ANNUAL REPORT 2017 FISCAL YEAR October 1, 2016–September 30, 2017 ANNE-MARIE MCDERMOTT, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JENNIFER TEISINGER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

DEAR MUSIC FANS,

A N N E-M A R I E McDERMOT T Artistic Director

This Annual Report of the Bravo! Vail Music Festival looks back on 2017 and a celebratory 30th season of exceptional live classical music performances and educational activities for people of all ages. It is also a window into 30 years of hard work, passion, and commitment on behalf of the Vail Valley community that has successfully partnered with local and international networks of supporters, artists, and music lovers. Every note resonated with the power of the many individuals who have given time and talent to create and sustain a world-class music festival. Each of them has our gratitude. From the opening performance with violinist Joshua Bell leading the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in the world premiere of the first of five Bravo! Vail commissions, to Jaap van Zweden’s last Rite of Spring as Music Director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, to Beethoven’s monumental 9th symphony, led by Alan Gilbert in his final Vail concert as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, the Festival attracted packed audiences at the beautiful Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater.

JENNIFER TEISINGER Executive Director

Bravo’s history is rooted in chamber music which flourished in communities up and down the valley last summer: sold-out concerts at the Donovan Pavilion; standing room only concerts in interfaith chapels and senior centers; serenades in hospitals; packed brewery concerts with new audiences; and soirées in private homes. The music continued into educational settings that included workshops for high school musicians, concerts for young audiences at valley libraries and, for the first time, concerts designed especially for families presented in April. Music education continues year-round in the highly regarded After School Piano Program which saw a 50% increase in enrollment last year. Bravo! Vail is here to foster a life-long appreciation for the arts through music. None of it could happen without the dedication and unwavering support of the many people who adore this festival. To Bravo’s Board of Trustees, Advisory Council, and Guild, thank you for your time, energy, and commitment. To Bravo’s devoted donors and audiences, thank you for your support and enthusiasm. We are deeply grateful to you for making it all possible.

years ago, Bravo! Vail opened its doors with three concerts and a vision to bring great music to Vail. Today, that vision has blossomed into a summer home to the world’s finest musicians and ensembles, with dozens of performances and expanding engagement programs for all ages. The 2017 season was truly a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, with exciting new initiatives to kick off the next 30 years for Bravo! Vail. Four of the greatest orchestras of our time performed some of the most powerful masterworks ever written. Two maestros led their final Vail concerts as music directors of both Dallas and New York. Five commissioned works received their world premieres. Not to mention unique pops shows, debuting soloists, innovative chamber programs, and delightful family programs, all in spectacular settings throughout the Vail Valley.
