Hippodrome Creative team and Development Trust Chair Martin Guest meet up with ‘The Nose’.

Dear Supporters We are delighted to welcome you to the latest edition of Supporter Spotlight with our new branding and newly-named education, access and outdoor programme - Hippodrome Creative. Let us know what you think. In fact, there are plenty of changes going on as we prepare to welcome our new Chief Executive, Fiona Allan, who joins us in October from Curve theatre, Leicester. Fiona looks forward to meeting Hippodrome supporters over the coming months. Preparations are well underway for Birmingham Weekender (25-27 Sep), the citywide arts festival which the Hippodrome is producing on behalf of the Birmingham Arts Partnership (BAP). A perfect weekend of FREE amazing outdoor performances for everyone - see you there!

Through his passion for theatre and his highly respected work in the business community, Mark played a key part in raising £1 million towards the successful 2012 Stage Appeal. This major project saw the Hippodrome stage replaced after 30 years of performances, securing our future for a whole new generation of theatre-goers. As a fond farewell, fellow Development Trustees surprised Mark with a dedicated seat plaque in the auditorium. But the bigger surprise was a specially-created ‘Top That’ appearance on the theatre’s giant outdoor plasma screen. In show-stopping style Mark’s image danced to the front of the screen with Top Hat star Charlotte Gooch. A fitting tribute indeed. Looking to the future, Martin Guest is joined by a handful of newly-appointed Development Trustees: PwC’s Andrew Hammond, Matthew Hansell of legal practice Mills & Reeve and BBC Midlands Today Presenter Joanne Malin. Martin Guest said “I’m delighted to welcome Andrew, Matthew and Joanne to the Development Trust. They will make an excellent addition to the team at an exciting time for the theatre. I encourage any individual or business to step forward and get involved with this fantastic theatre and its fundraising.” See the full line-up of Development Trustees on the back cover.

And we’re excited about the launch this month of our year-long Heritage Project. Read about how you can share your Hippodrome memories and donate to help preserve the rich history of ‘the old lady of Hurst Street’ for future generations. Plus, there’s a round-up about some fantastic education and access projects which have been taking place with your support in the theatre and across the city, including the remarkable film Nobody Nose. We just can’t help sniffing out great young talent. Hippodrome Creative has never been more exciting - don’t forget to invite your family, friends and business networks to join in and get creative!

Business Entertainment in The Spotlight A large-scale Gala evening and corporate dinner supported by the business community have raised £18,000 for education and access projects in 2015.

Tip Top Fundraising at Top Hat At Top Hat, 160 guests enjoyed dinner in the Patrick Centre and a performance of this classic musical. Evening sponsor, Laurent-Perrier Champagne helped boost the funds raised on the night from the prize draw and sealed bid auction. Laurent-Perrier’s Tony Carter said, “What a superb evening. We’re delighted to support Birmingham Hippodrome in its fundraising efforts.” 160 guests learned first-hand about our highly regarded work with young people with learning disabilities. Contributions came from Richard Hayhow, Director of Open Theatre who runs the Hippodrome’s drama group One of a Kind and Irwin Mitchell’s corporate volunteer, Hayley Hill. She spoke with passion about the fulfilment of working with the drama group’s participants aged 16-19 years.

Roll-Up, Roll-Up - It’s The Greatest (Fundraising) Show On Earth Studio 5 was styled around a thrills and spills circus theme for the summer corporate dinner to complement Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s visually stunning musical Barnum.

Fundraising on the Main Stage in 2016: It’s Gala Time! The flagship Gala returns for a sixth time to our Main Stage next year for a spectacular night of fundraising. Table sales have never been quicker with nearly 300 guests expected at this event on Sat 14 May 2016. We’re delighted to announce Laurent-Perrier Champagne as a co-sponsor, ACE European Group as Live Auction sponsor and CP Bigwood’s Rory Daly has, once again, generously agreed to preside over the live auction on the night. We’re challenging him to beat his own fantastic target from the last Gala in 2014 - watch this space! As co-sponsor Laurent-Perrier will not only enjoy the specially-commissioned evening entertainment from a premium position, but also take advantage of a package of exclusive benefits. We invite a company to step forward to take up the exciting remaining co-sponsor opportunity and live the show with us! Call Judith on T 0121 689 3082 to start the conversation. Thank you to all our table bookers:

The focus of the evening for 100 guests was the powerful testimonial from Sean Jameson of Spurgeons, himself a former Young Carer, about an area of work which the Creative Learning team has dedicated itself to for the past nine years. Speaking from the heart, Sean told guests about the impact of taking part in the Young Carers residencies at the Hippodrome as a teenager. Sean said, “I’ve been a carer since the age of five. Coming to the Hippodrome was a great experience. I was shy at first but I was made to feel at home with the other young carers. I quickly gained in confidence and look where I am today! I'm so pleased that young carers are still benefitting from this opportunity it really makes a difference.”

Diary Date Heads-Up: Tables for the corporate fundraising event at Mamma Mia on Thu 30 Jun 2016 go on sale shortly - reserve NOW with Rosie Milsom on T 0121 689 3068.

Puttin’ on The Ritz Leading Ladies tipped their hats to Charlotte Gooch and Alan Burkitt, stars of the elegant musical Top Hat. BBC presenter Joanne Malin hosted the network’s celebratory 21st event and quizzed the stars about reprising roles originally made famous by Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in the 1935 film. To round off the celebrations guests tucked into a stunning Top Hat ‘birthday cake’ specially created by CakeModa baker, Michael Weston.

Fizzy Season Finale The 2014-2015 season had a fizzy finale. Champagne Laurent-Perrier’s Steve Brandwood and Tony Carter put 40 guests through their tasting paces. Revealing the fascinating history of the French family-owned luxury brand, Leading Ladies pronounced the Rose and Ultra Brut top of the tasting polls. Look out for next year’s vintage tasting and dinner event with Laurent-Perrier!

On-The-Move in Highfeld Road Our first on-the-move event was a sell-out success! Partner venues on Highfield Road, Edgbaston hosted a lifestyle afternoon giving Leading Ladies an opportunity to sample hospitality and well-being treatments. Gathering at The High Field gastro pub for a welcome drink, Leading Ladies then stepped next door to network sponsor Highfield Wellness and Beauty for a mini-treatment of choice.

Curious Incident with The Nose

The networking continued over a fabulous afternoon tea served at neighbouring destination venue, The Edgbaston hosted by Jayne O’Malley. Highlights were the ‘ice hot’ champagne jellies and exquisite vintage china.

Leading Ladies founder and former Hippodrome Trustee Fiona Alexander talked to show lead, Chris Ashby about the challenges of the role before a performance of The National Theatre’s award-winning drama The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Joining the panel were Richard Hayhow from Open Theatre Company, the Hippodrome’s Liz Leck and Hayley Hill of Irwin Mitchell who shared their experiences of working and volunteering with young people with learning disabilities. The conversation featured Hippodrome Plus film project, Nobody Nose! Certainly no one stuck their nose up in helping to support Hippodrome Plus guests raised a whopping £1,000! Thank you!

Birmingham Hippodrome Young Carers

Time to be care-free:

2015 marks the 9th year of successfully delivering a programme of work for young carers here at the theatre. Did you know there are more than 20,000 young carers living in the West Midlands with some as young as five years old? Birmingham Hippodrome’s Young Carers programme provides the young people with the chance to be care-free, meeting other young carers with similar daily challenges.

The practitioners are great - they taught us skills that we can use not just when performing but in everyday life.

Qasim, Young Carer

We welcomed over 60 young carers to a series of creative workshops this Easter, where they created their anthem ‘The Power’. Our Summer workshops saw the children working with professional drama practitioners, musicians and singers for a fun-filled week based on a specifically written story about an old toyshop and the mysterious goings on inside.

Liz Leck, Birmingham Hippodrome’s Creative Learning Manager, said:

Young Carers are young people from all different backgrounds who look after someone in their family such as an ill parent or young siblings. Spurgeon’s is a children’s charity that supports and speaks out for the UK’s most vulnerable and neglected children and young people. The work we do with Spurgeon’s helps the children to have a much-needed break and be themselves. Last year we asked the Young Carers to think about the work they do to help them recognize what amazing young people they are. Following this, they wrote and composed a song called The Power focusing on their power and strength - a celebration of what they are capable of. It is such a touching song and I hope one day it will be adopted as the national song for all Young Carers in the UK.

We were so moved by yesterday's performance. I felt honoured to be a part of that. They are all so amazing. It left me feeling so weepy. ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. Thank you for all you have done.

Trust Boost One of the Young Carers founding supporters, The Patrick Trust, has confirmed support totaling £30,000 over the next three years for this important project. They are joined by the following Trust funders: Bishop of Birmingham Trust, Baron Davenport’s Charity, Douglas Turner Trust, George Fentham Charity, Saintbury Trust, Penny Trust, The Norton Foundation and the Sainsbury’s Navigation Street Community Fund.

L-R Birmingham Hippodrome’s Creative Learning Manager Liz Leck is joined by Jilly Cosgrove, Chair of Property for Kids, Sean Jameson, Senior Support Worker at Spurgeon’s, Michelle Ward, Property for Kids Committee Member and Birmingham Hippodrome’s Development Manager Rachael Griffin.

BRENDA’s Success This year’s Young Carers received a HUGE boost thanks to the generosity of the Property for Kids Committee, who chose the project and Hippodrome Creative as a Charity of Choice at their annual awards ceremony, The BRENDAs! Former Young Carer Sean Jameson addressed a 350-strong room of property professionals as he talked from the heart about the importance of the Birmingham Hippodrome young carers programme on his self-esteem and skills development. Today, Sean is a Senior Support worker with Spurgeon’s. His passionate speech inspired the room and resulted in £17,000 being raised from the event.

Chair of Property for Kids Jilly Cosgrove said:

Birmingham Hippodrome Young Carers charity is such a worthy cause and one that we’re so pleased to be able to support.

Thank you for a lovely afternoon at the Patrons Circus Workshop. We have all had a fab day!

Creative Learning Gets Nosey

12 members of One of a Kind, our resident theatre group for young people with learning disabilities, have created a cinematic masterpiece ‘The Nose’ here at Birmingham Hippodrome this summer.

Receiving its premiere on 2 July at The Electric Cinema, ‘Nobody Nose’ is the second film to be produced by the group. Inspired by Russian novelist Gogol, ‘The Nose’ charts the story of man waking up one day without a nose! What then follows is a surreal journey to reunite the owner with his nose. In our version the nose grows to quite a size…. One of a Kind have been involved in all aspects of creation - firstly getting creative making noses of all shapes and sizes - including our giant nose - with artist Benny Semp. They then set about storyboarding and creating the film with Reel Access, which was filmed on location in Birmingham. Schools workshops also took place at Queensbury School, Hallmoor School and The Pines in Birmingham. Creative practitioners used the story of the nose to inspire paintings, stories and the making of more noses by young people - all of which were used in the eventual film. Over 80 people watched the premiere in the comfort of the UK’s oldest independent cinema with support from our good friends at The Electric.

We’re holding fundraising events with Birmingham Hippodrome and supporting Spotlight Nights. Look out for thirst-quenching events in 2015-2016 Cheers!

Richard Hayhow of Open Theatre said:

The film re-imagines this fantasy story as seen through the eyes of young people with learning disabilities.

Film Feedback What was your favourite part of the day? Watching the film and seeing the children’s reaction! What could we have done to the make the day even better? Free tissues to wipe away the tears of laughter! Please describe how you felt about the Nobody Nose film? Proud, privileged and very pleased. The project was funded through Birmingham City Council’s Next Generation, the Eveson Charitable Trust and supported by Pinsent Masons.

Thank you for inviting me to the Young Carers Performance. It was so good and great to see the young people being able to achieve so much and to enjoy themselves.
