Bishop Unveils Brand New Look

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT/PRINCIPAL

Dear Friends of Bishop Montgomery, Each month our school community gathers in the gym to celebrate Mass. These are our most important events, our most important celebrations. This is a time when we come together to pray, to give glory to God from whom all our blessings come, and to honor each other in community. At the end of each Mass, I have an opportunity to speak to our students—Over the last fifteen years that I have been Principal at Bishop Montgomery, I mark these moments as among the most important and the most precious. At one of our recent Masses, I spoke to the students about love. I wanted to share my remarks here: Almost every song we listen to addresses love or the lack of it in its lyrics. There is a line by Eric Clapton that I love, “I know that I am loved, so I can be on my way.” Love expressed in this line is not love directed inward or love that weakens or excludes. It is instead, love that offers freedom, purpose, support, power—Love that proclaims—you are not alone. It speaks of the power and the possibility of love—the power of connection—the power of community. When I examine my life, my experience is that there have been many people who have loved me so that I could be on my way—to be educated, to be independent, to understand myself and my desires as well as my obligations; to take risks, to say yes to something new, and to say no to what is not good for me. Think of those people in your life who have opened the door to your heart because they really knew how to love you—love you unselfishly—and so made it possible for you to grow, to have opportunities to be educated, to explore, to accept grace, to try something new, to be less afraid, to be able to love others in the same way that you were loved. In the presence of this kind of love, we become our best selves. Who are those people who have anchored you with their love, their acceptance of who you are—really who you are with your gifts as well as your faults—and who have given you the courage to be on your way? Who are those people that you have been able to count on, to lean on, and for whom you have been that person? St. Paul says it this way in 1Corinthians13: “But I shall show you a more excellent way: If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels but do not have love, I am like a sounding brass or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…..So faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” This kind of love—real love—makes it possible for us to know that we are loved and to be on our way. This is the love I wish for you, to receive and for you to be able to give to others. This kind of love-real love—proclaims that we are not alone; you are not alone. We build our lives together every day, here, in this community and depend on each other to work at putting away childish things, to be our best selves. Every day in my encounters with you, my dear students, are small moments of grace that open the door to my heart, that tell me that I am accepted for who I am, that tell me that I am loved so that I can be on my way. I pray every day that in some small way I can be that for you, but more important, that you can be that for each other and so you will know that you are not alone. “So faith, hope, and love remain, these three: but the greatest of these is love.” I share these remarks with you, our friends of Bishop Montgomery, because your continued love for our students, your selfless contributions to their growth as persons of faith are example of real love, love that makes it possible for them to be their best selves, to know that they are not alone but part of a greater community, and to know that they can ultimately “be on their way.” Thank you for your continued generosity. We pray for you. We thank you. With Gratitude,

Rosemary Distaso-Libbon President/Principal

The Latin word Veritas is defined “truth.” In Roman mythology, Veritas was the goddess of truth, a daughter of Saturn and the mother of Virtue. Veritas is also the name given to the Roman virtue of truthfulness, which was considered one of the many virtues any good Roman should have possessed. “Veritas” is included in many university mottos as well, including Yale University’s Lux et Veritas (Light and Truth). Veritas is also the motto of Harvard University, and the Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Church. The BMHS motto is “justice, truth, honor” and the case can be made that all pursuits, if they are valid, must first be rooted in truth. We, as a school community, certainly strive to achieve that goal. VERITAS magazine is published two times a year by the Development Office of Bishop Montgomery High School. Bishop Unveils Brand New Look

eeping up with the fast pace of today’s world is always a challenge. In the last issue of Veritas, we highlighted the multitude of ways Bishop Montgomery is teaching the technologically-saavy students of this generation. Computers, the Internet, iPads, and email are now considered basic tools used by students to help them through their classes, projects, research, and homework. The explosion of social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube has changed the way information is disseminated, connecting people in far-off places (I am “checked in” at Bishop Montgomery High School as I write this), and delivering news as it is happening. In the last few years, Bishop Montgomery has jumped into the social media pool with both feet. There are four Facebook pages administered by the school and we are on Twitter (@BMHSKnights). The school website is constantly evolving; visitors are now able to watch videos, listen to recordings from the music department, make online donations, and shop at BMHS’ online store. Yet, even with all of these developments in technology and social media, Bishop Montgomery continued looking for ways to advance its brand and market itself to a wider audience that demands innovation. Enter the new Bishop Montgomery logo and a new era of Knight Pride.

COVER STORY In 2008, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Department of Catholic Schools launched a program for all elementary and secondary schools to employ standard, along with new and creative, marketing techniques to reach a wider audience of potential students. Bishop’s marketing and admissions departments made some changes to existing marketing opportunities including Open House, high school recruitment visits, and the school website, but decided to take it one step further. “After looking at ways we could market ourselves differently,” explains Andy Marafino, BMHS Director of Marketing and Public Relations, “we thought that it would be an exciting time to evolve and re-brand the school. Not only was the old Knight mascot logo complicated in form and difficult to identify with, it was almost impossible to reproduce cleanly on apparel and other gear.” After researching branding companies, BMHS started a relationship with Global Village Concerns (GVC), a San Diego-based marketing and branding company that works with schools and non-profits. GVC’s goal is to help schools grow, organize, and activate their existing networks and raise recurring revenue through their B1self branding program. Currently, Bishop Montgomery receives 20% of every purchase made in ABOVE: its B1self-hosted online store.

Montgomery, the students, the alumni, teachers… everything. They wanted to know all about the school before designing our logo, and I think we all appreciated their time, effort and careful consideration of what makes our school unique.” After discussing the school’s wishes and seeing a few drafts, Bishop Montgomery had a new brand designed by world-class graphic artists.

The design of the new logo began with a conversation with GVC’s expert brand design team. Over the years, GVC has rebranded many high schools in southern California, helping them create contemporary logos while generating funds through online stores. “Talking with GVC’s design team was a unique experience,” explains Marafino. “We spoke for several hours about the history of Bishop

With a new brand in place, BMHS continues to evolve in an effort to provide the school community with an identity of which we can all be proud. Knight Pride is more than the logo worn on a t-shirt, sweatshirt, or uniform. Knight Pride is about what the logo represents and how each person represents the school. “We hope to see everyone - students, parents, kids, alumni - wearing Bishop Montgomery branded apparel and showing their Knight Pride,” explains Marafino.

“Developing the new brand for Bishop Montgomery High School, including the mascot, official school logo and secondary marks for athletics and clubs, provided us with a unique opportunity to test our design and branding skills,” explains Diane Roche, GVC’s Chief Marketing Officer. “While most schools are focused either on academics or athletics, Bishop Montgomery represents three equally important areas of development: academics, athletics, and spirituality. As a Catholic school, we wanted to ensure that this solid foundation was also firmly rooted in its identity.”

With the new Bishop Montgomery logos in place, Global Village Concerns began creating a custom designed B1selfShop. com online store which leverages BMHS’ new brand through a broad variety of fashionable designs and styles—similar to the (l to R) Teena Roshini ‘14, Paulette Casillas ‘14, and Micah Burog ‘14 model apparel availway top colleges and professional able in the new BMHS online store. sports operate. “B1self is about beIn June 2010, Marafino and Asing inclusive versus exclusive. COVER STORY

The New Logos Explained The new Bishop Montgomery High School logos were designed by Global Village Concern’s team of world re-known graphic artists who specialize in branding and marketing. Bishop’s new identitly was created after many months of research by GVC with input from stakeholders at BMHS.

The Knight

The Official Logo

The Knight is stately, confident and honorable. The sword represents strength and serves a secondary purpose as a cross.

The official logo, with its clean lines, subtle details and elegant font distinguishes Bishop Montgomery as a professional, successful institution. We married tradition with the M with Knights in the banner to a more modern, updated design within the official logo.

Secondary Logo

Since the official logo is traditionally only used on the website, stationary, diplomas, the front of the school and other limited areas, we wanted to offer a secondary logo that could have a broader range of use for the clubs, sports and other organizations. We designed the secondary logo where Knights can be replaced with Football, Robotics Club, Band or any other organization name.

Official Text

When we were asked by the Athletic Director to maintain Knights with the sword as the T as part of their long-term tradition, we wanted to be sure this was also integrated into the school’s identity. We chose our fonts for this purpose and created a secondary mark that didn’t require the Knight for added flexibility. We then added athletic marks that can be used on team uniforms, fashion gear and much, much more!

First Athletic Hall of Fame Class

A

fter a few years of thought and planning, Bishop Montgomery started a new tradition in 2011 with the creation of the Athletic Hall of Fame. With such a long tradition of athletic excellence and a school rich in history, members of the hall of fame committee were tasked with creating something of which the entire school community could be proud. On September 16, 2011, ideas became reality when the first BMHS Athletic Hall of Fame class was inducted during two ceremonies held on campus. “The time was definitely right to have an Athletic Hall of Fame because Bishop has produced so many wonderful athletes and teams over the years,” explains BMHS Director of Marketing Andy Marafino. “Bob Jamison ‘68 has really been the catalyst behind this and we are grateful for all his foresight and hard work in getting the Hall of Fame off the ground.” Prior to the Knights' football game against El Segundo, during a ceremony in the gymnasium, banners honoring the inductees were unveiled and the honorees were introduced. At halftime, the honorees were recognized at mid-field and were presented with their awards. Following the presentation on the field, the hall of famers had their pictures taken at the victory bell. What made the event so special was that almost every honoree was on hand to be recognized by the community. “What I will remember most about this first class is that so many of the honorees were able to attend the event,” stated Marafino. “It says so much about the impact Bishop Montgomery had on their lives and about the friendships and memories they forged while they were here.” Even those not able to attend were represented by either family members, coaches, teammates, or a combination of all of the above. Inductee AnnaMaria Fernandez-Ruffels ‘78, who resides in Australia, was represented by

her mother and high school coach, Dolores Fernandez, and one of her sisters, Elisa Fernandez-Zimmerman ‘81. Kit Schwartzman-Vela ‘86 was not able to attend due to her duties as head women’s soccer coach at the University of New Mexico. However, representation for her came out in full force in her parents, Dr. Eugene and Connie Schwartzman, and her high school coach, Nancy Clarke, and her husband, Jack. “Although I wasn’t able to attend,” wrote Vela, “my parents and friends that did go, and accepted my award, were so very honored and proud of the entire presentation. I cannot thank [the committee] enough for including me in such an elite group of honorees. I am proud, beyond words, and thankful to be a part of something ‘greater’ than the individual - the entire program represented.” The campus ceremony was just the beginning, however, for SchwartzmanVela. Just two weeks after the induction ceremony, Schwartzman-Vela and her UNM team were in San Diego to take on San Diego State and she received a surprise when Marafino arrived to show her the hall of fame banner. Her dad, also there, presented her with her award. “Since she couldn’t come to the ceremony,” explains Marafino, “we thought we would bring the ceremony to her.” For the 1967 baseball team, the induction ceremony was a chance to be reunited with not only each other, but with their coach, Marv Wood, as well. In all, 15 of the 19 players were in attendence, some of whom had not been on campus in many years. “What a great opportunity to reconnect with those from the early years,” commented Wood. “I’m thrilled that so many players were able to be there for their induction.” Wood continued: “BMHS is where my journey began and, in retrospect, it is all about the people who become a part of your life along the way.”

The Band is Back in ‘Town ’ A

fter a decade-long absence, the Bishop Montgomery High School band is back. Under the guidance of new faculty member and band director Eric Hankey, the band has already grown from twenty members at the start of the school year to over 50 before the first semester ended in December. The results of all their hard work have been tremendous so far, which is music to the ears of the entire school community. The band made its first appearance of the year at the Knights’ opening football game of the season before a packed crowd at Knights Stadium. Not a big deal until you consider that the group had been together only four days up to that point. “I was extremely proud of all the students’ hard work – with only 4 days of rehearsal,” explained Hankey.

Hankey’s plans for the band are ambitious, but they are already beginning to take shape in the short time he has had to work with the students and the resources at his disposal. In addition to the main BMHS band, a jazz band has already been assembled and the Music Production class, which works on learning to write and perform music for performances and recordings, is in full swing. The different bands are “planning to do concerts both here and in the community,” explains Hankey. “The band will also

Already this year, the different groups have performed at the Homecoming Barbeque, the Barnes & Noble Book Fair at Del Amo Mall, and the Family Open House, to name just a few events. The band is still scheduled to play at a grand opening of the new Chase Bank on the corner of Torrance Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway and march in Torrance’s prestigious Armed Forces Day Parade in May.

Hankey arrived at Bishop Montgomery not only with a wealth of experience, but with a great deal of enthusiasm as well. In between stints at Westchester High School (1996-2000 and 2008-2011), Hankey worked at Lake Placid Middle/High School in New York from 2000-2007. At Westchester, he worked with the marching band, concert band, jazz band, jazz combo, theater productions, chorus, and stage crew. His love for what he does, however, goes back many years before arriving at Westchester High School. “I started playing piano and trombone in 3rd grade,” explains Hankey, who received his Bachelors in Music Performance and Education from Ithaca College (NY), and holds a Masters in Music Education from USC.

continue to be seen both here on campus and out in our community, hopefully for parades, concerts and competitions – maybe even to exotic destinations someday!”

One of Hankey’s and the students’ proudest accomplishments to date was the Music Production class’ release of their first-ever recording on Bishop Montgomery’s own Knight Label! “Our 2011 Christmas album, entitled "Mistletoe & Snow,’ includes traditional and contemporary Christmas and holiday music and other favorites, and was recorded in our Conservatory (the BMHS convent) on our newly assembled 16-track digital recording studio,” explains Hankey. “Thanks to everyone who helped put the studio together, especially [Assistant Principal] Steve Miller, [Music Teacher] Joanne Svarda, our maintenance men, all the parents and friends who donated instruments and equipment, and of course, [Principal] Rosemary Libbon for sharing our vision and making it come to life.” The mornings before Christmas break, the entire school was treated to a preview of the album as it was played over the school’s P.A. system.

FEATURE Due in large part to the enthusiasm of Hankey and the students, response to the band’s revival has been overwhelming, not only from the people on campus, but from football fans, alumni and parents as well. “I was very excited [about bringing the band back],” explains Hankey. “Bishop has a long history and tradition of great bands.” Continuing to build the program is Hankey’s primary focus for now. One of the great things about the band and its success so far has been the willingness of the students to learn as much as they can from both Hankey and each other. Even if a student has never played an instrument before, Hankey takes them in and teaches them. “I’ve tried to meet the students at whatever level they’re at,” explains Hankey. “I’ve been very impressed with all of the talented students who have joined us.”

SUPPORT THE BAND If you are interested in making a donation to the Bishop Montgomery High School Band, there are two ways you can support their efforts: The band is in the process of fundraising to purchase new uniforms (see rendering of new uniforms at right). The band is confirmed to appear in Torrance’s Armed Forces Day Parade, therefore, their target date to have new uniforms is May 19, 2012. Please send donations prior to April 15. The band is also continuing to fill their equipment and instrument needs. Thank you to all those who have donated instruments and or sound equipment thus far. They are still looking to add the following instruments: • Grand piano • guitars • bass guitars • keyboards • drumsets

• flutes • saxaphones • clarinets • trumpets • other brass instruments

If you would like to make a financial contribution to help pay for new band uniforms or instruments, or you have instruments or music equipment you would like to donate, please contact Eric Hankey, Band Director at ehankey@bmhs-la.org or Andy Marafino, Director of Development at amarafino@bmhs-la.org.

NEWS FROM BMHS

Class of 1961 Celebrates 50th Reunion During Homecoming Weekend All Bishop Montgomery graduating classes ending in “1” held reunions in 2011, but none was more significant than the Class of 1961’s 50th reunion held over Homecoming weekend (October 21-23). What made the reunion so special was that so many members of BMHS’ first graduating class participated in the events that took place. The festivities began on Friday as members of the class enjoyed some food at the Homecoming BBQ prior to the Knights’ 24-0 victory over Don Bosco Tech. Before the football game, about 25 members of the class served as honorary captains and were at mid-field for the coin toss. After the game, classmates met up at El Torito Grill to cap off the night.

On Saturday morning, members of the class returned to campus where they were given a tour of the school. On Saturday night, over 110 alumni and guests attended the reunion at the Ports O’Call Restaurant in San Pedro where they enjoyed dinner, dancing, and visiting with friends and former teachers. The weekend concluded on Sunday as members of the class celebrated Mass together in the BMHS chapel then headed on over to Lamppost Pizza for lunch. A special thank you to the members of the 1961 reunion committee: Robert Thornburgh ‘61, Maurice Hermeyer ‘61, Mary Ann Frisino-Hunter ‘61, Carol Doran-Holmes ‘61, Alan Lamson ‘61, Mike Hicks ‘61, and Harvey Faurholt ‘61. BISHOP MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL

HONOR ROLL OF DONORS Endowed and Annual Scholarships In the past fifteen years, the scholarship program at Bishop Montgomery High School has grown from one scholarship to over twentyfive. The tremendous growth of the program is due in large part because of the generosity of so many parents, alumni and friends who have chosen to create a lasting gift to BMHS. Endowed and annual scholarship funds are essential to ensuring an economically diverse school community, and are a critical component in BMHS’ tradition of supporting financially needy students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend the school.

Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance Fund The recently established Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance Fund seeks to assist current Bishop Montgomery students and their families who have experienced a financial hardship due to the death of a parent or guardian, loss of a job, or another circumstance which makes it difficult to meet the tuition obligations. It is one of the primary goals of Bishop Montgomery to retain our students who are already enrolled in the school. To that end, we are asking all members of the BMHS community to make a gift to this important tuition assistance fund. A gift of any amount will go a long way in helping the students of Bishop Montgomery. There are several ways you can now make a donation. You can send in your gift in the envelope enclosed in the magazine or you can now make a gift online through the BMHS website. Just go to www.bmhs-la.org and click on the “Give Now” button on the home page. All gifts to Bishop Montgomery High School are tax deductible.

The Robo-Knights Makes Their Debut on Campus

T

his school year marked the debut of a new, exciting club on campus, The Robotics Club, or as they are affectionately known, The Robo-Knights. The club, moderated by chemistry and physics teacher John Sansalone, was designed to attract talented students with various skills to create, design and build a task specific robot. One of Sansalone’s main objectives with the club is to introduce the students to one of the most important careers of the now and the future. “The types of skill sets that we seek and foster,” explains Sansalone, “are computer programming (like LEGO Mind Storm, C Plus …) and designing (like CAD …), structural engineering and design, detailed record keeping (written & photographic), document interpreting, and fundraising. The primary goal of the Robotics Club the first year was to design and build a robot to compete in the US First Robotics competition – First Tech Challenge division. “My hopes were that we could build a robot that would be able to move around on game day in December,” explains Sansalone. After attending a “kickoff” event at Monrovia High School, the club was ready to get to work on their budding ideas. With months of work in the rear-view mirror, the club was ready for the LA County Region game day in Monrovia where each team would compete in five rounds. “Our team produced a good, functioning robot that was competitive,” explains Sansalone. “Unfortunately, we had an unforeseen design flaw that made our robot uncompetitive for three of the rounds; we made adjustments and did well in the other two rounds.” When the competition concluded, the BMHS team finished 16th out of 19 teams in their arena. “Not bad for a first year team, considering some other first year teams were unable to get a functioning robot ready for game day,” explains Sansalone. “So I would consider this a successful first year.”

BMHS Partners With Barnes & Noble Again For the 2nd year in a row, Bishop Montgomery partnered with the Del Amo Barnes & Noble for a book fair to support a local elementary school. On Wednesday, December 7th students from many groups on campus volunteered their time wrapping gifts for customers and reading books to children. Members of the Bishop Montgomery Jazz Band were set up just inside the entrance of the store and serenaded customers throughout the afternoon with classic Christmas songs. Thanks to all who participated, BMHS raised over $500 for Holy Innocents Elementary School in Long Beach to help them purchase books for their students and school. “I look forward to sharing this news with Sr. Madeleine, the principal of Holy Innocents School,” explained BMHS Dean of Student Life Milana McDermott. “I am sure this will help make their Christmas special.”

The club is seeking donations to help off-set the costs of building robots and entering future competitions. Visit the Robotics Club webpage at www.bmhs-la.org for more information and to view pictures and video of their work.

A special thank you to all the students, moderators, clubs, and organizations who volunteered that day, including Campus Ministry, Key Club, Concordia, Friendship Circle, and the BMHS band. In addition to the book fair, the BMHS Habitat Club, moderated by math teacher and alumnus Jake Roehl ‘92 has volunteered to help with some important maintenance projects at Holy Innocents School during the Spring semester.

The 2011-12 Robo-Knights: Georges Bachawati ‘12, Anthony Barreras ‘12, Laura Beck ‘13, Christian Gumacal ‘12, Austin Hentrup ‘12, Jessica Lozano ‘12, Chelsea Meneses ‘12, Trista Meneses ‘12, Cazimir Park ‘12, Tanner Rickard ‘12, Amanda Shimizu ‘12, and Joshua Weigley ‘12.

NEWS FROM BMHS

Student Ambassadors Spread Knight Pride Bishop Ambassadors is not your ordinary club. It is a group of students dedicated to providing a unique service to the entire community. In addition to volunteering for projects and events outside of school, the ambassadors are a presence at many school functions, including Homecoming, the BMHS shadow program, and, most notably, 8th grade admissions visits. Led by their advisor, religion teacher John Fitzsimons, the ambassadors have proven to be a source of energy in the BMHS community.

ABOVE: BMHS Student Ambassadors pose with Bishop Oscar Solis at “An Evening With Angels” event in October.

The 2011-12 school year has been a busy time for the ambassadors. In October, members of the club volunteered at the Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc’s “An Evening with Angels” fundraiser. Anna Totta, Catholic Charities’ Regional Director, praised the ambassadors for all their help at the event. “The enthusiasm that the Ambassadors displayed was contagious,” said Totta. “The event staff and guests were energized by the spirit of the students...they represented Bishop Montgomery with maturity.”

The months of October, November, and December were dedicated to assisting the Admissions office with their recruiting efforts. Almost every day, Ambassadors were either off campus giving presentations to 8th graders at BMHS’ partner schools, or hosting prospective students in the shadow program during the morning. These are great opportunities for the ambassadors to talk about BMHS and show the school to prospective students in preparation for the annual Open House.

BMHS Community Raises Money for Home Walk LA On November 19, approximately 50 members of the Bishop Montgomery community, including students, teachers, parents, and alumni, participated in Home Walk LA. The walk was organized to raise money and awareness about homelessness in Los Angeles. The BMHS “team” was organized by BMHS math teacher and alumnus Jake Roehl ‘92 and Jeremy Sidell, who is married to Bishop Montgomery alumna Melissa McLean-Sidell, Class of 1993. Sidell works for an organization called “Our Faith Matters,” a group which is trying to harness the energy of young people to help fight homelessness in Los Angeles. The Bishop Montgomery group raised $1,100 for the cause! For video of the Bishop Montgomery community in action at the walk, visit http://vimeo.com/32432681

Chris Huben ‘12 Named Top Junior Lifeguard This past fall, the California Surf Lifesaving Association selected BMHS senior Chris Huben ‘12 as the California Junior Lifeguard of the Year for his outstanding work ethic and tremendous skill as a surf lifesaver. Huben was a Cadet at El Segundo in the mornings, but also chose to stay to work afternoons as well. Often times in the summer, Huben worked five days a week and two sessions a day, working the same shifts as his instructors. Additionally, he worked weekends in the lifeguard towers and volunteered on busy days assisting lifeguards in keeping the public safe. Of the 180 rescues made this summer by the 47 cadets, 59 were made by Huben, who used the skills he learned as a Junior Lifeguard to bring struggling swimmers safely to shore. After working at Dockweiler Beach on the July 4 weekend, he received high praise from the lifeguard he was paired with. “He read the ocean great and could sense when things were going to go wrong before they did,” explained the senior lifeguard. “He hit the water every time he needed to and didn't hesitate when he was unsure...he performed just as well as most guards I've worked with and what he lacked in experience he made up for with energy and proactive guarding.”

Three Student-Athletes Travel “The Road Not Taken” London Bennett ‘14 Seven years ago, sophomore London Bennett ‘14 began competing in gymnastics because her mother always told her she was “a little daredevil.” Training at the All Olympia Gymnastics Center in Los Angeles, Bennett specializes in the vault, but her favorite event is the floor excercise because, as Bennett explains, “I can express myself more.” Four days a week for four hours a day, Bennett trains towards her ultimate goal - to compete for UCLA. Last year, as a Level 5 gymnast, Bennett placed 3rd allaround in California. Asked how she juggles school, gymnastics and running track at BMHS, Bennett says, “I do it because I have to do it. My parents hold me to high values and I want to make them proud.” Carrying a GPA of around 4.0 is proof that Bennett is not only doing “it,” but she is getting “it” done.

Lauren Campbell ‘13

Junior Lauren Campbell ‘13 has been skating since she was 5 years old and has been doing so competitively since she was 9. Skating out of the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club, under the guidance of former US Olympian Tiffany Chin, Campbell’s ultimate goal is to compete in the 2014 Olympics in Russia. In November, she placed 7th in the junior division at the Pacific Coast Sectionals in Utah, and this year, she will test to become a senior level skater. Practicing six days a week (about 15 hours total) doesn’t leave much time for other things, which makes her 4.3 GPA even more impressive. “I manage my time with discipline and staying focused,” explains Campbell. “If I can squeeze in 10 minutes of studying here and there, I do it. Otherwise, I just lock myself in my room at night and get my work done.”

Alumnus Named to High-Ranking Baseball Office On October 31, 2011, former BMHS baseball standout and recent Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Bill Bordley ‘76 was named Vice President, Security and Facility Management for Major League Baseball. In his new role, Bordley will be responsible for establishing and directing all of MLB’s security and facility management policies, procedures and programs. Bordley will work closely with the security and stadium operations personnel of all 30 Major League Clubs. After high school, Bordley went on to be an All-American at USC and pitched in the major leagues with the San Francisco Giants. In 1988, Bordley began his career in the Secret Service working on task forces and cases targeting electronic crimes, identity theft, and Internet fraud. He also was assigned to the Presidential Protection Detail for President Clinton.

Richard Duval ‘14 Even though he has been fencing for only 3 years, sophomore Richard Duval ‘14 has put together an impressive list of accomplishments. In his first tournament in 2008, Duval, below in blue socks, placed 8th out of 32 athletes. In 2009, he was the Southern California Youth Champion in the unrated division and, this past July, he placed 16th in the nation at the Summer Nationals in Reno. “I became interested in fencing by watching the Olympics and going to my cousin’s tournament,” explains Duval, who trains out of the Beverly Hills Fencing Club. Also a member of the basketball program at BMHS, Duval says that fencing has made his footwork better on the basketball court, and his athleticism in basketball has made him a better fencer. “Fencing has also given me confidence,” states Duval, who hopes to one day fence at USC “to help grow the sport on the West Coast.”

Former Volleyball Coach Kim Willeman Inducted into CIF Hall of Fame Former longtime BMHS girls' volleyball coach Kim Willeman was inducted into the CIF Hall of Fame at a ceremony on October 20, 2011. One of Willeman’s former players, Celeste Adams ‘94, introduced Willeman at the ceremony in Long Beach. Willeman coached at BMHS from 1986 - 2006 and led the girls' volleyball program to eight league titles, seven CIF titles, and three State titles. She coached many All-CIF players, including nine CIF Players of the Year, and four All-Americans.

D EVELOPMENT ADVANCING THE MISSION OF BISHOP MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Friends of Bishop Montgomery, Welcome to the 2010-2011 annual report edition of Veritas magazine. This is our favorite issue because it gives us an opportunity to say “Thank You’ to all of you in our community who have made a financial contribution to Bishop Montgomery. Every gift is important because EVERY gift directly helps the wonderful students of Bishop Montgomery High School. We are so proud of what our students accomplish every year, and they could not succeed without your support.

Following Christmas break, BMHS established the Queen of Angels Tuition Assistance Fund to assist current Bishop Montgomery students and their families who have experienced a financial hardship due to the death of a parent or guardian, loss of a job, or another circumstance which makes it difficult to meet the tuition obligations. More details on how you can make a contribution to this fund can be found on page 21 of the magazine. In addition to these developments, we are also very proud of the BMHS website and the way in which we are able to provide you with information. Visitors to the website are now able to watch videos, listen to music from our bands and music department, and click on the quick link that takes you directly to our new online store. We also have a section called “BMHS in the News” where you can catch up on articles about BMHS that you may have missed. Finally, parents, alumni, and friends of BMHS are now able to make an online gift to Bishop Montgomery by simply clicking on the “Give Now” button on the homepage. We hope all of these developments make it easier for you to enjoy all that

The coming months are sure to be exciting times here on campus as many projects are planned to make our school and our campus even better. Construction on the new retreat center (at right), located where the Franciscan House once stood, is under way and is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2012-13 school year. This retreat center was made possible through a gift from the George and Virginia Schneider family and will be a wonderful addition to campus. With the completion of the building, freshmen and sophomores will have a sparkling new venue in which to have their annual on-campus retreats. It will also be a place where Campus Ministry students can hold meetings and plan service projects and Masses.

BMHS has to offer.

Another exciting development on campus is the Kathryn Kelly Memorial Grotto Renovation Project. The project is named in memory of Class of 1991 graduate Kathryn Kelly, who passed away in January of her senior year. Proposed enhancements to the grotto adjacent to Knights Stadium include installing a new stone grotto wall, replacing the existing concrete slab with paver stones, installing new irrigation, plants, and decorative lighting, and installing new benches and refurbishing the existing memorial plaque. The entire cost for the project is approximately $10,000.

Once again, thank you for your support of Bishop Montgomery. We hope you enjoy reading Veritas magazine. It gives us great pleasure to bring you each and every issue. We look forward to your continued support of Bishop Montgomery and our students. Gratefully,

Colorado Rockies minor leaguer Mike Zuanich '04, and Arena League Football player Josh Jones '05 (Utah Blaze) returned to campus to visit with the prospective students. As the 8th graders entered the gym, each were given an 8 1/2 X 11 glossy collage of the four athletes. The students were then shown a video of the athletes in action prior to hearing from each of them. Following the pep rally, the 8th graders lined up to get autographs and pictures. “The 8th graders were so excited to meet the alumni,” said Andy Marafino, Director of Marketing. “It was truly a unique experience for the students, and all four [alumni] were so gracious to come back to campus and give of their time. We are truly thankful.”
