Holly Hill and C&J Cattle Bull and Female Sale Catalog

These are good times to be in the cattle business. I thank you in advance for your interest in this sale. The C&J cattle and the HHF cattle run together and are managed as one herd. This makes for more efficient use of pastures and facilities. It also puts more animals in the contemporary groups which makes the ratios more meaningful. Our sale format is not like a typical auction. The animals are displayed in a manner so they can be easily viewed. They do not come through a sale ring. On sale day a list will be available showing the base/minimum price of each animal. Most of the bulls will be in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. I will accept bids starting at the base price. We have used this format for the past four years and most people like it. We make every effort to provide complete information that is easy to read. We do not want to get the bulls overly fat for a number of reasons. I think you will like the condition of the bulls. We are concerned about feet/leg problems. It is difficult to evaluate these in yearling bulls because potential problems are sometimes not noticed until the bull is about two years old. This year we did not include two bulls in the sale offering because of these concerns. Jimmy or I would welcome the opportunity to answer questions or discuss this offering. Please do not hesitate to call us. I can also be reached through e-mail. Sincerely, Dwight Houff DIRECTIONS: Holly Hill Farm is on Route 11, midway between Staunton and Harrisonburg. Take exit 235 off I-81, go to Route 11 and turn left towards Mt. Sidney. The farm is one mile on the left. HERD VETERINARIAN: Dr. Ben Blankenship, Ashby Herd Health. BREEDING GUARANTEE: All bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam. They are guaranteed to be breeders. No feet have been trimmed. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: Cattle sell under the standard terms and conditions as recommended by the American Angus Association. FOOD: In appreciation of your attendance we will provide a light lunch on sale day. EPDS: All EPDs are current from the Fall 2013 Sire Evaluation Report. EPDs with a * are in the top 10% of the breed. GENETIC CONDITIONS: All bulls in this sale are AMF, NHF and CAF or do not have the potential to be carriers for AM, NH or CA. On 8/12/13 the American Angus Association announced that Developmental Duplication Mutation (DD) had been identified. The AAA is not requiring testing for this condition. The Board decided to list potential carriers as [DDP]. If a breeder decides to test some animals, the results will be noted on the registry paper. [DDF] means the animal is “free” of the mutation, [DDC] means the animal is a “carrier” of the mutation. FEEDING MANAGEMENT: The bulls were fed out on a limited concentrate and barley silage. We prefer this ration, which keeps the bulls on feed with less digestive problems and less feet problems. BOARDING BULLS: We can keep bulls for two weeks after the sale at no charge. We can feed and care for bulls for an extended period at a cost of $2.00 per head per day. SALE ORDER: We will start with Lot 1 and follow the brochure. We reserve the right to make slight changes.
