PRIDE 2016

WELCOME Welcome to Pride 2016, an exciting 10 days of events using the Arts to showcase our culture and community, to celebrate being LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Trans) and triumph against shame and stigma. It’s been a rollercoaster year! We’ve outgrown the usable space in Castle Park and Pride’s moved to a new home: Bristol Amphitheatre & At-Bristol’s Millennium Square, no easy task. We have again worked really hard to keep Pride a free and open event for all, on pride day everyone will be asked for a £3 donation, but if you can please get a £5 supporter wristbands for onsite discounts (inc. the bars) and free bus travel. Our £15 bands offer entry to 3 afterparties too – all whilst helping to keep Pride happening. Following a 2016 budget amendment by Bristol Labour, we were awarded some funding! This one-off has been vital, our thanks to Marvin Rees, John Halpin and Labour for making this happen but also to the Greens, Lib Dems and former Mayor George Ferguson for supporting it. Clearly everyone values us and recognises our impact in reducing feelings of isolation, increasing wellbeing, bringing people together and celebrating community. We’ve continued to work through the year visiting businesses to give talks empowering staff & managers, visiting schools to talk to students about being LGBT+ and challenging attitudes & actions, lastly you may have seen our street stencils across the Bristol region, highlighting Race and LGBT+ Hate Crime. All this has been challenging but also inspiring and being asked to do this, or the clear need, shows us Pride is still needed and drives us onwards and upwards. Be sure to check out this year’s film festival Queer Vision, named by the Guardian as one of the best in the country last year, also our specially curated Theatre Night put together especially for Pride or our Comedy Night featuring some of the best LGBT+ talent in the business. Have a great Pride everyone, get involved, be proud and enjoy. Daryn J Carter Festival Director and Programmer

SPECIALLY CURATED PERFORMANCES TO CELEBRATE PRIDE Another highlight of Pride Week, our Theatre Night never fails to entertain and this year we proudly bring you three specially created pieces brought together to celebrate Pride.

TIME PRICE VENUE

7:30pm £8 Wardrobe Theatre

Taking over Old Market’s newest venue we are proud to support The Wardrobe Theatre, in the Old Market Assembly (formerly Flamingos Nightclub) join us as we celebrate #Shakespeare400 and use the arts to showcase our culture and community. Venus & Adonis “Love is a spirit all compact of fire, Not gross to sink, but light, and will aspire” 20:20 Vision explore LGBT+ themes in a special stage adaptation of Shakespeare’s epic poem. A story rife with love, lust, and forbidden passion; Venus and Adonis is Shakespeare’s most unabashedly sexy work and this is the first major stage adaption of the work in the UK for over a decade. Adonis is a hunter unversed in the desires of the flesh, while Venus is an older temptress determined to ignite the young warrior’s sexual awakening. Utilising an all male company to explore themes of gender fluidity and social conditioning.

Much Ado About Bingo Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your Bingo Dabber! Back in the Elizabethan era, Shakespeare was considered to be the light-entertainment of the day. Fast-forward to the 20th Century and popular culture gave birth to BINGO! You are invited to join Boogaloo Stu’s creation: ’70s telly host and crimplene-clad showbiz legend Derek Daniels for a sensationally silly Shakespearean round of retro musical bingo with scintillating conversation. Grab your bingo card and tick off the songs and quotes as you hear them, in a frantic bid to win the Full House and claim a prize. #APPilyEverAfter Can 6 photos honestly reflect your personality? Does one gym selfie truly reveal the inner workings of your soul? #APPilyEverAfter explores our generation’s reliance on networking apps and how their integration has irrevocably changed our pursuit of happiness. Inspired by hook-up apps, dating sites and overbearing social expectations. Pride present the creative talents of Josh ‘Jacobs’ & Paul ‘Dincent’, as they try ever-so-hard to seduce you through song, sketches and stand up – delving deep into the world of online dating and unravelling the trials and tribulations they adventure. Following the last performance there will be a short Q&A panel discussion with the THT, Brigstowe Project and the creators of #AppilyEverAfter to explore some of the themes discussed, local support networks and safer sex.

Jayde Adams So good we had to have her back. 2014’s Funny Women Awards and London Cabaret’s Audience Award winner Jayde has a passion for making people laugh and in 2011 discovered she could sing opera. A regular at festivals such as Edinburgh Fringe, Glastonbury and Bestival, hailed as unbelievably funny by Russell Howard and Britain’s funniest woman comic by the Daily Mail, and they mostly hate women. Sam Lake A whirlwind of wit, wisdom and weirdness he’s a Max Turner Finalist 2016, a Leicester Square Theatre New Act Semifinalist 2015 and a South Coast Comedian of the Year Semifinalist 2016. He’ll charm you in a way only a half-cornish, half-spanish boy can. Crude but clever humour delivered tongue firmly in his cheek (his own tongue, in case there’s any confusion). Hannah Brackenbury Brighton based comedy singer-songwriter who has been described as “Victoria Wood and Tim Minchin’s lesbian love child”. She performs original material on such varied themes as obsessive cat owners, bad breath, cannibalism and taking too many selfies. Through to this year’s Music Comedy Awards finals Hannah also recently completed her first solo UK tour promoting new album Jumbled.

Selected as the first ever MC for the Stonewall Summer Party he regularly contributed articles to Attitude magazine, and was nominated in this year’s Amused Moose Comedy Awards Top 10 shows at Edinburgh Fringe. Jen Brister Stand up comic, writer and comedy actor Jen is a regular performer on the UK & International circuit. She’s had a series of sell out shows year on year. New show Wishful Thinking was nominated Best New Show at the Leicester Comedy Festival and went on to be a sold out show at the Edinburgh Festival last year which also saw Jen appearing on Comedy Central’s Live at the Comedy Store. We’ve been lucky to secure Jen who is supporting Frankie Boyle and starring in her first feature film this year.

FILM: STUDIO 54 THE DIRECTORS CUT

Director Mark Christopher’s glitter bomb of sex, drugs and debauchery in New York’s 1970 party scene vanished, now, we get to see his version, in full, which he describes as a miracle. A new gay cult classic! Tales of glorious hedonistic revelry that transports us to an underground utopia of the sexually liberated. This version reinstates the bisexuality of Ryan Phillippe’s character, as well as the film’s core love triangle between Phillippe, Salma Hayek and Breckin Meyer. The sound track sure does put you in the mood to party... see below! Tickets from The Watershed box office Tel: 0117 927 5100 or www.watershed.co.uk

KEEPING IT GREEN

We’ve always been proud to be a ‘green’ festival and we hope that you continue to support our work. We saved over 60KG of plastic last year and over 1 tonne of carbon, the equivalent travel miles from Bristol, UK to Bristol, Maine USA. let’s see if we can get to Bristol, Canada this year. Forget the car and get discounted travel with Bristol Ferry’s and free bus travel on Pride Day with First Bus with a supporter wristband. We also kept Pride central so you can still walk!

EDF Energy help us be generator free and our youth area is pedal powered so feel free to lend a hand. With Refill Bristol we again offer a free water station at Pride. So bring a bottle to fill up, or buy one from them and help us save hundreds of waste plastic bottles. Lastly we’re keeping the reusable cup scheme on the bars. Pay a £1 deposit on the 1st drink and bring it back with you each time. When you’re done return the cup and get your £1 back, or donate it to Pride.

SATURDAY 9 JULY

PRIDE PARADE

BE VISIBLE, BE LOUD, BE PROUD! Our bold statement for equality and diversity, celebrate our community and show that hatred and prejudice has no place in our city, or anywhere. This year our theme is Celebrating Our Diversity, we want you to come as yourself and for the parade to showcase and celebrate the L, G, B, T and everything in-between. We have a wonderfully diverse community but sometimes it’s difficult for some of our community to have a voice or to be seen, Pride is your time to shine. Even the parade costs money but we keep it free for the public to enter. We’re asking all businesses and corporate organisations who have not booked a stall at, or sponsored, Pride to make a donation to take part. Our thanks to Lloyds, Dyson, The NUT, Network Rail, Aviva & Nandos who have done just that. Email: info@bristolpride.co.uk
