For the past seven years, Ms. April Sauline, BGHS Director of Instructional Technology, has voluteered for the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. She specifically contributes as a member of the Planning Committee for its largest annual summer program, Camp Cartwheel.

Camp Cartwheel strives to make a difference in the lives of all critically ill children and their families in Southern Nevada through the therapeutic benefits and fun of camp! Slowly word about camp is spreading throughout the Gorman community.

For the past two years, Nikolaos Collins '17 has donated two weeks of his summer to be a Lifeguard at camp, and this year he was joined by classmate, Sydney Pross '17. Even Bishop Gorman’s Visual Arts Department was represented at camp this year when faculty members Amy Dawson and Kevin Calkins graciously gave up their time to teach an art class to all the campers ranging in age from five to seventeen. In past years, alumni Kira Roth '16 and Mariah Boozer '16 spent time working in the kitchen and camp, and even got their Gorman parents involved; Mr. George Boozer has now spent two summers at camp as a counselor and an activities specialist. We can only hope that more members of the Gorman community seek to discover the magic of Camp Cartwheel!

Dear Gaels:

Every five years Bishop Gorman submits itself to the process of accreditation, in which our school conducts a self-study, creates an Educational Improvement Plan, and receives a visitation from a team of educational peers who validate our work. The 2016-2017 school year is an accreditation year, and for this term we will be receiving accreditation not only from AdvancED but also the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA). The protocols used

by WCEA are remarkably similar to the ones we have used in the past; however, there are new components that address the specific needs of Catholic schools including Catholic identity.

Another significant difference in the WCEA protocol is that there is a required set of data that must be collected, and it is from that data that areas of strength and growth must be determined.

The protocol used by WCEA is entitled Ensuring Educational Excellence, or E3 for short. The E3 self-study embraces seven principles of Catholic high school accreditation: 1. The authenticity of a school’s Catholic identity 2. The organizational efficacy of the school 3. The excellence of its teaching and learning 4. The vitality of the school’s co-curricular programs 5. The school’s responsible stewardship of its material resources 6. The school’s commitment to improvement 7. The integrity of the school’s process of self-studying Through the collection of quantitative and qualitative data, Bishop Gorman has already begun to address the first five principles. The surveys that were administered in September along with other collected information will lead to substantial discussion and reflection later this month with our five integral groups, comprised of faculty, parents, and students. From these discussions we will begin to construct our Educational Improvement Plan. Principles 6 and 7 will be addressed by the Visiting Committee who will be on site March 26-29, 2017.

We thank all of you who have participated in data collection and who will assist us in the school improvement process through the WCEA E3 protocol. We look forward to this process that will allow us to continue to progress as an excellent Catholic high school.

Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

The State Leadership Seminar HOBY's flagship program allows high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community. From the desk of Dean McCall The Beale Street Blues Boy, a.k.a. B. B. King stated, “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away.” This is quickly realized even at an early age and we should all strive to be a lifelong leaner.

At Bishop Gorman High School (BGHS) our vision is to be a national leader in college preparatory education in an environment distinguished by Catholic values. We are very respectable at fulfilling this vision with almost 93% of our seniors last year continuing on to a four year educational institution.

However, the application process of just getting there can be a challenge.

One of the most daunting experiences for our high school students is completing the application for college.

Over the years, the college application process has become increasingly difficult. Some of this overwhelming process is by design, it began as a deterrence to students to keep them from submitting an application “just

for the fun of it” with no intention of attending the college. However, now this process has evolved into the accepted process today that is required by almost all colleges.

In August, we invited Mr. Christopher O’Brien to come to BGHS to speak to the juniors and seniors regarding the application process and the college essay that is required as part of the application. Mr. O’Brien is an Associate Director of Undergraduate Admission at Boston College (BC); meaning he is one of their application readers that accepts students into BC. Although there are minor differences of how each college accepts their students, they are all basically the same. The objective of his visit to BGHS was to reduce the anxiety of the college application process by providing them with insight and some useful information. The information he provided was invaluable and he shared some insight that he has learned over the last 20 years at BC. He discussed the dos and don’ts and gave some real-world examples of successful and unsuccessful applications/essays. As a

The student’s curriculum, grades, activities, community service, etc. are all but done. If you go to the BGHS website, there is link to the two Power Points that Mr. O’Brien used for his presentations. Although reviewing the Power Point slides is not the same as attending his presentations, they do provided some insight to the selection process and writing of the essay.

Our College Counselor, Mr. Larry McAllister, provided a schedule of events/sessions in the June 2016 issue of Sharing the Pride that outlines a series of camps, presentations, and fairs that help with the applications process. I would encourage you to take advantage of this; the next event is the College Fair being held at BGHS from 6:00 to 8:00 on October 17, 2016.

ne of the tasks required in the WCEA Accreditation was to create or revisit the Integral Student Outcomes, or ISOs of the school. Previously, these outcomes were known as Expected Student Learning Results (ESLRs).

The major shift from ESLRs to ISOs was that the outcomes should be more about who the students are as opposed to what they can do. A committee of the faculty received training and engaged in a process to build on the ESLRs to produce our new ISOs. Each month in Sharing the Pride, we will focus on one particular ISO.

This workshop was geared toward giving tips on what schools are looking for in the essay, how to brainstorm ideas for their essay, writing a rough draft, and finishing the essay.

All of the counselors participated in making this first Camp a success. As of this writing, 164 seniors took advantage of the camp, most have completed their Common Application and have matched their application to Naviance which is very important as we use Naviance as the electronic tool to send all of their transcripts and letters of recommendation. This senior class is a very strong academic class and we in the Counseling Department are looking forward to their college application journey.

Fall is a busy time for Bishop Gorman athletics. Our sports teams have experienced successful pre- seasons and are ready for league play. All the teams have participated in tournaments and games and are continuing to improve and get ready for the upcoming playoffs.

The Bishop Gorman football team has been on a roll to begin the year. The Gaels started the season Ranked #3 in the country, but quickly jumped to #1 with big wins against several top ranked out-of-state opponents. The team made a huge splash by going into Texas and beating Cedar Hill High School decisively in front of a soldout crowd. The game was televised live on ESPN. The team will play another game

The women’s soccer teams traveled to Reno for the Howell Memorial Tournament in late August. They dominated the event, winning 5 games straight and taking the tournament championship. The women’s team is undefeated this year and looking to make a deep run in the Nevada State Playoffs led by seniors Hannah Borgel, Tavin Hays, and Arlie Jones.

The cross country team is running wild again this year. With over 50 members on the team, they continue to grow and improve. The team is participating in all the top meets in town and several out-ofstate high level events.

The women’s varsity volleyball team is currently participating in tournaments as well as league matches. They are a good group of girls that has great potential.

They should win a lot of league games and will be one of the favorites in the Sunset Division playoffs.

Congratulations to the men's soccer team on winning the Rocky Mountain Cup in Tennessee. Way to go Gaels!!

The men’s and women’s tennis teams and the women’s golf teams are in the middle of their league seasons and are at the top of the division standings. They all have a chance to make an impact in the playoffs.

The Internship Program offers select students a unique opportunity to look into a potential career field during the summer prior to their senior year.
