Fred astaire, Ginger rodgers, Ingrid bergman, humphrey bogart, Gene kelly, rita hayworth. These stars are remembered eternally in striking black and white film. sure, color rules our lives, but there is something so special about the simple combination of black and white. The way the light illuminates. The way black, white and gray injects instant glamour. The way the absence of color demands a second look. black and white adds glamour, drama and intricacy to a world that is continually saturated with color. The classic little black Dress instantly grants the chic qualities of couture fashion houses on pieces that more likely came from h&M. a dark smoky eye bestows intrigue and sex appeal with every batted eyelash. a bright, white coat gives a flash of elegance to the dreary winter ahead. as the new year gains momentum, blVD brings you the best black and white has to offer; from the chicest black and white patterns you need to be wearing now, to the dangers of blacking out. so in 2012, let’s stop and look at our closets, our jewelry boxes, and our lives in black and white. Trust us, it’s much more glamorous living in the grayscale.

f the eyes are windows to the soul, then smoky eyes are edgy, luxurious draperies surrounding them – sexy, mysterious, coaxing suitors to come closer. Despite the appeal of such a bold makeup look, many are afraid to attempt it for themselves. Applied slowly and with a step-by-step approach, anyone can become the girl catching everyone’s eye, dripping with the intrigue of a smoky eye.

1. Prep your eyelids – nothing ruins a smoky eye

like an eye shadow crease. Use either translucent powder or primer all over the lid and directly beneath the eye. Try Urban Decay’s Eye-shadow Primer Potion to glue eye shadow to lids.

2. Line the top and bottom rims with a black

pencil liner. Bigger eyes can pull off a line all around the eye, but if you have smaller eyes, start the bottom line in the middle of the under-eye, and work your way to the outer edge. Use a Q-Tip to smudge and soften the edges of the liner.

3. Apply black shadow directly over the pencil liner

with an eyeliner brush to further set and soften the look. Smudge this with a Q-Tip as well.

4. Use an eye-shadow brush to apply a metallic, light gray eye shadow to the inner third of your eyelid. Put on a few layers until the color really pops. 5. On the second third of your eyelid – the

middle – apply a dark gray eye shadow. Use the eye shadow brush to blend the two shades together, being careful to keep a little bit of the pure light shade visible.

6. Use a black shadow on the final third of your

eyelid, blending it into the dark gray, partially into the crease of your lid, and outward. Make sure the shadow on both lids is even.

7. Dab a creamy, bright white shadow into the inner corners of your eyes. Use the same shadow to highlight your brow bones. 8. Curl your eyelashes, pumping the curler from roots to tips in three increments. 9. Apply volumizing black mascara to top and

bottom lashes, adding several layers for drama. Easy enough, right? Here are a few extra things to remember:

• If you’re fair-skinned and black eye makeup tends to overpower you, try gray eyeliner and avoid black eyeshadow. Stick to lighter shades of gray. • Mastered the basic black smokey eye and want to mix it up? You can easily follow the same steps with varied shades of purple, blue, or green. A smokey eye with lilac or navy blue tones looks gorgeous on all skin tones.

The Best Black and White Shows on the Runway

Chanel Spring 2012 Collection Chanel is a perennial powerhouse on the runway, and this season started with a crisp white suit that spoke softly of the freshness of spring yet to come. The white suit morphed into loose white dresses with sharp black squares, which then lead to a series of soft pastel creations. The show slowly made its way back to its black and white roots, with the final seven looks filled with embellished dresses perfect for a classic night on the town.

Gareth Pugh 2012 Collection Pugh showed a graphic black and white collection that began with a black avantgarde caged top. The hard unmovable edges of the first looks of cut out tops and dresses continued in the architectural lines of the following looks. The fabrics softened the second half of the show, but still retained the sharp graphic prints. The final four looks strayed from the purely black and white palette with shiny deep purple and insect-like head pieces that completely covered the models heads, an ode to his dark, gothic roots.

Emporio Armani 2012 Collection Jason Wu 2012 Collection Wu’s smaller collection of 38 pieces was a study in luxurious minimalism, with sharply tailored separates and bejeweled necklines. The collection utilized the gray scale beautifully. The rich charcoals and shiny graphite’s provided depth to the collection while the bright blue, chartreuse, and bubblegum pink accents gave the collection enough punch to keep boredom at bay.

Black and white has never looked sexier than on the Emporio Armani runway. Crystals and sequins accented the black, white, and icy pastel palette Armani used. One dress in particular, with a deep v-neck, artful cutouts, and black crystals exuded sophisticated sex appeal. The models were exact replicas with short blond wigs and thick cat-eyes, continually accentuating the black and white contrast.

Add Pizzazz to Black and White Outfits

W

earing a black ensemble or an outfit of stark white can result in looking scarily similar to a work uniform. However, any fashionista knows that black and white clothing serves as the ideal backdrop for accessories. Scarves, hats or a wide belt can add much needed flair to a basic look. But for adding pizzazz and something

that literally shines, wear jewelry with your black or white look. A black or white top, sweater or dress serves as the perfect setting for your precious stones, bling or baubles.

Think Color

When wearing a colored shirt or sweater, you may fear that a piece of colored jewelry will clash, but with black or white clothing, color adds a much needed pop. A current trend worth adapting is to add large, fun cocktail rings. Consider a ring in a color that never seems to go out of style, such as turquoise. This fashionable shade is a perfect complement to either black or white. At Red Dress Boutique, be sure to check out the “Turquoise Chunk Ring” available for $45. Other options available include an “Emerald Wrap Ring,” $45, or a “Red Teardrop Ring,” $28. All are beauties that will add much needed glam.

Opposites Attract

If you are going for a classic, highly coveted look – insert Chanel here – then layering black stones on a white top may be your answer. Or vice versa, such as pearls on your chunky black sweater. The contrast speaks volumes. Large, stunning pearl drop earrings are also available at Red Dress Boutique for $44. Or, choose the “Chains and Pearls Necklace,” which is available for $30. This necklace will look beautiful layered on a black cardigan.

Heavy Metal

Jewelry can be an investment, so buy smart by purchasing something you know will stick around on the runway and in fashion magazines. Silver and gold jewelry meets this criterion as they are here to stay in the fashion industry. But, not all metal jewelry has to put a dent in your bank account. Entourage has several gold and silver cuff bracelet styles at budget friendly prices. The “Michelle Bracelet” is a thick cuff that comes in both gold and silver, and retails for only $8. Another $8 Entourage find is the “Remi Bracelet,’ which resembles an elegant gold leaf. While these finds at Entourage may not require saving up, you can rest assure that they will be stylish for years of wear.

So Charming

While charm bracelets may make you think of your childhood, and how you were always jealous of the girl who had more charms than you, a pendent necklace with a charm is simple yet fun and stylish. Animal charms are currently popular, so look for your favorite furry friend in pendent form. Pitaya has affordable charm necklaces that include a beetle, peacock or owl pendent for a mere $12. The peacock and owl are adorned with rhinestones for added bling, and it is safe to say the beetle will serve as an excellent conversation starter at your next party.

The boutiques of Athens have you covered for all your jewelry needs, but consider browsing through thrift stores for unique and highly affordable pieces. Another option for answering your jewelry wishes is to browse Etsy.com. Jewelry makers post one-of- a- kind creations, and are often willing to make custom pieces, so that navy and chartreuse necklace you have been dreaming about is a possibility. This website offers thousands of jewelry options. Plus, you can find jewelry at your price point, no matter how little you want to spend

About Last Night… G

oing out for a few drinks with some friends after a stressful week can be nice way to unwind. but sometimes, things can get a little out of hand. one drink too many can lead to inappropriate behavior, irrational actions, and even black outs where you wake up the next day and can’t remember anything that happened the night before. These black outs can land you in dangerous situations. blacking out should not be confused with passing out. Passing out indicates that a person completely loses consciousness. blacking out, which is also called alcohol-induced amnesia, occurs when a person maintains consciousness while drinking, but has no recollection of events or actions that took place the night before while drinking the next day. People tend to black out when their blood alcohol content has risen rapidly. This can be caused by having too many drinks within a short amount of time, or by not eating before drinking. The brain enters a stage where it cannot store information properly. “alcohol impacts how the brain can function

efficiently,” said Deanna Walters, the alcohol and other Drug Prevention coordinator at the university of Georgia health center. The brain sends signals in a disorganized manner, and there may be something that keeps memories from being stored. Thus, people are not able to store events or actions that they witnessed or took part in during this stage. now, people can either go through total black outs where they don’t remember anything, or partial black outs, where a person can bring up events from the previous evening, thus triggering memories. regardless of the type of alcoholinduced amnesia a person undergoes, he or she is still at risk of engaging in dangerous behavior. “The dangers include engaging in behavior that doesn’t take a lot of forethought, or where you inadvertently put yourself in dangerous situations,” said Walters. “There’s risk for trips, falls, and accidents.” In fact, these are causes of many alcohol-related deaths, added Walters. blacking out can also cause significant brain damage down the road, as it impairs how the

“Blacking out from alcohol is causing a minor type of brain damage,” said Walters. “Even doing it once or twice isn’t good.”

brain functions. heavy drinking, blacking out, can actually impair for 30 days afterward. People can engaging in conversation, and it work or school performance.

which can cause abstract thinking have a hard time may even affect

Women, who have blacked out, are also at a higher risk of being sexually or physically assaulted. legally, a man or a woman can’t give consent to sexual activity while under the inuence of alcohol, said Walters. There are certain factors that women have to take into consideration when they drink, because they can affect how alcohol affects them. Women, who are on their period or on birth control pills, are more sensitive to alcohol’s effects. Men also have a larger amount of a certain enzyme that metabolizes alcohol than women do, and this affects how alcohol can impact a woman. To avoid the chances of blacking out, women should eat a substantial meal before drinking, and also eat snacks while drinking. limiting the number of drinks you consume

will also decrease the likelihood of blacking out. Walters recommends drinking one standard drink per hour, and one standard drink depends on the type of alcohol. For example, one 12-ounce beer, 4 ounces of wine, and 1 ounce of 80-proof liquor each count as one standard drink. blacking out from alcohol frequently can also be an indication of a much larger problem. It may not be a sign of alcoholism, but there could be another issue that should be addressed. More than that, it could have prolonged effects.

Crazy for Coconut Oil 10 Unique Ways to Use Coconut Oil BY DANA J. HORTMAN

W

ho doesn’t love a good, homemade remedy? While some of us would rather spend a few extra dollars to purchase Neutrogena’s new skin care line, or the premiere moisturizing collection released by Paul Mitchell, others are going more organic, and sticking to more natural ways to stay beautiful. Realistically, especially when most of us are on a budget, finding the money to keep up our beauty routine can be a hassle. But, did you know that most oddities you’d find in the kitchen serve more than just flavorful purposes? Indeed, coconut oil is one of them. Even though it contains about 90 percent saturated fats, coconut oil does offer great features that benefit the body. From natural antioxidants to antibacterial properties, coconut oil can be used in multiple ways. Here are 10 different ways to use coconut oil:

1. Smooth & Silky—Dry and flaky skin

bugging you? Try coconut oil as a natural moisturizer. Rub the oil into your hands and feet for a smooth feel. Apply coconut oil after shaving your legs for a soft, beautiful glow. Coconut oil can also be used to moisturize chapped and cracked lips.

2. Cuticles Need Love Too—If you’re having trouble keeping your nails up to par, look no further than coconut oil. Besides moisturizing, coconut oil also has the ability to hydrate even the toughest of nails. To prevent brittle nails or hangnails, put a little bit of oil on the nail and massage thoroughly.

3. B.O. Under Control—Tired of that

embarrassing smell that even Dove can’t help? Or that icky smell from your favorite pair of shoes? Coconut oil contains an antifungal, and refreshes even the most vile body odors. Take the oil, and rub it on your feet and underarms to avoid bad odors.

4. Pimple Please—Who doesn’t battle the

occasional blemish? The lauric acid found in coconut oil acts as a natural acne fighter without drying out the skin like most skin-care products on the market. Dab a tiny portion of oil on your blackhead or pimple, and see a nice result.

5. Tummy Aches, Be Gone—Nothing feels worse

than a bad stomachache after eating too much. But coconut oil can cure such an ailment. It’s made up of antimicrobial acids that halt indigestion. Sip on hot coconut tea. Or add one to two tablespoons of coconut oil to hot water.

9. Shedding the Weight—Need a little weight loss

boost? Coconut oil contains several fatty acids that aide in losing unwarranted weight. It also is easy to absorb and increases the body’s metabolism. Instead of using regular cooking oil, use coconut oil to roast or fry vegetables such as sweet potatoes and asparagus.

6. Scratch No More—Have you been bitten lately by a 10. Lube Me Up—Goodbye KY, hello coconut oil. Since pesky mosquito, and now have an infection? Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory agents that relieve the skin and prevent the itch almost instantly. Apply an ample amount of oil onto the bug bite, rash or infected area for fast relief.

7. Control That Mess—There are good days, and then

there are bad hair days. Though there are numerous products to control frizz, coconut oil does just the same at a smaller price. Apply a very tiny amount of oil to tame even the worst frizz. Remember, a little goes a long way.

8. I Can See Clearly Now—Forget waking up with

raccoon eyes from leftover eyeliner and mascara. Like baby oil, coconut oil contains ingredients that can remove even the darkest of eye makeup. Pat a cotton ball with a small amount of oil, and wipe over your eyes gently. It even removes waterproof mascara.

it moisturizes and hydrates, coconut oil can also be used for erotic purposes. It can serve as a lubricant, which can solve any dryness down there, for you or your partner. Use the amount necessary. But, remember, condoms and oil don’t mix.

' GD]]OHUV Black Diamonds Rising Popularity

By: Katie Lindley

A single multi-faceted rock shines mysteriously from a bed of tiny white diamonds. The subtly sparkling surface beckons the gazer to come closer. Black diamonds provide the perfect contrast to traditional white diamonds. These dark dazzlers are stepping out of their previous place as accent stones and taking center stage. With their dark shimmer and surprising hue, their rise in popularity was bound to happen. The prized white diamond may be the most know, but “diamonds can in come in every color, said John Reed, the owner of JWR Jewelers and a graduate gemologist from the Gemologist’s Institute of America. Black is just one color on the spectrum of fancy diamonds from yellow to green, pink to blue. Many times, black diamonds are enhanced making them treated fancy colored diamonds, said Reed. Unlike traditional white diamonds, light does not travel through the stone, instead it reflects solely off the surface, explained Reed. This creates a different kind of shimmer when the stone is placed in the setting. It still shines bright, but does not contain the blinding quality of a white diamond.

The perfect contrast of the dark stone in a metallic setting could be achieved with other dark stones like onyx, but for durability and shimmer, diamonds are the best choice. “The surface [of other stones] is not polished nearly as high and as crisp as a diamond would be,” said Reed. Reed is seeing most black diamonds in a rose cut, “which means they’re cut with facets all the way across the top of the stone.” The rose cut is a cut that was popular in the nineteenth century before widespread electricity. This cut gave the stone the most sparkle under candlelight and gas lamps, and it’s making a comeback giving glorious luster to black diamonds. Price also proves to be a motivator when choosing black diamonds. Black diamonds tend to cost significantly less than white and other fancy colored diamonds. Because they are much more common than white diamonds and they garner less demand, these dark dazzlers allow those who need diamonds in their jewelry boxes to make investments in beautiful durable pieces that are sure to gain value as the popularity of black diamonds continues to increase. Reed has seen about a $400 increase in the price of a carat sized stone in the past two to three years. Black diamonds have emerged from their shadow to take a spot in jewelry design formerly reserved for the classic white diamond. Fancy colored diamonds add flair and personality to fine jewelry, and at a price that seems almost obtainable, black diamond pieces can be the beginning of a collection that will last a lifetime.

by: kate foster A photographer’s choice to shoot in black and white is often a simple one. The darkest blacks, brightest whites, and varied shades between translate to a feeling of timelessness and elegance. This is especially true when it comes to fashion photography, a medium that took hold in the late 19th century. Some of the most notable names in photography shot the following five fashion photographs before color photography was widely used and offer a golden standard of what will forever remain chic.

The Countess by Pierre-Louise Pierson, late 1800’s

In 1856, Virginia Oldoini, the Countess of Castiglione, appeared in 288 published photographs. The most famous photo of the collection shows the world’s first fashion model in official court garb, gracefully holding a mask over her right eye. Having such a large amount of photographs taken of oneself in that era was unheard of - the Countess’s sheer vanity jumpstarted the still common notion that fashion models have extremely large egos.

Gloria Swanson by Edward Steichen, 1924

Edward Steichen’s early 20th century work propelled him to legendary status. His photographs of gowns designed by couturier Paul Poiret in 1911 are regarded as the first modern fashion photographs ever published. However, in the 20s his work made him an icon, most notably with a photograph of actress and singer Gloria Swanson in which a sheet of black lace partially obscures her features. It’s no wonder that Steichen held the most prestigious position in fashion photography at the time: chief photographer at Vogue and Vanity Fair.

VQU Puddle Jumper by Martin Munkacsi, 1934

The 1930s brought about a drastic change in fashion photography. Models ran free from their locked-in positions and moved about in a more energetic fashion. Martin Munkacsi was at the forefront of this revolution, shooting the first photos of sporty-looking models collecting glances at the beach. One of his most famous photos, titled Puddle Jumper, shows a girl not on the beach but in the rain, managing to look fashionforward whilst in great motion.

Coco Chanel by Henry Clarke, 1954

People lusted after haute couture during the 50s and 60s, and photographer Henry Clarke pounced onto the scene to lead major fashion shoots for American, British and French Vogue. Often at the other end of his len was none other than fashion connoisseur and icon Coco Chanel. At the peak of his career, Clarke shot Chanel hard at work at her desk, clad in a very Chanel-esque suit, gazing whimsically into the distance.

Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Avedon, 1964

The world was a different place after World War II - fashion photography reflected this. Richard Avedon’s work especially turned photography in a different direction, reinventing the modern woman’s image and depicting her new societal roles. His photo of Elizabeth Taylor is all at once sensual and coy, timeless and in vogue, allAmerican and exotic. As Taylor peers into the viewer’s eyes, the viewer is brought right back to her bare décolletage and flamboyant feathered hair, all captured by Avedon in one magnificent photograph.

FOOD myths dispelled

By: Camille Aig-Imoukhuede

1

The foods we eat are powerful. Not only do they fuel our bodies, but they can increase or decrease our risk for disease, and contribute to overall health. That’s why it is important to make sure that we stock up on the healthy ones, and limit our intake of the not so healthy ones. Eating healthily is hard enough when you know exactly what is good for you. But, add in the various nutrition misconceptions and it becomes difficult to distinguish the best food choices from everything else out there. BLVD met with a licensed dietician, Benjamin Gray from the University Health Center, to get some clarity on some myths surrounding foods from both ends of the color spectrum. We found that while the evidence for or against some foods is simply black and white, others fall in the gray area in between.

Coffee is only good for a quick energy boost.

2

Myths surrounding coffee are numerous and often negative, but studies done by many doctors have suggested that coffee benefits the body in ways more positive and substantial than the commonly associated boost of energy. Though causation has not been proved, some have said that coffee drinkers were less likely to have Type 2 diabetes, dementia, suffer from strokes or heart rhythm problems. Before you consider doubling your number of coffee drinks, remember that the high amount of caffeine can raise blood pressure, and therefore, like many other things, must be consumed in moderation.

Drinking black tea can decrease your risk for cancer. An increasing number of people are drinking black tea, because of the benefiting antioxidants that it contains. The antioxidants in black tea have been shown to be helpful in eliminating free radicals from the body, but a direct correlation between drinking tea and cancer has not been made. Gray noted that those drinking tea for the antioxidants should realize that “not all teas contain the same amount of polyphenol antioxidants.” Some teas contain more nutrients than others. For example, brewed tea contains the most nutrients, followed by bottle teas and then instant teas, according to the National Cancer Institute.

When it comes to high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and table sugar (sucrose), one is more of a health detriment than the other. “Nutritionally speaking, HFCS and Table Sugar are very similar because they contain similar ratios of fructose to glucose,” explained Gray. “Neither one has more of an adverse effect on health than the other.” Research from the American Medical Association has reported that HFCS is not more likely to cause diabetes or obesity than table sugar. According to Gray, a good diet contains low amounts of either, and adheres to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which states that no more than 15 percent of caloric intake should come from foods from the discretionary foods list. This list includes not only sugars, but fats and oils as well.

It really doesn’t matter whether or not you eat whole grains or refined grains, like those found in white bread. With all the whole grain options available to eat—brown rice, whole wheat bread, and even muffins made from whole wheat grains—you may be wondering if the health benefits of whole grains are equivalent to the hoopla surrounding them. The answer to that question is yes. “The important difference between the two is that refined grains lack the germ part of the grain, and therefore contain lesser amounts of key nutrients, like Vitamin B and fiber,” said Gray. Vitamin B is necessary to maintain overall health, while fiber allows us to feel full longer, regulates digestion and lowers cholesterol. For these and other reasons, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans say that approximately 50 percent of the grains we consume should be whole grains.

If you experience migraines, it is because you consume too much salt. This myth is only partially false. Eating large quantities of salty foods can cause hypertension, or high blood pressure, which can cause many different types of pains, including migraines, explained Gray. Some groups of people are more sensitive to salt, and should consume less of it than others. African Americans and elderly people are just some of the groups that fall into the salt sensitive category. “Even those who are sensitive to salt should not assume that salt in the cause of a migraine,” said Gray. “Anyone who experiences more than the occasional migraine should consult a doctor.”

A POP OF

Complimenting Color with Black and White Looks By: Camille Aig-Imoukhuede Black and white outfits are as versatile as a bra with convertible straps. A sophisticated look can consist of black trouser shorts, black tights and a white chiffon blouse, while an edgier take could be ripped black skinny jeans and a white over-sized sweater. However you opt to wear the color duo, the neutral palate makes a great canvas for layering and accessorizing. These winter colors are the perfect hues to complement black and white looks.

Mustard

Mustard is probably the last thing you want on a white blouse, but when it comes to clothing colors, the warmer color pops so nicely against the cooler background. It’s easy to be afraid of the color mustard; it’s loud and won’t play nice with a lot of other tones. Instead of trying to incorporate mustard into an outfit, reverse the roles and make the outfit revolve around the mustard-colored piece you are trying to wear. This allows the color to stand out in a purposeful way that doesn’t look tacky. A mustard cardigan over a white v-neck with black skinny jeans looks oh so stylish.

Midnight Blue

This deep color is often the color choice for evening gowns and other nighttime looks due to the fact that it is similar to black but is less harsh and has a subtle edginess. The tone works best with white and black outfits that don’t need a lot embellishment, perhaps a dress with a fancy neckline or any piece of clothing with an intricate design. In outfits like these, a midnight blue clutch can add a little color variety without competing with the rest of the outfit.

COLOR Raspberry

Raspberry is the older sister of bubblegum pink and bright purple. This hue can break through any outfit’s monotony by adding a touch of femininity without being over the top. Raspberry is an easy color to bring into an outfit because it can be done in so many different ways—as a primary color in an outfit or the color of a few choice accessories. Drape a raspberry-colored scarf over a plain white top to instantly feel flirty and dressed up.

Emerald Green

Fashionistas recognize emerald green as a timeless color, but there are those who equate the color with being matronly. The key is how you wear it. When incorporated into black and white looks, emerald green appears both professional and fashionable. This is because the tone has an air of classiness and sophistication to it that is further brought out when surrounded by neutral colors. It is the perfect color blouse to have poking out under a professional suit. Or, for less professionalism and more style, put a spin on the classic suit by opting to wear black slacks with a white blazer and a silk emerald green top under-

Ruby Red

Although slightly more muted than the standard red, this shade is just as sexy. Where bright red can seem harsh, ruby red is softer and effortlessly chic. When wearing ruby red with black and white, be sure to use it sparingly. Being a member of the red family, this color doesn’t need much help standing out. It will look best when only one component of your outfit is in this shade. You can be as charming as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz with a pair of ruby red wedges and white ankle socks. Just trade the little blue dress for a little black one.

How to get

Pearly Whites on a Budget

Y

ou’re never fully dressed without a smile. While that statement may be true, some of us try to refrain from smiling because of that self-conscious feeling we get when it comes to showing discoloration of our teeth. Though the stores promote and display a wide variety of teeth-whitening products such as toothpastes, mouthwashes and trays, most of the time, those whitening systems break that cute billfold you have tucked away in your purse. Not to mention the outrageous cost of professional teeth whitening. So how do you whiten that smile, maintain it and do it all for a low price? It’s simple. BLVD tracked down two DIY teeth whitening recipes. For all of you coffee drinkers, red wine sippers and those in between, listen, learn and let’s white ‘em out.

DIY Teeth Whitening Recipe #1 For a more detailed approach to teeth whitening, try this recipe. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide baking soda an airtight container a soft-bristled toothbrush Water

1

Take the hydrogen peroxide and mix it with plenty of baking soda to form a paste. Put the mixture into the airtight container.

2

run warm water over the toothbrush. Take the brush and dip it into the paste mixture. softly brush your teeth. keep the paste on your teeth for two minutes.

3

Place the brush under the water and clean the mixture out of the brush. after all the paste has been removed, use the toothbrush and water to clean the paste off your teeth. Make sure to finish rinsing your mouth with warm water. complete steps one to three twice a week.

4

remove the cap off the hydrogen peroxide bottle and use it to fill up water. Place the water in your mouth, but make sure not to swallow. now, take the bottle cap, fill it with peroxide and pour into your mouth. Do not swallow.

5

Wash your mouth with the diluted hydrogen peroxide for one minute. spit out when done. complete steps four and five, twice daily.

DIY Teeth Whitening Recipe #2 For a quicker method, use this remedy. Ingredients: 1 fresh strawberry ½ teaspoon of baking soda a toothbrush regular toothpaste a small bowl

1

Take the strawberry and crush it up in a small bowl. combine the baking soda with the crushed up strawberry.

2

3

Without removing the mixture, brush your teeth gently with regular toothpaste. after brushing, rinse your mouth out. repeat these steps as you see fit.

Through the Wesley Foundation and Crosstrainers Ministry, a local ministry that specializes in one-on-one mentoring for kids in the Athens-area low-income housing communities, Gage Henry, 18, was paired with Malachi Gallagher, 8, to be a positive influence on his life and share with him the gospel. The two meet once a week to hang out at Myers Quad to talk about events in their lives and their futures. Henry became a mentor because he believes that “many of the kids only receive negative impacts from their community, so they need other people to step in to positively influence them and let them know that there is something else out there for them to have a better life,” says Henry.

The two have become very close already, and Henry shares that Malachi asks him questions about growing up. “I can be the big brother that he doesn’t have as well as show him how to be a big brother to his little brother, Caleb, who is 4 years old,” Henry says.

Gage Henry, 18, enjoys some time with his mentee, Malachi Gallagher, 8, on Myers Quad at University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., on November 3, 2011.
