Jeff Foster Memorial Award JEFF FOSTER MEMORIAL AWARD Created prior to the 1984 season, the Jeff Foster Memorial Award has been the cornerstone of the Bronco basketball philosophy through four head coaches. Individual players are rewarded for doing the little things that make the team successful as a whole. Being unselfish, and thinking “Team” before “I” is the key to claiming the award.

The award is named after former Bronco player Jeff Foster, who played just Jeff Foster one season with Boise State (1986-87) before dying in a car accident Sept. 25, 1987, on his way home to see his parents in Salinas, Calif. The winner of the award is the player who is instrumental to success in the program both on and off the floor. The player must be a leader, a hard worker and provide motivation toward success during both games and practice.

Boise State men’s basketball head coach Leon Rice announced Daequon Montreal as the recipient of the 2010-11 Jeff Foster Memorial Award. During the 2010-11 season Montreal started each of the Broncos’ record-setting 35 games, one of just two players in school history to accomplish the feat (La’Shard Anderson; 2010-11). He was the Broncos’ third-leading scorer at 10.2 points per game, and led the Broncos in rebounding at 5.2 rebounds per game. Montreal also led the Broncos and ranked 11th in the Western Athletic Conference in field goal percentage (.464; 129-of-278). “Daequon put the team first all season, bringing energy and enthusiasm to practice, playing through injuries and setting the tone in everything we did,” Rice said. “He was a consummate leader and a perfect example of what the Jeff Foster Memorial Award embodies.” Created prior to the 1984 season and initially named the Hard Hat Award, the Jeff Foster Memorial Award has signified the Bronco Basketball philosophy through four head coaches. The Broncos went 22-13 (.629) in 2010-11, reaching the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational. It was just the fourth postseason appearance for Boise State in the last 17 years, and the Broncos’ 22 victories are tied for the fifth-most in school history.
