Dear Readers

With the start of October soon upon us we can all sit back and reflect on how wonderful life is on the Costa Blanca. During September there were many events and fun filled days to remember, but in particular the weather has been amazing and the thousands of holiday makers have been rewarded with what has been one of the warmest Septembers on record. October will undoubtedly be much cooler, especially during the evenings and overnight. This is the time of year when many of us will start to plan ahead for Christmas and with only 12 weeks to go some of us have already made arrangements for a Christmas lunch out. In fact recently, when talking to some local business owners, I was amazed to learn that their restaurants were already almost fully booked for Christmas Day. So if you’re planning to spend Christmas Day eating out then maybe now is the time to decide where and get in before your preferred venue is booked out. I simply adore a Christmas at home although I must say that if possible my plan would be to book a holiday and be spoiled in a nice hotel with all the necessary luxuries but the question is where? A city break in Barcelona has the appeal of being out and about, taking in the culture and site seeing, as well as finding the time to relax in comfort. Then again I can imagine a winter break in Tenerife, always a popular destination for winter sun seekers. Whatever the final decision, one thing for sure is that from Friday 23rd December until early in January, myself and the Buzz team will be taking a well deserved break. In the meantime you will see much more of what we have been working towards. The Buzz media team are always working hard to provide British readers with the best and most enjoyable read around.

Teacher Under Severe Storms on the Horizon as Weather Investigation for Racial Causes Chaos in Parts of Valencia

Some of the precipitation fell as golf-ball sized hail and caused damage to around 400 hectares of grapevines in the RequenaUtiel area, famous worldwide for it’s Valencian wines. The same area also experienced damage caused by overflowing streams, damaged roads and broken walls. Electrical storms started around a dozen forest fires in tinder dry Castellon while a number of small house fires were

also reported due to lightning strikes. Flights were disrupted from both Valencia and Alicante airports, while in Valencia city there were 23 emergency service call outs related to the weather over incidents such as falling trees and dangerous walls while several roads were blocked due to flooding and debris. The forecast for the Alicante province is not so severe but there still appears to be a chance

Police believe they may have stolen up to 100,000 kilos of the fruit and are linking them to over 30 reported thefts of that nature in the region. Police had noticed a

sharp spike in reported thefts of lemons and suspected an organised gang was behind the problem. A special unit was set up and several vulnerable farms were identified and discreetly monitored. This eventually led to the apprehension of the gang who were caught in the act. They believe the group had been selling the fruits in large numbers in a single small village in Andalucia.

Man Chains Up Neighbour and Sets Fire to Building

By Simon Russell

NATIONAL Police in Alicante arrested a man earlier this month and accused him of imprisonment and attempted murder they have revealed. The incident came to life after a fire was reported in a building in the city. The fire brigade attended the scene immediately and when entering the building found someone chained in one of the rooms who they were fortunately able to rescue. They say they building had clearly been meant to burn down as quickly as possible as a bonfire had been made of

combustible goods such as furniture in the basement. Investigating further the police established there had been an earlier complaint after a resident of the building had threatened to burn the building down with everyone still inside it. With the help of a forensics team the trail quickly led to the arrest of a 38 year old man in Alicante city. Police say as well as the imprisoned man the fire had the potential to spread and cause serious damage and loss of life to other residents in the area.

Greater Protection for Les Salines

By Simon Russell THE Les Salines salt lake in Calpe, famous for it’s flamingos and other unique flora and fauna, looks set to be finally awarded full Natural Park status. Although many people would be surprised to know that

this is not already the case, Calpe Town Hall has experienced problems getting the final sign off from the Valencian Generalitat. It appears this will now be forthcoming and Les Salines will join the Penyal d’Ifach as a fully designated natural park

in the town. This gives the lakes full protection against any future development in an area that many developers have been eyeing up for a while. It is expected that Les Salines and the Penyal will be recognised as a single Parque Natural.

Story of Missing Girl Continues to Grip Spain

By SImon Russell

EXTENSIVE national media coverage continues a month after 18 year old Diana Quer seemingly vanished off the face of the earth a month ago. This has been fuelled by her families tangled personal life and causing (or accelerating) the separation of her parents who have both used the media to tell their own side of the story. Diana’s father, Juan Carlos Quer, is a wealthy entrepreneur and there is also an ongoing custody battle over Diana’s younger sister and the

mud slinging that often accompanies such things. In the meantime despite the deployment of over 100 Guardia Civil officers and 75 other security force members no trace whatsoever has been found of Diana who disappeared in the early hours seemingly after returning to the family home in La Coruna to change her clothing. Meanwhile this remains one of the most publicized missing person case in Spanish history - but sadly the trail remains cold.

IT’S many supporters will be hoping that their aim of a train service connecting Alicante and Valencia may come a step closer after a meeting due to be held on Thursday September 29 in Alicante. Alicante’s governing tripartite are hoping to finally establish if the region would be better served by a high speed service with only three stops (Benidorm, Denia and Oliva) between the community’s two major cities or by a slower service with many more steps, possibly around fifteen. Alicante’s governors are thought to favour the option with more frequent stops as this would obviously make the train accessible to more citizens along the route. However this option would be both more expensive and slower and the Ministry of Development would seem to prefer the high speed/less stops option based on finances and it’s benefit to the overall rail network. Travellers between the two cities may well be put off their journey if there were multiple stops along the way is one argument. Both parties are in agreement that a viable transport alternative is needed to the AP7 motorway and N332 with the latter beginning to reach saturation point for traffic in many stretches.

Tragedy Narrowly Avoided as Factory Explodes

By Simon Russell

An explosion in a wood factory sounds like a recipe for disaster. Indeed fire crews are saying that when the factory at Albal near Valencia was destroyed, things could have been a lot worse as there were no deaths or life threatening injuries. It appears a fire quickly spread but when the actual explosion occurred the factory had

English Testing Introduced for Fallas Queen Candidates

By Simon Russell

THERE is more to being a Fallera than looking good in a costume and the city of Valencia has now included proficiency with English amongst it’s testing criteria to decide who will be selected for the 2017 Fallas festival in the city. There are 72 candidates for the thirteen

prestigious roles and the committee who will decide the eventual winners will also be testing skills such as presentation manner, knowledge of the festival and people skills as well as the “beauty queen” aspect of the selection. The Fallas is probably the main cultural event on the cities calendar

and generates a large number of tourists. It is deemed necessary that the Falleras should be able to communicate in at least basic English with those tourists who can speak the language. The Fallerras also have to make public speeches during the event as well as facing the press if called upon.

Driver Seriously Off Course

By Simon Russell

An elderly Iraqi driver undertook a bizarre and potentially dangerous journey recently. The 77 year old had travelled for around 30 kilometres driving the wrong way and towards oncoming traffic on the motorway between Alicante and Valencia. Understandably authorities were alerted and he

was intercepted near Xativa, thankfully before anyone was hurt. Bizarrely, it emerged his journey had started 500 kilometres away in Malaga where he had been on an outing with his family and went to park the car. He became lost and disoriented and decided to try and return to his nearby home.

However somehow he ended up in Valencia where he still appeared disoriented. It also transpires he had driven another 100 kilometres or so the wrong way on a different stretch of motorway further north. The man has been arrested for road safety offences and will appear before Xativa’s courts shortly.

Wearing of Hijab Not to be Restricted Across Valencia

By Simon Russell

Along with the more recent development of the “burkini” the hijab headscarf has divided opinion about whether it should be worn in public. The Valencian Generalitat have gone a long way towards clarifying the hijab’s use by confirming there will be no restrictions on women wearing the scarf in any of it’s publicly owned buildings across the community. This includes health centres, schools and town hall buildings as well as any other publicly funded facility. The idea is to co-ordinate a consistent approach to the hijab rather than have the decisions made at a local level as was often the case before. This follows on from the recent case of student Takwa Rejeb who was excluded from her school in Valencia

for refusing to remove her scarf. The dress code applies to all faiths where applicable and will also cover issues such as food preparation and even funeral rites. A spokesman said that while the government was essentially a secular entity “we also want to be able to relate to all religions which are a social fact of life.”

2017 Fiesta Calendar Confirmed

By Simon Russell

THE Valencian government has announced the fiesta days for 2017 at national and community level. There had been a proposal to make San Juan (24 June) a holiday but this was

not approved, at least for 2017. However Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday) has been included which falls on April 13 which means the Easter break will stretch out for at least five days for most workers. The full dates are

January 6, April 13, 14 and 17, May 1, August 15, October 9 and 12, November 1 and December 6 and 25. There will also be two further days of local fiestas announced by the individual municipalities throughout the region.

Protest Ends in “Attack” on Councillor

By Simon Russell

AROUND 60 protesting dock workers went to the offices of Alicante’s Port Authority to make their feelings clear as part of an ongoing dispute. The situation soon turned ugly and several town hall representative attended to try and “talk to the workers”. However the workers

group remained unhappy with whatever was said and town planning councillor Miguel Pavon alleged he was attacked and said he is considering filing charges. The mayor and deputy were also at the scene but were unharmed. The counter allegation by the protestors is

that Pavon was provocative and pushy himself and started the scuffle. In the end the mayor’s bodyguard intervened and led Pavon away. The dispute revolves around planned development of the port and issues around environmental licenses.

Russian School to Open on Costa Blanca By Simon Russell

AROUND 80 volunteers took the Benidorm leg of the “Clean up the World” campaign to the iconic Benidorm island earlier this month. They collected a total of 300 kilos

of rubbish after being ferried out to the island on local vessel “La Golodrina”. Councillor for Citizen Participation Maria Pinto took part and said it was good to see how many citizens were willing to become involved and

is confident that as the event grows in profile more will take part each year. The Clean up the World initiative is worldwide and is sponsored and promoted by the United Nations.

Simply Delicious or Truly Scrumptious

Now celebrating 10 years in business Karen and her hard working team serve the best pastries, cakes and lunches to both the thousands of holiday makers in the area and a host of local businesses and their workers. “Benidorm’s answer to Gregg’s” arrived after Karen returned to Spain, having first lived here with her parents as a teenager. In 2006 she decided to open her own business when “Simply Delicious” was born. I asked Karen why the name Simply Delicious and she replied “the name was chosen to reflect what we want to serve, which is the best tasting food that relies on both good quality ingredients as well as the know how in preparation and cooking. People may think making snacks sandwiches and cakes is easy but I can assure you that to do it well is no easy task” Starting out as just one unit the single local was originally a take away only outlet but after securing the next door building Karen turned the two units

into one large, spacious area. The extra space allowed them room for tables and chairs so food could be eaten on the premises as well as being for take away. 10 years on the success story continues and Karen is always looking to improve the customer experience. She has recently refurbished and reformed the entrance. The stylish frontage is made up of a glass known as “Glass Curtains” that fold back and open out to the lovely outdoor terrace. These improvements are further complimented with stylish new flooring and matching furniture with comfortable cushions. The wide selection of British favourites offered includes a great range of sandwiches and pastries. However if you prefer a healthier option Simply Delicious are famous for their wonderful salads and baked potatoes. If you’re not watching your waistline then you can indulge in home made cakes including cream cakes, lemon meringue, carrot cake, chocolate Dime Bar cake, chocolate eclairs, scones with real or clotted cream, banoffee pie, chocolate fudge cake, traditional apple pie the list is Simply endless...... For more than a snack there are daily specials such as crispy chicken with chips plus various pies such as steak, steak and Guinness, mince beef and chicken and mushroom. They even have home made gravy, peppercorn sauce and curry sauces. For that early start try breakfast with superb bacon butties and sausage baguettes. Talking to Karen about the produce used she told me “ We cook our own ham, chicken and beef. We also make

our own stuffing and bake our own cakes. We select foods from the U.K. and also serve real coffee as well the original instant, Nescafé. Our current offer is for any cake together with a cup of Tetley tea or Nescafé for only 3€ - how good is that” Being in Benidorm you need to be a little diverse so Karen also serves bottled beers, Smirnoff Ice or why not relax with a cake and G & T? Karen’s latest addition is girly afternoon Tea Parties called “Tipsy Tea Party”, a great warm up for the evening ahead and becoming increasingly popular. This Friday 30th September Karen is hosting a special event for Macmillan Cancer Research, so come along to the Macmillan’s Coffee Morning - buy a cake and donate the money to a very important charity. See you there !

Losing Your Crowning Glory?

Male pattern baldness is hereditary. It is thought to be caused by oversensitive hair follicles, linked to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is made from the male hormone testosterone. If there is too much DHT, the follicles react to it. The hair becomes thinner and grows for a shorter length of time than normal. The balding process is gradual because different follicles are affected at different times. Female pattern baldness is much less understood. Post menopausal women may have an increased chance of female pattern baldness because they have fewer female hormones. It is not clear whether there is an hereditary factor.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is condition that casuses hair loss due to an imbalance in the body’s immune system. The immune system is the body’s natural defence system, which helps protect it from infection by bacteria and viruses. In the case of alopecia areata, not only does the immune system attack the cause of infection, it also damages the hair follicles. It is not clear exactly why this happens. Fortunately, the hair follicles are not permanently damaged and in many cases the hair grows back within a few months. Alopecia areata is more common among people with other autoimmune conditions, such as thyroid disease, diabetes & vitiligo (a condition that produces white patches on the skin) It is also more common among people with Down’s syndrome. More than one in 20 people with Down syndrome have alopecia areata. There is also a suggestion that there may be an hereditary factor as around one in five people with alopecia areata have a family history of the condition.

Scarring alopecia

Scarring alopecia is a different condition which causes permanent damage to the hair follicles. In many cases, it is unclear why this happens, although it is sometimes the result of another condition. Conditions that can cause scarring alopecia include: • scleroderma – a condition that affects the body’s connective (supporting) tissues, resulting in hard, puffy and itchy skin • lichen planus – a non-infectious, itchy rash that can affect many areas of the body • discoid lupus – a mild form of lupus that affects the skin, causing scaly marks and hair loss • folliculitis decalvans – a rare form of alopecia that most commonly affects men, causing baldness and scarring of the affected areas • frontal fibrosing alopecia – a type of alopecia that affects post-menopausal women where the hair follicles are damaged, and the hair falls out and is unable to grow back

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a type of temporary hair loss that can be caused by your body reacting to: • hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy • intense emotional or physical stress • a short-term illness, such as a severe infection or an operation • a long-term illness, such as cancer or liver disease • changes in your diet, such as crash dieting • some medications

Anagen effluvium

Anagen effluvium is the name given to hair loss usually caused by medical treatments for cancer, most commonly chemotherapy. However, not all chemotherapy drugs cause hair loss and sometimes the hair loss is so small it is hardly noticeable. In some cases, other cancer treatments including immunotherapy and radiotherapy may also cause hair loss. If you are suffering from hair loss you should see your Family Doctor first for a proper diagnosis of the cause rather than buy ‘over the counter’ special hair products. Dogs Eating Poop (Coprophagia) Why Do They Do It? Poop eating in dogs is definitely a behavior problem. According to experts there are a few reasons for poop eating in dogs. It occurs mostly in puppies. It might be a behavioral problem or even an underlying medical problem. If this occurs excessively, the responsible thing to do would be to take your dog to your vet to have him checked out. Although this is a possibility, it is mostly a behavioral problem. So when all medical problems are eliminated, it is time to look at the other reason why this happens. It is important for your dog to have his vaccinations regularly. Diseases can also be spread through poop eating. Why does your dog eat poop? Hiding evidence. Your dog might know that this is unacceptable bad behaviour. So he might eat it after having to go in the house for fear of the consequences. Your puppy might even be confused about it. If he was punished for doing it inside, he might think he was punished for doing it. So he might eat it even if he does it outside, because he thinks he should not do it at all.

Dog might be bored. Your dog might be bored and have nothing to do. Get your dog a few toys or even a friend. Dogs learn to socialize while interacting with other dogs. He needs to come into contact with others like him. If you grew up among dogs and never came into contact with humans like you, you might think you are a dog, right? And you might not know how to interact with others like you. Copying other dogs

Likes the taste.

If you have more than one dog, there is a possibility that one of your dogs might copy another. Especially the younger ones.

Your puppy might simply just love the taste of the poop.

Hungry Dog. This can occur in dogs that get fed once a day. They get hungry and the poop is the closest thing to supper. Overfed Dog. An overfed dog can digest his food too quickly resulting in the poop still smelling like his supper. And if it smells like supper, then it must be supper, right? Well for a dog it might be. Protecting against predators. This is protective behaviour. When a bitch eats her puppies poop, one dog eats another (sick) dogs poop in an attempt to protect him against predators. After all, dogs are wild animals... and they have protective instincts. Dog Cleaning House Your dog will eat his poop if things get too much. If you take too long to clean his house out, he might just take the initiative to spring clean his house. There are quite a few theories on how to stop your dog from eating poop. However I have found a few that is quite useful. Clean up as soon as possible. Your dog will not eat poop right after he had a meal. If possible try to clean as soon as possible. Try feeding him twice a day to avoid him getting too hungry. If he is not hungry, there is a good chance that he will not eat his poop. Mix pineapple or garlic into his food. Apparently it tastes awful in the poop, but I will not be able to verify it as I have not tried it before. Try to keep your dog stimulated. If he does not get bored too often, he might not see an opportunity to eat his poop. Happy Puppy Training...

La Rioja, Navarra & Aragón All the world’s greatest wine regions share one aspect in common: they produce grapes that ripen slowly and exhibit different and sometimes fascinating flavours in differing microclimates within that region. Today we want to introduce you to 3 amazing wine regions: La Rioja, Navarra and Aragón. La Rioja is both a province and an autonomous region located in the North of Spain. It is situated between Castilla La Mancha to the south, Castilla León to the west, Aragón to the east and Navarra and the Pais Vasco to the north. Of course, everyone knows the wines from La Rioja. This area of Spain has over 500 wineries and is internationally famous for the quality of its wines. As well as wine tasting, a visit to this region also offers a range of activities which take place in and around the extensive vineyards, including horse-riding, hot-air ballooning, 4x4 routes… Logroño is the capital of La Rioja, a charming, tiny region four hours north of Madrid. Famous for its red wine and for being a stopover on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage that cuts across northern Spain. Logroño has plenty of undiscovered merits and allures of its own. After being named one of the top cities to live in throughout Spain, Logroño was also just awarded the prestigious honour of the 2012 Gastronomic Capital of Spain. Unaffected by the mass tourism that has swept across Spain in the past few decades, Logroño feels like a “traditional” Spanish town with a modern twist, especially when it comes to food and wine. Culture and wine together make an unbeatable combination. And add to that some amazing natural attractions... In La Rioja you’ll find Mediterranean forests, high mountain areas, lunar landscapes… Apart

from its capital, Logroño, you’ll be able to explore other places such as Santo Domingo de la Calzada and its cathedral, San Millán de la Cogolla, site of the monasteries of Suso and Yuso, declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO and known for being the birthplace of the first written words in the Spanish language. Alfaro is another Region of La Rioja we would like you to discover, washed by the waters of the Ebro and Alhama Rivers. Stroll through the centre of the town and discover churches and palaces with centuries of history, witnesses of its ancient splendour, such as the old Abbey and Abbey Palace (18th century), and the San Miguel Collegiate Church, a Baroque masterpiece from the end of the 17th century. Besides this, Alfaro has a spectacular colony of storks, the world’s largest nesting on one single building. Watching this number of storks flying through the air is an unforgettable spectacle. We need also to mention La guardia, a delightful town located at the top of a hill, overlooking vineyards and surrounded by a medieval wall. Navarra is an area of contrasts, ranging from the mountains and fertile valleys of the north to the dry, dusty landscapes of the south. It’s one of the four territories that make up Spain’s Basque Country. Navarra is probably best known to foreigners because of its regional capital, Pamplona, where the famous San Fermin bull-running festival inspired American author Ernest Hemingway to write some of his most famous novels, but it has much more to offer than bullfighting. One of the top sights to visit also in Navarra is the town of Olite, home to the kings of Navarra. There is a marvellous castle that makes this town in an authentic medieval city.

17

Olite Castle

Aragon is a quiet and very unspoilt region of Spain. Surrounded by mountains with the Pyrenees in the north and the mountainous Sistema Iberico area to the south. Aragon is home to some of the finest Mudejar architecture in the world. The quiet, serpentine streets of Tarazona’s old town are an evocative reminder of the layout of a medieval Spanish town and contain some absorbing sights. The cuisine of these three regions has in common the presence of the rich vegetables from the lands watered by the Ebro River and its tributaries. La Rioja is a Paradise for those who love good eating and drinking, as most of those who visit the region are seduced by the popularity of its extraordinary wines. The Navarra cuisine can be defined as a good combination of original elements from the delicious kitchen of the northern Spain with delicate French influences. Then the Aragonesa cuisine, as well as the Riojana or Navarra one, it is based on a variety of popular stews that contain meat, vegetables, fish or legumes. Join us and visit Navarra, Aragón and La Rioja,

Keeping the basal stems pinched encourages the continual production of tender new leaves and prevents the plant from flowering and producing seeds. To harvest a big bunch for pesto or just to keep the plant productive, shear off the top third of the stems regularly once the plant has reached 12 to 18 inches tall. Also, never cut the woody part of the plant near the

base or the won’t grow back.

Harvest basil leaves anytime after the young plants have reached a height of six to eight inches. Keep in mind two or three plants will yield plenty of basil unless you’re making lots of pesto. When the night begins to cool down plants will slow their growth dramatically. At the first prediction of even the lightest frost, go

ahead and harvest all your basil because it will quickly turn black in cold weather. Make easy work of this by cutting off the entire plant at ground level then picking off the best leaves for use. Cutting the ends of the basal stems and placing them in water will keep them fresh for days and fill your home with a wonderful fragrance.

Biggest Increase in Price of New Builds For 10 Years

House prices have been steadily rising for quite some time now. But this has mainly been down to the popularity of second-hand properties, while the interest in new builds continued to fall. However, the latest statistics for the second quarter of 2016 have revealed that the value of new-build properties have shot up, taking it to maximums registered at the end of 2007. The average price of prop-

erty in Spain went up annually by 3.9% at the end of the second quarter of this year (June), although when compared to the first three months of the year, they actually fell 2.5%, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Looking purely at figures for new builds, however, their value increased 8.4% from the same period last year. Due to the fact that house prices have gone up 3.9% in

the last year, this now means that we have registered nine consecutive quarters of positive annual increases in prices. That’s just over two years. Nevertheless, when comparing these figures to those of the previous quarter, when property prices rose 6.3%, the figure was reduced by more than 3% due to the drop in re-sale property prices, taking it to sit at 3.2%. On the other hand, the

19

value of new-build property shot up 8.4% annually, which is an increase that we haven’t seen in many years. Between the first and second quarter of this year, the price of new builds went up 3.7%. The price of re-sale property rose 1.5% during this time. In every autonomous region, house prices fell annually at the end of the second quarter of this year, except

for in the Basque Country where they remained at an increase of 2.8%. The largest drops were recorded in the Canary and Balearic Islands, while prices were reduced the least in Extremadura and AragĂłn.

20% of Foreigners Plan on Buying a Holiday Home in Spain

According to a study carried out by franchise estate agent’s Iberia Real Estate, two out of every ten foreigners plan on purchasing a second home in Spain. The most popular destinations for these potential foreign property buyers are located along the Mediterranean coast. With the rise in tourism and the threat of terrorist attacks in nearby countries, Spain is becoming even more popular with foreign visitors who are thinking of buying a holiday home abroad. Tourism is up 6% on last year, with more than 42.4 million international tourists visiting the peninsular and its

islands in just the first seven months of the year. Iberia Real Estate’s survey has revealed that the Germans are the most interested in acquiring a second property in Spain, particularly in the beach areas of the Levante, Cataluña and Mallorca.

Nevertheless, despite the fact that the study has shown that coastal destinations along the Mediterranean continue to attract the greatest number of potential foreign property buyers, other sources have also revealed that many others are looking at other areas including Andalucía, Cantabria and Galicia and destinations slightly inland where property is much cheaper. Many are still opting to buy repossession properties from the bank due to the accessible prices, often as much as 50% cheaper than their market value, and conditions on offer.

Popularity of Discount Clubs for Luxury Hotel Stays Rises

The Internet is a great tool for many different things. It has helped users access services that before its introduction may have seemed unheard of. These days you can purchase almost anything online (not always a good thing) and the world is now a smaller place as you can reach the other corner of the world with your fingertips. Since the economic crisis and its recovery, Internet experts continue to create new and exciting ways of consumption. Many businesses have had to reassess the way in which they communicate with their clients, but in many cases it has brought many advantages with it. This is definitely the case with tourism.

When it comes to booking a hotel or flight, the price is still generally the most important factor. This in itself has led to the rise and success of comparison sites, flash promotions, discount offers or even travel clubs, whose main aim is to attract new clients by giving them money off on the usual price of a service. In the case of hotel rooms this works very well. The hotel wants all of its rooms

to be occupied, while the travel club is out for the commission on bringing in new business. So, for all those with a good eye for spotting a great offer, it is possible to find fantastic deals for a limited amount of time and end up paying a lot less than they would normally. While mainstream hotels may be fully booked most of the time, it is best to check out what’s going on with a more expensive place to stay. It is often here that you will find the best promotions.

Ibex Insurance… closer to you! As your local broker we are a one stop shop for all your insurance needs. For this reason, in the last few years, a number of new online holiday and hotel discount clubs have begun to operate, which are able to offer their members some very special deals and discounts on places to stay. The first of these clubs include

Voyage Privé or Just Book, but now there are many others on the market. The latest one to join the list is Secret Escapes, a British company that now operates in 21 other countries globally as well. Secret Escapes was launched in Spain a year ago and already has more than a million registered users. You can sign up for free just by giving your email, which will give you access to discounts of up to 70% on numerous luxury hotels in Spain, Europe and across the globe. Spain is an important market due to its potential for national and international tourism, with destinations such as Mallorca, the Canary Islands, Barcelona or Madrid being hugely popular with national and international tourists.

BREXIT UPDATES

Brexit forever? Britain keeps the world waiting for EU divorce papers

If investors hoped for one thing after Britain’s shock vote to leave the European Union, it was clarity. But there is little.

Britain has so far been clear about what will not happen: Prime Minister Theresa May has repeated that the formal divorce notification will not be sent before the end of the year and that Britain will not get a bad deal. “We will be getting the right deal for the United Kingdom and that is the right deal in terms of trade in goods,” May told the chiefs of Wall Street and major U.S. companies such as Citigroup and Amazon in New York this week. During her trip, May said the EU divorce filing would take a few months of preparation, was clear that Brexit would happen and sought to reassure the world that Britain was not turning away from the world. Investors ranging from Londonbased banks and Wall Street to Japanese carmakers and small British businesses have repeatedly asked for reassurances from the British government over what Brexit will mean for them and when.

But aside from perturbed investors, Britain’s new leader must balance an abundance of views on Brexit: German and French leaders facing elections in 2017, a divided electorate that will vote again in 2020 and a strong pro-Brexit wing in her party and government. May has made clear she will not give a running commentary on Brexit or lay out all her negotiating cards in public, though some aides have suggested her plan is to invoke Article 50 early in 2017. Boris Johnson, the most prominent leader of the Brexit campaign and now May’s foreign minister, said Britain would trigger divorce by invoking Article 50 of the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty in a letter early next year.

“What we’re doing is talking to our European friends and partners now in the expectation that, by the early part of next year, you will see an Article 50 letter, we will invoke that, and in that letter I’m sure we will be setting out some parameters for how we propose to take this forward,” Johnson told Sky News television in New York.

When asked about Johnson’s comment, a Downing Street spokeswoman said: “The Government’s position has not changed – we will not trigger Article 50 before the end of 2016 and we are using this time to prepare for the negotiations.”

Article 50, a the 256-word provision drafted by a former British ambassador to the EU, has never been used so there is no legal precedent for how it works though it gives a twoyear period to work out the divorce. “You have two years to pull it off,” Johnson said. “I don’t actually think we will necessarily need to spend a full two years but let’s see how we go.” Johnson gave few details about how to pull off one of the complicated negotiations in recent European history in such a short time. Some

officials and lawyers say the negotiation could take much longer than the two-year window set out in Article 50. He said Britain would benefit from greater free trade with the EU as it was in the interest of EU companies to give Britain, which currently accounts for about 15 percent of EU gross domestic product, a good deal.

IKEA (finally!) Launches Online Purchase Service in Spain

At long last, Ikea, the giant Swedish furniture and home decor store, is opening an online shop in Spain. This will be introduced by way of two pioneering programmes in two of its vast stores, one in Alfafar, Valencia, and the other in the Barakaldo, Vizcaya, Basque Country. There will also be a further collection point in Pamplona. The Scandinavian company will be offering home delivery for an additional payment, which will depend on the cost of the item, its size and the mileage required. There will also be a service called ‘click & collect’ whereby you select your items and pay for them online. Then you can drive to Ikea yourself to pick up your purchases, saving you the time and energy required to wander through the entire shop for hours on end, which is usually the norm, searching for the goods that you

have in mind to buy.

For some of us, visiting the actual store is all part of the IKEA experience, yet many will no doubt embrace this extra service that comes at a cost of 16 euro. This cost may rise to 21 euro should the item have to be transported to another IKEA collection point. This service will be launched this December and will mark the beginning of IKEA’s online shopping service in Spain. Most of the items in the catalogue will be available for online purchase. However, items that have many colour and fabric options are excluded. These include textiles, worktops, Persian carpets and others. The home delivery service comes at a minimum of cost of

55 euro. This amount increases exponentially depending on the total purchase price of the order and on the distance it has to travel to its final destination. To give you an idea of the type of costs you may be charged, here is an example: for the delivery of a purchase of a value of anything between 3,001 euro and 4,500 euro to the most remote area from the store, you will pay 283 euro. The Swedish company is already operating online in Sweden, the UK, Germany, Canada and the US. IKEA’s sales in Spain reached 1,281 million euro in the last fiscal year, 10% more than its total turnover reached the previous year. The company has invested 700 million euro in the last five years.

Toyota Mirai FCV 2015

Affordable, practical and surprisingly well-made, the Fiat Tipo is a sensible family car - similar in size to a Ford Focus. The engine range isn’t broad or particularly advanced and the interior is drably styled – but the flaws are easily forgiven when the affordable pricing is taken into consideration. If you’re looking for value, it’s a smart choice. There are three petrol and two diesel engine choices. The basic 1.4-litre 95PS petrol feels dated and is best

avoided, but there is a punchier turbocharged 1.4 with 120PS or, if you need an auto, a 1.6-litre with 110PS. The diesels are likely to be more popular, though. The basic diesel is a 1.3-litre with 95PS. Emissions are 99g/km, while official economy is 76.3mpg – so it’s frugal. But equally economical is the 1.6-litre MultiJet, which produces 120PS and a chunky 320Nm of torque. It’s easily the best engine available in the Tipo, but it’s also the

33

most expensive. It’s also available with a DCT automatic transmission. The Tipo is unremarkable to drive, with a sloppy gear change. But it’s quiet, comfortable and easy to get on with. For dual carriageways, A-roads and town driving there’s nothing to complain about - the steering is nicely weighted and the handling is very predictable. It’s only on a twisting road where a more sophisticated suspension set up would improve comfort - the Tipo can feel unsettled over potholes. Practicality is good. The back row of seats provides enough leg and headroom for adults to sit in reasonable comfort, though the middle row is slightly raised. The boot has a generous 440-litre capacity, but it has a raised load lip that makes loading and unloading heavy or bulky items difficult. The rear seats split and fold, but not completely flat. The entry-level model comes with essentials including air conditioning, DAB radio, Bluetooth, plus USB and aux inputs. Mid-spec Easy Plus mod-

els gain a very small colour touchscreen, rear electric windows, parking sensors, alloy wheels and cruise control, while top trim models get auto lights, auto wipers, climate control, reversing camera and navigation. The Fiat Tipo doesn’t stand out as a particularly remarkable family car, but it feels sturdily made, it’s practical and it is very competitively priced. In that regard it’s a lot like the Nissan Pulsar, which is available with more technology including an excellent 360-degree parking camera, but at higher cost. But if you want no nonsense family motoring the Tipo is just right.

This Week In Automotive History Inventor of First Propelled Mechanical Passenger Vehicle Was Born The man who is credited with building the first known working, self-propelled mechanical vehicle capable of carrying a driver was born this week in 1725. Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot was a French inventor who was trained as a military enginery. He began working in 1765 to develop a steam powered vehicle capable of transporting cannons for the French Army. This led to the 1769 development and running of a small version of a threewheeled “fardier a vapeur, or translated to steam dray. A fardier was a massive two wheeled, horse drawn cart used to transport heavy equipment. In 1770 a full size version was built. On paper it was designed to carry 4 tons and cover 4.8 miles in an hour. The speed was never achieved in practice. The designed featured a third wheel where the horses would normally be which supported the boiler mechanism that powered the vehicle. According to some sources it did move at approximately 2.25 miles per hour. After building a second vehicle in 1771, which supposedly went out of control and knocked over part of an arsenal wall, causing the first automobile accident, the project would be abandoned, as it continued to fall short of necessary expectations. However in 1772 King Louis XV granted Cugnot a pension of 600 livres a year for his innovative work. The vehicle wa kept at the Arsenal until it was moved to the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers in 1800, where it can still be seen today. Cugnot died in Paris in 1804. showroom fame was able to sell 157 of the vehicles. Between 1949 and 1977 21,529,464 Beetles rolled out of dealer showrooms around the world.

Valencia Pledges to Include Swimming Pool in 2017 Budget

By Javeamigos

The long-awaited municipal swimming pool for Xàbia seems certain to become a reality. After many years of broken promises, the president of the Generalitat Valenciana pledged to include its construction in the 2017 budget in a meeting with mayor José Chulvi, Toni Such, the general director of the Local Administration and councillor Paco Torres (Town Planning). The funding from 2017 will finance the tender and design stage of the project whilst the actual construction of the swimming pool will be included in the 2018 budget. Mayor José Chulvi welcomed the news which will mean that the project will become a reality during the current legislature. The decision forms part of a decree law by the regional government to recover those project unfulfilled by the previous government of the

Generalitat Valenciana. Back in 2005, the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia signed an agreement with the Generalitat to build a new trinquet - a special court for Valencian pilota - in exchange for the regional government providing the funding for the building of a municipal swimming pool. The trinquet opened in 2010 but the money from Valencia never materialised. In recent years, the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia has forged an agreement with the Ayuntamiento de Poble Nou de Benitatxell which has allowed registered residents of Xàbia to make

use of the municipal swimming pool of the neighbouring facility at reduced rates, the same as local residents, in exchange for an annual fee. This was

recently renewed and it has been reported that swimmers from Xàbia account for some 85% of total visits to the facility.

Reforestation Plans Announced

By Simon Russell

THE Marina Alta town of Benitatxell was particularly badly hit by the recent devastating fires that raged

across that part of the Costa Blanca earlier this month. The local authorities have been quick to assure people that post disaster plans are

in place and consultation has begun with all parties concerned focusing initially on the regeneration of the La Granadella area which was

the worst hit. Benitatxell mayor, Josep Femenia, has also been enquiring about aid for people effected by the fires

with discussions taking place with the government who control the purse strings for relief. Home owners whose pools were used to fill fire fighting helicopters supplies will also be included in any compensation planning.

Towns Prepare for Autumn Downpours By Simon Russell

THE start of autumn often heralds heavy rainfalls on the Costa Blanca and many towns will be preparing themselves to avoid the flooding that can sometimes be a feature when this does occur. Teulada-Moraira town hall for example have been focusing on clearing the river beds of Les Sorts near the vulnerable Moraira-Calpe

road. This involves cutting back vegetation such as reeds to allow a clear route should the heavy rains finally materialise. Although these downpours can cause problems the continuing low water levels in local reservoirs mean that most councils are hoping for significant rainfall to help replenish dwindling water

Controlling the Cat Population

By Simon Russell

THE Marina Alta municipality of TeuladaMoraira has received provincial government funding to allow it to help manage and control it’s growing feral cat population. The principal preventative measure will be the spaying of cats in the town identified as not having owners. On the education side citizens will be reminded that abandoning animals is both illegal and prosecutable. They are also being asked not

of plastic works by Liliana Ang, “Gritos de placer y protesta” (Shouts of pleasure and protest), is on show at the Ca Lambert until 22 October. If you have had your fill of art the choral group “Las Voices de Gaia” are performing on the 30 September at the Casa la Cultura (entry 5€). For up to date information on these and other events see the website www.xabia.org

The fifth “Oktoberfest TeuladaMoraira” starts on 30 September and runs through to 2 October. Based on the world famous Munich Oktoberfest there is more than just beer at the festival - although organisers expect 3,000 litres of the brew to be consumed. There is music provided by a German band mornings and afternoon and also a disco for the evenings. As you would expect at a Spanish festival, food also features heavily and there will be an assortment of typical German food such as bratwurst, schnitzels and potato salad plus many others. The venue is the parking Les Sorts where a beer tent has been specially erected for the occasion.

Rain fails to Dampen the Sprits at U3A Javea Event By Simon Russell

JAVEA U3A’s recent Spanish Culture and Flamenco Evening proved a great success despite the best efforts of the weather to put a dampener on proceedings. 65 members attended the evening held at the Restaurante Club de Tenis and the dancing was in full swing when the unseasonal rains struck. However things quickly moved indoors and the fun continued unabated although the performers had to

cut short their dance. Another successful event and special thanks must go to group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie who organised the evening. For details of the Culture and Cuisine Group or other U3A Javea activities you can visit their website at www.u3ajavea.org

Local vets are working in collaboration with animal welfare group Pluto and the Alicante veterinary council to ensure that the work is carried out humanely and efficiently. Man Finds 40 Kilo Tortoise Along Road

By Simon Russell

A man driving along the road was more than surprised to see a giant tortoise lumbering along the road near Bigastro in the Vega Baja. He alerted the authorities and the local SEPRONA animal protection service retrieved the tortoise and brought it to safety. Although it is assumed to be privately

owned they have been unable to locate the owner at this stage. However as a protected species paperwork would have been required to legally own the animal. It has been established that the beast is a leopard tortoise that usually lives on the African savannah rather than the roads of Alicante. The tortoise, which weighs in at a hefty 40 kilos, is currently being held at the Raul Merida animal protection centre.

Two Arrested for Robbing Eight Bars in Orihuela

By Simon Russell

The National Police have arrested two Algerian men in Orihuela, aged 41 and 42, who are accused of robbing eight bars and cafeterias in the municipality and its villages. According to police, the pair have been detained 48 times between them for similar incidents and the judge has ordered them both to be sent to prison. Police have been investigating since several robberies were reported at the end of last year and they found out that two people had “frequently” been going to the establishments during

the day and using slot machines while studying characteristics like the places’ alarm systems. When night fell the intruders disarmed the alarms and forced open doors and windows to get inside, where they stole money from the tills and slot machines, as well as cigarettes, alcoholic drinks and even lottery tickets. Police were able to identify the suspects, who they arrested in Orihuela on Tuesday for robbery with force. The officers’ search of their home discovered various electronic devices and a multitude of cigarette packets from the robberies.

Man’s Best Friend Raises Alarm

By Simon Russell

A resident of a house was alerted by his dog barking loudly at 4 o’clock in the morning on September 22 and he surprised four men who appeared

to be stealing from him. The suspects fled in a car that was already waiting for them but quick action by the police intercepted the vehicle almost immediately. The

incident happened in the village of Raiguero just outside Orihuela. The detained are four young men aged between 19 and 22 who will be appearing in court shortly.

Tapas Day Next Week

By Simon Russell

OCTOBER 1, a Saturday, has been earmarked as Torrevieja’s Tapas Day and aims to showcase the rich variety of local cuisines available, explained delegate mayor Manuel Osuna. The event will be held from 12pm to

4.30pm and 7.30pm to 11pm across the town centre and two buses will be especially provided for the event. There will be a set price for a tapa and drink of a very reasonable 2.50€. Osuna hopes that the event will be the first of many if it proves to be a success.

N332 Roadworks to Start Shortly

By Simon Russell

THE Ministry of Development have sent written notification that the plans to convert the N332 running through Torrevieja to a dual carriageway will start shortly. However the town’s mayor, Jose Dolon, has expressed doubts about the wisdom of the scheme. In particular he feels that drainage plans to help

mitigate flooding do not cover all the originally proposed area. At this time he has stated he will not be permitting the works, which require his final approval, until his concerns are addressed. It is understood that the other effected municipalities of Orihuela and Pilar de Hordada have already given their approval for the work to commence.

Military Prepare for Flooding With Simulations

By Simon Russell

Over 300 emergency personnel have been undergoing flood simulation exercises in the Vega Baja. The exercises have been centred on the town of Bigastro although Orihuela, Algorfa and Redovan are all also being used. Bigastro is the focal point as the reservoir at La Pedrera near the town is being used to recreate the conditions of the serious flooding the area saw in the 1980’s. Exercises included mock rescues and searches for “missing” people. The exercise involved 490 people and

144 vehicles from the different security forces. From the soldiers of the Third Emergency Intervention Batallion (BIEM III) to the National Police, Guardia Civil, Alicante Frie Brigade, Navy Diving Centre, Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) and Fire Prevention and Extinction and Rescue Service (SPEIS). The simulation at La Pedrera lasted more than two hours, with the different teams using their equipment to deal with the effects of heavy rain and acting as they would in a real situation.

Modelling Opportunity

By Simon Russell

PORTAL de la Marina shopping centre is looking for models to grace the pages of it’s magazine Stylissimo in December. Selection begins with social networks and progresses to the “real world” further in the selection process. The starting point for any prospective Kate Mosses out there is to register on the centres Facebook page. The only restrictions are that you must be over 13 years old and must register by October 15. A professional panel will look at the candidates pictures online before deciding who moves on to the next phase and Facebook

fans will also have a vote. They are expected to choose 30 candidates for the second stage which is a “virtual photo-shoot“. You need to visit www.facebook.com/ ccportaldelamarina if you are interested.

Pardon Sought for “Rehabilitated” Man

By Simon Russell

WHILE Ondara resident Jose Vicente does not deny he committed an offence seven years ago he feel that both he and his circumstances have changed so dramatically in the meantime that a jail sentence would serve only to punish innocents. Jose is now a happily married man with two young children and a stable job which his family depend on. At the time of the crime, which was selling drugs in a public place, Jose had a serious drug issue himself. He is now fully rehabilitated a fact friends, family and, significantly, drugs testers will

attest to. However under current laws he is still expected to serve a two year jail sentence for the offence which would put everything he has achieved in the last seven years in danger. Nearly 3,000 people have signed a petition of support on the Change.org platform saying Jose should not be imprisoned and his wife has written an emotional letter to the authorities pleading for clemency. However as things stand it appears that Jose Vicente will be imprisoned shortly unless someone in high authority is willing to listen to his pleas.

Villajoyosa Dog Park Set to Open By Simon Russel

VILAJOYOSA’S first park specifically for dogs is due to open in October according to the Department of Parks and Gardens. The enclosure will be situated in a 200 square metre plot next to the Parque Censal near Avenida Generalitat. Facilities will include drinking troughs and a games area for the dogs as well as a shady area

and benches to allow their owners to take the weight off their feet while their four legged friends play. If the inaugural park is judged to be a success there are plans for a second one in the Amadorio area. However the spokesman emphasised that there needs to be an onus on owners to respect the area itself and also respect nondog owners in the area.

Alfaz and Benidorm Now Connected for Cyclists

By Simon Russell By Spencer Williams

AROUND 80 volunteers took the Benidorm leg of the “Clean up the World” campaign to the iconic Benidorm island earlier this month. They collected a total of 300 kilos of rubbish after being ferried out to the island on local vessel “La Golodrina”. Councillor for Citizen Participation Maria Pinto took part and said it was good to see how many citizens were willing to become involved and is confident that as the event grows in profile more will take part each year. The Clean up the World initiative is worldwide and is sponsored and promoted by the United Nations.

Inaugural Gentlemen’s Motorcycle Ride Graces Albir

By Simon Russell

THE premise of the Gentlemen’s Ride is an unusual one, a combination of motorbikes and riders dressed in their best rather than the leather and biker boots you tend to associate with bikers. However it made for an impressive spectacle going through Albir and the vintage look was in favour for both

bikes and riders with over 200 people participating. The cavalcade started out at the seafront and travelled to Vintage Vehicles museum in Guadalest before returning to Albir. Afterwards prizes were awarded to the best dressed gentlemen rider and female companion. The event was actually held

worldwide and the aim was to collect money and raise awareness for men’s health issues such as prostate cancer and suicide. Around 500

cities took part and a total of just under 4.5 million Euros was raised worldwide, making a second event a strong likelihood.

Increased Mobility on the Table For Benidorm BENIDORM’S urban mobility plan which has recently been approved has nothing to do with the “Madge” scooters you see around the town but is an ambitious project to improve the overall flow of traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian. Improved parking is a large part of keeping traffic

flowing smoothly and there are plans to expand the resident blue zone cards scheme to the entire city said councillor Jose Gonzalez de Zarate. He said residents benefited from regulated parking and this would indicate a huge leap forward for all of them as only those who live on certain

streets currently have an entitlement to the cards. Gonzalez de Zarate said

it is hoped a final decision will be made by the end of September.

AROUND 80 volunteers took the Benidorm leg of the “Clean up the World” campaign to the iconic Benidorm island earlier this month. They collected a total of 300 kilos of rubbish after being ferried out to the island on local vessel “La Golodrina”. Councillor for Citizen Participation

Maria Pinto took part and said it was good to see how many citizens were willing to become involved and is confident that as the event grows in profile more will take part each year. The Clean up the World initiative is worldwide and is sponsored and promoted by the United Nations.

Becoming Better Connected

VILLAJOYOSA is expanding and improving it’s fiber optic coverage. The investment is being made by Telecoms giant Telefonica and will see around 10,000 homes and businesses being given fiber optic and 4G capability. The first phase of the work began in early summer and among others includes

the Montiboli, El Paraiso, Sant Antoni and Calle Colon areas as well as the city centre. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017. Wedding Ring Found to be Returned After 37 years

By Spencer Williams

Have You Seen This Man?

A son worried about his father, who was last heard of in Benidorm Old Town, is desperate to locate him. Kevin Steel Mc Carrick (pictured right) also has two Long Haired Jack Russell’s. His son has been in contact with

the British consulate who have helped spread the word of the ongoing search. If anyone has any information please contact the Buzz team or William Steel at HELP International Benidorm on +34 607 387 040.

JESSICA Niso was scuba diving off Benidorm when she discovered the wedding ring in the sand, with the still legible inscription of “Juani” and a date of February 17 1979. With more hope than expectation Jessica posted an appeal on Facebook to try and track down the owner. Remarkably the post came to the attention of Juani Aliaga from Zaragoza who, after proving her ownership (the name Juani was left off Jessica’s Facebook post) is to be reunited with the ring at the end of this month which she lost on her honeymoon. As if further proof were needed the ring was one of a pair and husband Agustin still has his original from their wedding of 37 years ago. To give you an idea

how long the ring was on the bottom of the sea off Benidorm in February 1979 Village People were top of the charts with “YMCA” and the first million pound football transfer deal was made in the UK.

have voted in line with the Valencian Community in general where most schools have opted for the change. The change should come into effect from October 1 - schools that rejected the change will be sticking with the same hours at this time. Some schools will be operating initiatives to help out parents who have difficulty picking their kids up at lunchtime such as a continued canteen service and children’s activities. Check with your local school for the exact details.

Benidorm Schools Support Change to “British” Hours

TEN out of Benidorm’s 13 public primary schools have voted to move to what some are referring to as the more British school hours of 5 continual hours education. This is a major departure from the traditional Spanish school day of 8 hours with a three hour gap in the middle where pupils either stayed for lunch (for a fee) or were picked up from school and dropped back again for afternoon lessons. Fly The Flag - Royal British Legion & Poppy Appeal By Pamela Dawson Tasker BEM

We are living in turbulent times you must agree. There are rumblings abroad and any time our Armed Forces could be called upon. Where we live in peace in Spain there are rumblings of a different kind: a change in our European status could affect us so it is even more important that we as British people work together and support each other and that we fly the flag. Flying the flag in uncomfortable times is what we British do best and one way in which we have stood together and made our mark, helping our people in times when they need it most , is through our welfare organisations. Perhaps the most patriotic , emblematic and longest established here in our apopted country is The Royal British Legion. Our welfare officers are working daily for Legion beneficiaries and are always available with assistance and advice. Through the Poppy Appeal here in Spain we raise the funds that support this work and through the generosity of our expatriates we also have the money to send to the Benevolent Fund in Uk that supports the members of the armed forces injured in conflict and their families and of those who gave their lives. . District North of TRBL Spain covers all Spain apart from the South West covered by District South. We are strongest and best represented on the Costas and our strength and representation is though our branches and through the members of

those branches. It is an honour to be a member of the Legion and to know that we make a valued contribution to the well being of our fellow ex-patriates and to the members of the armed forces wherever they are. Our branches usually have a social side which fund-raises all-year-round as well as the annual PA, helping our public image and attracting new members through companionship. Important though this may be it is Welfare that is the very heart of the Legion’s work. The Launch of the Poppy Appeal Spain 2016 will take place on Friday 14th October in Benidorm , a venue chosen for the high number of tourists and residents in the area and because the local administration at the Town Hall gives us every assistance. It will be a remarkable day with a parade led by the Torrevieja Pipes and drums preceding the honoured guests including two Chelsea Pensioners, the standard bearers of the branches and any person who would like to show their support. We start on the paseo of Levante Beach proceeding at 12 noon from c/ Castelló to the Rincon de Loix where there is a dais for the speakers and seating for observers. With our guest bugler to play the Reveille and the Last Ppst it is always a very emotive occasion.

Alan Phillips triumphed in the Men Singles against fellow Javea Green member Alan Stephens. Last up was the Aussie Pairs with Derek Randall and Jean McLaughlin carrying off the trophy after defeating Matt Tay-

lor and Velia Wood. However there was some consolation for Velia who was awarded the Player of the Tournament after competing in three finals. Thanks go to the sponsors Teletec, Almar Building Services and Lux-Al, organiser Bill Barrie and of course all the competitors and spectators.

LA Liga side Valencia CF have announced that they are parting company with manager Pako Ayestaran after he opened the season with four straight defeats. Ayestaran has only been in the job since March when he replaced Gary Neville who himself only served a short period at the club. A statement from the club said “Following a meeting of the board of directors the club have taken the decision to release Pako Ayestaran from his role as first team coach. The decision was taken after analysing the current sporting situations and results.” In the meantime

Salvador Gonzalez takes over as interim coach although it is expected they will be looking for a high profile manager in charge of what is still one of Europe’s big-

gest football teams. Former Argentina and Valencia star Mario Kempes is one name linked to the role and indeed he has expressed an interest in the role.

Sam Allardyce on the ‘Brink of Being Sacked

England manager Sam Allardyce has been filmed advising undercover journalists on how to circumvent rules against third-party ownership, according to the Daily Telegraph. Video accomanying the report shows Allardyce meeting twice with journalists posing as representatives of a Far East

agency who were interested in bypassing rules from the Football Association and FIFA that prohibit third-party ownership. “You can still get around it. I mean obviously the big money’s here,” Allardyce, who has overseen one match -- a 1-0 win over Slovakia -- as England manager, said on the video,

while also calling the regulations “ridiculous.” The Times reports that Allardyce now faces the sack following the undercover report, with England under-21 manager Gareth Southgate in line to take over as caretaker boss for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia on Oct. 8 and 11 respectively.

McGregor Will Attempt to Make UFC History Conor McGregor will get his chance at becoming the first fighter in UFC history to hold two titles in two weight classes at once, after all. The UFC featherweight champion will challenge Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title in the main event of UFC 205 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Nov. 12. UFC president Dana White announced the bout late Monday night on ESPN’s SportsCenter. Additionally, McGregor will not relinquish the featherweight championship leading up to UFC 205, making the meeting a champion vs. champion superfight. McGregor (203) was scheduled to face then-lightweight

champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 on March 5. But dos Anjos pulled out of the fight a couple weeks in advance due to a broken foot, and Nate Diaz stepped in. Diaz won the bout, which was contested at welterweight, via secondround submission. A rematch, at UFC 202, also at welterweight, was won by McGregor on a majority decision.

Taylor Victorious McLaren Ready to Win Again in Cardiff

Phil Taylor beat Michael van Gerwen for the second time in two days to claim the inaugural Champions League of darts in Cardiff on Sunday. Having downed the Dutchman 10-4 in Saturday’s group stage match, the Power followed it up with a fifth victory of the weekend to claim the title ahead of next week’s World Grand Prix in Dublin.

at the Grand Slam in 2014.

The 16-time world champion was never troubled by world number one Van Gerwen who couldn’t keep pace with an inspired Taylor, who claimed the trophy at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff.

Taylor rolled back the years over the two days culminating in a brilliant performance to overwhelm Van Gerwen, suggesting that the quickfire shorter forms of the game may be his best route back to major titles - his last coming

Kane Injury Boost for Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham have received “very positive” news about Harry Kane’s ankle injury, but again refused to put a timeframe on the striker’s recovery. Kane was stretched off in Spurs’ 1-0 win over Sunderland on Sept. 18, but Pochettino would not say for how long he would be out after an initial scan revealed ankle ligament damage. Initial reports claimed Kane would miss six to eight weeks but, speaking in Moscow ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League match against CSKA, the Spurs manager said: “Half an hour ago, we received the information about the [second] scan. “It’s much, much better than we expected. We are happy, the scan was very positive. We’re very, very happy about this news.

But still we cannot give a time of how long it’ll be to recovery. Kane is one of five senior players who have not travelled to Moscow, including Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Danny Rose, who have hamstring strains. Moussa Sissoko misses out with suspected concussion.

McLaren are ready to win again according to racing director Eric Boullier and Honda say they expect to match Mercedes’ power output in 2017. The Woking team are currently enduring the worst period in their history and haven’t won a race since Jenson Button stood atop the podium in Brazil in 2012. But Honda engine boss Yusuke Hasegawa says it’s their “expectation” that their 2017 power unit will match Mercedes in terms of outright power. Asked by F1 Racing Magazine if McLaren we ready to win again, Boullier replied: “Of course we are. I think we are more than ever.” The Frenchman has overseen a change in philosophy at McLaren since joining the team in 2014, stating they “were an engineering company enjoying an engineering challenge”. But with regulations limiting inseason development, McLaren could no longer engineer their way back to competitiveness if they started the season off the pace. “We had to decide on a concept that we believed would be a winning one and develop it over the years, not just months,” added Boullier.

“That is what Red Bull have been doing for seven years, Mercedes for five years. “When you take an average of all the races, we are fighting with Ferrari in terms of chassis. Red Bull and Mercedes are better than us, but we are the best of the rest.” And if Honda can find a horsepower boost for 2017, then McLaren can be more aggressive in their aerodynamics when the new regulations are introduced next year. “We have to be very efficient aerodynamically. If you bring downforce you can’t bring drag,” said Boullier. In the cockpit there is optimism as well with Fernando Alonso confident he is in the right place to win another drivers’ championship. “We are going in the right direction,” said the Spaniard. A driver from the development ranks will take former Formula One champion Jenson Button’s seat next year, but he is definitely, definitely not retiring. Since Button apparently missed out on 17 years of adult life thanks to his F1 career, he made it clear that “Jenson Button’s going to do what he wants in 2017.”

Buzz World Sport Rory McIlroy Is Peaking Just in Time for Ryder Cup

54

September 28th

He got it right. McIlroy’s stunning approach shot landed on the 18th green and stopped six feet away, leaving McIlroy an eagle putt for a playoff victory and, oh yeah, a $10 million FedEx Cup bonus, while opponents Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore played the par-5 hole more traditionally and laid up. It was the shot of the tournament, or would have been had McIlroy made that putt. It rimmed out. Three playoff holes later, McIlroy finally disposed of the pesky Moore and poured in a winning birdie putt. Everything we need to know about this week’s Ryder Cup, and maybe the pending 2017 golf season, we just learned at East Lake Golf Club. Rory McIlroy is ready. That is not good news for the American squad, as heartening as it was to see the underrated Moore push him to the limit. McIlroy said all that mattered before the 18th green award ceremony and that super-sized payday. “I played really well,” he said. “I feel like my game is coming together at the right time. Two wins in the last three—that’s pretty nice.” In the bigger picture, and it’s not going to get

www.buzznews.es

any bigger until this week’s Ryder Cup is behind us, this recent return to form looms gigantic. It’s not just the two FedEx Cup event wins, or the Irish Open victory this summer. It is the way McIlroy is playing. He resembles the old Rory who, with apologies to the Masters, kinda-sorta-almost resembles Tiger Woods. You saw it Sunday afternoon here. McIlroy played shots that no one else could. Well, certainly not shots that Moore or Chappell had in their arsenals. The shot of the day might have come at the 16th hole in regulation, a par-4 where McIlroy’s approach landed six feet from the hole, took one big hop, then one small hop and politely toppled into the cup for an eagle. The shot was a stunner, and it vaulted him into a tie for second with Moore, one stroke behind Chappell. Judging by Rory’s reaction, he had just won the Ryder Cup’s clinching point. He really, really wanted to win this thing for a lot of reasons – which surely had nothing to do with those 10 million obvious reasons.

FURY TO BE STRIPPED

Tyson Fury looks certain to be stripped of his world heavyweight titles and may never box again, according to Eddie Hearn, a rival promoter, after mental health problems were revealed to be the reason why he pulled out of his rematch with Wladimir Klitschko. Klitschko’s camp disappointingly received a letter from Fury’s doctor saying that he cannot fight on the scheduled

match. According to the doctor, Fury has mental health issues that need to be addressed. And the doctor did not give a definite date for Fury’s return. Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) pulled out of training camp for his scheduled October 29 rematch against Wladimir at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. Hearn said this to skysports. com: “Yes, I do think Fury will be

stripped. It’s been nearly a year since he’s boxed. The governing bodies want that belt to be active so over the next couple of weeks, the contenders will be putting pressure on the governing bodies. We don’t know how long Tyson will be out of the ring for, but the sport has got to go on and the governing bodies will want to get those belts active as soon as possible.”
