El Pomar’s Student Leadership Experience team has a unique challenge to meet every year as the academic year gets underway. As we aim to meet the mission of SLE, we understand the importance of team building and networking among the scholars. Additionally, we must build a base of knowledge for incoming first-year scholars while expanding the learning of returning second-year scholars. This past Fall Retreat was tactfully organized by our El Pomar Fellows to achieve this mission.

A Letter From Kyle Hybl What we are trying accomplish with the Student Leadership Experience is to encourage the future well being of Colorado and its citizens through a grassroots approach. We search for the best and brightest college students in Colorado that have an interest in the third sector and provide them with valuable leadership programming for two years while supplementing their educational costs. At the three retreats held annually for first and second year SLE scholars, we educate, motivate, and mentor these student leaders and provide them with competencies needed post-graduation. Following this year’s theme, “Developing the Future: The Year of the Selfless Scholar”, students will end the academic year with a toolbox of personal and professional skills along with a deeper knowledge and network in the nonprofit sector. The Trustees at El Pomar Foundation see this investment into the Student Leadership Experience as valuable and are proud to announce El Pomar’s continued commitment to the program for another four years, starting Fall 2013. We thank you for your continued passion and support for the program and are excited to see the scholars at the upcoming Winter Retreat.

Fall Retreat The Fall Retreat held on October 20-21 at Penrose House in Colorado Springs, CO was packed with educational and fun activities for the Scholars. Scholars learned about essential nonprofit know-how and leadership theory in sessions taught by El Pomar Fellows and Staff. Sessions included The History of the Nonprofit Sector, How to Go from Good to Great, Nonprofit Law and Ethics, The Five Practices of Leadership, and more.

Metro State students Destinee Ortega and Megan Gibson help paint walls at the Marion House Soup Kitchen while other SLE scholars cook, serve food, and clean the facility.

In addition to the sessions, scholars volunteered at the Marion House Soup Kitchen; visited three local nonprofits to learn about operations; participated in team building activities; chose nonprofits in their respective communities to study and assist; and listened to two amazing keynote speakers, Nick Kittle and John Olson. Nick, the director of the Colorado Springs’ Office of Innovation and Sustainability, and John, the director of Pikes Peak Better Blocks, are two young, innovative, and driven Colorado Springs leaders. During their keynote presentation to the students, they offered five leadership tips that you won’t find in the textbooks: 1. Shine by letting others shine. Enthusiasm is contagious, and if you can inject your passion into other people’s ideas and enable them to act, the impact on a community can be enormous. 2. Lose the fear of failure. You may recognize the failures you may encounter, but choose to focus, instead, on succeeding.

Behind the Scenes During El Pomar’s 2012 September Trustees meeting, the Trustees voted and approved a grant renewal for the SLE program. The four-year commitment totaled $320,000 and will cover scholarships for SLE Scholars that study at Colorado Leadership Alliance institutions and participate in their respective leadership programs. Additionally, the grant will allow El Pomar to hold three retreats each academic year for scholars in the fall, winter, and spring. The grant will take effect Fall 2013 and will end in Spring 2017.

3. Be passionate or go home. Change doesn’t happen by being unsure or partially committed. Passion drives improvement and transformation. 4. It’s the doing that matters. If you’re not having fun you’re doing it wrong. 5. Take Risks. Make Decisions. Act. Plans sit on shelves and talking about it doesn’t make dreams a reality. With these tips and other lessons learned at this year’s Fall Retreat, we feel confident that the scholars went back to their respective universities with the tools necessary to create positive impact.

Coming Up: Winter Retreat February 9th and 10th - Fort Collins, CO

This upcoming retreat was built around the question, “What can we do to help scholars prepare for the future?” So, to answer this question, scholars will be led through workshops that will include resume building, mock interviews, Myers-Briggs personality testing, and much more. We will also have the opportunity to volunteer for and visit game-changing nonprofits in the area while engaging in dialogue that concentrates on the scholars’ passions and motivations. Temple Grandin is an American doctor of animal science and professor at Colorado State University, bestselling author, and consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior.

Scholars will also be presenting on their Year Long Projects during this retreat. Each university group will give a ten-minute presentation about the nonprofit they chose at Fall Retreat and the project they completed for the nonprofit. Moreover, we have the honor of announcing Dr. Temple Grandin as our keynote speaker for Winter Retreat. Dr. Grandin is a best selling author and speaker on the topics of autism and animal science. She has appeared on programming such as NPR, The Today Show, Larry King Live, 48 Hours and 20/20, and has been written about in many national publications, such as Time magazine, People magazine, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, and New York Times. We are very enthusiastic for this retreat and for the short and long-term impacts it will create for the scholars and the communities of Colorado.
