NORTHALSTED BUSINESS ALLIANCE The Northalsted Business Alliance (NBA) works cooperatively to maintain a diverse, safe and thriving shopping and entertainment district. In 1980, a small group of retailers in a fourblock area along Halsted Street joined forces to promote the street and improve business conditions. Since its inception, the NBA has grown to represent more than 80 businesses along North Halsted Street, from Barry Street to West Irving Park Road. NBA is a major force in the community, championing positive change and growth. NBA’s street beautification program provides regular street and sidewalk cleaning, as well as the maintenance of the seasonal planters. Together with the Chicago Police Department, NBA also administers the Special Service Area #18 Security Rebate Program, which encourages businesses and residents to make their properties safe and secure. Strengthening community is a priority. The NBA has proudly supported The Center on Halsted since its inception and was one of its first major contributors. A focal point for the GLBT community of Chicago, The Center on Halsted (on the corner of Halsted & Waveland) serves the community’s diverse social, recreational, cultural and social service needs. In addition, NBA regularly surveys area residents on our activities and programs to confirm that our efforts are benefiting and appreciated by our local community. NBA hosts two of the city’s most popular events, Pride Fest and Market Days which bring hundreds of thousands of people to the neighborhood as well the Halloween on Halsted Parade. THE Legacy PROJECT The Legacy Project will be hosting a luncheon at Chicago’s Palmer House Hilton on October 25, 2011 to commemorate Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) History Month and launch the one-year drive to the permanent exhibit’s installation which will take place on October 11, 2012, “National Coming Out Day.” The names of the first 36 inductees will be announced at the luncheon, which will feature celebrated activist Cleve Jones, creator of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. Jones is coming to Chicago to talk about The Legacy Walk’s significance and its nationwide implications for advancing the discussion of why GLBT people have been selectively edited or removed entirely from nearly every textbook in use today. In recognition of GLBT History Month, The Legacy Project, a Chicago based Illinois non-profit corporation announces the creation of an outdoor “walking museum” dedicated to celebrating the contributions made by GLBT people to world history and culture. To be located in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, The Legacy Walkwill showcase an extensive series of bronze plaques affixed to the “Rainbow Pylons” which designate Northalsted Street as the nexus of Chicago’s GLBT community. Each plaque will bear an image cast likeness of an inductee along with a 300-word paragraph summarizing their life and contributions. The nominees, which can be found on the organization’s website at www.legacyprojectchicago.org, hail from 33 26 boi

countries and represent 22 different fields of contribution. They come from every walk of life and span over four millennia. Upon its dedication The Legacy Walk will be the only exhibit of its kind in the world. The Legacy Walk has been endorsed by several dozen historians, communityactivists, business leaders, educators, and elected officials, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Governor Pat Quinn. It has been embraced by Illinois Safe Schools, the Prevent School Violence/Illinois alliance and numerous GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) High School Advisors – all of whom recognize the struggles of GLBT youth who grow up in cultural isolation because all GLBT role models have been redacted in one way or another from history. A lack of awareness that GLBT people have contributed substantially to the world is believed to be directly linked to the climate in which anti-gay bullying and GLBT youth suicide flourishes. The Legacy Walk was conceived to confront public ignorance directly through positive messages about extraordinary people like Alan Turing, the father of modern computer science whose work to break the Nazi “Enigma Code” brought down Adolf Hitler; Bayard Rustin, Dr. Martin Luther King’s speechwriter who was not permitted on the stage of the 1963 March on Washington which he organized and Dr. Margaret Chung, patriotic icon of World War II whose celebrated legacy unrivaled in modern times was swept away because it was revealed after her death that she was a lesbian.

CHICAGO SPOTLIGHT By Gregg Shapiro

Lesbian filmmaker Wendy Jo Carlton’s most recent and best full-length feature, the Chicago-set “Jamie and Jessie Are Not Together” is a charming, queer rom/com with the perfect balance of laughter and tears. IndieWire.com agreed and chose writer/director Carlton’s flick as one of the top 10 movies to watch on VOD (Video on Demand) in June 2012. When did you come out and what was the experience like for you? Coming out was a mysterious, organic thing for me. I think we just “build out” from wherever we are in relation to our family and cultural environments. For me, I was lucky because I was not afraid to pursue my desires and attractions at all, even if at first “behind-the-scenes”. So when I did have my first love affair with a woman, it just crystallized for me that I couldn’t go back to the straight-identified life I was in. It was sad though, as I had to break up with a wonderful man who was my friend, but we are still close to this day. As for family, I never did have a direct conversation about “being gay” with parents or siblings, I just started introducing them to my girlfriend(s)! Please name a few of your GLBT heroes and say a few words about why you chose them. Joan Jett, for her raw charisma and unapologetic androgynous appearance and muscular self Jodie Foster, for her smoldering queer sex appeal that could never go unnoticed by all the young queer girls who may not have known how to express our desires out loud, but there was Jodie, a powerful and talented sexy through-line on the big screen for many years, helping remind us to act on our instincts! Amy Ray, The Indigo Girls were fresh, poetic, authentic raw talent, sexy together and NOT closeted! They were and 66 boi

still are a great example of the power of pop culture and music to tell the truth about our hearts and souls. Amy Ray, in her solo work, has continued to impress and engage and make a difference, whether it’s GLBT representation or her work supporting other socio-political issues. John Waters, I met him once in my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan and someone asked him for advice and he just said, “Recognize and follow your obsessions”. His early films inspired me both as a filmmaker and as a rabble-rouser. What do you consider to be your most significant contribution to the LGBT community in Chicago and at large? I was a producer on the official Chicago Gay Games DVD in 2006 and then for the Chicago Gay History Project (with Tracy Baim in 2009), in which we interviewed more than 250 people who’ve made significant impact in the community during the last 25 years. Recently, I’ve directed the feature films “Hannah Free” and “Jamie & Jessie are Not Together”, using mostly Chicago cast & crew. These two queer films are now being distributed worldwide. Yea! What are your future goals and aspirations? I’ll continue to make movies about love, underdogs, queer people and sexy women. I want to make a dent in pop culture this way and to infiltrate the mainstream representation of humanity with my own versions of all of the above. I’m working on a new web series this summer about a young lesbian who has never fallen in love, and on a third feature film, a suspense love story, set in a convent. Words of wisdom to the next GLBT generation. Be yourself. And spend your waking hours aggressively pursuing and celebrating friends, ideas and passions that help you find, define, and refine what “yourself” is.

IN THE KNOW, ON THE GO This Just In

It’s hard to believe Pride month is almost gone. It has been a whirlwind of events, parties and numerous excuses for seeing hotties in very little clothing. Before we get to a round up of events and parties on the horizon; let’s take a moment to dish a little, shall we? First, the positive, Sidetrack’s 30th anniversary celebration was a classy affair, as was to be expected. Wonderful hors d’oeuvres, champagne and great music videos, especially a countdown of the bar’s top 30 videos. There were also some screens showing a montage of photos from events held at the bar. Great work guys and gals… Now on to the not so positive news Sharon Needles, the winner of this year’s RuPaul’s Drag Race screwed over the folks at Milwaukee’s Pridefest. She was contracted to perform, host an event and attend a meet and greet. She performed two songs then disappeared. Pridefest president Scott Gunkel provided full refunds to all who paid for the Meet and Greet and issues a press release apologizing. Sharon Needles and her management have yet to respond. Maybe she’s been busy shopping at Party City.
