After five decades spent slowing down to see the world, Butterfield & Robinson has — after years of experimenting, many ruined laboratories and a stint in the ‘80s spent tearing through the hills of Burgundy in a Delorean — finally perfected time travel. And our break through couldn’t have come at a better time. We’ve been biking and walking since 1966, and with our 50th anniversary upon us, we’re going back in time to celebrate half a century of slowing down to see the world.

MUNICH TO SALZBURG George and Martha Butterfield have spent 50 years leading B&R into the future—making them the perfect (and let’s face it, only) people to lead us back in time. In 2016, George and Martha will travel back 50 years to 1966 in order to meticulously re-create B&R’s very first biking trip through the hills of Bavaria. Well, maybe not so meticulously. We’ve abandoned the one-speed bikes in favour of a shiny new fleet of Bianchis, and the student hostels long ago gave way to some of Europe’s most stunning properties. But the spirit of that first trip to Bavaria remains, from the sweeping mountains, sparkling lakes and timbered houses to the guy named Butterfield leading the way.

George

History Before B&R had 50 years under its belt, traversed six continents, had affairs with over 80 countries (sorry, Canada) and made more friends than we could count, it was a trio of university students: Toronto law student George Butterfield, his high school roommate Sidney Robinson, and his wife Martha Butterfield (Sidney’s sister, of course).
Nowadays, the industry term for the style of travel he pioneered is “active luxury.” While it all worked out pretty well in the end, when you really stop to think about it, George Butterfield had one hell of a nerve.
Like all young Europhiles, they had a dogged determination to be abroad, a love for the food, languages and culture, a sense of adventure, and no money. “We decided the only way we could afford to get back to Europe was to develop a student tour program,” George recalls. “Our idea was to visit great cities, arrange history seminars and spend some time biking and hiking.” It worked, and a company – not to mention an entirely new way to travel – was born. What doesn’t get said, but bears keeping in mind, is just how damn crazy this idea was in 1966.
