Human Hair Extensions From India to Hollywood From the temples of India to the sets of Hollywood movies and magazines. Women all over the world are head over heels for India’s Real Human Hair. Tirumala, South India. Sri Venkateswara Temple - is a place of worship and devotion. And where 600 barbers shave 20,000 heads daily. Why? Because it is Hindu Tradition. Thousands of Hindu worshippers sacrifice their hair to the Gods as a symbolic gesture in hopes their prayers will be answered. Soon after that, the beautiful real human hair is separated into lengths and wave patterns and auctioned off to exporters, then shipped off to other countries like Europe, United States and China where it is converted to wigs and hair extensions on wefts, clips, I-tips and tape-Ins to name a few. India’s human hair industry has grown significantly over the last 3 years. In 2011, India reported $120 million in human hair revenue. In 2014, India is expected to do more than $400 million in human hair revenue. With the increase in demand for India’s real human hair, there has also been an increase in fake processed human hair. China has flooded the human hair extension market with fake processed human hair. Making it extremely impossible to tell the difference at the time of purchase. Often times it is falsely advertised as “natural”, “virgin” or “100% human hair”. Julia Angwin reported in the Wall Street Journal that Indian hair is considered more valuable. The reason is that Indian hair is completely natural, unprocessed, and free from harsh chemicals. In contrast, China supplies hair that is processed, mixed with animal hair, plastics, and harsh chemicals. In an interview with Cynthia Delgado, co-founder of Lustful Hair in Corona California, Cynthia is a trusted importer of real human hair from India and around the world. She states, “Real human hair extensions are one of the best things ladies can buy. They can instantly make your hair look more glamorous and vibrant and can last years with proper care. However, Ladies that are looking to invest in real human hair extensions have to be extremely careful when making their purchase. China has flooded the market with fake processed hair. Oftentimes Ladies spend hundreds of dollars on “real” human hair extensions, only to find out the hair is fake and processed, which mats and frizzles up once you wash it or apply heat”. When asked to provide helpful tips on how consumers can avoid buying fake, processed human hair extensions, Lustful Hair stated: Pay attention to price: Real human hair is very expensive to import, so if it is cheaply priced, that is a good indicator it is not real. Do not buy hair extensions that come in a package: Real human hair does not come in a package. This is a good indicator it was imported from china or bought from a beauty supply store. Pay attention to the wave patterns of the hair: If the curls look too perfect or all the bundles of hair look identical, then you know for sure it is not natural and the hair has been processed. Lastly, pay attention to reviews online: Yelp and Facebook reviews are the two most trusted sources on the web. Both companies do a great job on filtering real reviews that are written by real customers. In conclusion, real human hair extensions are one of the best things women can buy. Hollywood actresses and models are crazy in love with them, because they instantly make your hair look magnetic, glamorous, and youthful with beautiful wave patterns. However, the market is filled with fake processed and falsely advertised human hair extensions. Ladies should do their research on the company they are purchasing from before they invest their hard earned money.

his week is my favorite week of the year. T For 17 years the Black Voice Foundation has been taking

educators on an amazing journey retracing the steps of the Underground Railroad. This year we have the largest group of participants since the tour began, comprising of three Inland area districts: Victor Valley Union, San Bernardino Unified, and Moreno Valley Unified. These educators are learning this history from our conductors, historian Dr. Daniel Walker and Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives president (and Douglass descendant) Mr. Kenneth Morris as well as from our amazing docents: Oberlin, Ohio’s Thelma Quinn Smith who celebrated her 94th birthday last week; Ken Grossi, director of the Oberlin College archives, Shannon Prince of Buxton, Ontario, Canada, and Lezlie Wells of St. Catherine’s in Canada’s Niagara region; Dr. David “Sankofa” Anderson and his wife Ruth who dramatically present the history of the freedom movement in Rochester, New York; And Jerry Gore, the energetic griot from Maysville, Kentucky, who is our longest serving guide. They are just a few of the individuals who have dedicated their lives to preserving and passing on this invaluable information so that future generations aren’t ignorant of our shared incredible past. Today Mr. Gore shared the story of John Parker with us before we visited the Parker house in Ripley, Ohio. Parker was considered an “angel of mercy” to hundreds of freedom seekers he rescued from the South before the Civil War. For more than a decade he led a dual life, operating an iron foundry during the day and helping freedom seekers cross to the North into Ohio during the night. His courage and determination to fight the injustice of slavery, and his talents and success as a businessman in the face of discrimination, make his life one of America’s great stories. The son of a Black man and White woman, Parker was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1827 and was placed into slavery early in life. As a boy, he first went to Richmond, Virginia, and then was placed in chains and forced to walk with others on a grueling walk to Mobile, Alabama. His experience with this forced march forged his determination to obtain his own freedom. While still a young teenager, he was purchased by a widower in Mobile, Alabama with the understanding that he would pay back his purchase price of $1,800 to buy his freedom. He did so by apprenticing in an iron foundry, and left the South as a free man in 1845. After moving to Ripley, Ohio Parker became deeply involved with the rescue of freedom seekers from Kentucky between 1845 and 1865. His house still stands on the stretch of the Ohio River known as the “Borderland”, the land between the North and the South where the most critical part of a freedom seeker’s journey took place. It was there that Parker gained a reputation as an unstoppable “abductor”. At night he would cross into Kentucky, join slave parties, and lead them secretly across the Ohio River into safe hands. Parker excelled at this activity and is credited with a thousand rescues during the two decades prior to the end of the Civil War. The 50 educators and parents on this year’s trip will join the over 500 educators who have taken this same journey with us. The goal is to educate them on one of America’s important freedom movements so they can return and empower our children through education. If our students develop a “freedom consciousness” by learning about determined individuals like John Parker and others at an early age, they will learn that the pursuit of knowledge is the route to freedom and something worth fighting for. St. Bernardine Medical Center and Community Hospital of San Bernardino Each Named Practice Greenhealth Partner for Change Dignity Health Hospitals Formally Recognized for Commitment to Environmental Excellence San Bernardino

C

ommunity Hospital of San Bernardino and St. Bernardine Medical Center, members of Dignity Health, were each awarded the 2014 “Partner for Change Award” by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading health care community committed to environmentally responsible operations and care. Practice Greenhealth’s Partner for Change Awards are very competitive and recognize facilities that have achieved improvements in sustainability and showed leadership in the local community and health care sector. At a minimum, facilities applying for this Award must be recycling 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are well along the way to mercury elimination, and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs in many areas. This is the second year that both hospitals received the environmental excellence award. “We take pride in our robust sustainability efforts to protect our environment and improve the health of our patients, staff and community,” said Kimiko Ford, Dignity Health Inland Empire vice president, Support and Clinical Services. Some of the sustainability practices in place

at St. Bernardine Medical Center and Community Hospital of San Bernardino include recycling paper, cardboard, aluminum, plastics, batteries, blue wrap and metals; renting reusable, sterilized surgery supplies such as basins, sharps containers and gowns instead of using disposable products; and reprocessing surgical equipment for reuse; and using nontoxic, green certified cleaning supplies. Community Hospital also holds an annual Earth Day Extravaganza, where volunteers collect e-waste, clothing, books and magazines, eyeglasses and cell phones and send to the appropriate organization for distribution or processing. “The Partner for Change Awards affirms the

work our hospitals’ teams do every day. We are proud to be recognized as a leader in developing and implementing programs that reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship and health,” added Ford. Practice Greenhealth is a national organization of member health care organizations working to increase efficiencies and environment stewardship while improving patient safety and care through tools, best practices and knowledge. The Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards were presented June 5 in Cleveland, Ohio, at the CleanMed Conference & Exhibition.

inthenews Inland Valley ‘Bans the Box’ Inland Valley

By Rory O’Sullivan ivil rights organizers have scored a huge win with their ‘Ban the Box’ campaign becoming law, removing the question about a person’s criminal history from job applications. Assembly Bill 218, went into effect, July 1, for only public agencies but advocates still see it as a huge win. Hiring managers will now have to wait in their assessment process to make the inquiry to run criminal background checks. Organizations like National Employment Law Project and All of Us or None have spent nearly 10 years trying to turn the campaign into law according to All of Us or None Riverside chapter president Vonya Quarles. “It means you now have the opportunity,” said Quarles. “When you have hope and opportunity communities can change.”

C

Roughly one in four Americans could ultimately benefit from that change, contend “Ban the Box” boosters, citing fresh U.S. census figures that show some 70 million U.S. adults now own a criminal record - the product, advocates say, of mass incarcerations fueled by a flawed criminal justice system. One of those million is Linda Armstrong who sees this as an opportunity to get a job with Riverside County. She has volunteered with the county for more than three years but now sees this as an opportunity to be paid for helping her community. “They wouldn’t hire me,” said Armstrong. “They’re hiring people over me that don’t even have the experience.” Public Agencies have been warm to the legislation according to Connie C. Almond an attorney with, Liebert Cassidy Whitmore, which

specializes in labor and employment. “It’s part of a general trend from not denying employment simply based on a person’s criminal history,” said Almond. Her firm represents clients throughout the Inland Valley and said public agencies are complying with the law. “There is no push back that I am aware of.” The city of San Bernardino is welcoming of the new legislation and sees it as an opportunity to reach out to the community. “People being released from prison and get back in the workforce...I believe it’s generally better for our society,” said Gary. “People deserve a second chance and the city is giving them that chance if they are qualified.” Almond said public agencies still will have the ability to disqualify someone based on their

Rep. Mark Takano Introduces Helping Schools Protect Our Children Act Washington D.C.

R

ep. Mark Takano (D-CA) recently introduced the Helping Schools Protect Our Children Act, which would ensure that teachers receive the training they need to properly recognize signs of sexual abuse in children. The Helping Schools Protect Our Children Act is the companion to the Senate version, which was introduced by Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA). The Helping Schools Protect Our Children Act would expand Title II of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to allow Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to provide training for teachers to better recognize signs of sexual abuse. According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, an estimated 678,810 children were victims of child abuse and neglect in 2012 - 9.3% of which were victims of sexual abuse. Currently, 48 states mandate that teachers and other education professionals must report their suspicions of child maltreatment to the authorities, but few states also require teacher training to recognize sexual abuse.

Rep. Mark Takano attending a Young Men’s Conference at UCR last year

“Teachers and school personnel are likely to spend the most time with a child, outside of their immediate family members,” said Takano. “With that in mind, it is crucial that educators and administrators are trained to recognize signs of sexual abuse. The Helping Schools Protect Our Children Act does just that, as it expands Title II

of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to allow LEAs to provide training to recognize that a child could be a victim of sexual abuse. All children deserve to be in a safe environment, and giving teachers the tools to spot red flags could stop abuse that can scar for a lifetime.”

inthenews Science Fiction Through Lens of Racial Inclusiveness Prestigious grant will fund exploration of ethnic futurisms at UCR in 2015-16

Riverside

By Bettye Miller enerations of science fiction writers have envisioned futures marked by space travel, robots, and galactic empires. While the most familiar futures imagined in literature have been produced by white authors, there has long been an unacknowledged tradition of SF written by people of color. The University of California, Riverside will expand that universe with a yearlong exploration of ethnic futurisms that have been largely overlooked or marginalized until recently, a program of events funded by a prestigious $175,000 Sawyer Seminar grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. “Alternative Futurisms,” which will launch in September 2015, will bring together African American, Latino, Native American, and Asian American scholars, artists and writers to examine the colonial roots and legacies of science fiction and the power of speculative fiction as a tool for social change. “UCR is recognized internationally as the preeminent center for the study of the science fiction genre and its relationship to the technological cultures of modernity,” said Rob Latham, professor of English and co-director of UCR’s Science Fiction and Technoculture Studies (SFTS) program. Receipt of the Sawyer Seminar grant “confirms that UCR is the place in the world to do cutting-edge scholarship on speculative futurisms.” The yearlong program of scholarly discussions,

graduate-level courses, and public lectures, panels and performances will build on the success of a Latino science fiction conference the SFTS program presented in April 2014 — an event believed to be the first of its kind in the country. The launch of “Alternative Futurisms” in fall 2015 will coincide with the biennial Eaton Science Fiction Conference and will provide a link to “Critical Utopias: The Art of Futurismo Latino,” a UCR ARTSblock exhibition that will open in September 2017. “Critical Utopias” will feature work by contemporary Latin American and Latino artists who employ science fiction for social, cultural, and political critique. The exhibition is part of a 46-venue exploration of Latin American and Latino art funded by the Getty Foundation. Science fiction fans and scholars are rethinking what counts as science fiction, explained Sherryl Vint, professor of English and co-director of the SFTS program with Latham. Vint is co-principal investigator of the Sawyer Seminar with Latham and Nalo Hopkinson, professor of creative writing and an award-winning author of science fiction and fantasy. “The canon is not monolithically white,” she added. “Questions of social justice are emerging, particularly with regard to colonialism, borders, DNA, and profiling. Our seminar will elicit and sustain dialogue among the many peoples of color who are using speculative techniques to combat systemic racism and will seek to displace the hegemony of the post-racial imaginary with a range of ethnic futurisms.”

The term Afrofuturism was coined in 1993 to describe the work of writers such as Samuel R. Delany and Octavia E. Butler that grappled with the African American experience of technologized modernity. Chicano and Latino writers have recently begun to articulate the importance of science-fiction techniques in addressing issues of social justice and cultural politics, Hopkinson said. “This is literature that challenges the status quo,” she continued. “There are stories of androids claiming rights as sentient beings, for example. It has been a fruitful literature. California is boiling with writers of color in SF and fantasy. UC Riverside is a great place to be making dialog about futurisms that are racially inclusive.” One theme that emerged at the Latino science fiction conference was a desire among participants for opportunities to come together to discuss their work and the changing canon of science fiction, Vint said. “One goal of the Sawyer Seminar is to organize events where multiple people can be here at the same time so they can talk to each other,” she said. “We want to see what can emerge when we put them together. This is a very exciting time in science fiction and speculative fiction. There is a lot of thinking about the future, and people are turning to speculative literary techniques to write about contemporary issues.” UC Riverside’s SFTS program examines the histories and cultures of science, technology, and medicine to understand the role that culture plays

High Blood Pressure: “The Silent Killer”

T

he prevalence of high blood pressure in African Americans is among the highest in the world. High blood pressure affects more than 40 percent of African Americans. It also develops earlier in life in blacks than in whites and is usually more severe. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms. That’s why it’s called the “silent killer.” The only way to know if your blood pressure is high is to have your doctor check it regularly. What’s blood pressure? Blood pressure is the pressure of the blood against the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure results from two forces. One is created by the heart as it pumps blood into the arteries and through the circulatory system. The other is the force of the arteries as they rest between heart beats. What causes high blood pressure?

No one knows for sure. In fact, most high blood pressure cases have no known cause. Factors that may lead to high blood pressure in 5 to 10 percent of cases include kidney disease, tumors of the adrenal glands near the kidneys and narrowing of certain arteries. How often should I have my blood pressure checked? Your doctor may take several readings over time before making a judgment about your blood pressure. Checking your blood pressure is quick and painless. You can have it done in a doctor’s office, hospital, clinic, nurse’s office, pharmacy, company clinic or health fair. How does high blood pressure affect me? It can damage blood vessels in various parts of your body. And the longer it’s left untreated, the more likely organs such as your heart, brain, kidneys or eyes will be damaged. This can lead to heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease,

criminal history. She said the nature of the crime type of work and length of sentencing still can play a factor on if a person with a conviction will get a specific job. Quarles stills sees the good in it. “These are not dead end jobs,” said Quarles. “These jobs give a real living wage along with health benefits.” After earning several certificates and building close relationships with management Armstrong said she her background kept her from landing her dream job working in substance abuse. “I hope this changes that.”

in the production of science and how changes in science and technology have shaped culture. The program offers a designated emphasis at the Ph.D. level and an undergraduate minor. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation makes grants in four core program areas: higher education and scholarship; scholarly communications and information technology; art history, conservation, and museums; and performing arts. The Sawyer Seminars program was established in 1994 to provide support for comparative research on the historical and cultural sources of contemporary developments.

inmyopinion The Brown Family Reunion in North Carolina

F

or over forty years the descendants of Jonas and Mary Brown have been holding a family reunion on the first Sunday in July in Trenton, North Carolina. Hardy L. Brown Jonas and Mary are my grandparents and the parents of Floyd Brown my dad. What began as a celebration of Mary’s birthday on the fourth of July turned into a family reunion with all of her 16 kids of which one is still living, Aunt Julia. She is now 97 and still gets around with the aid of a walker. Well this year the descendants of Floyd and Essie Brown decided to hold a family reunion on the Saturday before since most of the family shows up on Sunday. It was a good time for us to share family tidbits between the nine living children and all of the children, grandchildren and great-grand kids of Floyd and Essie. It was a good way to share with the younger generation where we lived, went to church, attended school, and farmed during our youth. Some of the children not born in North Carolina could not believe we had separate schools for Blacks and Whites and even are buried in separate graveyards. It felt good for me to attend church at St. Matthew AMEZ where I grew up singing in the choir, attending Sunday school and loving those church quarterly meetings with all of the delicious fresh food from the gardens, homemade cakes and pies, and cold lemonade from the tin wash tub. As a kid life could not get any better. Of course a reunion also takes you on a trip down memory lane as you reflect on your childhood. I have a few photos that I would like to share that will help tell my story of growing up in Trenton.

pointofview Breaking the Code of Silence

I

found my voice long before I became a writer in community organizing. That’s where I found my voice, where I was able to take all that pain and transform it into something useful in the world, and I never looked back.” Michael Patrick MacDonald is a storyteller. Michael recently encouraged the crowd of young leaders at the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools’® National Training to understand the power of storytelling to create change. His first book, All Souls: A Family Story from Southie, became a national bestseller and won an American Book Award, and All Souls and its follow-up Easter Rising: A Memoir of Roots and Rebellion have captivated readers with their accounts of his childhood in South Boston’s Old Colony housing project and the poverty, crime, and addiction that devastated his Irish Catholic neighborhood and killed four of his siblings. He said All Souls begins with a description of an event he organized in his own community: “I organized an All Souls Day vigil to get the neighborhood to start to come out and to tell the truth about all the deaths in the neighborhood, from murders, overdoses, all of the things that we didn’t talk about, all of the things that we pretended didn’t exist. South Boston held the highest concentration of White poverty in America, and I grew up in the housing projects there in a family of 11 kids. Of the 11 kids, we lost four, plus a sister who was crippled in a fight over pills and was pushed off a roof in the projects. But the others all died from poverty and violence as well. My mother was shot as well, and all the years you would go through that stuff, and all of our neighbors were going through that stuff, we were strangled by this code of silence where you were never able to talk about it. You weren’t allowed to talk about this stuff because our neighborhood was controlled by organized crime, but also because the neighborhood was in a state of denial, choosing to believe what the media says—that this stuff doesn’t happen here,

this stuff happens ‘over there,’ to ‘those people.’ That’s Black and Latino people, in particular. [South Boston] is very well known for the race riots of the 1970s, when the neighborhood broke into racist riots over desegregation in the city of Boston, but had an awful lot in common with those neighborhoods that we were trying to keep out—an awful lot in common in terms of class.” Michael knew the code of silence in his neighborhood very well because it was the way he was brought up. In his own family he was “the quiet one” of the 11 children, and as each of his four brothers died he initially felt “kind of stunned speechless.” But when he started working “over there” in some of Boston’s other neighborhoods he realized he wasn’t the only one holding a story inside—and learned how much more power people had when they started letting their stories out and sharing them with each other. “I decided to write a memoir after years of doing community organizing, especially with a lot of mothers of murdered children, from around the city of Boston—from Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, the Black and Latino neighborhoods, as well as eventually South Boston and Charlestown, the poorer White neighborhoods . . . and I would organize these press conferences or rallies, and I’d push them to the microphone to get them to tell their stories. I saw what happened to them when they told their stories in whatever amount that they wanted to and were capable of telling— how it changed them, and it was also changing the world.” Michael could see the impact these mothers were having on their communities, especially by speaking out against gun violence. He could also see that sharing their stories was helping reduce their own risks of suicide, alcoholism, drug addiction, and need for revenge against the people who had taken their family members’ lives, and breaking their silences was even changing them in other ways: “They had a really powerful strength, and they completely changed from

‘high-risk’ people to really powerful people . . . I saw what it did for them . . . and then they started to push me out to the front to the microphone, and I would give little bits of my story, and tell of my siblings that were killed, and eventually wanted Marian Wright Edelman President, Children’s to tell more and more Defense Fund because I started to feel what it does for you.” By the vigil he described at the beginning of his book he was both organizer and participant, one of the last people to step to the altar to light a candle and recite the names of each of his own lost brothers— “I stopped and took a deep breath. Then I spoke up. Davy, Frankie, Kevin, and Patrick, and for all souls.” Michael ultimately learned a lesson that he compared to reading Howard Zinn’s beloved classic A People’s History of the United States. “When I even just saw the title of that book and started to think about what ‘people’s history’ means, that means that all of us have to tell our stories, and that’s ultimately a people’s history— and the more we can encourage that in young people, the more we will have a more complete story.” Readers everywhere have been grateful for the ways Michael Patrick MacDonald has helped complete South Boston’s story, and he says as he continues to travel and talk about his own writing he’s learned the idea young people connect with most is how powerful it can be to share their own stories and the “possibility of transforming trauma into voice.” It’s a critical lesson for all young people and for all of us—and especially for those who’ve experienced some of the same kinds of family and community poverty, violence, and addiction, for whom breaking silences and realizing they are not alone can be life-changing.

an Bernardino Valley College Interim President Dr. Gloria Fisher developed a love for education at an early age and went from teaching the neighborhood children on her block as a child, to overseeing the day-to-day operations at one of San Bernardino counties fastest growing community colleges. The Voice recently spoke to Dr. Fisher on her early life, her family, and her thoughts on education. What was life like growing up as a child? I was born and grew up in San Francisco with a wonderful mom and dad who were always there for me. I have a younger brother and he and I remain very close. My mom was a college graduate and a nurse. My dad was a ship fitter. We did everything together. Anytime my parents went somewhere, they took us with them. Later, our family moved to Riverside and I have been in this area most of the time since, except for a few years when I went to law school in Fresno and worked for a law firm there. Was education stressed in your family? Very much so. The push at home was to be educated. My dad’s philosophy was you go to school, get educated, then go to work. The whole idea of life was to have a job. It’s what you do. As a child, what did you see yourself doing when you grew up? And how different is it from your current career path? When I was very young, I thought I wanted to be a stewardess—today of course, that would be “cabin attendant.” The idea of working and traveling just seemed like a great idea to me. But even as early as middle school I knew I wanted to be a teacher instead. There was a large family on our block that had this ramshackle old oneroom building in the back of their property, and I used to teach school to the family’s children there. They were all younger than I was and this was not playtime, it was serious learning. Their parents were immigrants who did not speak English, so they were not exposed to things we native English speakers take for granted. I taught them the ABCs, colors, how to count. I took it very seriously and they did too. I want to give credit to one of my own teachers from that time, Ms. Rohan, who was from Ireland.

She had a tremendous passion for teaching, and in those days we had one teacher for all our subjects. She added something special to our curriculum, and that was learning all about Ireland. She clearly wanted us to know about her home, and her enthusiasm really resonated with me. Her greatest satisfaction seemed to come from the success of her students, and I have never forgotten that. Prior to coming to SBVC, what did you do? When I started college, which by the way was right here at Valley, I had an idea in mind that I wanted to be the next Perry Mason. Criminal law was exciting to me. In addition to course work here at Valley, I also took classes at RCC and then at Cal State San Bernardino. I also started teaching around that time for the Riverside County Office of Education. Then I was accepted to San Joaquin College of Law in Fresno, where I graduated fourth in my class. I went to work for a law firm there doing all civil work and was their contracts specialist. My Perry Mason criminal law dream had to be put on hold. When my mother took ill, I returned to Southern California. Once I was back home, so to speak, I started thinking about my love of teaching. I ended up returning to the classroom at the community college level, first with Riverside City College, at what were then satellite programs, not full-fledged campuses, in Moreno Valley and Norco. With my JD degree and law firm experience I taught law at both schools, including courses in real property, civil proceedings, legal writing, contracts, and business law. How did your career begin at SBVC? While I was teaching at Rio Hondo in 1991 I found out about and applied for a full-time, tenure-track position that had opened at San Bernardino Valley College. The position was for an instructor in the college’s Administration of Justice program. When the college hired me, it was a bit of a dream come true, combining my two loves—teaching and criminal justice. I have been with Valley College now for some 23 years, and I cannot imagine being anywhere else.

1

What are some of your biggest accomplishments at SBVC? In 1994, after three years of teaching, I was appointed Co-director of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department law enforcement training programs, which included the Basic Academy, Reserve Officer training, and Advanced Officer training. My new assignment also included the role of Director of the Extended Format Basic Law Enforcement Academy Program offered on the SBVC campus. I was now the Department Chair of our Police Science Program. The regular sheriff’s academy is an intense, 23-week-long program whose students are almost all people who already have been provisionally hired by a law enforcement agency, conditional upon satisfactory completion of their academy training. But not everyone who wants a career in law enforcement can just quit everything else they are doing to enter such an intense program. Some people still have full-time jobs and families to support. That’s why the Extended Academy was started. These students do the same courses and training, but it’s spread out over a year, with five-hour classes two nights a week and one weekend day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, in 2000, the college underwent

reorganization and I was selected to become Dean of Criminal Justice. This gave me responsibility for the sheriff’s academies, our administration of justice degree and certificate programs, and our corrections certificate program. As an additional assignment I was involved in the start-up of the Middle College High School that now stands right across the street from our college. This program lets students who qualify, earn an associate’s degree from Valley College while they also complete their requirements for their high school diploma. I am very pleased that I was able to play a role in establishing that school. Next, I was asked to become acting Dean of Social Sciences, followed by my appointment as the Supervisor of the San Bernardino Community College District Police Department. Along the way, I also was in charge of the Perkins Grants for the college. In January 2012 I was named the Title IX Coordinator and just four short months later I took over as Interim Vice President of Student Services, a position I held until being asked to serve as Interim President starting in April 2013. It’s been a whirlwind the past few years, but I am proud of the fact that as we come out of the Great Recession our enrollment is growing, our campus continues with its bond-funded construction

programs, and our graduates are transferring in greater numbers to four-year schools or starting careers in various trades and vocations that are in growing demand. Where do you see SBVC in the future? My vision is that San Bernardino Valley College is embraced by our community because the education of our students is at the center of everything we do. Whether it’s basic skills or an AA or AS degree program, training to stay current in one’s job or learning a whole new skill for a changing workplace, Valley College is the place that people come to for their educational needs. I also see our college as a growing community resource where people also come to hear concerts, watch theatrical productions, and enjoy being part of a vibrant community asset where they always feel welcome, where they love to come and be part of what’s going on. As our building program approaches its latter stages, I also see a campus that becomes environmentally responsible with drought-tolerant plantings that sacrifice nothing for beauty and ambience. How would you like to be remembered? That is a hard question to answer. It is not

4

something I spend time thinking about. I suppose, taking a page from how I was brought up, I would like to be remembered as a person who treated people fairly and respectfully. I would like to be thought of as someone who maintained a sense of balance and integrity. Frankly, if it’s wrong, I won’t do it! What are your plans for outreach to incoming students? We have a very well developed outreach program to attract new students. Our outreach specialist regularly visits our feeder high schools. We sponsor on-campus events for high school counselors to let them know about our various degree and certificate programs, as well as the wide variety of student services we offer, including programs for those with special needs. These include tutoring programs, continued on page 21 1-Dr. Fisher speaking at this past May’s commencement. 2-Dr. Fisher speaking at SBVCs annual Spotlighting Our Success awards banquet where the administration recognized outstanding contributions from staff, faculty, and management in multiple categories. 3-Dr. Fisher with Dr. Tomas Morales, President of Cal State University, San Bernardino during an event honoring SBVCs Middle College High School outstanding students. 4-Dr. Fisher speaking to the San Bernardino Kiwanis Club in April.

xcitement filled the air as a frenzied crowd of spectators both young and old stood by the sidelines of the track shouting and cheering wildly for what has probably become one of the most adrenaline-incited motor sports, known as; drifting. Drifting is a technique where the driver intentionally oversteers or dramatically turns the steering wheel at a sharp angle causing the car to drift sideways. Last week, Adams Motorsports Park hosted a special drift night event, ‘Slippery When Wet’. As if traditional drifting wasn’t enough, the racetrack is doused with water to create a slick surface increasing the level of intensity and making it more challenging for drivers. Drift night takes place every Thursday, gates open at 5 p.m., drifting from 6 to 10 p.m. Cost is $5 general admission per person, $20/hour per person to drive and $10 for ride-along. Voice News and Adams Motorsports Park will be launching a community festival this fall; Oct. 11, 2014 from Noon to 4 p.m. Attendees will get a chance to cheer for their favorite elected officials as they race to the finish in a go-cart race. Look for more information to be announced soon. If you are interested in being a vendor or a volunteer for this festival contact Natasha Ferguson at 951.662.8780 or Timel Sebastian at 951.686.3826. Adams Motorsports Park is located at 5292 24th Street, Riverside CA 92509. For a list of upcoming events visit www.adamsmotorsportspark.com.

supplemental instruction, disabled student programs and services, a program that allows high school students to earn college credits while still in high school, as well as non-college credit courses for those who need more work on their math and English. We have courses in English as a Second Language, an office dedicated to veterans’ needs, a program that fosters STEM studies— that’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—a foster and kinship program for both youth and their caregivers…it’s a really comprehensive list. We even send our counselors out to area high schools to do pre-enrollment assessments at the high schools, to be more convenient for the students. I personally regularly meet and visit with the superintendents of our feeder high schools to cement our partnerships as we discuss our many shared interests. How do you foster leadership on campus? We have regular training programs for our

managers. In fact we just held an all-day managers’ retreat on June 26th. I encourage our managers to enroll in off-campus leadership programs and I am enrolled in one myself. There is a lot of benefit in being exposed to the experiences of seasoned community college leaders who have been there and done that, who understand the particular challenges of community colleges, as opposed to more generic types of training. To that end, the Association of California Community College Administrators provides a good deal of help to community college executives, and we take advantage of their offerings. What advice would you give to students today regarding their aspirations, career path, education, etc.? The first thing I would say is that you have to be committed. Set a goal and commit yourself to accomplishing it, including setting yourself targets for both the short and the long term. And then, most important, never give up!

(Laughs). Spare time, you say? Well, actually, I made a commitment to myself that I would purposely set aside time for myself. So one thing I like to do is read, and I usually enjoy both fiction and non-fiction, although lately I have taken to reading a couple books about community colleges. From time to time I manage to get out to play a round of golf. And my guilty pleasure is going to Disneyland. I think that stems from my childhood and my grandmother when we lived in Northern California. She once took me to Disneyland not long after it first opened and that experience just completely engaged me. I always took my son and later my niece and nephew as well when they were younger. Now I go twice a year and always enjoy it. Finally, tell us a little about your family life. I’m single and I have a grown son, six grandchildren—one girl and five boys, and three great grandchildren—one girl and two boys. I also have three Yorkshire terriers.

In Memoriam Danny Ramadan, CSUSB honor student and dedicated musician

W

hen there are no words, there is music, said Erik Jester, the director of bands for Cal State San Bernardino’s music department. Jester wasn’t at a loss for words describing Danny Ramadan, a CSUSB music student who died July 3 from injuries he suffered in a June 16 car accident -just two days after he graduated. “As musicians, when there are no words, there’s music,” Jester said. “And that’s how we express ourselves.” And it was through music that Danny Ramadan, 21, an honor student and musician whom CSUSB music professors called the university’s “top trumpeter,” expressed himself. Not so much with words, Jester said, but by example. “He didn’t have to say much,” said Jester, who had Danny in all the classes that he taught, and also served as Danny’s adviser for his senior project, as well as working closely with h i m in the music

department on other projects. “He just did. He was a great role model for all of our students.” The professor added, “He was one of the brightest students we had at Cal State throughout his time here. He never uttered a negative word about anything or anyone, and I never once heard a complaint out of his mouth, which is a testament to the type of man he was, let alone student. He was committed to his craft.” Danny and his girlfriend, Leslie Gonzalez, were on their way to Redlands when the car he was driving collided head-on with a Mitsubishi Eclipse that, according to authorities, had crossed the double yellow line on Little Mountain Road. The driver of that car, identified as Jose Luis Zacarias, was killed in the collision. The cause of the crash is under investigation, authorities said. Gonzalez suffered a broken arm and leg, a fractured shoulder and fractured disk in her lower spine. Danny was put on life support after the accident, and on July 3, it was turned off. That Danny and his girlfriend were heading to Redlands for the music department’s year-end awards banquet where students, including Danny, were to be honored made the loss a little more painful, Jester said. “As a small department we, as a faculty, are very close with our students, and the students are very close with each other,” he said. “Many of the students are aware of the accident, and had visited Danny while he was in the hospital. In fact, I think one of the doctors mentioned that Danny broke the record for most visitors. The loss of Danny alone is devastating, but as a faculty, watching his friends cope with the loss is deeply saddening.” Danny planned to pursue a career as an elementary school music teacher. Jester said he had all the attributes to be an excellent music educator, from the passion for the art to the desire, professionalism and patience. And, the professor said, Danny was always prepared. He had been teaching a music class – the trumpet – at Colton High School. Besides the trumpet, Ramadan also played the trombone and piano along with many other musical

instruments, and also sang in the choir. He also played in a few local groups including the Sozo Community Jazz Band in Riverside, the Redlands Community Orchestra, and all of Cal State San Bernardino’s ensembles, from symphony to jazz. While listing all that may show how music was part of his life, it doesn’t communicate Danny’s passion for the art. Jester shared this story to illustrate how passionate Danny was about music: Earlier this year, Danny traveled to Chicago to watch the Chicago Symphony perform Symphony No. 7, a piece by one of his favorite composers, Dmitri Shostakovich. That by itself is not particularly noteworthy. How Danny ended up there, however, is one of Jester’s favorite memories of his student. Jester said Danny had dropped by his office one day and mentioned how great it would be if the Chicago Symphony performed the piece. As it happened, Danny looked online and saw that the symphony was scheduled to perform it four days later in Chicago. “In one of those ‘you-only-live-once’ types of advising, I told him he should go to Chicago if he had the funds,” Jester said. “And he actually did. He took some of his graduation money, booked a flight and just went. Just to hear a concert. He loved music.” And to show just how much of an impression he left on others, the music department has preliminary plans to honor Danny with a memorial concert, either soon or in the fall, Jester said. And just like Danny, the music will be far ranging, from jazz, to symphony, to choir. And, as a testament to his influence, some from his peers from his high school alma mater, Cajon High, have been invited to perform; they had inquired about putting together a musical memorial for Danny, but decided to join the CSUSB effort. “We really want to do something nice for him in his memory and his honor,” Jester said. Ramadan’s father, Ayman, is a part-time faculty member in the university’s World Languages and Literature Department. His mother, Samira Murtada, who has served as an Arabic mentor in the department’s Summer Language Intensive program, withdrew after to her son’s accident. “We’re all just heartbroken over here,” Jester said. “He’ll live on through his legacy and his character. We’re all better from having known him.” The family plans to establish a memorial fund in Danny Ramadan’s name to support music education at Cal State San Bernardino.
