The Centre for American Studies is proud to introduce our new graduate journal in American Studies - The Body Electric. Launched in 2012, this peer-reviewed journal will be the first printed graduate publication focussing on American Studies in Canada.
In 1867 Walt Whitman's added the line "I sing the body electric" to a poem in his collection Leaves of Grass. Nearly a century later, Ray Bradbury published a science fiction anthology with that same line as its title. This year, American recording artist Lana Del Rey titled one of her songs "Body Electric." When Whitman coined the phrase, "electric" had not yet entered common usage in American vernacular; 145 years later, his phrase is still part of the American cultural psyche. It's this artistic and cultural heritage that our journal draws upon in its exploration of the most dynamic and volatile period in America's history -- the period from the mid-19th Century to the present day.
