Deer Valley beats Pittsburg in thriller by Michael Dixon Correspondent In a high-scoring game highlighted by several shifts of momentum, Deer Valley kept its perfect season going with a 35-33 win against defending BVAL champion Pittsburg. Wolverine quarterback Kristoff Williams sprinted for a 55-yard touchdown run on a keeper with 1:18 left in the game. Julio Villegas kicked his fifth of five successful PAT attempts for a 35-27 lead. With just one timeout remaining, Pittsburg appeared to have little chance – until Pittsburg return man Tracy Clark returned the kickoff to the Deer Valley 4-yard line. On fourth and goal, quarterback Julius Mozee scored on a quarterback draw that cut the Deer Valley lead to 35-33 with 38 seconds remaining. The Wolverines’ Brandon Williams stopped Clark on the two-point conversion. When the Pittsburg onside kick failed to travel 10 yards, Deer Valley gained possession and ran the clock out to preserve the win. The two-point conversion tackle wasn’t Brandon Williams’ only contribution to the Wolverines cause. After the Pirates jumped to a 13-0 first-quarter lead on a pair of two-yard touchdown runs from Breon Butler, Deer Valley got on the board with an 18-yard touchdown run from Sean Combs that was sprung by a tremendous block thrown by Williams. Brandon Williams came through again on third and 15 from the Deer Valley 31 on a

a 74-yard pass. Two plays later, Brandon Williams scored on a five-yard touchdown that cut the Wolverine deficit to 27-21. After a missed Pittsburg field goal gave the Wolverines the ball on their own 20, Behr connected with Kristoff Williams and Williams ran the rest of the way for the score to regain the lead 28-27. Deer Valley Coach Rich Woods was jubilant after the game. “I could give every one of them a big kiss,” he said. “You’ve got to have a lot of trust to put a second-string quarterback in and score 21 points. (Behr) threw the ball, he ran the offense, and he really did a great job. Then Kris went in and ran the option, he really had a great play. He is just an awesome athlete.” Kristoff Williams said, “I’m really proud of the team; we’ve been working hard. This is our first win against Pitt in four years.” On playing receiver, he added, “I’m just trying to do what’s best for the team right now. I played there last year, and they had problems with the pass defense.” Woods also said, “That was a team effort all the way. You’ve got to give Pittsburg a ton of credit. They put a great game plan together and kind of ran the ball around us. They gave us some big plays, we gave them some big plays and that ended up being the difference. When it came down to crunch time, they made the plays.” Deer Valley (7-0, 2-0) hosts Liberty (3-31, 0-2) Friday night while Pittsburg (3-4, 1-1) will travel to Freedom (0-7, 0-2).
