When you watch a period movie, don’t you love it when people get messages through messengers and mail? Even in new movies, you sometimes wonder, “Why didn’t they just call? Or text?” Before realizing the movie is set in pre-cell-phone days. But a letter is different from a call or a text, especially today. It means someone took the time to gather their thoughts and compose and send a message. I love to send real letters in the mail because I love to go to my mailbox and find one. And in these days of electronic work communication it’s fun to find a personal message in email, too. BSRI Thrift Store Manager Mike McGurn and I were both lucky recipients of recent emails of a personal nature. After a recent Thrift Store Throwback column, two Brunswick Senior Buzz readers reached out with tales of their own experiences at Atlantic City’s Steel Pier. You can read highlights of those fun messages on page 11. Ultimately the work of those who contribute to the Buzz is to inform and entertain you, the reader. And we love it when a story touches you enough that you want to tell us about it. Keep those cards and letters coming, kids! Shelagh Clancy Editor, Brunswick Senior Buzz Newsletters.bsri@gmail.com

uly 24th was a hectic, busy day at the Southport center, as usual. I was in the middle ballroom breaking down tables from bridge to prepare for an exercise class when it happened. Jackie, my assistant director, came running in, saying we had a situation in the dining room that I needed to handle. My heart stopped. What in the world had happened? Was someone sick or hurt? Was there an altercation? My head was spinning with concern, not knowing what I was walking into. I rounded the corner and rushed into the dining room, only to encounter tons of smiling faces and shouts of “Surprise!” As it turns out, Tuesday, July 24th was my one-year anniversary with Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. Wow, talk about time flying! As I looked around the room at all of the smiling faces that make my day complete, I was overwhelmed by emotion and welled up with tears. There were balloons that

spelled out “Congratulations” and a huge cake with the BSRI logo on it. There were also two men there I did not recognize. One was from PAWS Place and the other was from SOAR, both local animal rescue organizations. Southport Center participants recently gathered quietly to create a surprise for Director Melissa Catlett. The group celebrated Catlett’s one-year anniversary with a surprise party.

People were chanting “Speech, speech!” At a complete loss for words, I said, “Thank you so much for letting me stay here a whole year!” I said a few other things to the crowd of people in there, received lots of hugs, and in a whirlwind we all ate delicious cake and reminisced about the past year.

Thank you to infinity to our Southport staff: Jackie Knott, Beverly Bridgers, Amber Ramsey, Vaughn Hatley, and Dean Francisco. You guys are truly a dream team. In only one year, we have had some major gains and some pretty tough losses as well. Somehow, we have gotten through it all together.

Did you know that BSRI has a Prescription Assistance Program? It can help you save money on your generics and brand name medications. There are 292 drug assistance programs through manufacturers offering medications at no cost, based on household income. The qualifying

incomes vary based on the medications. If you are making trade-offs between paying for your drugs, food, lights, or rent, please contact Marilou Smith for an application, by appointment only, (910) 754-2300 ext.1206.

Starting in September, members of the Medical/Treatment Providers SubCommittee of the Brunswick County Opioid Addiction Task Force will offer quarterly training sessions on opioids. “Understanding Opioid Medications” will be offered at all Brunswick County Senior Center locations and is open to all members of the community. The first session will be offered at 10 a.m. Sept. 21 at the Brunswick Center at Supply. See the announcement boards for scheduled days and times at your center. Participants will learn practical information about

opioid narcotics, what they are, and how to use them. Speakers will teach the importance of storing them safely. The possibility of overdose is a large problem for opioid users. Participants will learn about the drug naloxone (Narcan), which reverses an opioid overdose, and how to administer it in an emergency. Information on pharmacies in Brunswick County participating in a special North Carolina program for purchasing Narcan will be distributed. Participants will also receive an information sheet for opioid treatment resources. Join us to receive this valuable information. It may save the life of someone you love!

By Mike McGurn Thrift Store Operations Manager Do you remember these Pepsi ads from the 1950s? The BSRI Thrift Store recently received a collection of magazine advertising from the 1950s. While each ad was dated, either on the ad itself or by hand on the protective covering, there is nothing to identify the publication in which they appeared. They may be from Life Magazine or another large publication. Has anyone seen these before, and if so, do you remember what magazine they were in? Let us know if you do! Contact Mike McGurn at mmcgurn@bsrinc.org or (910) 712-6458 or Buzz Editor Shelagh Clancy at newsletters. bsri@gmail.com. Two Buzz readers recently shared their memories of Atlantic City, N.J.’s Steel Pier, featured in July’s issue of the Buzz. Here are excerpts from their letters.

1958

“I grew up in N.J. and we were only an hour from Atlantic City so we often went down. One of my best memories is of the high diving horse. It was a mighty animal. A toned woman in a swimsuit donned a helmet and mounted the horse and they ascended the many steps to a diving platform. When they reached the top she and the creature seemed to size up their surroundings. A hushed crowd looked on with anxious anticipation. And then, sure enough, they jumped and splashed into their pool. The crowd cheered, whistled and stomped.” Pat Williamson Volunteer at the Leland Center “Spent a summer in late 60s (sophomore year of college) on the N.J. Shore and went to the pier several times with my girlfriend, now wife. Steel Pier admission was $2. The main theater would show movies, followed by several Ed

Sullivan show type acts: a comedian, juggler, ventriloquist, magician, etc. That would be followed by the featured musical act. For best seats you went when the earlier acts were playing. If you paid an extra 25 cents, you could sit in the first 20 rows. We saw Smokey Robinson, 4 Tops.... One time, Frank Sinatra Jr. was playing with a big brass band. At the end of the pier they had a high diving act. Now dark and under the lights. Divers would dive through a large square hole in the middle of the pier deck into the Atlantic Ocean between the pier’s piling doing all sorts of flips twists and turns. Still on the same $2.25 was the grand finale of the show. The famous high diving horse…. I would have paid $10 at that time some 50 years ago just to see that. Great memories, great summers on the Jersey Shore!” Steve Simon

Overflow crowds celebrated the grand opening of the new Brunswick Center at Calabash July 27 and the center officially opened for business July 30.

The Brunswick Center at Calabash is right on the main drag at 10050 Beach Drive. There’s plenty of parking on the left side of the building. With 12,000 square feet, there’s now room for a large kitchen, a dining and activity room, and smaller conference rooms that will

host Tai Chi, yoga, arthritis, Pilates, arts and crafts programs, and office space for staff. There will also be bingo. “What a wonderful place, convenient and awesome,” Director Angelique Carlson said. “There’s been huge community support. We got 700 applications in three days.”

Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. President and CEO Jim Fish planned for 400 at the Calabash Center grand opening. “The seats were full and a crowd stood at the back,” he said, “and people came in all day.”

Above: BSRI President and CEO Jim Fish discusses the new Brunswick Center at Calabash with guests including Finance and Audit Committee member Carol Santavicca at the grand opening ceremonies July 30. Below: The main activity room at the new Center also serves as a dining room.

“Previously, senior center activities were held at the Presbyterian Church [in Calabash] for many, many years,” Fish said. “The church was very good to us to hold activities for seniors.” The new space, once a Tru Value hardware store and later The Marketplace (also known as Jack’s Place), allows for a full-time center that’s open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. One room houses exercise equipment such as stationary bikes and a universal gym (new treadmills are on the way). In the art room, solar tubes bring in natural light. There’s a huge fish tank and an inhouse florist, the Briar Patch. “It smells so good when Gigi opens her doors,” Carlson said.

“I like the potential of the site— the land,” CEO Fish said. “This is a blank canvas, open to gardening and other outdoor activities. We hope as the Calabash center matures, we can incorporate local food into our

vision.” The site has nearly 4.75 acres. An overhang on the left side of the building provides easy access to the kitchen for Meals on Wheels volunteers. Daily dining will be cooked in Shallotte for now, and food prep will move to Calabash center in the future. The new center is serving five times the number of

meals they previously served, Mike Blandino said. Offices and activity rooms may be rented by outside groups for events, weddings, birthday parties, card games, and other occasions. The multipurpose room can accommodate up to 350 people. A full kitchen is available for catering. If you are interested in renting space in the center, call Debra Marlowe at (910) 754-2300. Bell Peppers: A Vegetable and a Condiment By Joan Leotta Although hot peppers are better known for their uses as condiments, sweet bell peppers also provide a great, though very different flavor profile to meals—main dishes, side dishes, sauces, stews, and more. Adding the flavor of summer to winter stews is as easy as slicing and freezing some of the large supply of bell peppers now in local farm markets and groceries. One of the advantages of this largesse is usually a lower price. However, there are only so many stuffed peppers, sliced peppers with dip, and pepper rings on top of other salads that one can delightfully crunch. Stuffed peppers, peppers and onions with sautéed sausages or chicken strips will bring that flavor to the table with peppers starring, but there will still be more peppers than I will want to use in the short time span of the autumnal abundance.

Fortunately, it’s easy to preserve peppers for use later. Simply wash, dry, slice and save the peppers in a plastic bag or other airtight container so that they will be ready to add flavor and vitamins to your winter meals. The closer to picking time you get them into the freezer, the better-preserved the vitamin content will be. And peppers do pack a vitamin punch. Bell peppers are low in calories and are excellent sources of vitamins A and C, potassium, folic acid, and fiber. Green peppers, the most common and cheapest variety, are picked before they are ripe. Red and yellow peppers, bright and colorful, are the same pepper left longer on the vine to ripen. The increased sunshine time means that compared to their green bell peppers brethren, the red ones have almost 11 times more beta-carotene and 1.5 times

more vitamin C. Yellow falls in between. Flavors differ as well, an important consideration when using them to flavor soups, stews, sauces, and more. Green peppers are grassy, brassy, bright. Some find them harsh. Yellow and red peppers are outright sweet. You can preserve them all with that same freezer protocol. The one downside of freezing peppers to use later, whether in strips, halves, or whole, is the mushy texture they assume upon defrosting. However, although the crunch has fled, the flavor remains full and in this more humble, pulpy state, you don’t have to worry about cooking the other ingredients longer in order to get the peppers to soften.

I like green peppers added to stews, mixed with sautéed meats, added to mushrooms to make a quick pasta dinner, and in my red sauce. I learned that trick in Malta where they use green pepper regularly in the tomato sauce. When adding red pepper pieces to a dish, remember they are sweet. Bits of roasted red pepper, cut up, are also known as pimento and are the basis of the wonderful Southern delicacy pimento cheese.

September is a great time to freeze peppers, since they are plentiful and cheap. Just slice and freeze for a fresh taste of summer all winter long.

The recipe on the next page will get you started on inventing your own ways to use these wonderful vitamin-laden little veggies in winter meals.

Fall is the Best Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs By Pat Naughton

By Donna Ruth Morgan Buzz readers picked the categories of historical fiction, mystery, and thrillers for review. These Pulitzer Prize winners are available through the Brunswick County Library System. All the Light We Cannot See (2014) by Anthony Doerr weaves the stories of two teens, a 16-year-old blind French girl and a 17-year-old brainwashed German boy. Mr. Doerr’s multilayered, good-versus-evil plot explores physical and spiritual blindness and juxtaposes brutality with humanity in the midst of danger and intrigue. this reader, elegant prose did not overcome confusing storylines and a less-than-satisfying conclusion. Nutshell review: Too long, too disjointed, and too predictable to be prizewinning historical fiction. Adam Johnson’s 2012 mystery, The Orphan Master’s Son, peers inside the North Korean state through the eyes of main character Pak Jun Do, a castaway who, in theory, is not an orphan and constantly reminds the reader of this fact. He is treated like an orphan and given a name from a list of martyrs and ends up becoming a loyal subject turned professional kidnapper. His overlords are capricious, violent, and unforgiving, yet Jun Do overcomes brutality with his personal alliances and his limited hope for a better future. The Sympathizer (2016) by Viet Thanh Nguyen is the narrative confession of a half French, half Vietnamese double agent: a Viet Cong communist serving in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. He describes himself as “man of two minds” caught between conflicting political beliefs and personal loyalties. The book is chock full of plotlines, characters, and excruciating detail that offer an Eastern perspective on the Vietnam War and social changes in America in the 1970s. It seems written more for the critics than pleasure readers like me. Nutshell review: Touted as a thriller, even a brilliant conclusion could not overcome the many salacious details and pretentious language.

Taking a Look Back… Our July Monthly Outing to The Wilson Center of CFCC. Thank you to Matt, Zach, and Kathleen for showing us around!

A big “THANK YOU” to Linda’s Line Dancing Class for raising enough money to purchase a grill for our next Center at Leland Cookout!

Senior Spotlight Meet Gladys! “Be kind to everybody. Whatever you do in life, make it good. Never hold grudges. When things are bad, know they will get better.” Just a few words from our Center at Leland Participant, Gladys Womersley. Gladys is the perfect example of someone who “practices what she preaches” and these words of wisdom are just a reflection of the love and positivity she spreads to all who are fortunate enough to know her. Born in Maryland in 1927, retired as a Secretary for the Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C., and a loving wife and mother of three, Gladys has experienced a full and wonderful life. In 2016, Gladys moved to Leland and became involved at the Leland Center. She enjoys meeting new people and taking part in activities such as: Bingo, Chair Aerobics, Geri-Fit, Strength and Core, and Balance Classes. She believes that when you stay active and social, it brings light to your life. She is so grateful for her local Senior Center and the community of people who make her days brighter. Thank you for being a part of our BSRI Center at Leland Family Gladys! We are lucky to have you!

A total of 3,229 people died in the attacks on the Twin Towers in NY, the Pentagon in DC, and the plane that crashed in PA. Then-President George W. Bush is quoted as saying: “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” God, Bless America and Keep Us Safe! Left: Twin Towers Memorial at Ground Zero, World Trade Center, Manhattan, NY. Monthly Joke: Did you hear the joke about Labor Day? It doesn‟t work for me.

The Food Pantry at Shallotte needs donations of shelf stable food items. For more information, call BSRI Food Service Manager, Tammie Mullis, 910.754.2300 ext.1003. What Foods are “Shelf Stable”? Foods that can be safely stored at room temperature, or "on the shelf," are called "shelf stable." These nonperishable products include jerky, country hams, canned and bottled foods, rice, pasta, flour, sugar, spices, oils, and foods processed in aseptic or retort packages and other products that do not require refrigeration until after opening. Not all canned goods are shelf stable. Some canned food, such as some canned ham and seafood, are not safe at room temperature. These will be labeled "Keep Refrigerated." Source: USDA.gov/food safety. Exercise Equipment Demonstration by Angela Ruel, Fitness Instructor, on Wednesday, Sept. 12th and Sept. 26th at noon. Angela will show you how to properly use the equipment we have at the center so that you get the maximum benefit while minimizing any potential for injury from using the equipment incorrectly.

Beginning in September, Shelley Riffel will conduct a “Boot Camp” on Wednesdays at 11am. This is a physical training program designed to build strength and fitness through a variety of group intervals and is fee-based at $5. Shelly is also adding another of her popular Tabata classes on Mondays at 11am. This class is also feebased at $5 and begins in September.

A thought about the fall season: While spring rejuvenates and clears our heads of winter‟s cobwebs, and summer energizes and propels us into vibrancy, fall offers a special gift of its own: a time for relaxing, reflecting, giving thanks, and sitting still, as this quote extols: "Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn." Elizabeth Lawrence. So, sit a bit. Be still for a while. Breathe deeply and enjoy the act of being alive.
