V roce 1822 britští koloniální úředníci rozčlenili Singapur na etnické enklávy a město si toto rozdělení do jisté míry zachovalo dodnes. Každá část města tak má vlastní neopakovatelnou atmosféru i architektonický ráz. Kouzlo starých dob naštěstí zůstalo uchováno třeba v Tiong Bahru, jedné z nejstarších obytných čtvrtí s malebnými domky v úzkých uličkách, které přímo vybízejí k procházce. Původně zde bydleli úředníci britské správy a čínští boháči si tu drželi byty pro své milenky. Indická čtvrť dnes trochu připomíná filmové kulisy, ale čínská je pořád plná života, i když jásavými barvami natřené domečky už slouží hlavně jako módní kavárny. Nakupování je v Singapuru národním sportem a hlavní obchodní třída Orchard Road je toho důkazem. Pokud neholdujete obrovským nákupním střediskům, zamiřte do luxusních butiků v Holland Village, vilové čtvrti se stinnými stromořadími. V Haji Lane blízko Arab Street ve čtvrti Kampong Glam zase v desítkách obchůdků nabízejí své výrobky mladí talentovaní návrháři. V arabské části města pořád ještě najdete indonéské batikované látky nebo modlitební koberečky, neboť tu více než sto let bydleli hlavně muslimové. I teď si v místních čajovnách můžete pochutnat na sladkostech a vodní dýmce a na Bussorah Street si budete připadat jako na Blízkém východě. In 1822 the British colonial officials divided Singapore up into ethnic enclaves and the city has to some extent retained these divisions to this day. Each part of the city thus has its own unique atmosphere and architectural character. The charm of the old days has fortunately been preserved in Tiong Bahru, one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods with picturesque houses in narrow streets that are so inviting for strolling through. The area was originally inhabited by British government officials, and wealthy Chinese kept apartments for their mistresses here. The Indian district somewhat resembles a movie set nowadays, but the Chinese quarter is still full of life, even though the houses painted in exultant colours are mostly used as fashionable cafes these days. Shopping is the national sport in Singapore and you need no better proof of this than to visit the main shopping street on Orchard Road. If you are not a big fan of huge shopping malls, head to the luxury boutiques in Holland Village, a residential area with leafy alleys with dappled shade. Or in Haji Lane, near Arab Street in the Kampong Glam district, you will find dozens of stores in which talented young designers offer their products. But you can also find Indonesian batiks and prayer rugs in the Arab district, as this area was predominantly Muslim for more than a hundred years. Even now the local teahouses invite you to enjoy a water pipe and sweets, and on Bussorah Street you will feel like you are right in the Middle East. Rochester Park is a beautifully restored part of the city with “black and white” houses (because of their white walls and black wooden beams) that now contain excellent restaurants. In the evening, make sure you do not miss the chance to see the whole illuminated city from above. The best 360º view is from the SkyPark observation tower in a huge complex called the Marina Bay Sands, which includes a hotel with two and a half thousand rooms, a casino and several restaurants. From there you will have the whole metropolis at your fingertips, as well as the harbour full of luxury ocean liners. Once you get sufficiently acquainted with the city, visit the Museum of Contemporary Arts, or MOCA. It is located in former colonial barracks from the 1860s, but inside it features cutting-edge modern design and creations by the most outstanding artists of Asia. The history of Singapore and its surroundings is best learned in the Asian Civilisations Museum which, in addition to temporary shows, has a permanent exhibition of Chinese, South Indian and Islamic cultural heritage. Last year saw the opening of the ArtScience Museum, showing how closely interconnected these two worlds are. This wonderfully thought-out building, designed by the famous architect Moshe Safdie, is proof enough on its
