You Be the Judge at Dancing Pros: Live! World’s finest dancers and a famous TV dad waltz into Knight Theater this spring

breaks; we’re not taking commercial breaks. We go from one dance to the next, which requires a tremendous amount of stamina and endurance every night.” Hightower is a featured dancer, along with other “So You Think …” alums Ryan DiLello, Denys Drozdyuk and Antonina Skobina. “The energy level is different from night to night,” says Sliwinska. “If you would watch each performance on tape, you wouldn’t see a difference. But when you’re in the room, and someone has an amazing day, the audience feels it.” Don’t miss Dancing Pros: Live! at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts Sunday, April 19, at 2 and 7 p.m.

ith a blend of artistry and athleticism, passion and lyricism, sass and sophistication, 10 of the world’s most remarkable dancers will heat up the stage at Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts this April in the highoctane dance competition Dancing Pros: Live! And the audience gets to vote for the best of the best. Hosted by “Growing Pains” star Alan Thicke, Dancing Pros is the brainchild of Edyta Sliwinska and Alec Mazo, two gifted “Dancing With the Stars” alumni. The format of the show is reminiscent of, but quite distinct from, “Dancing With the Stars.” Like the TV show, Dancing Pros features a witty host, a three-judge panel, videos about participants and competitive dancing. However, in the stage show, all the dancers are elite professionals. Each couple is showcased in two very different duets that they co-choreograph, and the judges comment on all the performances, but do not give a numerical score. “The judges are there to guide the audience,” says Sliwinska, who serves as a judge. “We give our opinions, but the audience drives the results.” Performing on a large stage, rather than in the confines of a TV studio, enables the dancers to cover more space. The audience, not limited by the eye of a camera, gets a more immersive experience. “I think that seeing this show live onstage will give audiences a really good look at how rigorous, intense and demanding dance is,” says Chelsie Hightower, from both “Dancing With the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance.” “We’re not taking camera

by serving as an essential second set of ears. During rehearsals, Kalia checks sound balances throughout the hall and painstakingly studies and learns all of the programs’ scores in the event that he is needed to step in to lead the orchestra. Throughout each season, Kalia also conducts a variety of performances, including the Symphony’s Lollipops family concerts and Orchestra On Campus, an annual free concert and Symphony education partnership with Central Piedmont Community College. Kalia’s passion for collaboration is evident in his work with Charlotte Ballet, including more than a dozen performances of Nutcracker each holiday season. He is also a proponent of collaborations with visual artists and the use of technology to modernize the concert experience. He regularly leads the Symphony’s preconcert talks. Not only is Kalia in his third and final season as the music director of the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra of Los Angeles, but he will guest conduct the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and serve as guest cover conductor for the Indianapolis Symphony this season. He is also entering his fifth season as music director of the Lake George Music Festival in upstate New York, which he co-founded, and will cover for the St. Louis Symphony this summer.

ebruary is a big month for Assistant Conductor Roger Kalia. Now in his second season with the Charlotte Symphony, Kalia will make his debut on the Symphony’s innovative KnightSounds Series with the Feb. 6 concert, A Waltz to Remember. “The Charlotte Symphony is connecting more and more with younger audiences through the innovative KnightSounds and On Campus concerts, which is extremely exciting,” Kalia says. The concert will feature various Strauss waltzes and polkas, reminiscent of the annual New Year’s Concert with Roger Kalia the Vienna Philharmonic. “I’m so very excited to collaborate with the Metropolitan Ballroom Dancers, plus Katherine Polit, who is an up-and-coming soprano and dear friend,” he says. Next month, the New York native will also conduct his first Pops Series concert, A Symphonic Valentine. Showcasing the local talent of the Noel Freidline Trio during Valentine’s weekend, the concert will highlight romantic favorites of film, Broadway and jazz. That same weekend, Kalia will conduct Beethoven Lives Upstairs, the second Lollipops concert of the season. Covering almost every subscription concert, he has assisted Music Director Christopher Warren-Green and many visiting artists, including Itzhak Perlman,
