Preventative maintenance the key to reducing downtime

No one is better qualified to look after your pride and joy than the experts at our service departments located in three convenient locations; Derrimut, Campbellfield and Dandenong. No matter which location you choose you’ll receive the same expert advice and attention to detail. Our highly experienced service technicians are all experts in their fields and factory supported training provided by Isuzu, MAN and Western Star ensures they are kept up to date with the latest service and repair techniques. We have forty two new service bays at Derrimut and twenty eight at Dandenong, all fitted with the latest diagnostic and service equipment including a live in-ground electronic brake tester and electric truck lifting equipment. These modern features ensure our customers get their trucks serviced and repaired with the utmost speed and efficiency.

In addition to truck servicing we also cater for trailer servicing and repairs and any auto-electrical repair requirements. At Derrimut four wash bays are used to wash vehicles once completed and serviced. In keeping with the environmental profile of the building, the bays are supplied by 90,000 litres of harvested rain water. For the comfort and convenience of our driver customers, all our locations feature a dedicated lounge where you’ll find comfortable seating along with TV, a range of magazines and coffee and tea making facilities. At Derrimut we even have motel-style rooms to allow drivers some comfortable rest and recuperation time whilst their vehicles are being serviced. We also offer a 24-hour breakdown service to get you and your truck back on the road fast. “The effective and efficient service and repair of your truck is essential to maintain

it in top condition and ensure its resale value is optimised. And no one is better qualified to look after your pride and joy than the staff at Westar and Patterson Cheney,” said Westar Derrimut Service Manager, Anthony Verdini. “We have access to a massive range of trucks right on our doorstep every day of the year. All those trucks we service provide us with the best information possible regarding preventative maintenance. All that information gets passed onto our customers, keeping them on the road and their cost of repairs down. Any time a truck owner comes into one of our dealerships they have access to a world of truck information” added Patterson Cheney Service Manager, Wayne Murphy. So when you’re looking for someone to service your truck don’t accept second best. Make sure you bring your truck back to us – you can rest assured you’ll be in good hands.

Victorian Freight Specialists CEO Jonathan Rowe (middle) and Director Chris Collins, accepting delivery of their new CNG Isuzu from Westar Sales Consultant Luke Dymott.

Victorian Freight Specialists

take delivery of their first CNG powered Isuzu Long time Westar customer, Victorian Freight Specialists (VFS) has just taken delivery of their first Isuzu Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) truck.

CNG also offers a significant cost benefit with the price of CNG generally between 30 and 50% less than the equivalent price of diesel.

CNG is made by compressing natural gas to less than one per cent of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure.

VFS specialise in the cartage of general freight overnight throughout country Victoria. They operate out of two Melbourne terminals in Laverton and Dandenong and also service a network of thirty country agents located across depots in Victoria.

CNG burns cleaner and more efficiently than diesel and contributes far less to air pollution, especially in particulate matter (PM) emissions. Approximately 40% of air pollution comes from motor vehicles in the form of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOC), PM as well as other contaminants. Vehicles using CNG show reductions of around 50% of NOx, 98% of VOC’s and 60% of PM (Isuzu CNG engines emit zero PM).

The Isuzu NPR 300 CNG will be used primarily on metro and outer metro routes. VFS currently have over 30 company owned Isuzus on the fleet, coupled with another dozen or so operated by subcontractors who work regularly with VFS – all fitted with tautliner bodies.

“Reliability is a byword for Isuzu” said VFS Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Rowe, “I haven’t looked back since buying the first one and wouldn’t hesitate buying them in the future.” Jonathan said that the company was keen to do what it could to reduce its environmental footprint and the purchase of the new Isuzu CNG truck was an important stepping stone in relation to this policy. “Providing this CNG model performs as well as we expect, additional Isuzu CNG trucks will certainly be on the agenda,” Jonathan added. Isuzus the backbone of Cool Rentals truck fleet

Cool Rentals specialises in the rental and hire of refrigerated vans and trucks throughout Melbourne and selected areas of regional Victoria. Operating from its head office at Dandenong South since 2006, the business has steadily grown to a fleet of more than 30 vehicles including a dozen Isuzu N & F Series models. 4

TRUCK FORCE | NOVEMBER 2011

The company rents to a wide range of customers over both short and long term rentals. There is a wide cross section of customers ranging from large businesses requiring additional trucks to handle increased capacity and seasonal peaks, to individuals who need a one off refrigerated vehicle to transport and store food/drink products for markets and events. One of the benefits of all Cool Rentals trucks and vans is that they have electric standby, enabling them to be plugged in to a normal power source at the trucks destination thereby negating the need to keep the engine running. Other specialist

equipment includes internal walls for dual temperature loads, tailgates and printable temperature recorders. By necessity, reliability and durability are absolute givens in the rental business and it was this that initially attracted Cool Rentals owner, Peter McGahey to consider Isuzu. “The reliability has been outstanding – the trucks are worked pretty hard and they have stood the test of time very well,” Peter said. Peter also wanted to ensure that the service back up and support was also first rate and this was another attraction of Patterson Cheney Isuzu and in particular

its 24 hour servicing facility and wide and quick parts availability. “Quick service and fast response times are very important to me and this is something Patterson Cheney does very well – after any scheduled service or repair my trucks are back on the road quickly. The sales staff are also excellent and they look after me very well for all my day to day needs,” Peter went on to say.

“Good resale value is also an important factor in selecting Isuzu and having traded in a number of Isuzus I am happy to report that this has held true,” said Peter.

Peter has moved progressively to specifying automatic transmission with any new truck purchase. All the smaller N series models which tend to do more start/stop driving are fitted with Isuzu’s renowned Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) providing renters with an easy and relaxed driving experience. The comfort and extensive range of standard features within the cab is yet another important part of selecting Isuzu.

WESTERN STAR

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES

TASMANIAN HORSE TRANSPORT & WESTERN STAR PROVE A WINNING COMBINATION

Tasmanian Horse Transport (THT), a stud cattle farm and horse transport company run by Hayley Sheehan and her mother Ginette, is located at Latrobe on the scenic North West coast of Tasmania.

The company specialises in transporting a wide cross section of horses including racehorses and stallions from all areas of Tasmania to its base at Latrobe. A number of horses are transferred to the mainland and then on to a number of different destinations across the Eastern seaboard, including a regular weekly run to Brisbane via Sydney. THT headquarters’ close proximity to Devonport is a bonus for quick and easy access to the Devonport/Melbourne ferry. Hayley purchased her Western Star last year primarily for the long-haul run to Brisbane. In her own words, she wanted something that was ‘built to last and holds its value’ and the Western Star was really the only contender.

6

TRUCK FORCE | NOVEMBER 2011

The seats are incredibly comfortable and going down the road it’s just so quiet. There’s just so much room in the Stratosphere cab too.

“I wanted a comfortable truck that I could dress up – one that would really stand out from other horse transporters. Western Star had a good reputation and I really liked the fact that I could get the Star with a Detroit – that was a big attraction,” Hayley said. Hayley’s initial contact for the purchase of the Star was through Westar’s Tasmanian rep, Phil Salter and the truck was ultimately purchased through Westar Derrimut where Hayley returns for servicing. Having lived with the Star for a while now, Hayley singles out the comfort and quietness

of the truck as two of its most outstanding attributes. “The seats are incredibly comfortable and going down the road it’s just so quiet. There’s just so much room in the Stratosphere cab too,” Hayley said. Hayley is a fanatic when it comes to the maintenance of her truck – and with good reason. With her precious cargo she cannot afford to run the risk of a breakdown so preventative maintenance is her mantra. “We strictly adhere to ensuring all service and maintenance requirements are carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended intervals – we never take short cuts in this area,” Hayley went onto say. Hayley also has a philosophy of keeping her Western Star in immaculate condition on the outside and this is clearly evident from the gleaming custom blue paintwork which was the colour that Hayley chose specially. “I’m the only one that washes it, the only one that cleans it and I’m the only one that drives it – that’s why it looks so damn good!” Hayley added. Coming from a farming background, Hayley grew up around trucks and heavy duty equipment and had held a truck license for many years so obtaining her semi license was something of a natural progression.

The custom built trailer is specially designed to carry and protect up to sixteen horses and keep them in the utmost comfort – Hayley is a stickler for providing hygiene and cleanliness for her valuable cargo so the trailer is kept in immaculate condition. The trailer features innovations such as air-cool which ensures the horses have access to the freshest air and an automatic watering system to keep them fully hydrated. A camera in the trailer coupled to a monitor in the cab allows Hayley to keep a continual eye of the horses. State of the art stabling at Latrobe ensures the horses are fully rested and calm prior to the Bass Strait sea crossing and THT also has stabling in Melbourne and Sydney to cater to the large number of horses that require interstate transport. The business has achieved steady growth over the last few years and THT’s growing reputation for offering five star horse transport means that business can only continue to go one way. ISUZU D-MAX

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES

Isuzu D-Max proving a winner for both work and play

Having operated a petrol engined Ute since he started his own business six years ago, Vince was keen to experience the many benefits that a diesel engine provides including durability, high torque and most importantly, outstanding fuel economy.

Vince Failla is the owner of South Coral, a residential garden and lawn care company based in Rosebud on the Mornington Peninsula. 8

TRUCK FORCE | NOVEMBER 2011

“I tow a trailer that is filled with an assortment of garden care equipment including a ride-on mower. It weighs in at around 1 tonne and this, along with the stop/start nature of my business meant I was using a lot of petrol – so a diesel was the logical choice when the time came to look for a new Ute,” Vince said. Vince took a look around the various Utes that were available but was attracted to

D-Max for a number of reasons, including the powerful yet economical 3 litre diesel engines plus D-Max’s many standard features and high equipment levels. After coming to the conclusion that D-Max was the best Ute available, he eventually purchased a limited edition 4x2 Dual Cab X-Runner the day before Easter this year. Vince loves the cab comfort and in particular the leather seats. “I love the feel of the leather, the seats are just so comfortable - I don’t know how I lived without it before!” said Vince. But Vince saves his highest praise for the fuel economy of D-Max. “The difference in terms of how much fuel I now use

compared to the old vehicle is just incredible – I’m getting a phenomenal mileage from a tank of fuel. The torque of the engine is also excellent and this makes for a really relaxed driving experience,” Vince said. To say that Vince is pleased with his new D-Max is something of an understatement. “I’m absolutely stoked with it – the engine performs so well and it’s just so economical. It also looks magnificent in white,” Vince went on to say. “The reassurance of a 3 year/100,000km warranty and 3 year roadside assist was another great feature,” Vince added.

Whilst the D-Max is primarily a work vehicle for during the week, being a dual cab it quickly converts into a family vehicle and is pressed into action most weekends to carry the family, an assortment of bikes and fishing gear and to tow Vince’s boat. “My wife and kids love the D-Max – it’s a really comfortable vehicle especially with the leather seats,” said Vince. Vince also praises the professionalism and attention to detail of staff at Patterson Cheney. He recounts the story of how when he was initially looking around at different Utes he was promised an email with all the vehicle details from a couple of Dealerships – but only Patterson Cheney actually

bothered to send the material through. Vince plans to keep taking his D-Max back to Patterson Cheney for servicing having already had both the 3,000 and 10,000km services completed. Vince’s enthusiasm for the D-Max must be infectious. After a couple of weeks of hearing about Vince’s D-Max his next door neighbor went out and bought his very own D-Max. Stand by, this street in Rosebud could soon be full of D-Max’s! Contact: T: 0409 125 959 E: southcoral@bigpond.com Image: D-Max with Vince and son Paul
