Register Online!

Why stand in line or wait for a free phone line? Registration opens Monday, March 17, at 5 p.m. Log on to brocku.ca/recreation-services and click on the Online registration link. To Set-up your account: 1. If you have registered in a Recreation Services course previously, and we have your current e-mail address on file, you can use the “Forgot My Password” function on the Login tab. Your Account PIN and Login ID will then be e-mailed to you. If you have changed your email address, please call 905688-5550 x4060 to update your account. 2. If you are a brand new guest, click on Create New. 3. You will need your Account PIN, Login ID, and a Visa or MasterCard for payment. 4. A credit card is required to register online; however, you may choose to visit the Walker Complex Welcome Desk in person to pay by cash, cheque or debit card. To Register: 1. Click on the Register for Programs button. 2. Find the program you want. 3. Click on the Register button. 4. Go to the Select a Client drop-down list and select the person to be registered in the program.

Private Lessons

Swimmer and instructor will work together to achieve the skills and endurance required for the Lifesaving Society swim level.

You may then: 1. Register additional people for the same program by clicking on the “Add Another Client to This Program” box and go back to step 4 above; 2. Search for another program by clicking on the “Add a Program” box which will take you back to the “Select a Program” tab and start at step 2 above; 3. Clear all selections by clicking on the “Clear all Selections” box. 4. Complete the Registration by clicking on the “Complete Registration” box. 5. Click on the “Make a Payment” button and make your payment by selecting the appropriate credit card type, enter the credit card number and the expiry date. Click on the “Complete Transaction” button. 6. Your receipt will then be displayed on screen. You can print a copy of your receipt by clicking on the print button at the bottom of the screen. 7. To logout of the system, click on the Logout button at the top of the screen. Always remember to logout after completing your Recreation Services online Registration session.

Semi-Private Lessons

Students of a similar age and skill level (no more than one level apart, i.e., Swimmer 1 and 2) can register together. Register your child and provide the name of the second child. You must phone in to register the second child for the class (905-688-5550 x4060). In the case where the second child is from another family, you must ask the parent of that child to phone in the registration.

Child and Youth programs

Preschool C (3-4 yrs.)

Youngsters will learn side rolls and jumping into deep water while wearing a Personal Floatation Device. They will recover objects from the bottom of the pool in waist-deep water and work on kicking and gliding through the water on their front and back. Prerequisite: Completed Preschool B.

Parent and Tot (2-3 yrs.)

Structured in-water interaction between parent and child stresses the importance of play in developing water positive attitudes and skills. Lifesaving Society Water Smart® tips are given to keep your child safe in an aquatic setting. Parent participation is required. A swim diaper must be worn by children who are not toilet trained. Jumping into chest deep water unassisted, submerging and exhaling underwater, entering and exiting the water wearing a Personal Floatation Device, and gliding on front and back are the next steps to your preschooler learning how to swim. Prerequisite: Completed Preschool A.

Preschool E (3-4 yrs.)

Children will learn how to do a forward roll entry wearing a PFD and hold their breath underwater for up to 10 seconds. They will work on longer front and back crawl swims, interval training and whip kick. Prerequisite: Completed Preschool D. Code

Swimmer 1 (5-12 yrs.)

Beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a Personal Floatation Device. They will learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They will work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back. Prerequisite: Beginner (5-12 yrs.)

Swimmer 2 (5-12 yrs.)

These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water, learn to fall sideways into the water wearing a Personal Floatation Device and learn to support themselves at the surface without an aid. They will also be introduced to whip kick, flutter kick interval training, and swim 10–15 m on their front and back. Prerequisite: Swimmer 1 or Preschool D or E.

Swimmer 3 (5-12 yrs.)

Junior swimmers will learn to dive and do in-water front somersaults. Their new bag of tricks includes handstands and completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard. They will work on a 10–15 m front crawl, back crawl and whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 25 m. Prerequisite: Swimmer 2.

Swimmer 4 (5-12 yrs.)

Intermediate swimmers will swim 5 m underwater and lengths of front crawl, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. They will cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or back crawl interval training. Prerequisite: Swimmer 3.

Swimmer 5 (5-12 yrs.)

Swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kick, and in-water backward somersaults. Front and back crawl will be increased to over 50 m swims for each, and breaststroke to 15-25 m. The pace will pick up with 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts of 4 x 50 m front or back crawl, and 4 x 10-15 m breaststroke. Prerequisite: Swimmer 4.

Swimmer 6 (5-12 yrs.)

These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They will develop strength in breaststroke sprints over 25 m, swim lengths of front and back crawl, and complete a 300 m workout. Prerequisite: Swimmer 5. Code

Canadian Swim Patrol – Rookie, Ranger or Star (8-12 yrs.)

Children will develop swim strokes and skills while having fun in the challenging world of lifesaving. Swimming strength and efficiency will improve with an emphasis on Water Smart® behaviour. This action-packed aquatic challenge is for children who love the water and want more than a traditional lesson. Quick learners, those caught between levels or programs, and youth who thrive in an energetic learning environment are most welcome. Activities include: • swimming • cooperative games • competitive games • canoeing • snorkelling • diving • shadow guarding • lifesaving skills • rescues • first aid • crafts Code

Lifesaving Sport Fundamentals (8-15 yrs.)

Improve your strokes with 25 m swims of front crawl, back crawl and whip kick. With 100 m workouts and 25 m sprints, fitness levels should increase. Touch and go turns will also be introduced. Hitting a target with a rope, movement with flippers, swimming underneath an obstacle, securing a rescue tube to a manikin and treading water while supporting an object, are some of the sport skills to be enjoyed. Participants should be comfortable in the deep end, able to swim 25 meters and tread water for 45 seconds. Prerequisite: Swimmer 3. Code

Child Admittance Procedure for Fun Swims 1. Children under the age of six years may not be admitted to the swimming pool unless they are accompanied in the water by a parent or guardian (within arms reach) who is at least 12 years of age and who is responsible for their direct supervision, with a maximum of two children for each parent or guardian (2:1). 2. Children 6-9 years, who are non-wimmers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the water (within arms reach), who is at least 12 years of age and responsible for their direct supervision. The ratio of nonswimmers to parent or guardian may be a maximum of four bathers to one parent or guardian (4:1). 3. Children 6-9 years who are swimmers (able to demonstrate comfort in the water and pass the facility swim test) may be admitted to the swimming pool unaccompanied. Parents/guardians must remain at the aquatic centre either in the pool gallery or on deck.

Refund policy

Unless otherwise specified, refunds for programs already in progress will be issued within the first two weeks of the start date. A $15 administrative fee will be deducted. After two weeks or two classes, refunds may be issued due to extreme circumstances (injury, accident, relocation outside the Niagara Region). Written documentation may be required. Refunds for certification programs will only be issued when the Welcome Desk receives notice of cancellation at least five business days prior to the course start date. This is due to financial commitments to the instructor, the certification governing body, and 100% attendance requirement. We reserve the right to cancel any program that does not have sufficient registration. Participants will receive a full refund and notification prior to the beginning of the course.
