Welcome to

BRINK

We kick off the February/March issue of BRINK with some modifications! First, let’s point out the obvious – we’ve gone bimonthly. The reason for this is to increase circulation and provide a better saturation of BRINK in a wider market. The response that BRINK has received has been excellent and we know that it’s passing through friends hands. So why not let the friend keep the copy?

The second obvious change is that we have gone glossy! We loved the way the newsprint gave us a down to earth and organic feel, but the glossy truly makes the featured photographers work stand out better than ever. The third change we have made in our short hiatus was an overhaul of the layout and content. We’ve created a consistent and eye catching layout that we think you will enjoy with every issue. The content has been tweaked slightly to give you, our reader, a further understanding of what’s going on in and out of the community. With all that said, you hold a great issue in your hands! Photography from the dynamic Victoria Zeoli and a concept styled and conceived by Meagan Butler and Safia Michelle of Lipstick Mixtapes. Plus much more! I truly hope you enjoy this February/ March issue of BRINK (V 2.0) and look for us in April!

Escape from New York: BabyCakes Invades Orlando Welcome to the new world. Vegan bakery du jour, BabyCakes, has opened shop in the heart of Downtown Disney and its never tasted so sweet. Downtown Disney Marketplace (407) 938-9044 www.babycakesnyc.com Hours: Mon-Sun 8 am-11 pm

hen something is too good to be true, it must be Babycakes bakery. Read on to hear how Owner Erin McKenna got her Vegan NYC bakery in the happiest place on Earth. BRINK: In the post on the BabyCakes blog you mention that the Downtown Disney location was two years in the making and the secret was hard to keep. What was the initial reaction when first approached about having a location on Walt Disney World property? Excited? Overwhelming? Nervous?

Gleeful? All of the above? Erin McKenna: When I was first approached by Larry Levy to partner with him to bring BabyCakes NYC to Downtown Disney I thought it was about time! I always knew that BabyCakes--with our pink striped uniforms and the adorable store stacked with cupcakes, cookies and donuts that everyone was free to indulge in-- would be a perfect fit with Disney. When I told Emily Woesthoff, our General Manager in NY, about us launching in Downtown Disney I think she turned bright pink and almost started crying since she has always been a die-hard Disney fan. I knew in that moment that she would be the only one I would consider going to manage our Disney location.

B: With millions of tourists (and locals) at Disney each year, were you apprehensive about how BabyCakes and Vegan goodness would be perceived in general on the property? EM: Although I was a bit nervous about how BabyCakes would be received in Orlando, I was confident that everyone would try it out of curiosity and then would become longtime fans, allergies or not. That’s how we won over our fans in NY and LA and it’s happening now in Downtown Disney. B: How did you decide what menu to put together for the Downtown Disney location? EM: I took a look at what products

were popular in general around Disney and decided on a menu that would fit into the average Disney visitor’s palette and taste. Donuts were a must, as well as our bite sized brownies and cookie sandwiches and of course our old hero--the cupcake. I also decided that making this location 100% gluten free was a must. B: What does the future hold for BabyCakes at Downtown Disney? EM: 2011 is the year of expansion for BabyCakes NYC. I am hopeful that Disney will someday let us open all over the Magic Kingdom and that we’ll make our way to Anaheim as well!

“If I Can Make It There”:

Bringing the Black Panther Back to New York By Julian Chambliss Black Panther Images courtesy Marvel Entertainment

David Liss is the author of six novels. Known best for his historical fiction, Liss’ debut novel, A Conspiracy of Paper (2000) was described by Arthur Golden as “A tale of eighteenth century finance, murder, and religion that is a remarkable debut and a thoroughly satisfying novel. His third and newest novel featuring retired pugilist turned “thief-catcher” Benjamin Weaver, The Devil Company was released in paperback in September. With MA from George State University and an unfinished dissertation exploring eighteenth century British literature on his resume, Liss might be seen as a surprise choice to write for comics. Issue #514

Indeed, while a long time comic fan, his first published comic story appeared last year in Daring Mystery Comics 70th Anniversary Special. The story, which gave a never before seen origin to Marvel’s golden age hero, the Phantom Reporter featured art by Jason Armstrong. Liss’ profile has risen with the announcement that at the end of the current Shadowland story arc, Matt Murdock’s Daredevil will once again take a holiday. Murdock’s departure opens the door for a new hero to stalk the means streets of Hell’s Kitchen. The new protector for the quintessential “tough” Marvel neighborhood is none other than T’Challa, the former Black Panther and king of Wakanda. The first black superhero from Marvel, the Black Panther’s debut marked a crucial push for diversity in comic the 1960s. Marvel courted readers with emotive stories, thank you notes, letter pages, and a hip inclusive manner that built a diverse fanbase that made it a distinct entity from DC Comics. Despite this, African Americans were largely absent from comic pages in the early 1960s. In 1966 the Black Panther changed everything. T’Challa was the king of Wakanda, educated in the West and more concerned with protecting his homeland from outside threats than battling crime. Indeed, his costume was not a costume; it is his traditional tribal dress. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Black Panther leads a technologically advanced African nation never conquered by whites. Tapping the zeitgeist of the time, the Panther’s origins, wealth, and motivation represent a subtle acknowledgment of destructive nature of white interaction with Africa.

published book makes sense. The Black Panther has had an up and down publication history in recent memory. A critically acclaim run by writer Christopher Priest and artist Mark Texeira which ran for sixty-two issues between 1998 and 2003. Priest’s run crystallized much of the Black Panther’s back-story and offered a depiction of the character that touched on geopolitics, social issues, and economic questions. In 2005, filmmaker Reginald Hudlin relaunched Black Panther with pencils by fan favorite John Romita Jr. Running for 41 issues between 2005-2008, this volume served as the inspiration for the Black Panther motion comic series. Hudlin’s run continued themes found in Priest’s run, but arguably his characterization of T’Challa offered a more accessible hero and story. The run is also noteworthy for T’Challa marriage, his interaction with other African-American heroes and the integration of elements from classic runs of the Black Panther in 60s and 70s as a scientist and inventor on par with Reed Richard as well as king and warrior. For all the character’s history, T’Challa remains just below the radar for non-comic fans. With Mr. Liss taking over the character and his return to New York in a civilian guise (he previously masqueraded as school teacher during his Avengers run in the early 1970s) I wanted to ask the writer how he is approaching the character and how he sees T’Challa place in Marvel Universe.

I see the story as that of a man who has been through a crisis and now wants to find out what he is made of and who he is when separated from the apparatus that has defined him his entire adult life.

Issue #515

Comic creators, recognizing the symbolism, have used the Panther to address racism, colonialism, and apartheid in memorable storylines since his debut. The Black Panther is for many AfricanAmerican readers (and whites) the first positive depiction of a black person they remember in comics (not the first African American, but first black person). Given the character’s importance, the decision once again have him in regularly

JC: T’Challa has always represented a kind of post-colonial experience. Do you think this matters in terms of your run?

I can say that these issues won’t come into play in the first arc, which is primarily interested in establishing T’Challa in his new role as guardian of Hell’s Kitchen and showing how he deals with his much diminished power set. I happen to be very interested in issues of colonialism and its aftermath, and I would love to have the opportunity to work political themes into my stories, but I need to have an organic reason to do so. Arguably, it’s less easy to come up with ways to deal with the broader political themes

when T’Challa is a vigilante in Hell’s Kitchen instead of an African head of state. On the other hand, New York is a melting pot, and you’ll see right away that I have a number of immigrants in major and minor roles in the first arc, so these issues are never far from my mind. JC: From the description we see about the new title, T’Challa is coming back to New York to “challenge” himself. This is a classic idea of the American experience (“If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere”) How does that affect your approach to the story? The idea of T’Challa challenging himself was a bit of a challenge to me because we’re dealing with a character who is extremely well connected in the Marvel universe -- a former Avenger, temporary member of the Fantastic Four, and married to one of the core X-Men. So in order for the idea to make sense, I felt that T’Challa needed to be determined to take on his challenges alone. He has always been portrayed as a headstrong, proud, stubborn character, so that he would reject all help in order to test his own limits made sense to me. I see the story as that of a man who has been through a crisis and now wants to find out what he is made of and who he is when separated from the apparatus that has defined him his entire adult life. In that sense, this is less of a classic American immigration story than a story of classic American individualism and determination. JC: In the pages of Daredevil, Hell Kitchen has always represented a kind of “rough” urban neighborhood. It is also a community with strong ties among residents. What opportunities do you see to explore T’Challa through that setting? T’Challa is an outsider who needs quickly to become an insider in order to gain an understanding of the neighborhood he has chosen to protect. To that end, I am introducing some new supporting characters who will be vehicles for T’Challa to learn about How do you think you will approach Hell’s Kitchen and how this question? things work there. Like Matt Murdock, T’Challa T’Challa is an This is such a tough will come to see Hell’s outsider who question, which is Kitchen as a place probably why I wantneeds quickly where terrible people ed to do a first arc to become an do terrible things, but that dealt with far ordinary people can do insider in order to more practical issues. amazing things. gain an underFirst of all, as you’ve already pointed out, standing of the JC: Race has always T’Challa is an Afrineighborhood he played a part in the can, not an AfricanBlack Panther, either as has chosen to American, and so he unspoken element or protect. is likely to experience explicit story element.

Issue #516

American race relations very differently than would, say, Luke Cage or Falcon. Secondly, the landscape of American raceawareness has changed so much in the last decade -- first with 9/11 shifting white American anxieties from the internal other to the external other, and secondly with the Obama presidency, which has seemingly authorized coded (and often not-coded) public expressions of racism. When you consider how certain conservative voices have accused Obama of

being an agent of “anti-colonialism,” it seems to me there are certainly opportunities to tie many of these threads together. I may or may not have a clear sense of how I want to do this -- future story arcs are top secret -- but I can say that it is definitely something that is on my mind. I don’t see any reason why a specific story arc must deal with race or political issues, but I think if I let an entire run pass without grappling with some of these things, it would be rightly viewed as a missed opportunity. the power of pee wee: A play by Play Account As a kid, “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse” and “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” opened up a world of exploration, fantasy and intrigue. “The Pee-Wee Herman Show” was on Broadway back in October and had every adult feeling like a little kid again. Before attending the show in NYC - and being a tad social media obsessed - I checked in on Foursquare and earned a special Pee-Wee Herman badge. As the Broadway show came to a close, Mr. Herman surprised loyal Foursquare followers with an “invite only” bowling party. Immediate reactions could be heard in the form of the secret word — “AHHHH!” When we get inside Bowlmor Lanes in Times Square we wandered around and found the bar. I had Pee-Wee themed “Cactus Cocktail” which was delicious (recipe on brinkmag. tumblr.com)! After about an hour or so of hanging out with some of Pee-Wee’s biggest fans, he emerged! He did an impromptu Q&A, answered some silly questions, and told some stories. He was asked

about the new movie that he’s making with comedy movie superstar Judd Apatow. Pee-Wee said that he had two scripts ready to go, but Apatow hated them, so a new script is in the works. Pee Wee was grateful for his rekindled success and new found fans. Good for you, Pee-Wee! Bravo!

Our featured Almost Famous artist comes from the music land of Nashville Tennessee. I came across them many years ago in a different project and watched them grow into the band they are now Flight Case For Sushi. Expect to hear some buzz from these guys this year with their new deal as the first rock band signed with Akon’s label Kon Live. How did you form Flight Case for Sushi? Dax: It kinda started with Me, Blair, and Mikey just wanting to make an album. We didn’t have a band, management, label, anything. I just had some ideas for a few songs and together we just made an album and decided we should put a band together, put the album out to see if anyone else dug it as much as we did, and take it from there. Once Ty came along and we wanted to start playing out live, we figured we probably needed a band name! Blair: Yeah, Dax, Mikey & I had spent many years in another band that had a few near misses but never quite got to where it needed

to go to maintain. After that we regrouped and decided to make the best album we could on our own & for ourselves. There was no objective other than to make something that we could listen back on and be proud of. It was also a great documentation of where we were all in our lives at that time. And for me I cant say it was a particular happy place. There was to much uncertainty surrounding the whole thing. But the whole experience of making that record and what transpired that year became the foundation for Flight Case For Sushi. We then pulled Ty in and started building Flight Case from the ground up. The name was essential and a huge part of gaining a fan base relatively quickly after the band was formed.

Trash humpers Writer-director Harmony (writer of the devastating Kids, director of Julien Donkey-Boy) Korine’s Trash Humpers is out on video extremely ugly, cheap video, which suits the film perfectly. It’s the sometimes funny, nonnarrative “story” of two old men and one old woman who go around their town mindlessly destroying things, cackling, “dancing,” cursing, laughing at kids, getting down with overweight, naked prostitutes and yes, humping trash cans, trees, fences, whatever. The home video-like footage features video rolls, glitches and massive grain. As in Gummo (still Korine’s best film), there are the truly brainless rural locals on display as extras and just when the flick starts to get repetitious/almost boring, it ends — and H.K.’s script endings have always been interesting. If you like his other stuff, you can sit thru this -- if not, it’s for you hardcore weird/nonHollywood/indie-film lovers only. — Kris Gilpin

Peter & Max: A Fables Novel by Bill Willingham This book is perfect for those that are obsessed with the Fable comic book series and those who have never heard of Fables. With that being said, you don’t need to know anything about Fables to understand and enjoy Peter & Max. It tells the story of Peter Piper and his older brother, Max. Peter & Max is fantastically written and more than just a fairytale. — Katie Bassham Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People by Amy Sedaris A companion to Sedaris’s first book, I Like You, Simple Times is a hilarious collection of crafts that anyone can do regardless of your crafty ability. There’s a section on “Rabbit Proofing Your Home” and another section recommending things to make as gifts for your Favorite Aunt (Pencil Can), Gift for Dad (Scrap Stamp Box), and Gifts for Someone You Are Dating Who Is at Least 18 Years Younger Than You (Gingham Bottoms). — Katie Bassham

Welcome to the Rileys Jake Scott’s 2nd feature, Welcome to the Rileys, is a good character piece and it’s good to see that he hasn’t followed in the over-production of his father’s (Ridley Scott) recent historical bores, or the sometimes MTVish over-editing of his uncle Tony’s action epics. James Gandolfini (always a good actor) leaves his wife, Melissa Leo (great here), goes to N’Orleans for business, and meets a young stripper (Kristen Stewart, who proves again she really can act when not walking thru a Twilight bore-fest) who reminds him of their late daughter, so he decides to stay there and look after her for a while. As already noted, the acting is all very good and just when you fear the story will be wrapped up in a typically neat, forced Hollytrite bow, which would’ve ruined the film, thank God it isn’t. If you want a quiet little drama one night, it’s worthy of a rental. — Kris Gilpin

accessory. All you need is that and afterwards all eyes will be on you - trust me! LM: How do you think women feel about most men’s style? RJ: I think that most women feel that a lot of men styles are quite boring, most stores that sell men’s clothing target more of the status quo commercially and there aren’t many stores that will take the creative risk, because of negative response they feel they will receive. This is why boutiquing is such a critical factor to the success of businesses like Posh. I create pieces that allow men the creative control to dress fashionable and affordable, “It shouldn’t cost a fortunate to be Posh” Men’s style is quite blah to be honest and women sense that and feel that there is nothing to him, because expressing yourself says a lot about your attitude. Women are up on their fashion game, so fellas step your game up and try one of our bowties and watch the response and attention you receive. LM: Why do you feel your business is necessary? RJ: I feel Posh is needed, because it exemplifies hope, inspiration and most importantly love! Not many people can say that about their business and the return of my investment is a positive impact on my generation to let the younger generation know that anything is possible.

LM: What’s the future for Poshion LLC? RJ: Four years ago, Posh started as a mere dream that was created into something larger than expected. The dream soon developed into a reality like no other, changing the way men would be represented in fashion forever. Ultimately, our goal is to be a successful enterprise which in return will promote success, inspiration and guidance that will benefit our young ones that are in need the most. The future for Posh looks very promising and we are moving into a direction where we can tap into just about every market in the fashion world. Look out for Posh kids, Posh cardigans, Posh socks, Posh scarves, Posh shirts and jeans just to name a few things in the works. The brand is born! Eventually, Posh will be a household name around your home and the fashion world. Again, we want to thank all of our clients and business partners who understand our vision and backing us up 100-percent. Warm up! Much Love, Rob Jones-owner www.poshion.com

Four years ago, a 30 something Rob Jones had a dream — a dream to redefine and live differently. A self-proclaimed fashion junkie he noticed the mediocrity seen in men’s fashion. He felt what was seen in most men’s stores and what men themselves were wearing was mundane and fads that didn’t represent how a man should be seen. Rob wanted to represent himself as confident and sophisticated in a world filled with White T’s and saggy pants. He started to think and put together a vision and speak with those closest to him. His visions began to form and that formation took on the name of “Poshion Bowties.” ¶ Rob declares that Poshion Bowties was trusted by instinct and inspiration through music the severe urge to fill a gap in fashion. Now in the fourth year of solidifying his brand as one to be recognized and embraced, “Posh” as he likes to be called, is the new heavy hitter in men’s accessories. Posh wants every man to feel that “wow” factor when he leaves the house. Once you see what the hype is all about you’ll want a small piece of Posh’s dream too. Much Love, Rob Jones-owner, www.poshion.com

TJ: In the ever changing music industry it’s always a challenge to create timeless music while remaining relevant. We have created a standard of original music that crosses most genres mixed with a unique business approach that sets apart from the competition.

Lipstick Mixtapes: What’s the most important piece in your wardrobe when getting ready for a date? Trackoholic Jay: Whenever I’m getting ready for a date, the most important piece to my wardrobe has to be the choice of cologne. Just the smell alone can captivate your date instantly off contact. That’s a winner to me.

LM: What’s it like being stood up on a date? TJ: Actually the closest I’ve come to being stood up on a date is being cancelled on. I can only imagine asking for the tab for two glasses of water. Haha…

LM: How do you think women feel about most men’s style? TJ:I think that women are typically disappointed by the mass amounts of fads and trendy styles amongst men these days, when all it takes is a classic look mixed with swagger to compliment any beautiful woman’s style. LM: Why do you feel your business is necessary?

LM: What does 2011 hold for the Trackoholics? TJ: After having our most successful year to date in 2010, we started 2011 off by being nominated for Orlando’s “Producers of The Year” at the Orlando Hip Hop Awards, and are releasing our first album “Trackoholics Anonymous” featuring a lot of our records we have produced for artists over the past few months. We are also currently working with a few major labels and songwriters on new material and are working towards landing our own publishing or production deal. Just expect more music and influence around the city! Greatness!

Honestly Yours: Live Hart

How did you get your start in music? I read in your bio that you started in a group called “Urbanesque.” Actually, music started for me when I was 8 years old. That was the age my father introduced me to my first instrument which was the guitar. From there, I played the alto saxophone and trombone throughout middle school and all through high school. When I moved down to Florida is when I met the girls. We later formed the group Urbanesque and signed with Titanium Records, managed by Veit Renn. I had the best time of my life working in that environment. We had a lot of fun and we really learned a lot from each other. Looking back, the experience was priceless!

“Music started for me when I was 8 years old. That was the age my father introduced me to my first instrument which was the guitar.” are musicians the world hasn’t even heard about yet, but will. The fearless open mic artist, the coffee shop player, those people inspire me. On a more mainstream level, artist like Bruno Mars, Justin Nozuka, Ben Harper, Lauryn Hill assures me that my music has a place in the world. Do you have a dream collaboration? I would really like to work with Gabe Bondoc! He’s a singer/ songwriter I discovered while I was surfing YouTube. I just love what he does musically. His chord voicing and progressions are genius. I think he’s from another planet. He’s gifted! Can you elaborate on the “Feel Good Music Project?” The ‘Feel Good Music Project’ is an opportunity for you to become a part of my upcoming album. For more information visit www.livehartonline.com

What’s the inspiration behind your song, “Please Don’t Say it’s Over? During the time that I wrote ‘Please Don’t Say It’s Over’, I was nearing the end of a relationship that I really didn’t want to believe was over, but it was. I felt that putting my feelings into song would help me move past the rejection; and it did! Works every time, *wink*! Do you think that “Please Don’t we can become so closed in by Say it’s Over” is your favorite our feelings that we think we’re song from your catalog? If I had the only one on the planet going children…that’s kind of asking me, through it. This isn’t true. We all “Do you have a favorite son or go through the same emotions, daughter?” My answer would be no. I so it’s really important to know love what I that you’re never do. I love alone. If I’m able to write to touch at least “I love what I do. I love and one person with turn an to write and turn an this message, that emotion would be a mission emotion into a melody.” into a accomplished! melody. The process for me is almost like child birth because I go so deep within myself to find what’s there. Therefore, all my songs are special or favorites of mine because I work so hard to conceive them.

The track, “This is Me,” is like an anthem for empowerment – is that the feeling you were trying to convey? Definitely! ‘This is Me’ is a song that confirms to everyone that they are not alone in what her or she may be going through. Sometimes,

Static Pop Culture Boutique Years ago there were plenty of little culture boutiques here in Orlando that thrived on the business of the citizens of the “city beautiful.” When the economy seemed to implode in 2008-2009, most of those boutiques soon vanished and we were only left with a handful of men’s and women’s shops. Static Pop Culture Boutique has been around for 20 years and shows no sign of slowing down. When walking into the relocated shop (from Orlando Ave to

University Blvd) it’s hard not to notice the store is filled to the brim with inventory. From Fred & Friends toaster stamps and David

& Goliath oversized postcards to hundreds of band and concert tee’s – this place is a mecca for all things trendy. Men’s

and Women’s clothing share the floor and accessories line the square central counter. Static also houses hundreds of great gift ideas for any occasion. Stop by Static today and check out what they might have for your inner hippie/trendsetter/ band freak/every day person and help support your very own little culture boutique.

year, the guys behind Diversitile Custom Clothing experienced how quickly business can boom beyond the Central Florida scene. When the new Iron Man sequel came to theaters, Chris Campbell, Rich Gordon, and John Terramoccia were inspired to make a few pairs of custom sneakers based on War Machine and Iron Man’s armor. Blogs and other outlets of the tech, film, comic, and sneaker communities caught wind of the sneakers and soon the emails were pouring in. “We were getting an email every two minutes. My Blackberry was vibrating like crazy- like the commercial where the whole network is calling, like that.” (Gordon shakes his phone on the table to demonstrate.) Marvel quickly sent them an email stating they must cease and desist selling their sneakers ASAP because of copyright laws,

The clothing line is meant to be a more affordable way to support the custom-shoe company. Four to five years ago when the graduates of the University of Central Florida originally tried to appeal to the college market, Campbell and Gordon began to understand that not everyone can afford to customize sneakers that are expensive to begin with. A custom job from Diversitile, which includes the sneaker, can cost between $200 and $600 depending on the request and how much time it takes to complete. Many of their orders are local, but most of them come from outside buyers. “Orlando is growing as far as fashion on the

whole, but people aren’t that open,” Gordon says. “A part of the problem is the tourism. A lot of people come but don’t stay here,” Campbell adds. “Other companies like us are going against the grain. There are some boutiques and places that are upand-coming, but we survive by people buying online.” Diversitile also credits some of their success to teamwork, because most shoe customs are operated by one person. Having three people adds to the creative and business processes, both of which the company is serious about. And when it comes to using that creativity for other people’s ideas, to say the least, they get a lot of interesting requests. “We had to design this shoe for a doctor,” Campbell says. “He asked us to make a carton version of him fighting off viruses, like evil viruses. He wanted to be holding an I.V. See, on this side he’s fighting them and on the other shoe he’s in a field with his team.” “A lot of times we’ll get another idea from a customer’s idea,” Campbell says. “So many people don’t want to wear the shoes! We consider it wearable art,” says Gordon. “We want the shoe to get old.” Above expanding their custom shoes and even above the creative process, is a love of what they do. When presented with the “Desist” shoe and pressing the LED light, “Cool!” slips out past what would normally be objective lips. A smile grew on Gordon and Cambell’s faces. Clearly, there is also a desire that other people love what they do too. www.diversitile.com

J’s Everyday Fashion: Brazilian Moda

J’s

Everyday Fashion is a blog dedicated to discovering and executing “functional, easy and affordable” looks seen in the pages of your favorite magazines (ahem!). Check out what J has to say about (borrowed) Brazilian Moda fashions and how she works it out. I recently teamed up with Brazilian Moda to create three examples of how you can easily transition your workout clothes into a cute outfit for running errands. Check out their site, www. brazilianmoda.com for more information!

LOOK 1

LOOK 1 Extra long top with LOOK 2 unique back, $58 Supplex basic capri, $56 How I did it: This look is perfect for days when you didn’t sweat a lot and are running out the door. Just throw on a hooded sweater over your shirt (way cuter than a hooded sweatshirt) and switch out your gym shoes for some fuzzy boots. You instantly look comfy chic!

enough for errands). I also threw on a vest from Brazilian Moda (second picture), and snow boots and a puffer jacket (third picture). Which look is your favorite?

LOOK 2 Supplex Long Tank with crisscross back, $46 Supplex basic capri, $56 How I did it: After a super-sweaty workout, I always recommend removing your shirt to prevent breakouts. But don’t just throw on a ratty old t-shirt. Step up your game by wearing an inexpensive graphic t-shirt from Forever 21 or Gap. Throw on an army jacket for more coverage, and boots to brave the snow!

LOOK 3 Supplex Long Top cut on the sides,

“I’m just an everyday girl, bridging the gap between fashion fantasy and clothes for everyday life! ”

How I did it: I changed out of my sweaty shirt and into a printed top from Brazilian Moda. This top is the perfect cross between workout clothes (so you don’t mind if it gets sweaty) and streetwear (looks cute

hey say you can tell a lot about a woman by what’s in her handbag. Fumi helps with the rest. The statement on Fumi’s website reads, “at FUMI, Inc. we are dedicated to providing solutions to everyday problems with Fashionable, Unique, Multipurpose and Innovative products” and that’s exactly what they have accomplished with their multifunctional accessories.

Fumi was established in 2007 with the intent to create and manufacture multipurpose items for everyday problems while making it look good. Hundreds of products from purse hooks to sunglass cloth cleaners as well as hand bags and “must have items under $20” are available on the Fumi website. The idea behind most of the Fumi products is to create a multipurpose all in one item, i.e. a bracelet turns into a purse hook and a purse accessory turns into a sunglass cleaning cloth. The attention to detail that has gone into each item is the most intriguing with the use of crystals, various silk

fabric types, and overall craftsmanship. If you can tell a lot by a woman by what’s in her hand bag, then it’s time to start looking at what’s holding the hand bag in place. www.pursehook.net

eing on the sparkling brink of the New Year, so filled with promise and new beginnings, I want to address the importance that personal grooming can have on one’s pursuit of happiness in life. What is on the inside does matter most, but the physical person you present to the world can drastically affect your health, wealth and social life. Because women are drilled about physical maintenance practically from birth I direct the following towards the gentlemen out there who might, er, overlook some of the basic-but oh so important--daily rituals of personal hygiene. Let’s go over a few points often neglected by today’s busy modern man:

{

Teeth – When visiting a male friend’s bathroom it is not uncommon to encounter their toothbrush hanging there with the bristles so worn and splayed out it looks as though it was used to scrub grout. This is not only unseemly it is unhealthy. Do not skimp on buying a new toothbrush when your old one starts to look worn—we are talking about a

couple of bucks here. Also, we are all adults now and therefore must FLOSS daily…no one will want to kiss you if your teeth are crammed with remnants of last night’s kung pao chicken. Ears – How many times in my single-girl past did I find myself flirting with a handsome man, thinking about how I’d how like to

Breath – I’d love to see stats on how many men have unwittingly forfeited a chance to get laid simply because their breath stank. If you are following the aforementioned dental hygiene, congratulations, you’re already half way there. Just make sure you are also brushing your tongue really good too since that is where a lot of the bacteria that causes cryptbreath lingers. Next step is to always carry breath mints with you and use them. And if you smoke, well for chrissakes, just stop because that is making everything horrible—least of all your breath! Here’s to 2011 full of whitetoothed, fresh-breathed charming men and may they all have naughty sweet things whispered into their squeaky clean ears!
