Kawartha Lakes resident Rob McCaig is a Boomer.

Fifty-four, married with two grown children, he likes the good things in life: quiet country living, boating, fishing, photography, golf, baseball and football. But he also knows how to work hard.

With a diploma in Marketing and certificates in Advertising Management, Radio Marketing, Professional Selling and Breakthrough Creative, he has spent the last 35 years building a career in the media, advertising and the retail sectors. Rob's understanding of the Boomer demographic - from a consumer and marketing perspective - coupled with his extensive background in newspapers, magazines, radio and TV make Boomer's Lifestyle Media the best choice for our audience and advertisers.

Candace was born and raised on a dairy farm in rural North Durham. Passionate about art since childhood, she began to think seriously about a creative career while attending Port Perry High School, then went on to study Graphic Design at Durham College. Upon graduation, Candace spent 12 years working at the Nielsen Company of Canada, where she honed her skills as a designer and developed a keen understanding of marketing and communications strategy. Today, Candace enjoys working closely with businesses in her community, helping them to develop a broad range of media that connect them with their customers through traditional marketing, website, print and social media platforms. The Home Coming

W

hen you think about renowned Canadian artist Walter Campbell there is a good chance that historical and nostalgic images of a gentler time will come to mind. And that is great. That is exactly what Walter wants to project, but he further explains that they are not just images or paintings.

“My paintings tell a story,” Walter explains. For example, as I look at his latest commission for the TTC entitled The Church and Wellington Line, it depicts a vintage scene with a classic streetcar crossing over in front of the famous Flat Iron building in Toronto. Walter has had a 14 year relationship with the TTC and this is his fourth commission for them. “I worked across the street from the Flat Iron building when I was in my early twenties. I always looked out at it and always meant to paint it. I finally have now!” explains Walter.

When I arrive at Walter's home studio, he answers the door wearing a t-shirt that says, “Spread Good Vibes”, and wearing an equally welcoming grin on his face. Lynn and Walter are truly at home. Having raised their family in Sunderland, Walter and Lynn made the difficult career decision to move to Niagara on The Lake when he was at his peak. Walter describes it as a fork in the road and they had to take the opportunity. He explains that they always kept their attachments and connections to Sunderland and often came back for family functions and of course the Maple Syrup Festival. Father of 4 and grandfather of 7, they finally made the heartwarming decision in 2009 to” come home” after realizing just how home sick they were. “It became clear where we belonged.” he explains.

Though perfectly qualified as a retiree, Walter is still very much in the game. He is still painting, many of which are commissions, selling prints and producing a very popular limited edition calendar each year as well. His daughter Vanessa, a Graphic Artist, helps Walter produce his calendars now.

As passionate as he still is with his own painting, if you really want to see Walter's eyes sparkle just ask him about his workshops. He has been teaching watercolour classes for several years now at his home. He is so enthusiastic

about it that I am having trouble keeping him focused during our interview. I keep asking him about his work and he keeps referring back to his students. “I am really enjoying teaching and showing them how to do techniques.”, he says with a very large grin. “I know I still need to paint, and now I want to share that with others as well. Painting is an escape and a want that they don't find in their daily lives. There is also so much comradery and encouragement between them. The Continued on page 8 Boomer’s Lifestyle Magazine

biggest stumbling block for most is the drawing aspect. They are afraid of drawing. The first thing I do is teach them how to get past that.” he further explains.

“We all need to have something to do. Always!

Something worth doing. Being an artist satisfies that need in me. It just does, I can't explain it.”, says Walter. “I am on the downhill drive, and I love it.” Walter explains showing with his hands how he had to climb the hill and then work hard to stay on the top. “I spent so many years painting under pressure, dealing with salespeople and printers and focusing on producing and selling. I couldn't have done it without my wife Lynn who often dealt directly with the people and set-up the gallery in Niagara. But I never lost track of the fact that I needed to paint for the sake of painting, nothing else. I can honestly say that I have never painted anything I didn't want to paint, or that I didn't see something that I wanted to say.”

Walter has played the guitar his whole life but had to put it on hold many times. A little while ago, he bumped into a few other musicians at the local legion's open mic night and got the bug again. “Now I am the student and I am watching the teachers.” he exclaims. “The comradery is wonderful and they just love to help you and accept you as you are.” Walter suspects a lot of it has to do with the age group. They are very encouraging when I stumble. He has another new friend, which is his newest instrument the banjo.

He was comfortable with the guitar so he wanted to try something new; however, he explains that the learning curve isn't as large this time. “I guess it's like already knowing how to paint in acrylics and deciding to try watercolours”.

Walter's work is still available at The Prince of Wales Hotel in Niagara and at many galleries closer to home including Framer's Gallery in Port Perry. “I

s this place haunted?” is a question often heard from folks when they first enter Lindsay's Olde Gaol Museum, formerly an 1860's-era County Jail. That query is commonly followed by the admission, “I sure felt something when I came in through the doors.”

Is the Olde Gaol haunted? The jail officially closed in 2003, when its last 86 inmates were transferred to more modern facilities. Former cells have been given over to museum display space and galleries that tell the story of the Kawartha Lakes. But there's no escaping the fact that it was once a place of incarceration. Barred doors and windows attest to that. Tiny cells and even a ball and chain reflect the rough justice that was once meted out here.

But do restive spirits remain in the building?

An Indigenous Elder speaks of a presence upon descending to the basement. Visitors have heard their names being called distinctly … yet there is no living person in the museum to greet their reply. Lights are switched off and later found lit.

Things go missing.

There seems to be a latent tension in the atmosphere.

Does the history of this place of punitive justice carry psychic echoes within its stone walls? The Olde Gaol has its creaks and groans, befitting its age, but maybe – just maybe – there is more.

Recently, the Victoria County Historical Society (VCHS) decided to put the question to the test. In July, the VCHS invited team PROO{f} - Paranormal Researchers of Ontario (with {f}ear being the unknown variable) – to conduct a thorough exploration of the building and track down whatever might go bump in the night. On hand were VCHS vice president Tom Mohr, Olde Gaol volunteer Liz Henderson and summer intern Carly Power.

by curiosity. If there is something going on, he is determined to find out what it is. Paul shares the founding credits and is more ‘sensitive': acutely aware of what might be considered intangible phenomena. Rob and Shane share investigative duties and are also attuned to anomalous presences and disturbances in the ether. Capturing the sessions and offering a stable baseline, is videographer and house skeptic Ben. He doesn't deny that weirdness might be at play, but isn't a ‘believer' in the supernatural.

PROO{f} is not only a well-oiled paranormal research team, but also a well-balanced one.

After a tour of the building, and based on their feel for the place and anecdotes from the resident experts, the PROO{f} team set up a pair of monitoring stations – one on the main floor, one on the third – which were tied together by sets of cameras.

Communication was by walky-talky. Handheld video cameras recorded impressions using multiple light frequencies. The crew also came armed with gear to measure fluctuations in temperature and electromagnetic energy that are common in ‘hauntings,' as well as instruments that could aid in communicating with any spirits.

It was an interesting evening.

According to PROO{f}, the basement – an area that creeps out staff and visitors alike – is pretty active. Down there, the hairs stood up on Paul's arms as if he was passing through an electrical field. He noted more than one active but invisible presence on that level, including something that was watching the team from a corridor.

Like the basement, the upper floors demonstrated signs of ‘activity'. That came as no surprise to the Lindsay contingent, as the third level, too, often causes guests and contractors discomfort. Five members of the team conducted a vigil in one of the cell blocks after Paul and Shane had heard female voices and footsteps on the third floor. Although no ‘ghost' was revealed, in retrospect one VCHS member recalls a curious consciousness that there were too many people in the cell. Was that, in itself, a subtle message?

On the second level, the apartments seem to host a spritely presence. Some members of the group felt like they were being touched about the head or that they were being led a merry chase, following a presence that was always just around the corner. Could that be reflective of the fact that some governors (wardens) of the jail had lived there with their families and that happy events – children playing hide and seek, perhaps – might resonate still on that floor?

There seemed to be odd things in play. Corridors that had been dark moments before were brightly lit upon the teams' return. The yard – former site of the gallows and still apparently occupied by three unmarked graves – gave off resonances but no particular manifestations. A dark shadow crossed a window, but the team couldn't be certain: was it outside the building – maybe a pigeon disturbed from its roost – or had it appeared inside the empty stairwell? What fleeting image had the cameras captured?

By 2 a.m., PROO{f} had wrapped up its investigation and was

pleased with their night's work.

While nothing occurred that was worthy of a Hollywood script, the Lindsay folks were happy that no demonic entities had emerged from computer monitors, and the investigators felt the building had yielded a few of its secrets.

They left with data, video and audio to process along with their

own impressions. These will be compiled into a video feature that will be shared at a later date and should confirm what museum staff and visitors have long since suspected: there are presences at the Olde Gaol but they're not nasty. Just restless.

Remembering When

T

here was a time, in rural Ontario, when communities were isolated and very self reliant. Before highways and cars, railways and trains your social boundaries were defined by what you could comfortably cover in a half-day's buggy or sleigh ride for a visit with neighbours, friends and family. At certain times of the year – spring and fall, particularly – roads were impassable. Relatives communicated back and forth using inexpensive postcards. Stamps were one cent within Canada or to the US and a whopping two cents if your missive was going abroad.

Because travel was difficult small towns relied on local citizens to fill every niche. Many did more than one job. Barbers were also often tailors, furniture makers doubled as undertakers, bakers ran a bulk food store with an ice cream parlour.

Businesses were handed down from generation to generation as craftsmen taught their trades to their young family members.

People came to town on a Saturday to buy local products from merchants or head over to the farmers' market in the old town hall to buy all manner of beast and produce. During the week, children walked to Cameron St. Cannington school and often there were up to eight grades in a single classroom.

Families had lived in the area for generations and had blood bonds that ran deep and strong.

The early social network was the church and every family had members in the band, choir and on various committees. Beyond church, social networks included all manner of local societies and support groups. The Orange Lodges, Masons, Eastern Stars groups, Lions Clubs and 4-H Clubs all provided a venue for individuals to help out in the community. Neighbours helped each other with barn raising and hundreds would turn out to build a new barn in a just few days. The annual fairs drew huge crowds and the Orange Parade in July drew thousands from all the surrounding towns as local bands marched down the main street of town.

It was a time when doctors made house calls yearround – either by buggy or sled. The local grist mill shut down at 6 pm and its generator provided the town with electrical power until 11 pm at night.

Halloween was an adventurous time of mischievous tricks that wore local constables ragged as they tried to keep things under control.

But it wasn't all fun and games. Nature was often cruel and selective. Flu epidemics were devastating without the protection of modern antibiotics. Fires ravaged these isolated towns. Firemen were all volunteers and often a community bucket brigade helped quench any flames in the absence of pumper trucks and the machinery we take for granted.

In about 1868, this isolated rural lifestyle changed dramatically in Ontario due to a surprising product: whiskey. The Toronto Nipissing Railway was built to link the Toronto Distillery District to the woodlands around Coboconk. The timber in that area was

needed as a vital component in the brewing process The train went from the shores of Lake Ontario up through Scarborough, Unionville, Uxbridge, Marsh Hill, Blackwater, Sunderland, Cannington, Lorneville, Eldon, Kirkfield and Coboconk.

Towns on the new railway link prospered and those on the outskirts became ghost towns. Now there was no need for individual local craftsman, as numerous manufactured goods arrived daily from urban markets. New homes, hotels and businesses started popping up at each rail link and these economies boomed. Workers began to leave their rural homes to take better paying jobs in Toronto.

Blackwater Junction became a major rail station linking the Great Lakes at Midland to the Saint Lawrence River and grain flowed from the western prairies to new markets in Europe, as the route bypassed Niagara Falls. Up to eight trains each day passed through Blackwater carrying passengers and freight supplies including wood, grain, farm produce and livestock.

Children rode the train to Uxbridge or Lindsay to advance their education beyond continuation school. With two mail trains arriving daily, you could now send a postcard or letter in the morning and get a reply that same night.

Long before a network of highways linked the small towns of Ontario, it was the railway that rapidly altered the social and economic fabric of the rural community.

The iron link was beneficial in many ways, but it weakened our independence and self reliance.

It diluted our sense of community spirit and our commitment to achieve local goals using energy from within. The sense of importance bestowed upon each individual town and its townspeople

was lost. Today, it is hard to remember when life moved at a slower pace and the support and interdependence of the community set the standards for rural life.

Our ancestors were true survivors. They lived through the long voyage aboard ship to Canada, Main Street, Manilla then the harsh winter months in their new home, the ravages of fire and disease. Kawartha Settlers’ Village: Age-old fun for the young at heart

ut down your iPad and put on your walking shoes for a jaunt through the past at Bobcaygeon's Kawartha Settlers' Village. This unique heritage community brings local history and culture to life, showcasing real families, authentic buildings and personal artifacts from 1833 to the 1930's. Now in its 25th season, this non-profit village is a testament to the fortitude and dedication of the settlers of the area and to the remarkable volunteers who are preserving the past.

On what was once the site of Murphy Bros.

Meadowbrook Dairy, stand 20 buildings resurrected to their pioneering glory. Aside from a replica of Bobcaygeon founder Thomas Need's 1833 shanty and the dairy barn that was on-site, all buildings are local treasures that have been moved to the village.

There is a nice cross-section of times past with a trapper's cabin, a woodworking shop, a carriage house, schoolhouse and more. Wray House, the oldest building on the premises, dates to the 1850s; Fairbairn Church, restored to its original splendor after use as a chicken coup, now hosts weddings; and Jimmie Hill's Harness Shop, once located on

Bobcaygeon's King Street, now serves as a General Store offering essential goods, a post office and a barber shop.

According to staff member Jess King, one of the village's most popular attractions is the prized W.O.O.T. This 1902 gas-powered vehicle – designed by its namesake William Orton Orville Thomas – is one of only three ever built by Bobcaygeon's J.H. Moore Carriage Works. The Old Firehall is another draw, housing Bobcaygeon's first fire truck and hand pumpers from the late 1800s.

Visitors who bring along young ones are often surprised by children's enthusiasm for this window into the past, reports Jess. “Kids are fascinated by the ingenious handcrafted inventions that are nearly lost,” she says, adding that staff notice kids are especially intrigued when regaled with tales of technology-free times: of relatives in the near-past who used an icebox in place of a fridge, a handcranked ringer washer and a wind-up Victrola.

She suggests visitors keep an eye out for other intriguing artifacts on display, including the dogpowered treadle, the hay packer, and Mossom Boyd's horse-drawn lawnmower.

Not only does the site bring the past into the present, it also serves as a contemporary event venue with a twist and a meeting place for community arts groups. Henderson House and Wray House, key hubs of the heritage village, are also central gathering places for Caygeon Carvers, Settlers' Village Artists, Settlers' Village Quilters' Guild, Thursty Painters and Village Artists.

If it's not enough to walk the leather off your shoes strolling back through the past in just one visit, you can take in the fall colours with a tour around the nature trail or sign up to become one of vibrant volunteers who pull this all together.

Kawartha Lakes Festival of Trees

ull on your long johns, pack a hot brick in your sleigh and join the fun at Kawartha Lake's 18th Annual Festival of Trees, November 12 to15. With the help of more than 200 volunteer elves and donations from 150 generous sponsors, Kawartha Settlers' Village is transformed into an enchanted wonderland of twinkle lights, decorated trees wreaths and garlands.

You can stroll through the village or take a horsedrawn sleigh ride on a festive outing that offers a reprieve from the usual hustle and bustle of the season. The trip into Christmas past starts at the drive shed with a breathtaking Toyland Showcase.

If you plan your visit wisely, you can enjoy carol singing by the Kawartha Men's Chorus, storytelling at Fairbairn Church, a performance by Rick Alston and a recital by the students of Red Door Music.

Culinary delights abound at the Friday Festival Roast Beef Dinner and the Saturday Children's Magical Morning Pancake Breakfast offered by the Lawn Bowling Club next door or you can feast on soup, strudel and homemade treats at the Christmas Cafe in Henderson House. Be sure to pick up some Settlers' Soup Mix (a great stocking stuffer!) and other treats and treasures at the General Store Christmas Boutique.

There's no end to the fun for wee tagalongs, who can visit Santa at the Toyland Showcase take part in the Children's Workshop at Kimble House and shop at Santa's Secret Shoppe in the Carriage House.

At Muir house, in a touching tradition in keeping with the season, you can purchase an ornament from the Festival Memorial Tree and leave a

message in honour of a loved one.

The Twilight Auction, a highlight of the festival, takes place in the beautifully adorned Murphy Barn on Saturday night. Let’s go Antiquing this Weekend

I

t's autumn and there is a lovely crispness to the air.

There is also a little voice in the back of your head saying, “it won't be long now until we are hibernating for winter.” So how about making the best of this glorious season?

Country drives were made for the fall. The landscape, the fall colours and the fun little towns and villages you can stumble upon if you give yourself a chance are countless. Antique shops are full of fun and quirky treasures, and that includes many of the shop owners themselves. We are a different bunch, and we come from vastly different backgrounds.

Who else would pursue with passion and knowledge an industry that requires you to procure your stock by crawling around in other people's attics, barns and basements? And yet we carry on our obsession. The side roads are fun, the shops no two alike and you really never know what and who you will stumble upon. Of course, there are always two sides to every story. We meet some

real characters, uhm, I mean customers along the way too.

With that in mind I thought I would compile a list of the top reasons in no apparent order, to go antiquing this weekend; 1. It gets you out of the house and into the countryside.

4. Every once in a while you may overhear a groan from a fellow shopper, “Look at that!

My Brother got “ours” and we haven't spoken since.”

2. You never know what personalities you are going to meet and in some cases make lifelong connections with.

5. You may learn something.

There is a good chance that you will spy something in the back corner and just have to ask what the heck is that?

3. It's a great trip down memory lane. You won't be into the first shop more than 5 minutes before exclaiming something like, “OMG, my Grandmother had one just like that. I wonder whatever happened to it?”

6. You may discover something.

No matter how many years we have been in the business, we are never finished learning. You may know what something is that has been sitting in the case without a label on it.

Antique shops are full of fun and quirky treasures, and that includes many of the shop owners themselves.

14. You are buying quality. That desk you found has been around for 70 years and will still be useful in another 70 years, possibly.

15. If you decide ten years from now that you need a change, the table can be resold, not thrown in the dumpster, like much of the new furniture these days.

16. You are being green and practicing the 3 R's. Recreate, re-use and re-cycle.

17. While out and about you will probably stumble upon an awesome pub or café tucked out of the way.

7. Fun date with the spouse.

8. Great idea for a road trip with your Mom and/or Dad. 9. You will get good decorating ideas; as in, wow I have one of those buffets at home but I love the way she reinvented it into a linen cupboard.

10. You will get ideas of what you don't want; “who was the idiot that painted that?”

11. It's free entertainment, unless you find that thing you just can't live without.

18. You seldom go wrong taking the road less travelled.

19. Your chance to learn more than you did in three years of history class…… and no test at the end.

20. There are addictions.

There’s No Place Like Home

I

n 1967, my mother had to make a decision about where she was going to move our family.

The two options were Orangeville and Port Perry.

She chose Port Perry and, almost 50 years, later I am glad she did. Nothing against Orangeville – it's a lovely town – but nothing beats Scugog.

I eventually left the nest and migrated to Toronto, but the lure to come back to Port was always there.

Eight years ago, we finally returned. I wish we'd done it sooner. This part of North Durham has all we could ever need and so much more. And with Uxbridge a mere 10 minute drive away, we want for nothing. Arts, sports, culture, fine dining. You name it, this area has it. And we're still under an hour away from Toronto. So if we really feel the need to rock, the Big Smoke is a stone's throw away.

In fact, a good number of Port Perry and Uxbridge residents live out here and make the daily trek to their jobs in the city. And that commute is about to get a whole lot easier with the 407 nearing completion to Harmony Road in Oshawa.

So what's the attraction? Well, for one thing, you can buy a home here for a fraction of what you pay in Toronto. And it comes with a nice sized yard and no double land transfer tax. Plus, we have Lake Scugog, the jewel of the Kawarthas, so there's lots to do outdoors year round. Ice fishing, skating, hiking and snowmobiling in the winter and fishing, boating, swimming and water sports in the summer.

Queen Street, Port Perry One of the other big advantages to the area is that it has managed to maintain the small-town feel that it had when we first showed up here back in the 60s. Neighbours are friendly and want to help out. The service organizations are first-rate and there is always a fundraiser going on to support a worthy local cause. The people around here really do care – whether it's about their hospital or a neighbour in distress – and they show it with their actions.

Scugog Township is home to an estimated 21,439 people, while the town itself has a population of around 8,000. Uxbridge Township is a little bigger, with a total population of 20,623 and an urban centre that is home to 11,000. Both are poised to grow. Scugog recently approved a new sewage processing plant that will see the addition of many new homes over the next two to five years, and Uxbridge is currently in growth mode.

People are attracted to the area for its amenities and small-town feel, but the bottom line certainly helps. I recently listed a home in Scarborough for $549,000 and, while it's nice, it doesn't compare to the kind of place money can buy out here. Improved transportation is making things more appealing to commuters, including everexpanding GO service and extended highway access, and a growing number of people are choosing to look outside of the big city to satisfy their housing needs.

The majority of the population in Scugog is between the age of 35 and 64, and there is an increasing number of adult lifestyle communities and housing options for Boomers available in North Durham and Kawartha Lakes, with affordability being a major draw.

For those looking to consolidate their home and leisure property, the lakes offer gorgeous waterfront properties that are close to town and accessible year-round. Homes on Lake Scugog sell for as low as the mid 200s and go up into the millions, so there is a wide range from which to choose.

The Roxy Theatre, Cenotaph and Library, Uxbridge

For 20 years, I hung my hat in a number of Toronto, Oshawa and Whitby communities, and I liked them all. Each has unique characteristics that sets them apart and makes them appealing. But when you take into account everything we have here in Scugog – the lake, the people, the small town feel, the value – nothing compares to my Port Perry home. B

Local theatres stage world-class entertainment this fall

ungering for a little drama in your life? Hankering for some old time rock and roll? Look no further than your local centre for the performing arts. There is no need to travel into the city to experience award-winning concerts, plays and musicals. Live theatre and music of all genres abounds in small-town Ontario. Both Port Perry and Lindsay boast a vibrant entertainment scene, supported by two heritage buildings: Town Hall 1873 and the Academy Theatre. Both have a full fall lineup that offers something for every cultural appetite.

Town Hall 1873 Centre for the Performing Arts, Port Perry Built in 1873, the Town Hall Centre for the Performing Arts has undergone a number of metamorphoses: from Township Office, to jail and court house, to theatre, roller skating rink, movie house, fire station and ladies undergarment factory. Under threat of becoming a parking lot, the building was saved by a group of dedicated residents in 1973 and restored, once again, to a theatre. A six-year, $1.2 million expansion that maintained the building's historical integrity, added modern amenities: kitchen facilities, air conditioning, sloped theatre floor and comfortable seating, dressing rooms, backstage area and stage wings, an elevator and fully washrooms. The newly renovated Town Hall opened in November 2004 with the staging of the original musical production Once Upon a Winter's Eve by local playwright Liz Auston, produced by Scugog Choral Society. Since then, Town Hall 1873 Centre for the Performing Arts has become a popular venue for meetings and

parties, performances by production companies, dance schools and individuals, as well as the resident and non-resident musical and dramatic community theatre groups who perform there regularly, including the Borelians Community Theatre and the Port Perry Town Hall Players.

The Academy Theatre for the Performing Arts, Lindsay Designed by architect W. Blackwell of Peterborough, and spearheaded by two local citizens – R. J. Matchett and Fred Knowlton – Lindsay's Academy Theatre was built in the spring of 1892. When its doors opened in 1893, it was billed as the most technically perfect theatre in Canada. There was seating for 900 people, with one balcony and VIP boxes on either side of the stage. It was in this theatre that Marie Dressler made her first stage appearance at the age of five, in an amateur play organized by her mother. As part of the vaudeville circuit in the early 1900s, the Academy hosted a young Sammy Davis Jr. and the Marx Brothers, as well. Silent movies were introduced in about 1918, and later – in 1923 – talking films. In 1953, The Century Theatre opened in town, and although some live shows continued, it was eventually put up for sale.

In 1963 the Academy Theatre Foundation was formed and bought the theatre for $18,000.

Another $40,000 was raised to renovate the lobby, the office space, the stage and to replace the old coal furnaces. Kawartha Summer Theatre began in 1965 and the beloved Dennis and Maggie Sweeting spent their first summer here, producing Summer Stock. The Women's Guild also started their valuable work hosting receptions, raising funds and ushering. Country Music Legend Tommy Hunter presented his show every Friday night from the Academy for three summers.

Today, the Academy Theatre for Performing Arts is a busy non-profit cultural centre, presenting incredible concerts and community productions, providing a venue for local schools and organizations and welcoming more than 50,000 visitors a year.

Travel Insurance: Don’t leave home without it

he question is not, Should we buy travel insurance? The question is, What kind of travel insurance should we buy? Should you get cancellation insurance? Out-of-province medical insurance? Or both?

If you are still one of those people who think you don't need travel cancellation insurance, you need to change your attitude right now. After selling travel for 10 years, I can tell you that anyone who doesn't protect themselves and their investment is taking a big risk. I cannot count the number of times I have picked up the phone to hear the heartbreaking story of why customers have to cancel their trip … and then the gut wrenching realization that they don't have cancellation insurance, their investment is lost and there is nothing I can do to help them.

And what about customers who have an unexpected injury or illness while travelling and have no insurance coverage to help them? People have lost their homes trying to pay out-of-province medical bills.

But travel insurance doesn't need to be complicated or scary.

Here are a few misconceptions and truths about travel insurance.

I'm too old to get travel medical insurance.

Not so. Most insurance companies will insure you right up to age 90.

Not so. There may be some qualifiers, such as when you had your heart attack or how many heart attacks you have had. But a heart attack does not necessarily disqualify you from getting insurance.

I'm not going out of Canada, so I don't need medical insurance because OHIP covers me.

Not so. OHIP is a provincial health care service and although all provinces have their own version, they are not necessary compatible. OHIP will cover some out-of-province medical expenses but not all.

You will be expected to pay the difference. Travel medical insurance will cover the things that OHIP does not.

I'm healthy as a horse. Nothing's going to happen to me.

Famous last words. It's not the big heart attack you need to worry about, it's the little things like an unexpected rash or allergy or tripping over the sidewalk while sightseeing. X-raying your sprained ankle could cost you a couple of thousand dollars.

You have to fill out long, complicated forms to get medical travel insurance.

Not so. If you're travelling for less than two weeks, some companies do not require you to fill out any forms.

It's so expensive! I can't afford it.

No so. Here are some examples: • A 65-year-old travelling to the US for 10 days would pay about $90 for medical insurance • A 71-year-old travelling to France for 15 days would pay around $240 for medical insurance • A couple, ages 68 and 59, travelling to the east coast for 14 days would pay around $186 combined.

Eat, Drink and Be Healthy

As a practitioner, says Ady, it's difficult to treat a body that is dehydrated because the tissues do not respond and the treatments don't hold. Her number one prescription? “I really try to push water. Good quality, high alkaline water can make an incredible difference to a person's general health and wellbeing.”

How much water is enough?

More sedentary people need to drink one litre of water for every 40 pounds. If you're eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies, you won't need as much, says Ady, but if you're living off grains, dairy, meat, beer and coffee and having a glass of wine at night, then you're going to need that much plus more, because all of these foods and beverages are dehydrating. They pull water from the body. “Even breathing uses a litre and half of water a day.”

Another dilemma is finding a good source of water. Bottled water is out. Not only is it awful for the environment, “we're finding that humans contain a lot of plastic,” says Ady. “I typically buy alkalinized water (PH 9) from the Water Depot and keep it in a glass bottle.”

Room temperature is always best

since hot or cold water overexcites the cilia in what is already a typically over-inflamed gut. If you're drinking your own tap water, have a sample tested.

If the PH is low, you can add a slice of lemon or one teaspoon of baking soda per litre to bring it up.

Mind your PH Elevating the PH of your water is critical because hand in hand with dehydration as a crippling factor is hyperacidity. “I really try to impress upon my patients that their food is their medicine. What you put into your body affects the PH of your system.”

All new patients are instructed to buy some PH strips at their local health food store and test their urine at home. It has to be the first pee of the morning, when the previous day's food has had a chance to digest. Most test between 4.5 and 5.

They should be at 7. “It doesn't seem like a big difference but it means the body is 100 times more acidic than the blood, and that means the body is continuously battling hyperacidity.”

The way that it does this is threefold. First it leaches calcium from your bones and veins. (Ever wonder why those varicose and spider veins keep popping up?) Second, it raises cortisol levels, which affects your adrenals and thyroid, as well as your sleep.

(Insomnia is a common side effect.) And third, it raises cholesterol to a very unhealthy level. “Those are the three biggies,” says Ady, “and they cause pain, inflammation, diabetes, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis among other ailments. But when you have a hyperacidic system, you also have a rampant breeding ground for cancer. Cancer loves an acidic environment.”

Consistently low PH is not only dangerous it has an aging effect. According to Ady, “If your best friend looks 20 years older than you, you can bet her PH is low. You don't need fancy skin creams. You just need to keep your PH up.” Patients who do, look and feel younger. And you don't have to sacrifice everything that you love. “Have a cup of coffee once in a while instead of three times a day. And if you're going to indulge, alkalinize throughout the day and start off with a fruit meal.”

Keep it simple It seems almost too simple, Ady says, “but it is simple. Water – hydration – and alkalinizing the

system: eating more fresh fruits and veggies and better food combining to make it easy on digestion. People need to keep it simple and take responsibility for their own bodies.”

It's up to the patient to make the necessary dietary changes. Ady's role is to educate and inform.

“We just need to understand how the machine actually works. My job is to teach my patients how to navigate their own bodies and then hold them accountable for their actions.”

Spaghetti with Creamy Butternut Leek Parmesan Sauce A warm and healthy recipe that’s sure to become a fall favourite!

Ingredients: 1 lb

butternut squash, peeled and diced

1 tbsp

light butter

8 oz

spaghetti of your choice

(use brown rice pasta for gluten-free)

1 cup

large leek, sliced (white part only)

2 cloves

garlic, minced

1/4 cup

fresh shaved Parmesan cheese

sage leaves, sliced thin

Directions Bring pot of salted water to a boil Add butternut squash, cook until soft.

Gently drain squash - a slotted spoon may be easiest.

Place squash in blender and blend until smooth.

Cook the pasta according to the package directions As the pasta is cooking, in a large skillet, melt the butter and sauté the leeks and garlic over mediumlow heat until soft and golden, about 5-6 minutes.
