Scary Movies

By Rick Karlin

It’s that time of year again, when Hollywood releases a slew of horror films. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t and sometimes they are hysterically funny. But, at Halloween we all want to get the bejeezus scared out of us. Here’s a list of the best horror films to download or pop in your video player to get you in the mood. In compiling this list we began to wonder why so many really good horror films seem to be from the mid ‘70s through early ‘80s. One caveat, these are all English language films. There are some pretty scary foreign films, especially those from Korea, Japan and, inexplicably, Scandinavia. Our list of the best horror films of all time is presented in alphabetical order, because, really, how can you quantify terror? 28 Days Later Danny Boyle’s postapocalyptic thriller turned the zombie genre sideways. Rather than the lumbering creatures of previous films, his undead were more like amphetamine driven predators, and rather than being undead, they were infected with a virus. An American Werewolf In London Directed by John Landis, the movie’s blend of comedy and horror isn’t always successful, and its ending seems abrupt, but when it’s scary, it’s really scary, especially the werewolf attacks, shot from the predator’s point of view. For the time, the special effects for David Naughton’s transformation scene were spectacular and, amazingly, still hold up today.

documentary trend, it is truly a shocker; the jerky camera work adds to the realistic feel, again, a low budget forced the director to rely on keeping his audience in the dark, making the fear palpable. Carrie Brian De Palma’s adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel shows what happens when the mean girls get their comeuppance. The ‘70s fashions and hairdos and over the top acting (or lack thereof ) make the beginning a laugh riot, but when Carrie lets loose it does get pretty scary and that final scene is a heart-stopper. The Evil Dead Sam Raimi made this movie for a mere $385,000. The plot isn’t original; kids at a cabin in the woods and demons from Hell. But it created a template for horror films to this day. The Exorcist William Friedkin, at the height of his creative potential created, quite possibly, the most disturbing movie of all time. A near perfect package of haunting score, great acting and fear inducing cinematography, it gives me chills just to write about it. Halloween John Carpenter’s film is, one of the most profitable indie films of all time, costing a mere $300,000 and pulling in more than $55 million. It also set the tone for the teen scream queens for decades. A Nightmare On Elm Street The first of Wes Craven’s films centering on the character of Freddy Krueger, who stalks teens while they sleep, turning the mundane aspects of adolescence into fear- inducing drama.

The Omen Directed by Richard Donner, this is another ‘70s master of terror. The Blair Witch Project Rightfully known Young Harvey Stephens, as Damian is one reason why. He seemed to emanate for more than just starting the fauxpure evil. (continued on following page) 14 boiMAG

SCARY MOVIEs ...continued

Poltergeist Tobe Hooper directed from a story by Steven Spielberg. A family moves into its dream home only to find out that it is possessed by sinister beings. The fact that three of the film’s stars suffered untimely deaths just makes the film that much creepier. Psycho Hitchcock set the standard for the modern horror film; psychotic killers in place of ludicrous movie monsters, an eerie score and startling cuts (more than 50 in the shower sequence alone) and an ending that is open to interpretation. Rosemary’s Baby Roman Polanski directed the film more as a conspiracy thriller than horror movie. Mia Farrow is the soul of this story, fighting off intrusive neighbors and struggles with the belief that she was raped by Satan. The Shining Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel about the Torrance family’s headlong plunge into insanity during a secluded Colorado winter is not King’s favorite adaptation of his work, but Jack Nicholson’s descent into madness is terrifying. The Silence Of The Lambs Jonathan Demme directed this multiple Oscarwinning film that made Hannibal Lecter one of the most memorable screen villains, thanks, in large part, to Anthony Hopkins’ performance. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Tobe Hooper’s creepy film, based on actual horrific ritual murders, proves that truth is stranger (and scarier) than fiction. It plays out like a grainy, low-budget documentary. boiMAG 17

INTERVIEW

Justina Machado

GS: Speaking of Ricardo, he co-starred in “Desperate Housewives,” a show in which you appeared in a couple of episodes. Was that the first time that you’d met Ricardo or Even if you don’t know Justina Machado by name, you probably recognize her as Vanessa had you worked together prior to that? JM: Prior, because Ricardo was in the from “Six Feet Under” or Stephanie from second season of “Six Feet Under.” He did “Private Practice.” Maybe you recently say three episodes. He played Freddy’s (Freddy her on the “The Fosters,” the series about the Rodríguez) cousin, the one that we found lesbian foster moms or as Pedro Zamora’s having sex with the construction worker. I’m sister Milly in the biopic “Pedro.” The minute sure Ricardo is going to love that I reminded you see her or hear her voice, she will be everybody about that [laughs]. So, I had familiar to you. With her new NBC sitcom worked with Ricardo. Also, Latin Hollywood “Welcome to the Family,” in which she plays is a small world; I would have met him Lisette, the mother of college-bound fathereventually. to-be Junior, Machado steps fully into the limelight. The series allows her to be funny GS: I’m glad that you mentioned “Six and show off her funny side for a change, something she enjoys. Justina spoke with me Feet Under,” which was a serious show. “Welcome to The Family,” on the other about “Welcome to The Family.” hand, is more of a modern sitcom. As an actress who has been in sitcoms and in Gregg Shapiro: Justina, you are playing dramatic series, do you have a preference? Lisette in the NBC sitcom “Welcome to the JM: I don’t have a preference, as long as Family.” What was it about that character it’s good and awesome. I do enjoy doing that made you want to portray her? something lighthearted. I am enjoying going Justina Machado: I read the sides to work and laughing every day. (condensed script) and I thought it was amazing. She was funny. It also had to do GS: You were also recently seen on the with her being a well-written character. This show “The Fosters,” which features a pair of is the person I want to play. It was just that lesbian moms raising foster kids. A show simple such as that has a large viewership within the GLBT community and I was wondering GS: Do you think Lisette would feel if, as an actress who has appeared in differently about the situation if it was her daughter who was pregnant as opposed to movies, on TV, and on Broadway, if you were aware of a queer fan-base. her son being the father? JM: I am very aware. I am super excited JM: Wow, that’s a really good question. I and proud of it. One of my brothers is gay. would hope that it wouldn’t be any different because, male or female, they’re still 18 years It’s really important for me to do everything for that. That’s why I did “The Fosters.” That old. You still worry about the rest of their life show is amazing. It’s freaking brilliant and ahead of them. beautiful. Anything for the GLBT community, I’ll do it. I’m also really proud that I have a GS: In “Welcome to The Family,” Lisette fan base. What’s a better fan base than gay comes across as a peace-maker, especially men, are you kidding me [laughs]? And gay in comparison to her husband Miguel (Ricardo Chavira). Are you the levelheaded women! peace-maker in your daily life or do you GS: What do you miss the most and the have a temper like Miguel? least about Chicago? Abundantly Queer

by Gregg Shapiro

One of the best albums by a queer artist in 2013 (if not the best), “Pale Green Ghosts” by John Grant hits all the right notes. Grant succeeds whether dabbling in invigorating queer electro or making timeless modern pop. The combination of elements, including Grant’s warm, but commanding, baritone and his gift for turn of phrase, make these 11 songs worth returning to repeatedly. Keep in mind, the subject matter is a bit bleak -- it is, after all, a breakup album, and Grant spends as much time putting himself through changes as he does his ex. Still, there’s something irresistible at work. “Sensitive New Age Guy” deserves to be spun at tea dances for the remainder of the year. Pet Shop Boys’ fittingly titled “Electric” is the gay comeback record of the year. Approaching the 30th (!) year of the duo’s prolific recording career, PSB electrify listeners with their strongest set of songs in years. “Love Is A Bourgeois Concept,” ranks with the best of Tennant and Lowe’s work – it’s a flawlessly modern dance track, drawing on many of PSB’s trademark tricks, wrapped around the duo’s brand of intellectual and sarcastic lyrics. The dancing doesn’t end there – “Fluorescent” is dazzling, “Inside A Dream” is wistfully wonderful, “The Last To Die” is a lively tune on par with “…Bourgeois Concept,” and “Thursday” includes a rap performed by Example. Be sure to get wired to this disc. Stepping out on her own after a decade with queer folk trio Girlyman, Tylan (Greenstein) doesn’t disappoint with her solo disc “One True Thing.” Expanding on her already impressive song writing and performance skills, Tylan exceeds expectations with “St. Stephen,” before teaming up with Lucy Wainwright Roche on the gorgeous “Earthquakes.”. The static and feedback crunch of “Brennisteinn,” the opening track of “Kveikur,” is a good indication that Sigur Ros, led by out gay front man Jonsi, was going for something else with this disc. The song eventually blossoms into a full-fledged rocker, by anyone’s standards, which is as unexpected as it is fulfilling. You can hear the new direction elsewhere in the percussion and brass of “Hrafntinna” and the strings on “Isjaki” and “Rafstraumur.” Thanks to Sigur Ros, Iceland has never been hotter.

“Sunshine” such a perfect name for his new album. “Born, bullied and teased” in Indiana, the Brooklyn-based musician radiantly triumphs on this 12-track disc. Blue sparkles on danceoriented cuts including the Guanacaste radio mix of “Pura Vida,” the Tim Letteer club mix of “In A Song” and “All The Stars” featuring DJs From Mars. Back when Logo was a gay cable network interested in promoting gay content and GLBT artists, singer/songwriter Ariel Aparicio was a regular presence, his provocative and creative music videos in constant rotation. But times change and Aparicio has changed with them, now fronting a band called Bardot. The quartet’s new seven-song self-titled disc rocks with a blustery blues energy that would make Led Zeppelin blush. The disc’s finest moments can be found on the irresistible pop of “Still The Rains” and subtly country “Little Face.” Patrice Pike first crossed our radar as the lead singer of the Austin band Sister 7. Sister 7 parted ways late in the last century and Pike has kept busy recording and releasing solo albums. Her latest, ‘The Calling” finds Pike in a reflective mood. From the JFK reference on “Count On You” to the musical philosophizing on “Blame,” to the message of hope and concern on “Firefly” and the declaration of love on “I Won’t Give Up,” Pike calls to us and we should listen to what she has to say. In the late 1980s/early 1990s, UK band Kitchens of Distinction was notable for having an openly gay lead singer, Patrick Fitzgerald, singing about same-sex love, and also for being critics’ darlings with a decent following among the indie-rock crowd. Quite an achievement for that time. Nearly 20 years later, Kitchens of Distinction have returned with “Folly.” Fans are sure to be thrilled with the way the band has maintained its trademark (and influential) guitar sound combined with Fitzgerald’s distinctive vocal style. Highlights of this recommended album include the marvelous “Japan To Jupiter,” the catchy “Tiny Moments Tiny Omens,” the extravagant “diamond leashes” of “Extravagance” and the aptly titled “The Most Beautiful Day.”

Other out musicians making this GLBT History Month especially memorable. Out singer/ songwriter Camille Bloom returns with the six-song EP “Big Dreams.” Queer Austin trio The Please Please Me give you plenty of reason to “Shake A Little Harder” on its five-song EP. Leah Jee comes across as an old-school rocker on her six song EP “The Rest Is Ours” and Blonde Afro’s “Troubleshoot The Moon” includes the funky A countertenor with a four octave range, Bobby same-sex love anthem “Spread The Love.” Blue is audio sunshine. Devastated and Depressed

I just found out that my beloved cat, Lucky, has cancer and I can’t stop worrying about him. We’ve been through so much together, when he was a kitten he fell out of the window and broke his leg and I nursed him back to health. He’s been such a loving companion for 18 years, I don’t know what I’m going to do when he dies. I’m afraid to go to work, thinking that he might die while I’m gone. I’ve even set up a web cam so that I can keep an eye on him from my computer while I’m in the office. I never go out with friends, I just want to spend every moment with him. My friends think I’m crazy to make such a fuss, but I can’t help it.

Dear DAD,

It’s a sad fact when we adopt pets that there’s a good chance that we will outlive them. That doesn’t minimize the pain when we lose them, however. Your reaction is a bit extreme though. It seems as if you think that a constant vigil will prolong Lucky’s life, you need to accept the fact that it won’t. I suggest that you seek out a therapist specializing in dealing with grief, and will be there for you when your beloved pet dies. Take some comfort in knowing that you gave him a good life.

Sleepless on Southport

My boyfriend broke up with me and ever since then I can’t seem to fall asleep. When I go to bed, I lie there and think about what I could have done differently to keep the relationship going. I toss and turn for a long time, then I finally give in to the fact that I’m not going to fall asleep, so I turn on the television and click around watching dozens of shows. I usually fall asleep around three in the morning and I have to get up at six for work. I drag myself through the day and come home and collapse on the couch and sleep a few hours, get up, make dinner, watch some more television and then try to go to bed again. I’ve gained weight, I look like crap and my supervisor is dissatisfied with my work performance. I don’t want to take sleeping pills, but I don’t know what else to do.

Dear SOS,

Your can start by turning off the television. Some studies have indicated that watching television makes it harder for your brain to “slow down” at the end of the day. You need to establish a routine that leads to a restful night’s sleep. No matter how tired you are after work, do not take a nap, this just makes it harder to fall asleep later in the evening. Instead, keep yourself occupied with a task that requires you to keep moving. After dinner, go for a long walk. Then read or do some other quiet activity until your usual bedtime. Before going to bed, take a hot bath or shower, which further helps you to relax. Then, establish a bedtime ritual which further calms you, such as meditation. The combination of light exercise, followed by a quieting activity and a bedtime ritual is very effective in cases such as yours. If you still find it difficult to fall asleep, try reading in bed rather than watching television. Just be certain to select something that isn’t a real page-turner. Following this routine for a week should help your body readjust to a satisfying sleep-wake cycle.

Smother’d in Streeterville

My mother, a former fashion model, has been married eight times. She has been totally accepting since I came out as a lesbian in my late teens. However, lately she has been trying to give me a “make-over.” I prefer to dress in, what some might say, is a more masculine way. I never wear skirts or dresses and don’t use any make-up. My mother’s most recent husband is quite wealthy and she’s used this as an excuse to buy me expensive designer dresses and really feminine jewelry. She’s constantly saying that I’ve got “…such a cute figure, you should show it off.” Her latest comment was, “Just because you are a lesbian doesn’t mean you have to look so frumpy!” How can I get her to let me dress, and look, the way I want?

Dear SIS,

Is your mother named Erica Kane? This sounds suspiciously like a soap opera plot. On the offchance that you’re not pulling my leg, might I recommend that you tell your mother that, while you appreciate her attention and efforts, you are quite comfortable with the way you look. Then stick to your guns. Alternatively, you could also adopt a cute little dog and encourage her to buy outfits and accessories for it.
