Goldoni wrote La bancarotta when he was Consul of Genoa to Venice and notes: “Started my new job with the knowledge of traders, not to mention that feeling of failure. And I saw that those who were retreating, they cut the rope or who were arrested, had their ruin only ambition, recklessness, to vice. I spread my horizon to the people of the law, throwing dust in the eyes of creditors, fraudulent bankrupts gave their time to make their failures more lucrative and secure”. Third comedy of Goldoni, La bancarotta, written in ���� and performed at the Teatro San Samuele in Venice, met a great success. It is one of the plays most markedly marks the transition from the old to the new theater of the Commedia dell'Arte theater that begins to make its way through the reform of Goldoni.

Goldoni scrisse La bancarotta quando era Console di Genova a Venezia e annota: “Iniziato nel mio nuovo impiego alla conoscenza dei commercianti, non sentivo parlare che di fallimenti. E vedevo che quelli che si ritiravano, che tagliavano la corda o che si facevano arrestare, dovevano la loro rovina solamente all’ambizione, alla sregolatezza, al vizio. Allargai il mio orizzonte fino alle persone di legge che, gettando polvere negli occhi dei creditori, davano il tempo ai bancarottieri fraudolenti di rendere i loro fallimenti più lucrativi e sicuri”. Terza commedia di Goldoni, La bancarotta, scritta nel ���� e rappresentata al Teatro San Samuele di Venezia, conobbe un grande successo di pubblico. È una delle commedie che più marcatamente segna il passaggio dal vecchio teatro della Commedia dell’Arte al nuovo teatro che comincia a farsi strada proprio attraverso la riforma goldoniana.
