KANT en Brugge zijn één. De stad koestert haar gerenommeerde positie in de wereldgeschiedenis van de kant. Musea Brugge beheert een belangrijke collectie traditionele kant. In KANTLIJNEN worden kant en het kantverhaal vanuit een originele invalshoek in een actueel daglicht geplaatst. De curatoren Hedwig van Onna en Hanneke Kamphuis bieden een cultureelantropologisch festijn met artistieke inslag, analoog met de tentoonstelling ‘Ander kant’ in het Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen te Rotterdam, in 2OO6 door hen inhoudelijk vormgegeven. Het Brugse concept sluit aan bij wat de kantverzameling in Brugge en de designwereld die zich door kant laat inspireren anno 2OO8 te bieden hebben. KANTLIJNEN weeft een actieve kunstroute door de stad en werkt thematisch. Ieder museum, iedere locatie op dit parcours laat de bezoeker nadenken over de maatschappelijke betekenis en interpretatie van kant vroeger en nu. LACE and Bruges are synonymous. This city cherishes its celebrated position in the international history of lace. Musea Brugge holds a major collection of traditional lace. In THE FACE OF LACE, lace and its story are put in a contemporary light, from an original angle. The curators Hedwig van Onna and Hanneke kamphuis are offering a culturalanthropological feast with an artistic slant, analogous to the ‘Ander Kant’ exhibition at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam in 2OO6, whose content they gave shape to. The concept in Bruges links up with the Bruges lace collection and the inspiration the design world takes from lace in 2OO8. THE FACE OF LACE weaves an active and thematic art route through the city. Every museum and other location on this route gives the visitor occasion to reflect on the social significance and interpretation of lace past and present. Tijdens Kantlijnen ontmoeten topstukken van de historische kantverzameling van het Bruggemuseum ontwerpen van jonge mode- en productvormgevers en kunstenaars. Voor het eerst sedert jaren wordt deze top of the bill van de kantcollectie getoond aan het publiek. Bezoekers maken een reis door de pracht en praal van ruim drie eeuwen traditionele kant. De huidige design die zich op kantpatronen baseert, reikt veel verder dan werken met textiel en draden alleen. De geometrisch-abstracte elementen en de decoratieve patronen van het kantwerk worden als inspiratiebron benut. Aan het aspect constructie wordt dan ook ontegensprekelijk een belangrijke functie toegekend. In het Bruggemuseum-Gruuthuse wordt een bijzondere plaats toegekend aan de Miss Blackbirdy collectie van modeontwerper-illustrator Merel Boers.

Dentelle & Design confronte les pièces maîtresses de la collection de dentelle historique du Bruggemuseum à des créations contemporaines de jeunes stylistes, designers et artistes. C’est en exclusivité que les chefs d’œuvre dentelliers que possède la ville seront à nouveau accessibles au public. Au fil de la splendeur de la dentelle traditionnelle, les visiteurs effectueront un voyage sur trois siècles. Le design actuel qui se laisse inspirer par les patrons de dentelle dépasse largement le cadre du simple textile et de l’agencement de fils. Car le caractère géométrique et abstrait de ces patrons de dentelle décorative constitue une riche source de créativité contemporaine. L’aspect construction est donc mis en évidence. Le BruggemuseumGruuthuse accorde une place toute particulière à la collection Miss Blackbirdy du créateur de mode et illustrateur Merel Boers.

In The Face of Lace, some of the highlights of the Bruges museum’s historical lace collection will be shown alongside pieces by young fashion and product designers and artists. This is the first time in years that this pick of the lace collection has been shown to the public. Visitors journey through the splendour and magnificence of at least three centuries of traditional lace. The contemporary designs, based on lace patterns, extend far beyond the use of textiles and thread alone. The geometric-abstract elements and the decorative patterns of the lace are used as a source of inspiration. Great importance is thus undeniably attached to the construction aspect. A special place in the Gruuthuse Museum is being given to the Miss Blackbirdy collection by the fashion designer and illustrator Merel Boers.

Deze vorm van liquid architecture komt als masterpieces in museale displays volledig tot recht. Sonumbra 2 van Loop. pH en Serena, een installatie van Tamar Frank en Rudolf Nottrot, bevestigen de quote van JeanCharles de Castelbajac: ‘er is geen grens tussen modeontwerp, design en kunst. De verbindingsader tussen de drie is muziek.’ Deze vier aspecten zijn in Kantlijnen, die fantastische ontmoetingsplaats van gedeelde passies, aanwezig. Net voor de kerk is de Kingdom van Dylan Graham te zien. Het werk is overladen met ornamentiek die doet denken aan historische gebeurtenissen ten tijde van de Verenigde OostIndische Compagnie. De tentoonstelling belicht het luik licht en reflectie van Kantlijnen. De kleine opstellingen van designlampen met kantachtige karpetten creëren intieme ruimten die bijdragen aan het transparante, ijle karakter. In de binnentuin zijn twee kunstinstallaties opgesteld, speciaal ontwikkeld voor Kantlijnen.

This exhibition looks at the light and reflection element of The Face of Lace. The small displays of design lamps with lace-like rugs create intimate settings that add to its wispy, transparent nature. In the inner garden stand two art installations made specially for The Face of Lace.

Onderweg naar het dak van Brugge ontdekt men een schat aan designstoelen. Conform de architectuur en het trappenspel van het adembenemende monument wordt in dit onderdeel van Kantlijnen de klemtoon gelegd op het lijnenspel van kant. De tentoongestelde draadstoelen ogen onverwoestbaar én breekbaar tegelijkertijd.

Het Bruggemuseum-Volkskunde blijft de oorspronkelijke missie van het museum trouw. Traditionele volkscultuur inenten met actuele volkskunde vormt een deel van de opdracht. Kantlijnen laat hier typisch volksculturele, kantgeïnspireerde werken flirten met gewaagd, hedendaags design. Kantprenten versus design met ornamenteel-ludieke knipoogjes. De binnentuin wordt overspoeld met kalkgeverfde kantpatronen van de hand van kunstenaar Alphons ter Avest. Eigenlijk zijn het uitvergrote antimakassars. Ze zijn ook te zien nabij de Sint-Janshuismolen.

On the way up to the roof of Bruges, you will come across a treasure trove of design chairs. In tune with the architecture and variety of staircases in this breathtaking monument, in this part of The Face of Lace the emphasis is on the linear aspect of lace. Threaded chairs displayed here look both fragile and indestructible.

The Bruggemuseum-Volkskunde remains dedicated to its original mission. Part of its assignment is to inject some contemporary folklore into traditional popular culture. As part of The Face of Lace, lace-inspired works from typical popular culture flirt with daring contemporary designs. Lace prints versus design, with playful, ornamental touches. The inner garden is overrun by whitewashed lace patterns by the artist Alphons ter Avest. They are actually blown-up antimacassars. Some can also be seen near the St. John’s House mill.

Dans son ascension vers le faîte de Bruges, le visiteur s’attarde sur des chaises design pour le moins surprenantes. En symbiose avec l’architecture monumentale de l’escalier en colimaçon, l’accent est mis ici sur le jeu de lignes caractéristique de la dentelle. Les chaises de fil symbolisent simultanément la solidité immuable de l’assise et la délicate fragilité de l’ouvrage.

Le Bruggemuseum-Volkskunde reste attaché à la mission première d’un musée. Sa tâche consiste entre autres à injecter dans la culture populaire traditionnelle de l’art populaire contemporain. Dentelle & Design expose ici des œuvres dentellières populaires qui se laissent conter fleurette par du design audacieux. Images religieuses, dont les contours ajourés évoquent la dentelle, et créations osées se font des clins d’œil ludiques. Les murs du jardin intérieur se couvrent de napperons géants dessinés dans la chaux par l’artiste Alphons ter Avest. Vous les verrez aussi auprès les moulins à vent sur les anciens remparts de la ville.

Vanaf 11 november 2OO8 wordt de gevel van de middeleeuwse Gentpoort ’s avonds feeëriek verlicht met kantpatronen. Het monumentale architectonisch ensemble betovert de argeloze voorbijganger met een feestelijk, clair-obscur kantpatroon.

A partir du 11 novembre 2OO8, la façade médiévale de la Porte de Gand s’illumine tous les soirs de motifs féériques. Le majestueux ouvrage architectonique surprend et enchante le passant ingénu par son clair-obscur de dentelle festive.

The Sint-Janshuismolen (177O) (St John’s House Mill) and the Koeleweimolen (1765) are together part of Musea Brugge. Both of these windmills have been preserved intact and are still used to grind grain. For The Face of Lace, Joep and Jeroen Verhoeven of ‘Demakersvan’ have created a woven lace enclosure around the two mills in metal wire coated in white PVC. This ‘Lace Fence’ makes reference to both the history of mills in Bruges and to the baker’s craft. It is notable that an increase in scale has become one of the features of the new lace-inspired works. While traditional pieces of lace are mainly small and always very delicate, the new designs are much bigger and require breathing space. Le Sint-Janshuismolen (177O) et le Koeleweimolen (1765) sont la propriété de Musea Brugge. Ces deux moulins à vent sont restés intacts et en parfait état de fonctionnement pour moudre le grain. Joep et Jeroen Verhoeven van Demakersvan ont créé pour Dentelle & Design des barrières de fil métallique recouvert de PVC blanc qui encerclent les moulins comme un ourlet de dentelle. “Lace Fence” fait référence à l’histoire brugeoise des moulins et de la boulangerie. Une fois encore, le surdimensionnement caractérise les œuvres contemporaines inspirées par la dentelle. Alors que les pièces de dentelle traditionnelle sont le plus souvent de petite taille et exhale une impression de délicate fragilité, le nouveau stylisme dentellier s’exprime dans des objets volumineux requérant beaucoup d’espace.

Sint-Janshuismolen/Koeleweimolen Kruisvest, 8OOO Brugge De Sint-Janshuismolen (177O) behoort samen met de Koeleweimolen (1765) tot Musea Brugge. Beide windmolens zijn intact bewaard en fungeren nog steeds als graanmolens. Joep en Jeroen Verhoeven van Demakersvan creëren voor Kantlijnen rond beide molens gekantkloste hekkens in wit PVC gecoate metaaldraad. Deze ‘Lace Fence’ refereert naar de Brugse molengeschiedenis en het bakkersambacht. Het is merkwaardig hoe schaalvergroting ook een kenmerk is van de nieuwe kantgeïnspireerde werken. Zijn de traditionele kantstukjes hoofdzakelijk klein en altijd zeer fragiel, de nieuwe design is veel groter van volume en vraagt ruimte om zich heen.

From 11 November 2OO8 the facade of the mediaeval Gentpoort will in the evening be enlivened by enchanting illuminations. This monumental architectural ensemble captivates the unwary passer-by with a festive chiaroscuro lace pattern.

Het designobject van Tjep. oogt ludiek en sprookjesachtig. Het speelt met patronen die door de kantwereld worden aangereikt. Praktisch functioneel is het niet, op decoratief vlak bereikt het des te meer zijn doelstelling.

Transparant kantdesign is verwerkt tot een leesbare plattegrond van de stad Brugge. Het ontwerp combineert bevreemdende functionaliteit met een decoratieve identiteit. De kaart is als kantwerk buiten alle proporties. De fijnste details – monumenten, steegjes en straatnamen worden machinaal geklost tot een artistiek eindproduct.

Cet objet design de Tjep., à la fois ludique et féerique, se joue des patrons utilisés pour la dentelle. Loin d’avoir une quelconque fonction pratique, il en revêt d’autant plus une valeur hautement décorative.

Le jardin du Groeningemuseum se prête idéalement aux créations de “papier peint” Outdoor Wallpaper type Damask de Susan Bradley. Douze modules aux motifs ornementaux répétitifs cassent la monotonie des murs du jardin intérieur. Outdoor Wallpaper illustre également le surdimensionnement du design dentellier destiné à des sites à l’extérieur. L’impact de ces œuvres est donc résolument monumental.

The design object by Tjep. looks playful and fairy-like. It plays about with patterns that derive from lace. It is not functional or practical, but as a result achieves its decorative aims that much more.

The garden of the Groeningemuseum is the perfect setting for the Damask Outdoor Wallpaper design by Susan Bradley. Twelve modules of repetitive patterns shake up the monotony of the walls of the enclosed garden. Outdoor Wallpaper also makes use of the increase in scale that is characteristic of The Face of Lace in public spaces. Lace design for outdoor locations requires a monumental impact.

De tuin van het Groeningemuseum leent zich perfect voor het designontwerp Outdoor Wallpaper type Damask van Susan Bradley. Twaalf modules met repetitieve kantpatronen doorbreken het monotone karakter van de muren van de binnentuin. Ook Outdoor Wallpaper maakt gebruik van het schaalvergrotingsaspect van Kantlijnen in de openbare ruimte. Kantdesign voor buitenlocaties eist een monumentale impact.

A transparent lace design is transformed into a legible street-plan of the city of Bruges. The design combines a peculiar functionality with a decorative identity. The map is like a piece of lace that has grown out of all proportion. The finest details – monuments, alleyways and street names – have been woven by machine to create an artistic end product. Transparant kantdesign is verwerkt tot C’est en dentelle transparente résolument design qu’est réalisé ce plan de la ville de Bruges, par ailleurs parfaitement lisible. Sa conception combine le caractère insolite de la fonction à l’identité décorative. Car cette carte est, en tant que dentelle, délibérément surdimensionnée. Les moindres détails topographiques- monuments, ruelles et noms de rues- sont tissées à la machine pour aboutir à un produit artistique à part entière. 17

Modiste Frédérique Baeckelandt baat een eigen boetiek met atelier uit. Zij volgt actuele trends op de voet maar blijft ook trouw aan ambacht en traditie. Haar deelname aan Kantlijnen bevestigt hoe actuele kantdesign kan inspireren tot het ontwerpen van een van de meest universele aspecten van kledij, de hoed.

Beeb Koelman is modiste met hart en ziel. Zij werkt met een arsenaal aan materialen, houdt van texturen, schept voeling met de hoedenontwerpen en zoekt onophoudelijk naar vernieuwing in ontwerp en productie. Tijdens Kantlijnen stelt zij staaltjes van haar ontwerpkunst, bijzonder geconcipieerd voor het project, tentoon bij Suère, Zilverstraat 29 in Brugge.

The milliner Frédérique Baeckelandt runs her own boutique and workshop. She keeps a close eye on current trends but also adheres to craft and tradition. Beeb Koelman is a milliner in heart and soul. She uses a huge range of materials, loves textures, is tuned in to hat design and is constantly in search of innovation in design and production. For The Face of Lace, she will be exhibiting samples of her design work, conceived specially for this project, at Suère, Zilverstraat 29 in Bruges.

Feeërieke bruids- en gelegenheidskledij van de hand van deze kunstenares met naald en draad betovert je met de kracht van Victoriaanse elfjes. Sedert 2OO1 dompelt een harmonie van kleuren, materialen, couturetechnieken en zin voor ambachtelijke perfectie, de klant onder in een imaginaire sprookjeswereld vol ridders, kastelen en jonkvrouwen. Deelnemen aan Kantlijnen vormt voor Veerle Praet een creatieve uitdaging. Zij levert de droomcollectie ‘Episode’ in een perfecte fusie van haar voorkeur voor delicate materialen zoals kant en ambachtelijke perfectie.

Dans sa boutique-atelier, la modiste Frédérique Baeckelandt suit les dernières tendances de la mode tout en restant fidèle à la tradition du travail artisanal. Sa participation à Dentelle & Design prouve combien le design de la dentelle moderne constitue une source d’inspiration précieuse dans la création de l’accessoire vestimentaire le plus universel qui soit, le chapeau.

Katrien Derycke et son époux Curd Renders montrent régulièrement leurs créations intemporelles lors d’événements festifs divers: défilés de mode, salons consacrés au mariage, défilés de salon… Durant le festival Dentelle & Design, suere.be expose successivement les 5 pièces créées spécialement dans le cadre de la thématique de la dentelle.

The suere.be fashion house in Bruges specialises in the design and production of bridal and evening wear and cocktail and party clothes.
