First Lady Michelle Obama in Harlem

First Lady Michelle Obama was in Harlem to bring Let’s Move, the campaign to have children lead healthier lives through better nutrition and exercise, to some New York City children. At Harlem’s Police Athletic League Center, she told kids, “You are our future, that’s why I spent so much time with you guys. Turn off the TV, turn off the video games, put down the potato chips and the candy.”

By Herb Boyd Special to the NNPA from the New York Amsterdam News Except for several minutes behind the microphone extolling the virtues of her “Let’s Move” program, First Lady Michelle Obama was a perpetual blur recently, matching the group of energetic children from P.S. 180 at the PAL facility in Harlem. PAL, according to a press statement, will partner with the schools in the District to enter into shared space agreements in which District #3 schools will send students to the PAL facility for lunchtime physical

fitness activities. In the first year, 225 students will attend lunchtime activities at the PAL Center. The program will also offer after school activities for 225 students, which will include physical fitness, nutrition education, and life skills development. This project will give students from Central Harlem opportunities to take part in a variety of activities designed to improve their health, increase their physical fitness and develop lifelong healthy habits. Dray Joseph would enter and lead SU’s scoring drive. The Tigers extended their 24-10 halftime lead to 31-10 when the first possession of the second half ended with Warren running 16 yards for a touchdown. Warren rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns as Warren, who carried 21 times and scored on

runs of 1, 1 and 16 yards, became the second-leading rusher in Southwestern Athletic Conference history. McGinty was able to return after halftime, but was once again ineffective due to constant pressure fromthe GSU defense, was eventually replaced by Joeph again in the second half. The Jaguars defense, which forced one punt per half, allowed six consecutive scoring drives from midway through the first quarter until halfway through the fourth. Southern’s Dray Joseph and Grambling’s Frank Warren were named Bayou Classic XXXVII MVP’s. Dray Joseph being interviewed by NBC’s Lewis Johnson after the game Offensively for Southern, Jeremiah McGinty led the Jags rushing attack with 48 yards on four carries. Dray Joseph led the Jaguars passing attack, coming off the bench was 11 of 16 passing for 148 yards with one interception, while Jeremiah McGinty completed just two of 11 passes for 21 yards with an interception. Defensively, Levi Jackson recorded and game and career high 14 tackles, while Gary Chatman and Johnathan White each recorded seven tackles. Anthony Balancier and Jordan Miller had five tackles respectively, while Jordan had a season and game high three sacks. Mychal Bell and Steven Williams also recorded one sack each.

USDA from page 1 cal and financial assistance to private landowners and Indian Tribes to restore, protect and enhance wetlands that have been degraded or converted for agricultural uses. More than 80 percent of restorable wetlands are in private ownership. Participation in WRP is voluntary. Estimated to have covered more than 220 million acres during colonial times, wetlands in the lower 48 states are now less than half that amount. Wetland losses in some states are more than 90 percent. More than 40 percent of federally listed species and over 50 percent of migratory birds require wetland habitats during some portion of their life cycle. Through this program, marginal farm or ranchland is restored to its natural state. Potential flood damage to farms and ranches is reduced and vital wetland ecosystems are restored and protected. How WRP is helping farmers. Two Louisiana neighbors in East Carroll Parish were looking for ways to improve their farms operations-both financially and environmentally when they decided to enter their marginal farmland into WRP. The program payments gave them the financial security to invest more funds into their operations for animal health and land improvements. This voluntary restoration effort will continue to improve water quality and enhance habitat for migratory birds in the Mississippi River Basin for years to come. One California landowner in Colusa County signed up for WRP when farming on his flood-prone land was no longer profitable to his operation. WRP provided easement and wetland restoration payments for the marginal farmland that he greatly needed to sustain a profitable operation.

This project provided an opportunity for the landowner to reduce his financial burden, while providing much needed space for waterfowl and other wildlife species; reducing negative impacts from flooding; and increasing opportunities for recreational activities. In Bedford County, Virginia, WRP is helping one farm family address water quality concerns, which will ultimately improve animal health, and enhance wildlife habitat on their livestock operation. A total of 11 acres were enrolled into the WRP, including two vulnerable streams that ran across the property. With technical and financial assistance from WRP, fencing will be installed to prevent cattle access to the wetland area, thus reducing sediments and nutrient runoff into the stream; and native hardwood trees will be planted to enhance habitat for birds and other wildlife. WRP is administered by USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). In fiscal year 2010, NRCS restored 129,000 acres of wetlands on lands enrolled in WRP. NRCS offers WRP enrollment to private landowners and Indian Tribes on a continuous sign-up basis. The agency provides financial and technical assistance to eligible landowners and invests in wetland protection and restoration activities. For more information, landowners can contact their local NRCS Service Center or visit http://www. nrcs.usda.gov/programs/ wrp/. This year represents the 75th year of NRCS helping people help the land. Since its inception in 1935, the NRCS conservation delivery system has advanced a unique partnership with state and local governments and private landowners delivering a conservation based on specific, local conservation needs, while accommodating state and national interests.

Sarah Palin is Everywhere By Judge Greg Mathis NNPA Columnist Very few people outside of Alaska knew who Sarah Palin was when, in 2008, Republican Senator John McCain selected her to be his running mate for his presidential bid. Though many were left confused by the choice, they also had to admit that, on paper, the young governor Palin seemed to be a viable political threat: she worked her way through college, her husband had a bluecollar job, she was raising five children, one with special needs, and her oldest daughter, still a teenager, was pregnant. It seemed that, on many levels, Palin could readily identify with the average American because she was just like them. Slowly, the media began to chip away at Palin’s glossy exterior and most of us saw the truth: she was illprepared for national politics… and that worried us. Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait

to see if she could rise to the challenge; McCain was defeated and President Barack Obama went on to make history. Though she lost in 2008, Sarah Palin didn’t go away quietly. In fact, her profile – along with her income – has increased. This begs the question, “What is she gearing up for, now?” Since hastily resigning from the Alaska governorship in 2009, Palin has been everywhere. First, she took to the internet, sharing her thoughts on various political issues. Then, she made the talk show rounds to promote her new book. She even landed a new job as a political analyst for FOX News. In recent weeks, she debuted a new show on Alaska and announced that she has another book due out. She has, for all intents and purposes, become a bona fide media personality. But, she hasn’t given up See evertwhere, on page 7

A Great Opportunity for Chicago Beyond the Rhetoric By Harry C. Alford Remember the great Black mayors of the ‘70’s, ‘80’s and ‘90’s? What happened to them? Chicago had one of the greatest in Harold Washington. Among others there were Carl Stokes, Michael White, Wellington Webb, Coleman Young, Thomas Bradley, Marion Barry, and the greatest of all, the Honorable Maynard Jackson. The measuring tool to grade these mayors is the economic development created by their platforms and their ability to get through White opposition and political machines trying to fight against any progress. These leaders made Black millionaires and that created hundreds of thousands of jobs within our communities. You can say what you want about Marion Barry but he was truly a friend of Black business. Black entrepreneurs living in D.C. made a ton of money through the leadership of Mayor Barry. One of the recipients was none other than Robert Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET). Marion’s heart was in this and it was his success that alerted the FBI that he had gone off the “reservation”. They harassed and investigated him until they could find something to stick. His real “crime” was bringing economic development through entrepreneurship into Black communities. Power to the recipients is a blessing. Power to the adversaries is considered a major threat. Like Mayors Barry and

Maynard Jackson, Mayor Harold Washington revolutionized his city. He made it clear to all – unions, political machines, Wall Street, and manipulators that a new day had come to the Windy City. His staff had zero tolerance for programs, bids, and proposals that were void of diversity. Chicago is a city of all colors and all colors had better be represented in everything. It shook the political machine to no end. Old man Richard Daley’s times were quickly fading away. Black entrepreneurs from all across the nation, if not the world, were setting up offices in Chicago and employing people from neighborhoods that had been overlooked in the past. Mayor Washington was so passionate about it he hired Maynard Jackson as a consultant to speed things along. It was a treat to watch all of the new offices for Black businesses going up in the Chicago Loop. Some of his procurement offices would have huge trash bins in the bidding rooms. As they received bids and proposals they would immediately thumb through them to view the minority participation section. If it were empty the bid or proposal would go right into that trash bin as the bidder would look on in shock. Yes, Mayor Washington was for real and we should thank God that he came along in his great vision and fearlessness. Today, most Black businesses have a picture of the late Harold Washington on a wall in full view of See chicago, on page 7

Hunger in a Season of Plenty By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist Thanksgiving. I don’t know how many times I moved away from a table, full as I could be with food and fellowship, friendship and renewal. Goodwill abounds with a special sweetness as I offer and accept hugs from friends I’ve not seen in a year. And the food - always food because it is one of the ways that we express love and connection - is bountiful; turkey, greens, mac and cheese, gumbo, chicken, ribs, and yams. Not all at one time, to be sure, but there were a lot of folk that put their foot in some pots this thanksgiving weekend. If I had not already felt fortunate, a report from the Food Research and Action Center puts my bountiful weekend into perspective. While my friends and I ate well, almost 18 percent of Americans said they struggled to afford enough food to feed themselves during the last year. The number who are hungry dropped from 18.6 percent a year ago to 17.7 percent, still one in five Americans cannot afford enough food. Poor people are the most likely to experience food insecurity, and we know who the poor are. They are African American

There are structural reasons that so many are poor, that so many are hungry, that so many are out of work. Even as we manage this recession, there are some who are becoming enriched by the challenges that others face. The Washington, D.C. based Food Research and Action Center deserves kudos for the work they do to keep the issue of hunger out front. This is a season when, for so many of us, our cup runneth over with food, with friendship, with energy. Is it possible that we can share the overflow with those who are hungry and needy, by donating to important causes, by rolling our sleeves up and serving food, and most importantly, by working to change public policy around poverty to ensure that there is more work and that all who work can earn a living wage? If we can’t tackle these issues, how can we push back from a full table in good conscience? Julianne Malveaux is President of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Empowering Black American Parents By Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Jr. NNPA Columnist As we enter the final days of 2010, one of the outstanding issues of the past 12 months is the inadequate education that the majority of African American children and young adults are receiving throughout the United States. All parents, and in particular, African American parents, want the best for their children. Thus, the empowerment of parents around the issues of improving the education of young people in the African American community should remain one of the highest priorities. They say that information is power. Black parents need accurate and timely information about the various options and rights that they have concerning all the educational systems, programs, and institutions available. Having a greater knowledge of how to access better and more effective educational opportunities is critical to parental empowerment. Recently the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Grade 12 Reading and Mathematics National and Pilot State Results

test results to make the case for systemic change. Black parents have to take the lead in demanding effective educational reform locally, statewide, and nationally. There is a growing parental choice movement to improve education standards and academic performance of our children. All children deserve equal educational opportunity. There needs to be a focus where the need is greatest and where the achievement gaps are so glaring and obvious. Low-income and working class Black families are facing increasing hardships economically as well as dysfunctions in too many of the schools in these communities. Yet this educational crisis can be and should be turned around. Our children want and deserve a better chance at life and it begins by demanding and struggling for a better high quality education. Nothing less than the best for our children is acceptable. That is why I have been somewhat encouraged lately to witness Black parents bind together in the different regions of the nation on the questions of parental choice and educational See parents, on page 7

TANTRUM from page 6

Christ from page 6 are sadly mistaken. We all have our phase of life, God has no respect of person. ‘That ye may be the children of your Father in heaven; for the maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on he good, and on the unjust,’ (Matthew 5:46 NKJV), Christ came here on this earth in human form and didn’t have an easy time, so we will not have an easy time, either. We will have to suffer the same as He did. If we don’t suffer, we can ever be like him. When we make a vow and say, “We are going to live saved and follow Christ,” we must hold fast to our commission to Him. Here, Paul listed some things we will go through and things we must endure. WE THEN, as workers together with Him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. ‘For He saith, I heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succored thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Giving an offense in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: But in all things approving ourselves as ministers of God, in patience in afflictions, in necessities, in distress. In stripes, in imprisonment, in tumults, in labours, in watching, in fasting: By pureness, by knowledge, by long-suffering, by

kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the rigth hand and on the left, By honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet all knowing, as dying, and, behold, we live in a chastened, and not killed. As sorrow, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having, and yet possessing all things.’ (2nd Corinthians 6:1-10 NKJV). Many have tried to be like the famous basketball player, and they tried to obtain the same skills he had, but those skills will not save an individual or help him or her get closer to Christ. Christ came here and was persecuted, beaten, suffered severely, went through loneliness and other things, but the most beautiful thing was, after all His suffering, He died, rose from the grave, and went back home to His Father. If we just be patient and endure the mild suffering we go through and continue to walk His way, we will go home to be with Him, when He comes back on that cloud, we want Him to say, “Servant, well done.” ‘As for me, I will see Your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake in Your likeness,’ (Psalm 17:15).

Everywhere from page 4 politics. During the mid-term elections, Palin’s political action committee raised money for numerous Republican candidates, including many Tea Partiers. She traveled the country, campaigning on behalf of individuals whose values she shares. Is she a Media Personality or a Politician? We’re not sure and Palin isn’t talking…yet. The 2012 presidential elections will get underway soon and everyone – friend or foe – is waiting on Palin to make an announcement, one way or the other. She’s hinted that she might consider the job but won’t discuss it beyond that. Perhaps she’s trying to decide whether or not she wants to give up her

new found fame and fortune for the stress of a political run. Maybe she’s aware that more than a few big named Republicans, Karl Rove and Barbara Bush among them, thinks she should “just say no” to presidential politics. Whatever the reason for her reticence in making a decision, we should all be thankful. The one good thing about Palin’s increased media exposure is that more and more people, including those in her own party, are beginning to see that she is not presidential material. Here’s to hoping that Mrs. Palin continues to grow her media empire, enjoying fame and fortune beyond her wildest dreams, and stays out of national politics.

refreshing. They must bust up the political machine that Mayor Richard Daley is leaving. A strong Black candidate must step forward and win the hearts of all Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and a good representation of Whites. This activity must not fall into the trap of multiple Black/Hispanic candidates that will split the vote into miniscule numbers for each candidate and give the office back to the machine by default. Chicagoans, you need to get your act together. Right now your economy is in a “funk” especially from a Black perspective. It doesn’t have to be and the solution is clear. Out vote the opposition and bring a strong leader forward. A leader that knows Chicago, loves Chicago, and will serve in a way that would make Harold Washington smile down on you from his place in Heaven. Find that candidate and work for him like you did 30 years ago. Your future depends on it. Mr. Alford is the co-founder, President/CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce®. Chicago from page 4 visitors. It is the first picture you notice in Congressman Danny Davis’s office. He, like so many other current Black leaders, has been blessed to have known him and learn so much from his wisdom and courage. When Mayor Washington suddenly passed away things started to slowly go in reverse in Chicago . They have been in reverse ever since. Today, the Windy City may give up 2% of its business to Blacks despite there being a 25% minority goal on all procurements. What we have today is wholesale fraud, lies, and political deceit. Chicago Public Schools, O’Hare and Midway Airports, public works, and transportation are a playground for corruption, void of Black participation. Almost daily there are articles in the local papers about front companies and misrepresentations in the name of diversity. Chicago is in need of a mayor that can emulate Harold Washington. It should be easy to do as it is a majority/minority city. Blacks and Hispanics alone are 54% of the city’s population. What is needed is a strong political campaign with the vision of empowerment for all of Chicagoans. That would be so

“Now Gulf seafood is coming back on the menu, so come on down, we’re open for business.

Making This Right Beaches Claims Cleanup

Bryan Zar Co-owner, Restaurant des Familles Crown Point, LA

I grew up bussing tables at this restaurant. Last year, my wife, Brooke, and I bought it. We were working hard to build a business, then the spill hit. BP said they would try to make things right. But how was an energy company going to help our restaurant?

Economic Investment

Environmental Restoration Health and Safety Wildlife

Keeping Businesses Open We figured they would tell us to take a number and wait in line.Instead, they asked us if we could serve food to the workers, engineers, scientists, and local residents they had hired to cleanup the spill. It kept us busy round the clock. And we weren’t the only ones. They hired a lot of local businesses and kept a lot of people working. They have kept businesses up and down the Gulf open and it’s still making a difference. Open for Business BP asked us to share our story with you to keep you informed. Our restaurant’s open six days a week. Customers are filling our restaurant again and we think it’s a good time to come down to the Gulf Coast. And if we could make just one request, please think of us when planning your next vacation. We’re still here and while it’s been tough, we are still cooking. And we are just one of the hundreds of great places ready to welcome you when you come down. So don’t wait. We’re looking forward to seeing you.
