on our way." A 4-2 mauling at the hands of Manchester United is not something Manchester City's owners will take kindly to, and the speculation surrounding Manuel Pellegrini will now go into overdrive.

SPEITH WINS GREEN JACKET

He might not yet be the next Tiger Woods, but Jordan Spieth served notice to the golfing world with a record-breaking first major victory at the Masters on Sunday. Spieth became the second youngest winner in Masters history as he completed his wire-towire victory at Augusta with very few nervy moments in Sunday’s final round. The American went into Sunday's final round with a four-shot lead,

extended that by one after his opening nine holes, and at the next beat Phil Mickelson's Masters record of 26 birdies for the week.

Spieth's 28th birdie, at the 15th hole, made him the first player to reach 19 under par at the Masters -e c l i p s i n g Woods' 1997 winning total. A bogey at the last meant he ended tied with the 14time major champion's mark.
