Last year we talked about record high beef prices that producers were getting and the significant economic boost to our industry. We certainly did create a new bench mark for cattle prices, and that uncharted price level will always be in our minds moving forward. Although it wasn’t totally the healthiest scenario for our industry with prices that high… (risking lower beef consumption due to record high prices for consumers), it was a great opportunity for producers to gain some much needed momentum. Even with the price corrections that have taken place, we are still sitting pretty solid and the overall enthusiasm, for the most part, is as strong as ever. As a seed stock producer, it is interesting, and challenging, to move forward with genetics that will make our cow herd stronger. By stronger, we mean, providing superior longevity, and maintaining calving efficiency, without loosing performance. There are many traits that can be enhanced immensely in one single cross, but we feel that there are no traits that we would want to lose ground on, to enhance another trait. In other words, we see great economic value in ‘balanced’ genetic selection. Our calves are raised with no creep feed, and we feel this is the best possible way to judge how our cows are milking. We also put tremendous effort into making sure that udder quality is part and parcel to our genetic selections. Cows with tipped udders, or large bulky udders, have increased reduction in milk production, and next to bad feet, and being open, this is probably the biggest factor triggering being culled. As a commercial or purebred cattleman, you can be assured that we are continually concentrating on improving all important economic traits. All of the bulls will be scanned for carcass merit and that information will be available prior to the sale on a supplement sheet. If you would like to see the scan results, watch our website as we will have the information posted as soon as it is available. Videos of every bull and female is also available on our website, but if you would like a DVD of the sale offering, let us know and we will send you one. For the past 25 years, Hamilton Farms have had their entire cow herd on an integrated and comprehensive health and production management program. The reason for this is simple; to produce the healthiest and highest quality Angus cattle the industry has to offer. All the breeding females are immunized annually prior to the breeding season against the important viruses (IBR-PI3/BVD-I/BVD-II/BRSV) using a modified live vaccine. Nursing and weaned calves are immunized with the same viral vaccine as well as Histophilus somnus, Mannheimia Hemolytica and a multivalent Clostridial bacterin that includes Tetanus. All of these individual animal health records are kept in an online database called Herdtrax® where everything is continually monitored and audited by the managing veterinarians at Cow/Calf Health and Management Solutions (CCHMS). Here is a heifer that certainly could have been a sale feature, but let’s just say, she had a bad hair day! This is the only Simulator heifer in the offering and that wasn’t because we didn’t have any good ones!! The factory has been closed for good! To our disappointment, Blackcap 27R had to be put down last summer (due to a respiratory tumor) after hanging on through the winter to give us one more bull calf and produce another successful flush. Miss Blackcap 220C is one of many very notable progeny. Blackcap 27R has gone down as one of the matriarchs in our cowherd. Black Belle 046X came to us from Maureen Marston and her first calf was a Tiger daughter which has been retained in the herd and doing an awesome job, plus a bull calf sold to Jenkins Lazy U. Black Belle 46X may have rung the bell when mated to calving ease extraordinaire, HF Syndicate 213Z, producing this lovely female. The Syndicate daughters are honest, fault free heifers…They are wide topped, deep flanked, complete heifers with awesome hair and a very eye appealing style that is hard to ignore. The first Syndicate daughters have calved, and while calving unassisted, and dropping beautiful udders, they also maintain themselves so well.

The first calf crop from “Reflection” has been stellar! The bulls display masculinity with big butts, wide tops and lots of bone and yet the females are very feminine with plenty of mass and muscle shape but sweet front ends with plenty of extension and eye appeal. As mentioned earlier, we can’s stress enough the value of the “Mistress” cow family. It was one of Wacey’s first Angus purchases and the grand dam Mistress 6M is still an Elite/Premier dam as designated by the CAA.

This Tibbie female would be a descendant of the matriarch of all cow families at Hamilton Farms. It is definitely a “few” generations since MVHF Tibbie 15T walked the pastures at HF, but she certainly got the ball rolling for these two enthusiastic Angus breeders with big dreams for the future. The grand dam of 251C was a 2000 model and she left us with 10 calves, 4 females retained in our herd and others into herds like Bandura Ranches & Poplar Meadows Angus. Here is the youngest heifer in the offering, but her pen mates will certainly not out do her. Her numbers are stellar with a spread from birth to yearling that is over the top. She definitely has what it takes to be in the top cut despite her age. She is very correct, has lots of capacity, great hair and a presence about her that demands attention. Her dam is a Tiger daughter with that flawless udder that Tiger consistently passes on. This heifer posted a 72lb BW and a 709lb WW with nothing more than mom’s milk and green grass. Those are the kind that will work for you! Here is an excellent heifer for that younger calf division next fall!

In Tribute… Gary Smith was one of those guys that everyone knew, and who knew everyone. Countless people from around the world who were involved in agriculture experienced his wry sense of humour and business savvy. Gary was a trailblazer in the tough and challenging business of export marketing, and was responsible for negotiating sales of thousands of head of Canadian cattle to worldwide destinations. We will surely miss his calls… arranging tours for delegations from Mexico, Russia, Japan, China, Columbia, South America, Kazakhstan…where ever they were from, Gary had the unique ability to make friendships and gain their trust so that contracts could be signed. It was always a great pleasure and honour, for us, to be a small part in welcoming these visitors to the Canadian way of raising beef. Our industry lost a great ambassador, as well as a great friend.

Thank you to everyone who supported Rick Silbernagel on his road to recovery! The Beneﬁt, hosted by Mike and Val Graham, Crossﬁeld, was a huge success!
