BENIDORM

Famous Blue Flag Beaches Benidorm is the most visited resort in the Costa Blanca by British tourists and it’s no wonder why. Consisting of miles of golden beaches, a host of fantastic theme parks and a nightlife that is unrivalled in any resort. The two main beaches of Benidorm; Levante and Poniente offer quality services, limpid water and fine sands difficult to find elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Benidorm’s beaches are justifiably famous and the resort’s continuing success owes much to those fabulous golden crescents. Stretching for a luxuriant six kilometres from Levante Beach in the east to Poniente Beach in the west, consistently high quality blue flag bathing, lifeguard patrols, a

wealth of water sports and an impressive approach to cleanliness mean these beaches are among the best in Europe. Each has its own particular character so take your pick. From bar to bar and club to club you will find comedians, singers, dancers, live music and of course not forgetting the great old British past time karaoke. From beach bars in the day to disco bars and clubs in the evening and massive discoteques for those who want to dance into the early hours it’s no wonder many don’t want to or simply don’t go home.

Benidorm simply has it all whether young or old, with family or friends. Visit www.vistacostablanca.com for all the latest information and discount offers and up to date information on Benidorm’s Bars, Restaurants, Nightlife and Shopping.

Low Cost festival celebrates its fifth edition on 26th, 27th and 28th July 2013.

The new values competition of the Budweiser low Cost Festival is here once again to bring you the freshest in music. in 2012 it was Granada’s Trepát, in 2011 the Valencians modelo de respuesta polar, and in 2010 the Varry Brava from murcia. This is the edition where it can be your friends band which climb up on the stage at the low Cost Budweiser festival.

Reasons to be Lower in 2013 Now after four editions the Low Cost festival has grown from a two-day festival with a total of 10,000 attendees (first edition in 2009) and one stage to being one of the five most important music festivals in the country that broke records last year with nearly 60,000 attendees, 5 stages, and a three day official programme, two days of fiestas and beach activities and Live shows by more than 40 bands. Be Lower, be Lovver: After its successful campaign for sustainability developed during 2012, Low Cost festival has rapidly positioned itself among the leading environmentally aware festivals in Europe this year getting the certificate VIVO. Measures such as returnable vessels, cardioid sound systems that reduce noise emissions, encouraging carpooling and use of the bicycle or selective rubbish collection for recycling, are just some of the many actions that Low Cost festival has developed to offset their CO2 footprint and thus become an environmentally conscious event. The trajectory has been spectacular on the stages of Low Cost festival since its first edition held on July 30th and August 1st, 2009, where artists and bands like Placebo (two editions in 2010 and 2012), Suede, Kasabian, Editors, Mika, Mando Diao, Cut Copy, Crystal Castles, The Raveonettes, The Planets, These New Puritans, Vive la Fête, Love of Lesbian, Fangoria have performed... it has been the festival that saw the dawn of bands like Supersubmarina or Fuel Fandango, and it maybe has, to this day, one of the best venues to celebrate a festival in the country, the sports centre in Benidorm Guillermo Amor. The Sport Centre Guillermo Amor is an outdoor venue lawn covered, with three musical spaces, ample catering, 2 VIP areas, one with an olympic size pool, and several recreation areas, among them is an island on the lawn with sun loungers, tables, stands to see the concert from a vantage point, a market area with alternative fashion and official merchandise and other activities such as Rock Band Karaoke, where attendees can sing their themes of rock and pop favorites with a real live band. 2013 LINE UP Belle & Sebastian Crystal Castler Two Door Cinema Club Delorentos Monarchy Toy Fangoria Los Enemigos Dorian

Paper Aeroplanes - Dawn O’Porter

Fern Britton - The Holiday Home

Mark Haddon - The Red House

Sophie Kinsella - I’ve Got Your Number

As far as debut novels go this is one to be proud of. 1994 Guernesy, fifteen year olds Renee and Flor couldn’t be more different but in spite of this strike up a friendship forming an intense bond. A gritty, poignant often laugh-out-loud funny novel taking a snapshot of small town adolescence.

A wonderfully witty novel, two sisters, one house. The holiday of a lifetime. Set on a Cornish Cliff. Prudence and constance, two sisters as different as they are competitive. A long buried secret is about to bite them on the bottom. Can they put their feuding aside or will this family holiday push them over the edge? Must-have holiday read.

A dazzlingly inventive novel about modern family from the author of The Curios Incident of The Dog In The Night-Time. The book is told through the eight family characters who’s stories anything but simple. During the week long holiday get together the stage is set for seven days of resentment and guilt.

Poppy Wyatt loses her priceless engagement ring mere weeks before her wedding and in the search for it comes across a mobile phone thrown in the bin. Cue the beginning of finders keepers and the beginning of something special. Cute modern love story, Sophie Kinsella is a fun writer to read. Pure chick lit comedy.

Film reviews The Great Gatsby Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher Whilst certainly ambitious... and every bit as visually dazzling as we’d been lead to believe it would be... This new version of The Great Gatsby emphasises visual splendour at the expense of the original vibrant heart of the story. New York in the 1920s could not be more beautiful but the film making is the true star here, as the characterisation is somewhat shallow. Aftershock Eli Roth, Andrea Osuart, Selena Gomez What happens to a group of travels who are in an underground nightclub in Chile when a massive earthquake hits? Hint: Nothing good. An interesting premiss that ultimately fails to impress.

Star Trek: Into Darkness Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto JJ Abrams delivers an explosive action-thriller that will enthral Trekkies, Pinenuts and Cumberbitches alike along with the rest of film goers. Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a warzone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. Just go and see it. Fast & Furious 6 Vin Diesel, Paul Walker Dwane Johnson Ludicrous but undeniably fun, the stunts are spectacular, the music pumps and the gears grind. This a high octane actionthriller laced with the charm and humour you would expect from the cast.

16

www.vistacostablanca.com

The route for the 100th Tour de France was unveiled yesterday at the Paris Convention Centre, in front of an audience of 4,000 people; as had already been widely rumored the historic centenary edition will me a monster of a climb with the kind of hills likely to rule out a second consecutive overall win for Bradley Wiggins. Indeed Wiggins has already declared it ‘more than likely’ he will play a supporting role to team mate Chris Froome and concentrate instead on winning at the more fitting Giro d’Italia (set in include more than 90km of time trial), saying simply, ‘I just want to be in a successful team.’ The 2013 Tour de France will begin, as was already known, on Corsica (June 29) with three days of racing over 511km before moving to mainland France for the first time trial – the team effort in Nice of 25km. The two subsequent (individual) time trials are set for Stage 11 (Avranches – Mont St Michel, 33km) and Stage 17 (Embrun – Chorges, 32km), a total of 65km down from the 100km of this year. The finish,

as has been traditional for many years, will take place on the ChampsElysees in Paris (July 21) after 3,360km of racing; with the twist for this celebratory edition being that not only will riders go all the way to the top of the famous boulevard and circle the Arc de Triomphe, but their arrival is to be timed for twilight too. But it is without doubt the climbs that will define the 2013 edition; although the rumors that the TdF would finish atop l’Alpe d’Huez rather than in Paris proved – naturally enough – unfounded, the beast will still have to be tackled twice during the 168km Stage 18, and the legendary Mont Ventoux makes a welcome (!) appearance once more for 2013. Adding to the tough mix next year will be four summit finishes, not least of which is likely to be the penultimate stage’s ascent to Semnoz where the entire TdF could be won or lost.

Gabrielle Aplin

English Rain

The British songstress had her first No.1 Single with her cover of ‘The Power Love’, used in the John Lewis 2012 Christmas Advert. Over the past few years Gabrielle gained a huge online following after publishing acoustic covers and released her first 5-Track EP in 2010. She since toured the UK and Europe, meeting fans after every gig expanding her army of loyal followers wherever she went. Earlier this year she supported Ed Sheeran on his Australia/New Zealand tour after being invited along via text message by the Acoustic King himself. First single from the album ‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’ shows her melodic tones and word phrasing to perfection. ‘Panic Cord’ edges closer towards the sort of pop music we’re used to hearing, while other tracks such as ‘How Do You Feel Today’ and ‘Alive’ prove why she really is

the indie-folk princess. It’s notably refreshing to hear an album with every single song written by the artist. I had the pleasure of watching Gabrielle soundcheck at The Electric Circus, Edinburgh, in July last year. Her voice was so effortlessly powerful and she seemed like a sweet, down to earth girl. This album deserves every success and I’m sure it won’t be long before Gabrielle Aplin is a household name and a national treasure.

Tomar acción progresiva te ayudará a sobresalir. Expande tus intereses y tus amistades.

White Wine Sangria Instead of the traditional red, try this delicious sangria recipe with some white wine. Sangria is always a safe choice for a summer BBQ or pool party because it can be pre-made in large quantities. Not to mention all the colorful, in-season fruit varieties make it a much better... and prettier... summer cocktail.

In The Shade Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

Find out which frames flatter your unique facial features. Before you purchase those Prada shades or take off with a pair of aviators by Ray Ban,ask yourself this: “How well do they frame my face?” Choosing sunglasses based on your face shape rather than what’s trendy can mean the difference between looking hot or not. Just like the perfect pair of jeans, the right sunglasses play up your best features and downplay your less than perfect ones. “When choosing sunglasses, you need to think about proportion and creating balance,” says Sam Saboura, celebrity stylist and YouBeauty Style Expert. A general rule: Choose styles that are the opposite of your face shape. For instance, if you have a square-shaped face, opt for round frames to create curves and soften your look. Most people fall into five different face shapes: Oval, square, round, long or heart. Oval faces are perfectly balanced and are like the universal donor—there isn’t a single frame style with which they’re not compatible. The other face shapes work best with frames that balance out their strongest features. People with square-shaped faces tend to have a broad forehead, wide cheekbones and a prominent jawline. Sporting frames with some curve appeal, such as round or oval lenses, help balance these strong angles. Round faces have the opposite structure—they are full all the way around and have little to no sharp edges. Angular frames, such as square lenses, flatter and balance a round face. Long faces are more narrow than wide. Wearing oversized round frames help to create the illusion of a wider, shorter face. Heart faces actually mimic the shape of a heart. They’re wide at the forehead and cheekbones and become narrow at the chin. Frames that broaden a narrow jaw without playing up the width of the forehead, such as aviators, are best bets.

Benidorm Series 6 Seven new episodes are currently been filmed on location in here Spain for broadcast back in the UK.

Jake Canuso - Interview We managed to speak to Jake in between hectic filming sessions for series 6 of the smash hit series Benidorm. Originally Jake was a dancer from a young age and at fourteen trained at Paris Opera. In turn, this lead to him coming to the UK where he had a very successful career as a dancer along side such people as Elton John, Take That and the Spice Girls. “At one time I was filming up to 3 music videos a week, this was a time when there was a lot of innovation, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Kylie, so many pop stars doing great things with creative video... Dancers were paid well and treated well, not like now, I’m glad I had that part of my career when I did.” On asking if he still has friends from that time he says, “The Spice Girls final tour was my last big tour. I’m still good friends with Emma and have seen a lot of Mel C lately. David and Victoria [Beckham] are big fans of the show, she has such a dry sense of humour. We’d love to get David a part in the show!” No doubt the creator Derren Litten is working on that script... Was Joan Collins a surprise? “Not really, Jackie [novelist and sister of Joan] is a huge fan and tweeted me last year, unfortunately Joans’ commitments at the time didn’t allow her to do the filming but I always think positively and this year it happened.” Certainly Miss Collins has made the spanish press wonder what all the fuss is about as when we arrive, Jake is talking to the spanish press, in fluent Spanish as he speaks six languages. “Even my Mum was asking me about Joan,” he laughs, “she saw the photo of me with her and was very impressed.” The Benidorm series is filming till the end of June, make sure you get next months magazine for a more in-depth interview with Jake.

Seven new episodes are currently been filmed on location in here Spain for broadcast back in the UK. Returning to enjoy the ‘four star hotel treatment’ in the new series are Mick Garvey (Steve Pemberton), Janice Garvey (Siobhan Finneran) and Madge Harvey (Sheila Reid). The Dykes, a new family, are also set to be introduced in this series. Heading up the group are Clive (Perry Benson) and Tonya (Hannah Waddingham) - a lively Watford couple with Clive firmly under the thumb of his no-nonsense wife. They bring their two children with them, Bianca (Bel Powley) and Tiger (Danny Walters) both are young, single and looking for fun. Characters returning from previous series include popular swingers Donald Stewart (Kenny Ireland) and Jacqueline Stewart (Janine

Duvitski), who fully intend to claim the free holiday that new manager Joyce Temple Savage (Sherrie Hewson) promised them at the end of the last series. Plus, hunky barman Mateo (Jake Canuso) still holds the fort behind the pool bar with the help of friendly transsexual Les/ Lesley (Tim Healey). The new series also sees Liam (Adam Gillen) join Kenneth DuBeke (Tony Maudsley) at his hair salon ‘Blow & Go’ - the very discreet and selective hair and beauty emporium within the Solana resort. Benidorm looks to include notable guest stars in each series, and Series 6 is set to see Ken Morley, best known for playing Reg Holdsworth in Coronation Street, making a guest appearance. Additionally Hollyoaks pinup Philip Olivier will play a new character, and Matthew Kelly will return as Joyce’s old flame, Cyril Babcock. Series 6 will also see the return of Martin Weedon (Nicholas Burns, pictured), who was last seen in the sitcom in Series 3. Martin arrives on a loud and lairy stag do and, now very single, finds himself having

a drunken ‘encounter’ with one of the well-known female holidaymakers. Benidorm creator Derren Litten, who after sharing writing duties with Pemberton and Neil Fitzmaurice during Series 5, has returned to pen all 7 episodes, says: “I’m so excited about Series 6 of Benidorm, probably more excited than all previous series. Apart from Dynasty Series 5 of course, what could possibly top the Moldavian Massacre?” Derren Litten has written seven fantastic scripts, which might be seven of the best episodes yet. Things are certainly heating up by the pool in this series, with some great new characters as well

as the return of many of our well-loved regulars.

Delighted to confirm that Joan will finally be making a guest appearance on the series finale of the new series of ‘Benidorm’ which is currently filming. Joan will play Crystal Hennesey Vass, the CEO of the Solana Group, who is a thorn in the side of hotel boss Joyce TempleSavage played by Sherrie Hewson. Joan is a huge fan of the show but filming dates had never fitted in with her schedule. Show bosses are over the moon to have Joan on board. “Derren Litten, the show’s creator, has written a brilliant character in Crystal. “But dodgy tans, tasteless cocktails and all-night parties might be an eye opener for her.” Joan is currently in the Holiday resort to film her scenes as you can see from these exclusive shots! The new series can be seen in the Autumn!

Buy any Pizza get second half price

L’ORIGINALE Conveniently located right near to the beach at Levante Benidorm, L’Orignale is a family run business catering in traditional Italian style!!

You can buy a selection of fresh home baked Pizza by the slice or to share a whole pizza with your friends. The VISTA CARD offer this month is Buy One Pizza get the second half price!!! I was tempted by the selection and the Pizza, it looked mouth watering, thin and crispy and exactly how I like it but I was

curious to taste the pasta so I went for the Ravioli with tomato and ham. It was perfect! Really I haven’t had fresh homemade ravioli as tasty for ages and often I don’t venture for pasta dishes because normally I’m disappointed and prefer to wait for my own cooking at home. So I was pleasantly surprised and will recommend to all my pasta loving friends to visit. I’m having the Pizza next time so if you get there before I do then post me your comments on facebook at VISTACOSTA like our page and get a chance to win this month’s prize of a Free Thai Massage and Tickets to Aqualandia.

Absolutely loving Italian food myself I was fast to invite the owners Alex, Ana and Sara to join with VISTA and to promote their new business to our readers, as well as taking the opportunity to taste the food!! Concentrating on the fast food takeaway market I’m sure the locals working around the centre of Benidorm and the many visitors taking a day on the beach will enjoy the opportunity of eating some great Italian food for lunch or a snack in the afternoon.

shoppers Benidorm Shopping guide No holiday would be Shops in Benidorm complete without a touch Old Town of shopping. Benidorm indeed is a shopper’s paradise. When you have sunned yourself on Benidorm’s sunny beaches of Playa Poniente and Playa Levante, gone to all Benidorm’s night clubs and discos, visited Benidorm’s theme parks as well as enjoyed dinner and a show at the Benidorm Palace, wined and dined on the promenades then now it is time to do some shopping.

La Marina Shopping Mall

Benidorm has a commercial area in Finestrat with a shopping mall called La Marina. You can’t miss it. It is just off the N332 and can be seen from the motorway. There is a massive Carrefour, Lidl and McDonalds across the road with ample free parking. The mall itself has all the typical Spanish & European major retailers such as Mango, Zara, Casa, Ale Hop, Douglas, Druni, C&A, Gerry Weber, Guess, Häagen Dazs, Jack & Jones, Massimo Dutti, Orange, Paco Martínez, Vodafone and H&M. There is also a good food court including Burger King and cinema. Centro Comercial La Marina Atención de Gerencia Avenida del País Valencià 2 03509 Finestrat (Alicante)

Some of the most popular shops in Benidorm can be found in the Avenida Martinez Alejos in the pedestrianised Old Town district. More shops can be found along the Passaig de la Carretera where there are many shop selling leather goods around the Plaza Mayor. You can get some great shoes and handbags at great prices to take home with you. Benidorm’s Levante and Rincon de Loix districts are home to Benidorm’s top fashion boutiques with supermarkets, gifts and souvenir shops. The prices are very cheap and In these you can buy all sorts of goods such as sunglasses, beach towels, suncream, swimming trunks and

ladies swimsuits and bikinis at rockbottom prices. Of course there many Chinese bazaar and other little Spanish shops selling some fairly good quality eye catching clothes for very little money. Also if you have children make sure to make a flamenco dress and matching shoes a treat to take home not to mention the typical tourist shops selling post cards, magnets, sombreros, etc. Shopping hours in Benidorm are from ten in the morning until two in the afternoon. Shops close during the hot summer hours siesta time and open again between four and five in the afternoon until nine or ten in the evening.

Guadalest No visit to the Costa Blanca is complete without a trip to its jewel in the crown “Guadalest”. This fortified village perched precariously on a mountain top, is surrounded by some of the highest points in the province of Alicante, the sierra Aixorta, sierra Aitana and Sierra Serrella. The village of Guadalest dates back over a 1000 years and is steeped in history, from the prison and dungeon built in the 12th century to the old wash house used by the local women and has just over 200 inhabitants. Guadalest is probably as well known for the symbolic castle as it is the stunning reservoir which serves all main surrounding towns including Benidorm with their water. Although Guadalest in rich in

agriculture, Almonds, carob bean trees, Olives, Lemons & Oranges, it’s main industry is now tourism. The town is littered with lots of souvenir shops, selling typical local products, leather wear, souvenirs and even a large Lladro shop. There are also many museums including the stunning miniature museum of Antonio Marco which is well worth a visit. Not only can you discover this mountain top village by foot, but you can now take advantage of a boat trip on the stunning reservoir. This is however not any normal boat trip, but a solar powered boat which is environmentally friendly. This will probably be one of the most peaceful places you will visit and the boat takes 45 minutes to sail around the reservoir.

The last stop of the day will be at the Classic motorcycle and car museum. One Mans labour of love, all of these classic vehicles have been painstakingly restored and are in perfect working order in road worthy condition. This trip runs every Tuesday & Thursday and picks up from most major hotels, starting at 10:00am and returning back at approx 15:30. Trip includes return coach journey and you will be accompanied by a Round Town Travel

representative who will tell you all about the local area en route and costs just 15€ for adults & 12.50€ for Children (solar boat ride & museum entrance is an optional extra and not included in the price) To book your seat on this fantastic trip visit any of the Round Town Travel offices in Benidorm, on-line at www.roundtowntravel.com or call (0034) 966 867 294 (English Speaking).

A night out in the old Town Benidorm

www.vistacostablanca.com

Many visitors miss out on the magic that is offered in the Old Town of Benidorm because they stay either close to their Hotel or apartment. With so many places to visit all over Benidorm it is easy to find what most people are looking for without having to go too far but the Old Town is really worth making the short trip either a bus or taxi or a slow walk from one end of the Levante beach into the old streets at the Old Town end. My recommendations for your visit include a variety of food drinks and entertainment starting at Hotel Royal Queens Plaza Constitution a very popular night spot for drinks on the terrace, dinner in the restaurant with three course and a bottle of wine for two people only 29.90â‚Ź its excellent quality and unbeatable value for money. The Queens Girls show starts at 11pm and is a festival of drag comedy, a must see for your visit! If you prefer a taste of Spain then look no further, the Plaza Constitucion opposite the Queens Hotel is Tapas Alley famous for the array of typical Tapas restaurants and La Cava Aragonesa is perfect and really lively the atmosphere is loud but also really typical of Spain. You will find an excellent choice of tapas and some local wines to enjoy. For those that enjoy a traditional British pub with great entertainment then here in the Old Town you will find the very best selection of live music at the Pig n Whistle Calle del Pal, Amy Winehouse tribute is really popular and people come back night after night. If you love to sing then you will also find the opportunity here with the Karaoke sessions . Just a few steps along the narrow street (Calle del Pal) you will see from the busy pavment where passers by stop to see the live drag shows at the Klee Kafee one of the most famous night spots in the Old Town , free entrance and a line up of great acts each night. Some night you will stuggle to get in so I recommend you arrive early!!

A night out in Style

Dlux restaurant Albir has the ambiance, style and most of all the quality of great food, wine and Champagne. You don’t have to be rich to enjoy some luxury in fact it’s almost impossible to expect such high a standard of cuisine for the price. The special menu board is presented by the restaurant owner Harmen who has been specialising in fine dining for many years here in the Costa Blanca. Harmen will explain the dishes of the day along with the details of the ingredients and cooking methods, the choice is incredible and the problem is to choose because the menu choices are all tantalising and interesting. The place settings are modern and contemporary with all of the fine finishing touches and extras and when the food is served you will be amazed at the presentation and the attention to the detail that is observed to every plate. Celebrating a birthday, wedding anniversary or any other celebration Dlux is an excellent choice to make the occasion special and memorable. You can arrive for drinks on the spacious outside terrace and relax in a comfortable setting with coloured low lighting, trees and planting creating a cool and delicate ambiance. Greet your guests if you’re dining as a group or take a table as a couple of family, most new guests want to try the bouncy

42

www.vistacostablanca.com

sofas as they look like fun but in fact are extremely comfortable. International cuisine in Spain covers most people taste and at Dlux you will find a host of English, Dutch, Russian and many local Spanish clients who will indulge in choice of international food that will normally include Lobster and other fantastic seafood, a variety of meats and grilled steaks and the best salads that I’ve seen anywhere. Choosing a night out can always be a bit difficult, trying to choose something for everyone. Not too posh but special is a common predicament so when the

birthday party of local girls from Benidorm was on the agenda I recommended Dlux together with a Limousine to arrive in style. The fun starts straight away because the Limo pick up always creates the excitement at the start of the night to remember and once you are on board then the bubbly will be poured and the party can begin. Arriving at Dlux is interesting if you haven’t been before as the setting is quite special and different. Once you have had your welcome drink served you can relax and enjoy the rest of the evening with your friends & family.

La Cala Beach Finestrat A giant billboard measuring 3 metres high by 8 metres wide welcomes visitors in several languages including English and Russian to the town and directs them to the sandy beach. Many people do not even realise that La Cala comes under Finestrat, assuming that it belongs to Benidorm. It is certainly worth a trip down there though, especially if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, favoured by families, you can park your car for free right next to the beach area. Small friendly local bars, Maddies in the main street and Bar Sol round the corner of the cove offer British food and a friendly welcome. There are many restaurants serving Spanish Menu del Dia and a choice of cafés to choose your favourite helado (ice-cream). New businesses include a dog grooming salon with a 50’s feel run by Susana who trained in Italy and is already busy with new customers.

Llorente bus, run a fairly regular service - the numbers 2, 3, 14, 15 and 25 all go there, 2 from the Rincon de Loix and Benidorm centre, 3 from the Old Town through the Playa Poniente. Taxis are around 10€ from central Benidorm. Should you decide to rent a car you will receive great friendly service at Fine Rent A Car in Avenida Marina Baixa.

Revival of the Retro Bikini

by Lauren Marion

The bikini as we know it first appeared on the beaches of France in 1947. The word “bikini” creates a different image in everyone’s mind, the majority probably being of 3 small triangles strung together to cover the essentials. Far from the visual of the beaches of France 65 years ago. The bikini was made popular in the 20th century by pinup girls such as Esther

Williams, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner, carrying on through the 60’s with Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot.

There are so many different styles of swimsuits, one piece, two piece, tankini, trikini, halternecks, bandeau, surf shorts... By the 2000’s, bikinis had become a multi-million pound business annually. 2013 sees the return of the vintage bikini, they are featured on catwalks all over the world and iconic highstreet fashion store Topshop have named the high-waisted bikini “this year’s musthave item”. Numerous celebrities including Taylor Swift, Reese Witherspoon and Kim Kardashian have also been seen rocking the vintage vibe. The girls who originally wore this style of bikini were not a size 0, nor a size 6. That was, however, irrelevant because they were stylish, glamorous and their clothing flattered their figures. Highwaisted bikinis look great on any body shape and are very feminine, suggesting anyone can be confident in a two-piece this summer. Team with a head scarf and a slick of black eyeliner (make sure it’s waterproof

ladies if you’re actually going to go in the pool!) to emulate that classic Hollywood starlet look. Advances in fabric technology means that we have so much more choice when it comes to bold colours and prints from the high-street to high-end fashion. This year Kelly Brook has done her second collection for New Look, predominantly featuring styling from the 50’s. Every fashion retailer from River Island and Urban Outfitters to the designers such as Ted Baker and Alexander Wang seem to have at least one maxi-bottom in their summer collection. Old-style bathing suits still look fresh and modern and designers are consistently coming up with new creations. Whatever you choose this summer, I’m sure most of us will have our own version of a retro bikini packed in our holiday suitcase. I’ve got more than one in my wardrobe already!

Specsavers was founded in 1984 by optometrists Doug and Dame Mary Perkin; they started out with two part-time staff – both of whom are still with the company today – in their spare bedroom using a table-tennis table as a desk. Glasses were posted to their first few stores from a nearby letterbox. Little did they think then that their small optical business would during the next 28 years expand to more than 1,500 stores, spanning ten countries across two continents and employing over 26,000 staff. The value-for-money approach meant that, for the first time, people were able to view glasses not just as a necessity but also as a fashion accessory. This was helped in no small part by Specsavers pioneering the introduction of two for one – buy one pair of glasses and the second pair is free. Specsavers has been trading in Spain as Specsavers Opticas since 2006, and has been steadily establishing itself in coastal areas where there is a good mix of Spanish and foreign residents and tourists. Benidorm Opticas is one of the eight stores across the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol. Come and visit the store today or to book a free eye test call 965 859 577 or visit specsavers.es
