From the Editor

The best tool for the best part of Houston Welcome to the 39th edition of The Guide. For some people, it might seem like an antiquated idea to turn to a print guide for a directory of local resources, representatives and other officials. In an age where it seems everything we know is becoming digitized, it can be easy to forget that many of us have access to all of our neighborhood’s information right at our fingertips without having to worry about things like battery life or signal. This year, The Guide featuress a new look in some sections, streamlining in others, and a section dedicated to answering questions regarding JONATHAN GARRIS safety that I’m sure many of you have had at one time or another. The purpose of The Guide, originally, was to help new residents become acclimated to their neighborhoods, discover businesses, find new restaurants and meet a few neighbors along the way. While jumping online and into search engines can be a useful way to gather information, The Guide represents an invaluable tool, particularly for our readers who have only just begun to discover this part of Northwest Houston. Those who have called this area home for years might also find a new place to visit or even answer some burning question they might not have remembered to ask before. All of the best ways to connect with your fellow neighbors and representatives is right here in your hands, without the pain of having to find an electrical outlet to see it. The Guide is also a perfect way for our longtime readers to reflect on the many businesses, organizations, restaurants and officials that have helped make our area the best place to live in Houston. Whether it’s rediscovering an old coffee shop, finding a new church, or learning the name of a community leader, we at The Leader hope you will find everything you need and more in this year’s edition of The Guide.

Meet your neighbors Those living in The Leader communities take great pride in their neighborhoods – something reflected in the various civic groups and community groups across the area. Whether you’re new to the area, looking to get involved, or just have a question, The Guide has you covered. Over the years, civic clubs across Northwest Houston have worked with police to help deter crime, preserve the character of their neighborhoods with the help of deed restrictions and have connected residents with each other at various functions and events. The following is a list of area community groups, civic clubs (and their respective presidents or community liaisons where applicable), local and state officials and where more information can be found. ART AROUND TOWN

“Where can I find art when I’m in Houston?” A terrifying question for some folks. When do we have time to go sightseeing in our own town? I feel qualified to answer without a panic so let me help answer that for you. A quick internet search by name should have everything at your fingertips. We have three nationally recognized art festivals, the Bayou City Art Festival downtown and Memorial park in the fall and spring respectively and up north in April. The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival. The Orange Show’s Art Car Parade, now the second week-

end in April is very artsy. For the daily art seeker, Houston does have a Museum District and on the website, a mere twenty are listed. Gallery Row is the Granddaddy of commercial art gallery spaces, currently nine are listed on their website. Houston is a mecca for art studios and Arts District Houston lists dozens of events and open studios. Sometimes, even I need a source for the unusual and I go to VisitHouston.com. It should satisfy all, with a complete lists of gallery spaces, an extensive events calendar and hidden treasures all over this fine city. No art tour is complete without a visit to The Menil Collection, bring a picnic basket and blanket too, The Menil

has a fabulous lawn. The Houston Heights has always been known for its artists, get lost here. I don’t mind tooting my horn either, the whole reason I’m here, visit First Saturday Arts Market too!

Readers share suggestions for helping kids, parents stumped by homework If you have a school age child, it’s a pretty sure bet you’ve felt your fair share of the homework blues. Whether it’s the material itself or the fact that at the end of a long day, the last thing either of you wants to think about is homework, it can be a battle some days. Never fear - The Leader asked other parents and some area principals for their best tips, both at-home strategies and also outside resources. Stacey Fike said that for her child, she finds that homework is less painful when it is completed immediately after school, whether that is at home or in an after-care program. “Kids are still in ‘student’ mode immediately after school dismisses,” she said. “Having a consistent routine and workspace is ideal.” Emily Zihlman recommends the book Homework without Tears by Lee Canter as great resource. Amanda Woodward suggests using timers and allowing kids to work for a few minutes at a time

“so they don’t feel like they’ve been doing homework all night.” Also if completing worksheets, you might consider folding the sheet in half and doing the top and bottom separately with a break between. A homework reward chart with such perks like longer outside play or picking out dinner is another idea. Principal Tom Day at Travis Elementary encourages parents to stay in contact with their child’s teacher: “If homework is taking your child more time than should reasonably be expected, then the teacher needs to know that. Assignments can be adjusted so that the student gets the benefit of reinforcement of taught concepts without risk of getting frustrated or burning out.” What to look for in a tutor Here’s a good checklist from Dr. Lindsey Pollock at Garden Oaks Montessori: • Be sure the person or company assesses where your child needs help so they can target

those specific areas. • It is best if the tutor is in contact with the teacher and if there is some communication between the two to practice the same strategies.

• Sit in on a few sessions and listen to how the tutor is supporting your child so you can use

Leader schools leading the way to success Some of our area schools Last year HISD’s graduation rate was at an all-time high and $186 million in scholarships were awarded to the class of 2013. Dr. Terry Grier is HISD’s superintendent, and the district is governed by nine trustees of the board of education, elected to four-year, staggered terms from single-member districts throughout the city. HISD is the largest public school system in Texas and the seventh largest in the U.S. Some of the schools in The Leader communities are top performing campuses, many coming from private or parochial schools who offer specialty programs and open enrollment.

Recycling, waste and other disposal options How do I get rid of Tree Waste & Junk Waste?

What sort of options do I have for recycling?

Residents can get rid of their Tree Waste, which is collected during odd numbered months, and Junk Waste, collected during even numbered months, at their curbside. According to the Solid Waste Management Department website, “Tree Waste” is defined as clean wood waste including tree branches, limbs and stumps. Note that lumber, furniture and treated wood is not accepted and junk waste may not be placed for collection during these months – which is January, March, May, July, September and November. Junk Waste is defined as items like furniture, appliances and other bulky items. Residents can also place up to four tires at the curb for collection during these months. Junk Waste months include February, April, June, August, October and December. Waste should be placed adjacent to the front curb between 6 p.m. the Friday before and 7 a.m. on the collection day. The services are also not available to multi-residential structures of more than eight units, according to the SWMD website.

Curbside recycling is currently available to 40,000 homes and an Automated Recycling Program for 211,000 homes. As part of the Curbside program, residents can place newspapers, magazines, telephone books, tin cans and other items in the same 18-gallon bin, collected on a bi-weekly basis. For the Automated program, residents can place unsorted recyclables in a 96-gallon green automated cart with wheels attached. A complete list of recycling service area maps can found online at www. houstontx.gov/solidwaste/recycling.html. Yard trimmings collection is also offered to citizens who receive the Automated Recycling Program. Grass clippings and leaves must be placed in city-approved compostable bags not weighing more than 50 pounds.

How do I get rid of old electronics?

Houston currently offers CompuCycle, a permanent electronic recycling site in the Spring Branch area. The facility, located at 7700 Kempwood,

is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The Kempwood site can also accept common household recyclables. Among some of the items accepted include PCs, servers, keyboards, mice, laptops, game consoles, monitors, small kitchen appliances, printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, projectors, car batteries and cell phones. The facility can be contacted by phone at 713-869-6700.

“Working Hard To Keep Your Trust For Over 27 Years”

Advanced Automotive Technologies For Better Maintenance

As our shopping center gets a face lift, so is YNR! Come see as we transition into a cleaner, more boutique spot to save on all things for your family. Now carrying new cloth diapers, clothes and toys along with pre-owned treasures. Thank you for your continued support!

Back in the “Old days” of “Shade tree” mechanics, a tune up was points, plugs and condenser. Carburetors got overhauled . Fuel pumps required removing 2 bolts and 2 hose clamps. Exhaust was just a muffler. Tires had tubes and regular air. Today we have Check engine lights and Computers that monitor • Engine performance • Emissions • Transmission functions • Catalytic converters • Oxygen sensors • Cooling systems • Crank sensors • Cam sensors • Fuel injectors • Fuel modules • Tire pressure sensors • Mass air flow sensors • Idle air controls and much more..... Cars and trucks have become so much more efficient, sophisticated and complicated that today’s re-

pair shops and technicians have to continuously keep up with training, new diagnostic information, tools and equipment to be able to properly diagnose and service today’s vehicles. At Harting Automotive we work hard to keep up with ever changing automotive technology so as to keep our customer’s vehicles running at peak performance. We have invested in training and tools as needed and will continue as technology changes so we can continue to provide a quality product for our customers. A testament to our commitment to our customer service is reflected by our awards from the BBB Awards for Excellence six years in a row, the BBB Pinnacle Award for 2014 and 100% Customer Satisfaction certificates for eight years in a row from AAA Texas.

Continuing To Provide Our Customer With The Best
