Rick and Tina Neigel - Eagle Butte, SD Describe the Mustang: Sturgis Special Edition #1 is a 2007 Shelby GT, Performance White with Silver Stripes, 319 HP How much was the purchase? $41,000 What drew you to purchase the Mustang? This was the 1st Mustang

Rick and Nancy Schrempp Ridgeview, SD Owners of the SMR Special Edition #2 I purchased the car in 2008 at the 2nd annual SMR. It is a 2008 Shelby GT Coupe in Vista Blue; 4.6 Liter engine with a 5 speed manual transmission. I had a hard time deciding to keep it stock or add to it! I decided that I wanted to make it my own so I added some bolt-ons and kept all the original parts. Some parts included are: GT4 chrome wheels, tires are Nitto drag radials, Whipple super charger (550 hp), air to water after cooler, injectors, dual fuel pumps, air intake coolant tank, line lock, center force clutch. To put the power to the wheels, chrome radiator cover, hood struts, also a dash mount gauge cluster showing fuel pressure, boost press and oil press. The car is putting 500+ hp to the wheels. As you would guess, it is a blast to drive! The wife wishes I could find a ‘rapid acceleration warning light’ so she doesn’t get whiplash every time I decide to put the pedal to the metal!

Rally and we really had NO intention on purchasing it but decided to watch it being auctioned off. I happened to look at Rick and he motioned a few bids. I couldn’t believe it! Before I knew it, WE had purchased this beautiful Mustang! After the purchase, was there anything(s) about the Mustang you were pleasantly surprised about? It was such a surprise to find out it was an Automatic! We truly had not checked to see if it was automatic or manual (Tina does not drive anything but automatics!) It has been a very good experience because we have had the pleasure of meeting many other Mustang enthusiasts and have made life long friends. Have you done any modifications? We have not made any big modifications besides adding the SMR logo to

the driver and passenger seats, sequential tail lights, headlight splitters, and side mirror covers, exhaust, Carroll Shelby signed visor. How many Sturgis Rallies have you participated? We haven’t missed one yet and will continue to attend every year! This event is such an enjoyable time in the beautiful Black Hills. As an owner of SMR Special Edition #1 we have been treated very well by the Sturgis Mustang promoters and enjoy our special spot on Main Street during the Show ‘N Shine Event. What is your favorite car event? We both agree that the Poker Run is our favorite event. A person can never get tired of cruising through the beautiful Black Hills. Some of our favorite towns are Hill City and Deadwood. Last year, we had the privilege of parking on the cobblestone streets of Deadwood and enjoyed a nice lunch at Mustang Sally’s! Rick likes the speed aspect of the weekend by competing at the Speedway. He has even been one of the “Sweet Sixteen” a few times! We also look forward to the Loud Pipes contest in front of the Loud American! LeRoy Uhrig never disappoints! Have you taken your Mustang on any road trips or to other car shows? We continued on pg. 21

We also own two other Mustangs; a “66” coupe which we call “Wild Horses.” Named for the mural paint job that covers it. The exterior paint job is as purchased but the rest of the car has been updated. I had fun restoring the interior. The car was originally a 6 cylinder and now has a 289. I changed out the 4 bolt front and rear axle to 5 bolt from a 65 doner that I purchased for parts. I added new weld racing wheels, tires, then painted engine and engine compartment. I added power steering, and power brakes. This car is hit with the ladies and kids! We also own a 1971 Sports Coupe. I have

also done quite a bit of mechanical/interior restoration to this car. We have taken all 3 cars to numerous car shows in our area and have several awards to show for each one. We have been to every rally except the 1st and have enjoyed every one. We meet so many great people and see awesome cars that people have put their heart and soul into building. Hope to see you all at #9 in September!

1 Pistol will be auctioned and the other will be raffled

The Sturgis Mustang Rally Committee is honored in having Jesse Kaufman from Sturgis, South Dakota hand engrave this year’s Ruger Pistols. At the age of 25, Kaufman took an interest in the engraving craft when his father purchased a small duplicator and a lathe. Throughout the years, he has spent countless hours mastering checkering, inletting, duplicating and finishing wood. He eventually was hired as a stocker maker for the world renowned gun company, Dakota Arms, in Sturgis, South Dakota. With this job, Kaufman was blessed with the opportunity to travel throughout the world meeting other craftsmen and artisans who encouraged and inspired him. Each of them were willing to share techniques that would

later be beneficial to mastering his “signature work”.

Thanks, Jesse!

Kaufman is grateful in being able to make a living working with his hands. Having the opportunity to share his God given talent with appreciative clients, makes his job very rewarding.

Winner’s name will be drawn on Sunday, Sept. 6th

The

2015 Saleen 302 Black La

By Maxwell Matthewson Photography: Damir Karamujic Earlier this year, Saleen Automotive released their 2015 White and Yellow Label 302 Mustangs to much fanfare. To round out their fleet, Saleen pulled out all the stops and developed one of the best Mustangs to date. This car is set to change the way pony cars are looked at from here on out. At a one-of-a-kind event in Downtown LA, Saleen raised the curtain on the latest pony car out of their Corona, CA headquarters. “Since I started building cars in 1984 my goal has always been to go above and beyond where anybody has been before”, said Steve Saleen. “This will by far be the most refined and advanced Mustang we have built to date.” With over 30 years of experience in both racing and manufacturing vehicles, it was only a matter of time before Saleen built a Mustang as comprehensive and technologically advanced as the 2015 302 Black Label. Saleen combined the reliability and potency of the 5.0L Coyote motor with a twin-screw supercharger. The pair produces the most power from a production Mustang yet at 730 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque on 91 octane gas. “From the beginning of this project, we have always known that we wanted to create the most powerful production Mustang we have ever built”, said Sven Etzelsberger, V.P. of Engineering. “I can happily say that we have accomplished this goal with great success.” The 2015 Saleen 302 Black Label not only outperforms every competitor in engine performance, but also outshines even previous generation Saleen Mustangs in handling. This is because the chassis consists of an independent suspension on all four corners. Outfitted with Saleen S4 springs, shocks, swaybars, and bushings, this setup offers complete performance and handling for both on and off the track. A massive set of 15-inch dimpled rotors and multipiston brakes bring the car back down from hyperspeed. “A brake setup of this caliber is perfectly fit on an ultrahigh performance vehicle like the Black Label 302”, added Etzelsberger. Keeping the Black Label planted to the road are 275/35R20 tires in the front and 275/40R20 tires in the rear. These are wrapped around a set of Saleen 20 inch 5-spoke alloy wheels that are available in multiple finishes. By far the most advanced design out of Saleen, the Black Label 302 combines the legacy that Saleen is known for with unconventional design elements and materials for a truly unique vehicle inside and out, top to bottom. This allnew Saleen vehicle started with finely tuned aerodynamic body components. As always, Saleen has spent considerable time optimizing lift over drag (L/D) and this vehicle is no exception. Lengthened an inch and a half in the front and

16

almost two inches in the rear helps to increase the airfoil, thereby increasing downforce over the entire vehicle. A trademark Saleen rear wing balances the downforce created by the front air splitter. Carbon fiber body components help to lighten the overall weight of the vehicle. The interior is a mix of luxury and styling with black leather and suede seats accented in contrasting chevrons. A high contrast gauge cluster provides key vitals to the driver at a glance. Harking back to Saleen's racing heritage is a leather wrapped steering wheel with controls for audio and the center stack display between the gauges. Unique badging finishes off the interior that includes a dash plaque signifying year of manufacture and serial number of each vehicle. A full set of Saleen 302 badging and graphics will also be included to complement any one of the standard or custom Saleen paint schemes available on all Saleen vehicles. To match the beauty and refinement of such a remarkable car, Saleen has developed a new paint

coating with BASF to launch with this vehicle. California Sunset is a cross between a golden yellow and the hues of a setting sun to create a truly unique color that changes with the light. As with the rest of the Saleen lineup, the 2015 S302 Black Label will receive a Saleen serialization and unique Saleen VIN. Each car is also hand signed by Steve Saleen, ensuring it has gone through the rigorous postproduction quality control process. Also, each car comes with Saleen’s 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty. “This car pushes the boundaries of proportion, both functionally and aesthetically, while transforming the signature American pony car look into a new class of American Exotic”, explained Sean Smith, Design Director.

Tim and Tonya Anderson NE Colorado At the 6th Annual Sturgis Mustang rally we purchased a 2011 Chrome Molly 302 Black Label Saleen. This was the dice roll car that was signed by Steve and Molly Saleen. The color Chrome Molly is named after Steve’s daughter Molly.

We paid $75,000 at the auction We purchased the car because the auction was motivating and the car was presented as being #1 of 1. We were surprised after the purchase to learn the car wasn’t ready to be sold. The supercharger wasn’t installed and several other items hadn’t been addressed. We haven’t done any modifications to the car other than having Saleen put on the supercharger and tune the car. We have been to 3 Sturgis Mustang rallies, purchasing the car on our first. Our favorite car event at the Sturgis Mustang Rally is the Poker Run and the auction. There is beautiful scenery around the area and the auction usually has some neat memorabilia. We have taken our Chrome Molly Saleen to Steamboat Springs for their Rocky Mountain Mustang Rally,

to Corona, CA to have the supercharger put on, back to Sturgis the past two years to bring back the 6th year show car. We have won several awards with our Chrome Molly Saleen: 1st Place in Sturgis in 2013, Steamboat Springs 1st in Show Saleen, Fall Harvest Car Show in Fort Morgan, CO Millennium Award. We have several other Mustangs. In 1976 I bought the Charlie’s Angel Cobra II. Later my sister drove it and then it was sold to some friends of the family. We started buying mustangs again in 2008 with a 40th Anniversary KR, then a 2008 Terlingua, then 2011 45th Anniversary GT-350, 2008 Roush P-51 #40 of 151, 2012 Shelby 1000, 2013 GT500 20th SVT Anniversary, 2013 Saleen 30th Anniversary #1 of 10, 2011 Crazy Horse Speedster, 2015 50th Anniversary, 2014 Shelby Signature Series Super Snake. We like Mustangs because they are one of America’s iconic muscle cars, Carroll Shelby’s input on the cars, the horsepower of the newer cars and the retro look of the 2007.

Shelby GT350R a head turner Heads certainly turned at the 2015 NAIAS in Detroit when the new Ford Shelby GT350R broke out of the gates and took center stage to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Competition. The new Shelby is conceived from the principal beliefs of design and engineering of Carroll Shelby. The GT350R Mustang is the most raceready road legal Mustang ever. Taking advantage of today’s use of technology and thanks to significant engineering innovations and aero improvements, this pony promises to deliver never-before-seen on-track performances. In addition to typical Shelby-designed exterior components such as a carbon fiber hood with functional air vents for heat extraction and lift reduction and aero-body enhancements including an aggressive two-piece rear diffuser, the newest Shelby GT features a Ford Racing supercharger and chrome-tipped Borla exhaust system to boost the Mustang’s first ever production V8 Ford flat-plane crankshaft engine - for an output of 627 horsepower - making this the most powerful Shelby produced to this date.

20

Unlike traditional V8s, where the connecting rods are attached to the crankshaft at 90 degree intervals, this design evenly spaces all crank pins at 180 degree intervals to optimize high speed engine breathing. It is the most powerful naturally aspirate production Ford engine ever, with more than 500 horsepower and more than 400 lb.-ft of torque. Also with the package, are revised spring rates and antiroll bars, lower ride height, unique track-tuned alignment settings, revised bushing and jounce bumpers, cross axis ball joints in the front suspension and revised calibration controlling the MagneRide dampers. In addition, lightweight carbon fiber wheels are standard on the Shelby GT350R, making Ford the first major automaker to introduce this innovative wheel technology as standard equipment. The 19x11 inch front and the 19x11.5 back wheels will be shod with Michelin’s top-shelf Pilot Sport Cup 2 high-performance tires with rubber

compound and a construction unique the 350R. With this balance, this pony will provide approximately 13 pounds of unsprung weight reduction per wheel and offer higher levels of stiffness than equivalent aluminum wheels. Aside from carbon fiber wheels, larger front splitter and rear wings, Shelby GT350R features distinct details. Exterior touches include red painted brake calipers, red pin striping at the edges of the optional over-thetop racing stripes and Shelby GT350R badging. Inside is high-contrast red stitching, Shelby GT350R badging and the D-shaping steering wheel fitted with a red center mark at the top. The Shelby GT350R goes on sale in the United States and Canada later this year. There is no official pricing available as yet, but guesses have put it in the $80,000 (US Dollar) range.

Where Are They Now? Continued from page 8 attend the Gettysburg, SD Car Show annually and have gone to Rapid City, SD for the Counts Car Show, and to Pierre, SD for the Annual Dave Graves Memorial Corvette/Mustang Rally. Have you won any awards? We have placed in a few car shows but our most prized award was receiving the Kid’s Choice Award at the SMR in 2011! It meant so much to us and we were so pleased to be the recipient. Do you have/had any other Mustangs? It all started when my husband brought home the first mustang as a gift to me. It was a 1996 Black GT Convertible. This was what we drove out to the 1st SMR event. After purchasing the 2007 White Shelby GT Sturgis Special Edition #1, we were absolutely hooked on Mustangs! Since then we’ve purchased a 1968 Green Mustang Convertible along! kids have and recently purchased a 2014 Black right Roush StageOur 3 which moves also joined into the fun, our daughter has a 1966 coupe (project car) and our son bought a 2008 GT. Why do you like Ford Mustangs? When you drive a mustang, step on the gas pedal, and hear the exhaust rumble, you just can’t help but smile! Can I say FUN?? We are first of all FORD people and Mustangs are just FUN and Fast!

TEXT BY MATT STONE & MARK HOULAHAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT STONE, JERRY HEASLEY, AND KIRK GERBRACHT

Throughout the decades, Shelby American has occupied many storied locations, most of them on the west side of Los Angeles, not far from what is now Los Angeles International Airport. Some have become well known and iconic, often visited by Shelby owners and enthusiasts looking to connect the dots of Shelby’s earliest days and accomplishments. Those properties have come and gone over time, and some years ago, Carroll decided to move much of his operation to Las Vegas. The most recent Vegas operation was located some miles from downtown Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and in the shadow of Nellis Air Force Base. CSX Cobras were assembled there, as well as the Series I and all of the Mustang-based production that was reborn in 2006. It all began with one large building, and as

24

need increased, the company kept leasing more and more space in the same industrial complex. It worked, but was hardly efficient. The driveways were constantly buzzing with golf carts running technicians, company managers, dealers, guests, sponsors, and even Carroll himself back and forth from building to building to get anything done. As leases began to mature the company was able to reconfigure a bit and give up some of the space, but it was still a bit of a hodge-podge, and a long way from McCarran airport, making it less than convenient (and an expensive cab ride) for anyone to visit. A few years back, the company management team decided that a new solution was called for. So the search began for an “all in one box” location that would be more attractive, efficient, and easier to

access. The answer came in the form of a former furniture cabinet factory just a few blocks off of the famous Las Vegas Strip, with tons of parking and super easy access, just minutes from Las Vegas’s airport. The deal was made, and late last fall, Shelby American took up residence in its newest and perhaps best ever home. Rather than being glued together bit by bit, the space was master planned from the beginning to house adequate automobile assembly space, offices, a “heritage center” combining a large, elegant gift shop, Shelby Performance Parts shop, new car sales area, and a Shelby-worthy museum space for the company’s car collection - and it’s fabulous. The single story main building is around 135,000 square feet, and there’s also a 40,000-squarefoot storage facility nearby for

Here an aluminum-bodied version is coming together. Just past the vehicle sales area and before you actually enter the Heritage Center’s museum displays is something everyone should stop and just admire for a few minutes. What you are looking at here is CSX2000; the very first Cobra Carroll built back in 1962. This historic vehicle has never been restored, yet it is maintained enough to be driven in and out of events are needed. As you progress through the facility you’re funneled Rumor has it Carroll turned down $34,000,000 for the car (yes, into the Heritage Center’s vehicle display area, an everthat’s millions!). Across from CSX2000 is a huge multi-panel glass changing exhibit of new and classic iron that has had viewing area out into the main production area where you can see the honor of wearing a Shelby nameplate. There’s no Shelby American technicians doing their magic on a multitude of guarantee what you’ll see on your visit, as these vehicles vehicles - Mustangs, Raptors, Cobra roadsters, and more. are rotated through the display and used for events and some are even on loan from customers.

warehouse and other inventory. The main shop area is divided into several functions: Mustang build and conversion, with a number of lifts and OEM-style quality assurance processes; a separate Cobra build area for the continued build of CSX-numbered cars; an EPA-compliant paint and body shop, plus a chassis dyno and engine build clean rooms. While they don’t do any metal stamping or casting there, it’s otherwise a genuine car factory, and should be able to handle nearly any project the Shelby American designers conjure up. Visitors enter through the Heritage Center doors, which first takes you through a large and lavish gift shop. T-shirts, signs, mugs, photos, and all manner of aphemera are a large and important aspect of Shelby’s business, and among the main

reasons people visit any Shelby property. Rest assured it’s more than a few T-shirts hung on the wall; there are thousands of square feet of immaculate, well-organized retail space that’ll have your Visa or MasterCard smoking in no time. Just past the retail store is a compact but attractive and elegant museum space dedicated to Carroll and the cars he’s created and been involved with over the decades. During our visit, the first and original Cobra prototype CSX2000 - was on display, along with a variety of Shelby American’s earliest and most recent models. The company has now hired an official historian to assemble, display, and protect the history that made the legend. I commented to Shelby American CEO Joe Conway that I felt the new facility was very appropriate. Nice, but not too nice. Grand, but

not too grand. And functionally appropriate to what the company has become in the post-Carroll age. Conway said that what they attempted to do was create a place that was much more efficient than the old assemblage of buildings, and “right sized” for the company’s future, and of course recognizing Carroll Shelby’s legacy and accomplishments. The Shelby Heritage Center is open to the public MondaySaturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is free of charge. Free tours of the Heritage Center and build facility are given MondayFriday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. only.

Comedy Hypnotist to perform on Friday

Comedy Hypnotist Bruce Black has been performing for 28 years. He will share those years of experience with a hilarious comedy hypnosis show at the Mustang Rally on September 4 at 7:30 PM at the ThunderDome in Sturgis. Mr. Black’s Comedy Hypnosis Show is called “Destination Imagination”. Through the magic of hypnosis, several members from the audience will believe they are taking a trip to Hollywood, California where they will meet and talk to their favorite music and movie stars. They will

also drive their favorite Mustang and have a funny encounters with other cars along the way. The evening will begin with Mr. Black strolling around the audience performing world-class close up magic. He does this as an icebreaker and to look for potential volunteers. The people on stage must volunteer because no one can be forced under hypnosis against their will. The show begins with an explanation of what hypnosis is and more importantly, what it is not. Mr. Black dispels the Hollywood myths behind hypnosis. To show the audience the power of the mind, he will do a group exercise with everyone in the audience. These are called waking suggestions and happen without actually hypnotizing anyone. He will show them how the eyes can fool the brain,

28

how the power of suggestion can make them taste things that are not there, magnetize their fingers, feel things that are not there and make their arms rise and fall simply by the power of words and imagination. Next, a group of people are invited on stage to undergo hypnosis. Under hypnosis, the volunteers will actually believe they are in Hollywood in a casting call with their favorite actor or actress! The audience will be howling with laughter as the volunteers believe their favorite star is calling them and they answer the phone. The phone call will come from their own shoe! In a typical show, a few of the volunteers will even forget their names and be unable to remember what comes after the number five. A few will speak in Martian and some of them will also audition for a musical by playing air guitar. At the end of the program everyone will become professional dancers and will per-

form a number of famous dances. Much of what people know about hypnosis is through inaccurate portrayals in TV and movies. Hypnosis is not really sleep, but an altered state of consciousness. Volunteers follow to the power of suggestion but they are still in control through their subconscious. A person’s subconscious will not allow them to do something they don’t want to do. No one will reveal intimate secrets. A person cannot be hypnotized against their will nor can someone get stuck in hypnosis. Mr. Black was trained in hypnosis by the legendary Ormond McGill, the man who actually invented comedy stage hypnosis in the 1930s. He was in his 90s when he took Mr. Black under his wing and trained him at the Riviera Casino in Las Vegas. For information on Mr. Black’s show, visit www.ColoradoHypnotist.com See you on September 4th!
