Petr Veliký svého času chtěl, aby hlavní město jeho říše ohromovalo návštěvníky tou nejvelkolepější architekturou, proto sem povolal nejslavnější evropské architekty. Jeho následovnice Kateřina Veliká velkolepé dílo ještě rozšířila. Petrohrad neměl být městem ruským, ale veskrze evropským a prakticky jedinou budovou, která odráží ruské tradice, je tak chrám Vzkříšení, který byl přestavěn po vzoru chrámu Vasila Blaženého. Většina budov a paláců je však v barokním, rokokovém a neoklasicistním stylu. Petrohrad se dá poměrně snadno obejít pěšky. Díky unikátním pamětihodnostem se v něm brzy budete orientovat i bez mapy. Nejdříve navštivte impozantní pevnost sv. Petra a Pavla (která však nikdy nečelila obléhání a sloužila spíše jako vězení pro politické odpůrce) a zlatem se lesknoucí katedrálu, kde je pochována většina příslušníků carského rodu Romanovců, od Petra Velikého po Alexandra III. Nedaleko pevnosti dodnes kotví slavný křižník Aurora. Výstřel z jejího děla započal bolševickou revoluci a zkázu dynastie Romanovců, dal vzniknout Sovětskému

First visit the impressive St Peter and Paul Fortress (which was never besieged, however, and served rather as a prison for political dissidents) with its gleaming gold cathedral where most members of the imperial family of Romanovs lie buried, from Peter the Great to Alexander III. Near the fort, the famous cruiser Aurora is still anchored. A shot from its cannon began the Bolshevik Revolution and the downfall of the Romanov dynasty, gave rise to the Soviet Union and changed the city’s name to Leningrad for almost 70 years. On your way to the ship, stop by the simple house where Tsar Peter the Great lived. Continue with a stroll along the four kilometre long Nevsky Prospekt, the main thoroughfare of St Petersburg, as most of the important monuments are located around it. See the Kazan Cathedral, which was originally intended as a copy of St Peter’s in Rome but eventually came to be a unique example of the Russian classicist style.
