ELCOME to the November 2016 issue of the Rutland and Market Harborough Living. This is my third issue as Editor – and what a three months it’s been. It goes without saying that I’m a big fan of our beautiful, thriving patch in middle England – I’m in the wrong job if that wasn’t the case – but since starting the role, I’ve been blown away by just how much there is going on, right on our own turf. How lucky we are. When I think of November, I think of Remembrance Sunday and the iconic poppy. You’ll notice this as a running theme throughout this edition, which includes an overview of the commemorative events taking place throughout the centenary of the First World War and a look into the astounding support The Royal British Legion provides to service men and women and their families. We also showcase a fabulous local initiative, Rutland Remembers, which is tirelessly uncovering and telling the stories of local men and women who lost their lives for their country. So, while we often think of Christmas as a time to be thankful, let’s start early and give thanks to all those who lost their lives as well as those who fought, and continue to fight, for this green and pleasant land. And don’t forget to buy your poppy!

New exhibition at Uppingham’s Rug Studio T

HIS November The Rug Studio are holding their first of many planned inhouse exhibitions in over three years. This season they are focusing on Antique and decorative Indian Agra carpets, as first inspired by the Jailbirds exhibition and catalogue London March 1987. The Quality of the Agra stocked have been quoted by ‘Hali’ magazine as “leaders in the field” and by the late David Black, a world renowned and respected Notting Hill Dealer as “best on the market”. Rug Studio owner Rachel says, “Decorative does not necessarily mean heavily floral, a good rug flows in elegance. Here in Uppingham for two weeks from 12–26th November, we would like to give you the opportunity to see and learn our passion.” Aware that not everyone wants an antique rug due to traffic and budget requirements, they will also have a stock of Indian Amritsar carpets and of the popular reproduction Afghan Zieglar rugs.

This is alongside their usual stock of Indian, Afghan, Persian and Caucasian contemporary and antique rugs, carpets kilims and textiles. Rachel says, “We believe at The Rug Studio in sharing our passion, expertise and knowledge to help the public choose wisely their new rug, carpet, kilim or textile. A rug is more than a floor covering, it should evoke an emotion, draw everything in the room together and sit as comfortably as a bunch of flowers.” With over 22 years’ handson experience, Rachel is a trained weaver and restorer who will happily provide ideas. If you have your own damaged rugs, kilims or textiles, take them along for a consultation regarding cleaning, restoring and upcycling an old treasure. Rachel will share a wealth of knowledge as to the history of design, clarify its age and value where possible. • The Rug Studio, 2 High St E, Uppingham, Oakham LE15 9PZ. Tel: 01572 829927

New Alan Oliver exhibition in Oakham

A

NEW exhibition of Alan Oliver’s paintings starts at The Old House Gallery in Oakham’s Market Place on 29 October. The show is titled ‘Always looking forward’. Alan has been painting mainly Rutland images for half a century. Over that time, he has been developing new techniques and methods of depicting the scenes and objects that have caught his imagination. This new show illustrates this development with a collection of work, old and new. Alan will be demonstrating some of his painting methods in the gallery on the opening day from 2 to 4pm and again on the following Saturday 5 November from 11am to 12pm.

Rutland Remembers More than 500 men and three women from Rutland lost their lives in the First World War. A small group of Rutland-based volunteers are determined to commemorate their memory and recently set about updating the existing information. Two years on, Rutland Remembers is a fascinating and absorbing social engagement website lovingly researched and developed predominantly by Jim Buchanan, his wife Claire, Robert Pickwoad and John Stokes. Amander Meade finds out more about this local labour of love. What inspired the website? We were inspired by a book published in 1920 called ‘Rutland and the Great War’ by George Phillips (now republished and available in Rutland County Museum). It contains the biographies of more than 500 men from Rutland who died in the First World War. We thought we’d update the biographies using original sources and make them available online together with photographs of their graves and memorials and maps showing where they are commemorated. The project took off from there and, having secured lottery funding to create a bespoke website, we were away.

“We want to remember with pride those from this county who gave their lives and to tell their stories to a new generation” We work with web designers 23ccc and discovered that Matt Steele, one of the designers working on the website, is the great nephew of one of those who died so the project became very personal to him as well. Since our launch in 2014, we have had more than 1,000 contributions to the site, many from relatives of those who died, offering new details, photographs and documents, which has been wonderful. You have set yourselves a challenge to visit every grave and memorial to the fallen Rutlanders by the end of 2018 – how is that progressing? So far, with the support of site users, soldiers’ graves and memorials have been visited in France, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, India, and Iran. We have a

6

6.indd 1

major challenge when it comes to graves in Iraq although we have not given up hope on making visits to them as well. What can readers do to help? We would love readers to visit the graves, record their visits on the site, and post pictures of themselves touring the battlefields. We also want to hear from as many relatives as possible in order to fill in gaps in the stories and supply new photographs. Is there a story that stands out for you? There are so many. But Hugh Steele from Exton is someone who had been forgotten until our website came along. He is not mentioned in ‘Rutland and the Great War’ and is not on his village war memorial. Yet he was one of three brothers who fought, and was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. We only heard about him when a relative contacted us through the site. Hugh is just one of a number of Rutland soldiers who otherwise are not remembered anywhere. Another is John Woodward (known as Tom) who was living in Caldecott before the First World War. He had his wristwatch shot off; he carried his wounded colonel to safety, was twice torpedoed while returning injured to England and was finally killed by a German shell on the Somme. To commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, we have added an interactive map to the website showing where each soldier who died on the Somme actually fell and this section also highlights many fascinating personal stories. What would you like to achieve through the project? Primarily to remember with pride those from

this county who gave their lives but secondly and equally importantly, to tell their stories to a new generation and for children to take an interest in the names on their local war memorial. A hundred years after the war began, their names still stand out as a reminder of their sacrifice. This website is dedicated to each and every one of them. • Visit the website or contact the team with information at www.rutlandremembers.org

Ten Years of the Rutland Christmas Carol Concert in support of the NSPCC Next month’s Christmas carol concert will mark the 10th anniversary of this popular and hugely successful fundraising event. Margaret Wheeler tells Amander Meade about this very special evening.

Celebrity guests…

Anxious to avoid clashing with traditional services in local churches, Margaret devised a programme that would celebrate the season with secular readings sourced from classical literature and humorous authors, alongside musical performances by the internationally renowned Harborough Singers and the acclaimed Foresters Brass Band. “My idea was to invite high profile local personalities to read at the concert and we are delighted that most of the readers from that first year are still keen to read, coming back year after year to support us. Lars Thorp, Rosemary Conley, Peter Wheeler, Nigel Colbourn, Anne Davies and Tim Hart have all been regular contributors, with appearances over the years from other celebrities such as Mary Berry, Julia Bradbury and actors Chris Villiers and Chris Chittel. We are thrilled that Mary Berry will be joining us again this year.

OR a decade the start of the festive season in Rutland has been eagerly anticipated and heralded by the joyous carol concert held at All Saint’s Church in support of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). The event is made possible by the generous support of sponsors and many local businesses in Rutland and a willing team of volunteers, including Margaret Wheeler, who originated the idea for the concert. When Margaret arrived in Rutland with her husband, former England international rugby player Peter and their young family, she was asked along to support an annual ladies luncheon that had been the main fundraising event locally for the NSPCC for several years. “For a number of reasons it was felt to be the right time for a new kind of event and as I had experience of organising large carol concerts at Leicester cathedral, I suggested something similar for Rutland and the idea went down well,” explains Margaret.

are the NSPCC’s largest donor from a single event in the East Midlands by far and I always endeavour to keep abreast of how the money is spent. There are many children regionally and nationally helped by the crucial work of the NSPCC and sadly, always new children to protect and different challenges to face.” Margaret has recently been awarded Community Volunteer of the Year by the charity – something which she is at pains to point out she accepted on behalf of the entire team behind the concert. “I am not any kind of campaigner – just a mum whose children happen to have had a very happy childhood. Other children are not so fortunate and the concert is our way of making a difference.” • This year’s concert takes place on Thursday 1 December, 7pm for a 7.30pm start at All Saint’s Church, Oakham. Tickets are on sale for £15 each at Don Paddy’s in Uppingham or at James Sellick’s in Oakham. Priority tickets are available by joining the mailing list – to do so contact Margaret by telephone on Tel: 01572 813626. Margaret Wheeler

A record-breaking year…

The first concert was a triumph with £15,000 raised and the total increasing year on year ever since to a magnificent £25,000 in 2015. The nine sell-out concerts so far have accumulated over £150,000 and the team are hoping to make their anniversary year a record breaker. “We are completely indebted to sponsors like Robert Wills of Don Paddy’s who has been on board from day one, as well as Rutlanders who turn out in their hundreds to attend and are so generous with the retiring collection. Live on How every remembrance poppy sold is making a difference

F

OUNDED by veterans after the First World War, The Royal British Legion is still helping today’s Service men and women, veterans, and their families in almost every aspect of daily life. Katie Mitchell takes a look at how, a century after the start of WW1, the charity is safeguarding the memory of those who have given their lives for our freedom and providing lifelong support for the Armed Forces community.

The iconic poppy

For many people, the image that springs to mind when they hear ‘The Royal British Legion’ is the iconic poppy, distributed during the Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal in late October and early November. But as Leicestershire and Rutland Community Fundraiser Giles Coleman is keen to highlight, “our position as the nation’s custodian of Remembrance is important – but our work doesn’t stop there. Our focus is as much on the here and now, working to improve the lives of veterans, serving members of the Armed Forces and their families in every way imaginable.”

The here and now

The breadth of the Legion’s work and impact is impressive, here is just a snapshot of how they are making a very real difference: Personnel Recovery centres are assisting wounded, injured and sick Service personnel to recover and either return to duty or move successfully into civilian life. The initiative is delivered in partnership with The Royal British Legion and with support from other Service charities and organisations. However the Legion also has its own established and fully funded recovery centre in Shropshire – The Battle Back Centre. This runs multiactivity courses to promote self-confidence and improve motivation to aid recovery, with tailored programmes to help with both physical and psychological challenges.

“Adjusting to civilian life after a career in the Armed Forces can be very difficult and finding a job can be one of the hardest parts of leaving Service. We are helping veterans, and their families, find work on ‘civvy street’.” The Legion is helping beneficiaries live independently and with dignity, whether that’s in their own home or in one of the charities care homes. It’s working with Dementia UK to provide Admiral Nurses, a service that supports the carers of its beneficiaries who have dementia, whilst the charity also has six care homes to provide short and long term care

for serving and ex-Service people and their dependents. The Legion also provides support for those in need of home adaptations and funding for new equipment, while its ‘Handy Vans’ service is providing a dedicated and trusted team trained to carry out small home repairs. The Legion is helping Service leavers find employment and also provides advice and guidance to partners and dependents of serving personnel. It also offers specialist compensation advice, help with debt and emergency situations, and support to beneficiaries through grants and loans, helping to ease the burden of financial pressure for thousands of Service and ex-Service people every year. The charity offers holidays to those that need it most, whether it’s because they haven’t had a holiday in years, have been struggling with a recent bereavement, or are juggling family and Armed Forces commitments. With four permanent locations around the UK where

members of the Armed Forces community take a break, they provide a relaxing environment where everything’s taken care of. Although the Legion directly helps thousands of beneficiaries every year, they also provide funds to other organisations, manage trusts and scholarship funds and help the wider Armed Forces community in many ways. Initiatives include arts-led projects such as recovery through theatre and employment training and family support services. • To learn more about The Royal British Legion, take part in a fundraising event or volunteer, visit www.royalbritishlegion.org. uk or if you need help, call their Contact Centre helpline on 0808 802 8080.

You can make a donation by visiting the website, calling 0845 845 1945 or donate £10 by texting POPPY to 70111 (Cost £10 plus standard network charges (typically £9.92 goes to the Poppy Appeal).

Great Food Club Christmas gift ideas Locally produced food and drink make great festive pressies. Here are a few ideas from the Great Food Club network… WORDS: MATT WRIGHT

Helen Buff Handmade Chocolates

Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin

An afternoon spent with a neighbour who worked in the chocolate industry led to Helen Buff of Market Overton, Rutland, setting up her own chocolate business. She hand-makes all her chocolates using quality moulds and Callebaut chocolate – the brand used by many master chocolate makers and pastry chefs. As well as plain, dark, milk and white, she uses coloured and flavoured chocolate including strawberry, lemon, honey and caramel. Lustre powders can be added, as well as edible cocoa butters for logos and pictures – ideal for festive gifts. Helen prides herself on her versatility, making virtually any chocolate object you want. She supplies chocolate horseshoes to Oakham Castle and museum gift shops, chocolate bars to local shops and has made hearts, crickets bats, owls, handbags and gift boxes. We particularly like the chocolate sprouts! Helen has a vast range of moulds already and will endeavour to make anything you want. What’s more, Great Food Club members get a free 75g bag of handmade buttons with every order over £5. Just mention you are a member when ordering. www.facebook.com/RutlandChocolates

Andy Hoyle’s Sloeberry Spirits is located next to Northfield Farm Shop on Northfield Farm in Cold Overton, Leicestershire, but is a separate business. Andy produces exquisite bottles of fruity spirits that make perfect Christmas gifts, including flagship product Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin, plus Whisky & Wild Damson, Vodka & Blackberry and Gin & Raspberry. Of these, two drinks – the Melton Sloe Gin and the Gin & Raspberry – have won Gold Stars in the UK Great Taste Awards. Andy says: “We take the finest spirits, add farm hedgerow fruits and leave them to infuse naturally for several months. No additives are needed and much of the fruit we hand-pick ourselves from hedgerows in and near Melton Mowbray.” The slender, tall bottles of Sloeberry Spirits make brilliant gifts. The Melton Mowbray Sloe Gin (one GTA Gold Star in 2013) is a classic winter tipple and the Gin & Raspberry (two GTA Gold Stars in 2014) is also a fabulous combination. Great Food Club members can get 10% off all online orders of Sloeberry Spirits using the promotional code GF2014. www.sloeberryspirits.co.uk

The Pickled Shop

Bat & Bottle

The Pickled Village produces a large, inventive and enticing range of chutneys, pickles and jams, all prepared in the traditional way in small batches. And now they’ve set up the online Pickled Shop too so you can order their lavish goodie boxes for next day delivery. There are eight differently themed boxes, each available in small, medium and large, and they don’t just include preserves – expect cheese, gin, chocolate, biscuits and more. The Pickled Village was founded by Camille Ortega McLean in 2008 and the brand’s home is the thatched village shop in the rural idyll of Bulwick, Northamptonshire. The shop is beautiful and well worth a visit, stocking a range of hand-picked fine foods, hampers, as well as Pickled Village products. Says Camille: “Pickled Village recipes derive from the four corners of the world but all have a local flavour, whether from locally sourced natural ingredients or from adding a traditional English twist to an exotic recipe.” Favourites include ‘Morning After Marmalade’, ‘The Intoxicating One’, ‘The Amorous Breakfast, fiery ‘Peps’ and ‘The Red Rapscallion’ www.thepickledshop.com

Bat and Bottle of Oakham is a small but sassy business that specialises in importing wine from Italy. If you want to seriously impress a wine lover in your life this Christmas then look no further. Don’t expect to see Bat and Bottle wines on the supermarket shelves – Ben and Emma Robson, co-founders, have spent over 20 years seeking out artisan producers, smallscale wineries, oddities and surprises, to offer truly individual wines. Ben says: “Our policy is to find customers for our wines rather than

wines for our customers. The result is a very personal wine selection, a genuine reflection of our tastes.” Emma and Ben founded Bat and Bottle in 1994 as a ‘van and kitchen table’ operation and originally sold cricket bats alongside the interesting wines. The cricket side came and went but the passion for wine remains. A subscription to Bat & Bottle’s Wine Club would make a brilliant Christmas present. www.batwine.uk

Booze & sweets! Ben and Sean from The Olive Branch in Clipsham share a few favourite winter drinks and two petit fours recipes…

I

F The Olive Branch’s Bacon Bourbon cocktail isn’t your cup of tea, maybe a few of the drinks on this page will do the trick this winter. When entertaining this winter, why not serve guests a few drinks that stand out from the crowd? At The Olive Branch we’ve been searching for enticing, interesting winter bevvies and have found some real beauties. Also, why not have a go at making your own petit fours? It’s great fun and probably much simpler than you think. Here are the drinks that are doing it for us this winter, plus a couple of recipes. Akashi-Tai Shiraume Ginjo Umeshu – plum sake This is a revelation – a sweet sake made with the best rice wine, and plums that have been macerated for six months. The liquid is then matured for a further two years and has a wonderful taste of plums, almonds and marzipan.

revive King Edward VII during morning rides in his new horseless carriage – a Daimler. It is delicious as a pick-me-up on its own or with ice, or topped up with Champagne or Prosecco. You can add a dash when making ginger cake, ginger cheesecake or ginger truffles. Quinta do Portal Moscatel Reserva – a dessert wine This deliciously rich pudding wine is made from muscatel grapes and aged in old port barrels for four years. It’s a wonderfully elegant and complex dessert wine. Adoro Natural Sweet Mouvedre – a cheese-course wine A naturally sweet red from Swartland in South Africa that’s made specially to go with cheese. Swartland is an area known for intense heat, which enables grapes to get beautifully sugary and ripe, resulting in rich, full-bodied wines.

Mouchao Vinho Licoroso – a Portuguese winter liqueur After the addition of high quality ‘eau de vie’ (a clear, colorless fruit brandy), this fortified wine is aged in oak barrels for at least four years. Prunes and spices come to mind alongside a smoky finish. It is absolutely delicious. The King’s Ginger – a spicy pick-me-up Rich and zesty, this liqueur was created to

Seedlip non-alcoholic spirits – distilled but alcohol free These ‘spirits’ are distilled in the same way as gin, but without the alcohol. There are currently two in the range. One is perfect for winter with all-spice, cardamom, oak, lemon and grapefruit. The other has lighter flavours of pea, hay, rosemary and thyme.

Maury Solera 1928 cask 765, Rousillion, France – the perfect festive wine “One of the best-value French wines available anywhere,” according to wine critic Jancis Robinson. This is perfect with chocolate, dried fruits and cheese, so ideal for Christmas. It has a nutty, figgy, rich creaminess balanced with an almost sherry-like subtle salt-dry finish.

And here are two petit fours recipes to serve with the drinks… Quince fruit pastilles

British quinces are in season from October to December

250g quince purée 125g caster sugar 50g glucose syrup 12g pectin Juice 1 lemon 2 leaves gelatin – pre-soaked in cold water 40g citric acid (optional – to add a little sharpness)

1. Grease and line a baking tray with cling film. 2. Combine sugar and pectin and mix well. Then add the quince and glucose. Heat on medium until sugar dissolves and mixture reaches 108°C. 3. Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice and gelatin mixture, until gelatin has melted through. 4. Pour mixture onto the lined tray and chill to set. 5. When set, turn out onto a cutting board and cut into 2cm cubes. 6. Roll the cubes of fruit pastille in the citric acid and caster sugar, then serve.

Vanilla and white chocolate fudge 1 vanilla pod 450g caster sugar 250ml double cream 125ml milk 50g white chocolate 50g salted butter 1. Stir all ingredients together and over a medium heat bring to 118°C. 2. Take off heat and beat in a mixing bowl until mixture cools and comes together. 3. Put into a tray, allow to set, then portion into 2cm diameter balls. 4. Lightly roll in icing sugar and serve. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2016

Grandma’s secret recipe Sunday 20 November is ‘Stir-up Sunday’ so it’s time to don your apron and get the family together to make the Christmas pudding, says Rachael Bull

S

TIR-Up Sunday is a tradition harking back to Victorian times in which each family member would stir the pudding while making a wish. Adding coins to the pudding was said to bring good luck if you found them in your serving on Christmas Day – watch out for cracked teeth and perhaps give the coins a clean first. Not a fan of Christmas pudding? Many aren’t. But my dear Grandma, Joan Brown, always made the most delicious Christmas puddings that converted even the most avid of Christmas pudding haters. It’s been passed down the family and now my lovely Mum, Tish, continues the Stir-up Sunday tradition with grandchildren in tow, just as we did as kids. So here’s Grandma’s ‘secret’ Christmas pud recipe, which is no longer a secret given that our readership is 14,500 strong! I’m sure she wouldn’t mind…

Grandma’s ‘secret’ Christmas Pudding By Joan Brown

3 oz currants 3 oz sultanas 6 oz raisins 2 oz mixed peel 2 oz plain flour 4 oz fresh bread crumbs 4 oz soft brown sugar 4 oz suet 1/2 tsp mixed spice 1 oz ground almonds Rind and juice of 1 lemon 2 or 3 eggs 1/4 pint rum, brandy, beer or Guinness [blimey, Grandma – 1/4 pint of brandy?!] Grated apple (optional)

• Mix together all of the dry ingredients • Add the eggs, lemon juice, rum, brandy, beer or Guinness and grated apple • Take it in turns to stir well and make a wish • Leave for a few hours before putting in a bowl (one large or two small) • Keep in the fridge and then steam for six to eight hours on Christmas Day. Remember to save a space on the hob!

HETHER you are cooking for a large group this Christmas or preparing something smaller, you might be feeling the pressure of living up to the mighty expectations the season brings with it. Take a deep breath, refuse to buckle under the stress and make life easier with a little help from the region’s fabulous suppliers and caterers. TIP: Plan early and buy the best key ingredients. Use local suppliers to make sure you get exactly what you need.

Happy birds

When it comes to choosing a bird for your Christmas table, Nick Ball and Jacob Sykes suggest quality over quantity every time. The pair run Fosse Meadows and specialise in award-winning slow-grown chickens, cockerels, geese and bronze turkeys which free-range in small flocks on their open pasture fields in south Leicestershire. “Our birds are grown much slower than most,” says Jacob. “Our dry-plucked, free-range bronze turkeys are slow-grown to full maturity – at least twice as long as the free-range turkeys sold at supermarkets for Christmas, which means they are fitter and have larger, stronger legs. They’re also dry-hung like game for ten days, which produces a wonderfully rich flavour.” The chicken, cockerels and geese are all produced to the same

26

traditional slow grown and free-range standards as the seasonal turkeys. As Nick says, “happy birds are tasty birds.” You don’t have to take Nick’s word for it – in 2011 The Independent newspaper published an article saying that their birds were the tastiest reared in Britain and last year Fosse Meadows was named Best Small Meat Producer by Good Housekeeping magazine. See for yourself - on Sunday 20 November Fosse Meadows will be throwing open the farm gate to invite you to a festive farm visit where you can learn more about slow farming and place an order for a bird.

A fresh alternative

Hambleton Farm can be found on the edge of Rutland Water and the meat available at their four shops, if not their own, is sourced according to stringent standards. “We source all our beef, lamb, pork, poultry and game from only a small select group of farmers and suppliers whom all go through our strict approval process. We believe in buying British and the closer to home, the better.” Extra special and a wonderful alternative to poultry for Christmas is their 28-day matured beef, which is dry aged on the bone before the Hambleton butchers trim and cut the joints to ensure maximum tenderness. Pork is either outdoor reared or free range with traditional breeds recommended for flavour.

Feeding a crowd…

In the days before or after the main event, a buffet is always a popular option for mixed groups of guests and, if planned carefully, a reasonable amount of food can go a very long way. Charcuterie and cheese boards supplemented with seasonal salads, imaginative accompaniments and good bread always go down well. Try Otters Smokehouse and Deli where Leo and his team will offer advice on their magnificent range of naturally oak smoked products, alongside both continental and European cheese and meat which is supported by a vast range of deli goods. The Rutland Charcuterie specialises in salamis and air-dried meats and will deliver free on orders over £50. Both firms will supply unlimited advice on item selection and what kind of quantity to allow per person to help you budget efficiently. TIP: Professional caterers will scale their offering up or down to suit the size of your event

Home help

When time is tight and you have perhaps bitten off more than you can chew in terms of hospitality, the answer is to turn to the professionals. Employing a caterer to supply the food for a dinner party means you can take a step back and enjoy the company of your guests – a welcome

relief during the Christmas rush. James Ball of Zest Catering sums it up when he says “With someone to do all the shopping, preparation, cooking, serving and clearing, you really can be the ‘host with the most’. Alternatively, mix and match professional skills with your own; canapes and puddings can be fiddly so order them in whilst providing the main course yourself to take the pressure off. The Rutland Gourmet, Sara McAllister and Wistow Outside Catering are three local companies who all provide first-class advice, a wonderful range of menus and a tailored approach to drinks and dinner parties of all sizes and to suit all budgets. TIP: Save hours of time by sourcing the best finishing touches, created by experts

Delightful details

Every year many of us have the best intentions of creating a homebaked, hand-crafted Christmas paradise but the reality can be an exhausting attempt at pleasing all of the people all of the time. This year, decide to leave the hours of stirring and slaving over a hot stove to those who win awards for it and select some treats from Hambleton Bakery to provide the finishing touches to your table. Beautiful baked goods include their time-honoured Christmas puddings, pies and iced fruit cake all hand-made using traditional recipes. Use the time saved to enjoy the company of friends and family and make sure you do it ‘guilt free’. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2016

A perfect pub lunch at The Exeter Arms in Barrowden WORDS: RACHAEL BULL

S

ITTING proud at the head of Barrowden’s quintessential village green with stunning views of the pond and fields beyond, The Exeter Arms is the perfect spot for a pub lunch. And inside doesn’t disappoint either… since opening in April, husband and wife landlords Tom and Joanne Wade have managed to create one of those family-run pubs that you walk into and immediately feel very welcome and cosy, like a home from home. We were intrigued by our starter of halloumi and carrot fritters with a tomato salsa, but on arrival they were an absolute dream, perfectly fragrant with cumin and fresh coriander. I followed with the hearty fish pie, which oozed with a bubbly roof of melted cheddar and mash. Packed full of smoked salmon, haddock and trout enveloped in a parsley cream sauce, no wonder it’s one of chef Fred’s most popular dishes. And young Fred is quite the chef. Tracy raved about her Mediterranean vegetable and mozzarella filo tart – one to try whether you’re a veggie or not – and it’s clear from the way his food is presented that Fred is a stickler for perfection. That and everything being freshly prepared and locally sourced. Their bread is from Kingscliffe Bakery, while one of the villagers catches the trout to be used the same day. It’s the entire ethos of the whole pub, as Joanne explains: “It’s a real priority for us to support local – we even get some of our herbs and vegetables from the villagers’ gardens and allotments.”

It’s been a real community effort from the start, with villagers offering their time free-of-charge to help get ready for the re-opening in April. And the Wade family haven’t looked back since, their sights firmly fixed on their New Year’s Eve five-course gala and the various quiz nights, music nights and senior offers they’ve introduced. Six months on from opening its doors, it’s clear that The Exeter Arms is already a firm favourite with villagers and visitors alike. Most definitely worth a visit. • 28 Main Street, Barrowden, LE15 8EQ Tel: 01572 747365 www.exeterarmsbarrowden.co.uk

Book early to enjoy The Wheatsheaf in Greetham WORDS: AMANDER MEADE

I

T’S rare for a pub or restaurant to be invited to join the prestigious list of establishments taking part in Rutland’s annual ‘Lunch for even Less’ event, but last year the team at the Wheatsheaf in Greetham joined The Olive Branch, Hambleton Hall and six others offering a specially priced menu between January and March. Chef Carol Craddock and her husband Scott, who manages the front of house, met at college in Leicester before spending fifteen years in London where Carol honed her skills in some of the most illustrious restaurants in London. In 2008 the couple returned to take up the reins at The Wheatsheaf and have successfully created that rarest of creatures – the proper village pub. A roaring fire in the bar made sure of the warmest welcome when I visited recently and my lunch companion who is lucky enough to live in Greetham, informed me that the pub is now so popular with residents and visitors alike that in order to secure a table on a Saturday night, at least a couple of weeks’ notice is required. The menu changes frequently as Carol only uses seasonal ingredients, sourced

locally wherever possible. Cleverly, the pub offers a selection of lighter dishes all very reasonably priced well under £10 and which double up as either a starter or a single course lunch if you are looking for a quick bite. Tracy and I shared a deliciously runny, warm Camembert served with Carol’s bread, which is baked freshly each day. A regular patron Tracy chose her favourite Hot Open Chicken Sandwich, which is served with freshly made mayonnaise, baby leaves and chips (£8.50). I can thoroughly recommend the Pan Fried Whole Tiger Prawns that were cooked to perfection with their shells on, smothered in a garlic, parsley and lemon dressing and served with wilted spinach plus a portion of homemade chips (£16.50). The Norfolk Apple Treacle Tart with clotted cream (£5.75) was exquisite with plenty of lemon zestiness, which I love. The portions are generous and the quality is superb so at these kinds of prices, there’s no need to wait for January’s offer to lunch for less. • The Wheatsheaf, 1, Stretton Road, Greetham, Rutland. Vibrant village shopping at The Manor Amander Meade discovers the perfect place to source gorgeous gifts, unusual homewares, design workshops, wellbeing classes and much, much more.

NSPIRED by Jenny Stanhope’s idea to convert her farm buildings into retail units and offices and set around the idyllic courtyard of The Manor at Tur Langton, you’ll find a thriving cluster of independent businesses providing a haven for those a little tired of homogenised high street offerings. Louise Jopling hopes her shop Tactile will become a creative hub for those who love to knit, sew, crochet and embroider. Named to encourage visitors to touch, Louise stocks textiles, yarn and wool in all kinds of unusual varieties including embroidery silks as well as beautiful throws, linens, cushions and blankets sourced from Turkey, India, Ireland and Scotland. “I really look forward to welcoming browsers and one of my best selling ranges so far has been the notions by Merchant & Mills, which dressmakers will love.” Also rather special are the handcrafted range of men’s shoes by Govan Originals that are now available to try on at Tactile. Look out for a range of workshops in 2017 too. Open seven days a week, Bunny and Clarke display a beautiful selection of home accessories, gifts and artwork by local artists across two floors in a spacious barn conversion. It’s a superb browsing spot where you can discover unique gift ideas, home accessories, beautiful everyday ladies’ clothing collections, jewellery and accessories. The same team has recently opened Mint & Ginger Coffee House, described as “a wonderful place to meet and eat” supplying delicious freshly homemade breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas – the perfect post shopping

Beautiful homewares at Bunny and Clarke place to relax and refresh. Throughout the winter, try the Homework Hour from 3.30pm to 4.30pm daily with a milkshake or hot chocolate, piece of homemade tray bake and a fruit bowl for £3.95 per child and a free cup of tea or coffee for parents – lovely idea. Sisters Lottie Court and Holly Brown are the professional experts behind Manor Hair and Beauty, their recently expanded salon. Taking a chance on a rural location, the decision has proved a winner for the business explains Lottie: “Customers love the easy parking, the relaxed atmosphere and the gorgeous views, as well as the fact that they can leave, make up free after a facial and not risk bumping into half their friends.” The team offers a full range of beauty treatments including Lycon waxing, Botox and fillers plus a complete hairdressing menu, all very reasonably priced. Stephanie Smith runs Equilesse Pilates Studio, where she supervises group classes and creates tailormade sessions for individuals or duos at her purpose-built studio. Stephanie was the first Body Control trained instructor in Leicestershire and her small, highly individual classes are pre-booked on a termly basis. “I teach beginners, intermediate and advanced pupils as well as ladies wanting to focus on ante- and post-natal work or those seeking support following surgery or injury.” Within the airy converted barn there is plenty of room for mat work, using the Reformer and Tower equipment and a separate room for one to one sessions. “Pilates is well worth a try if you are seeking improvement in posture, energy, core strength and flexibility – you can become long and lean at any age,” declares Stephanie.

Leicestershire girls Kelle Garner and Hayley Reynolds both travelled the world as professional actors and dancers before returning to the area to develop their performing arts brand Lemon Jelly. With over 1,000 pupils on their books now at classes based in London, Hertfordshire and Leicestershire, local children can benefit from professional tuition. Classes are held at several local venues dedicated to music, dance and drama. “We offer something a little different after school, during holidays and at weekends,” says Kelle, “Classes are aimed at tots as young as three right through to teenagers. All Lemon Jelly classes are taught by professionals in the performing industry. All of our teachers have either been to an accredited theatre school and/or had extensive experience in television, theatre, film and radio. No two weeks are the same and we offer training towards LAMDA exams as well as musical theatre, street dance, singing and lots more. It is important for Mint and Ginger Coffee House

children to have fun whilst they learn and all of our classes are tailored around the fun element of performing arts.” Recently launched at The Manor by Sian Stanhope-Faiers is The Native Experience, based around hand-painted Aztec style Indian tepees. Sian’s Woo Woo! Parties aim to create cultural outdoor experiences for families looking for a party with a difference. Wigwam tea parties are held in a large teepee, with optional extras such as face

painting, bouncy castle, sand pit, feather hair extensions, bunny petting and fancy dress. “This is a ‘build your own party’ format which can start just with the hire of the site and teepees or we can mix and match the fun for a completely bespoke experience,” says Sian. And why let the children have all the fun? Look out for Sian’s Teepee Village coming soon and ideal for grown up parties, yoga weekends, weddings and glamping in 2017.

HOUSE MARKET UPDATE FROM MOORES 2016 has been one of the most exhilarating and successful years to date for Moores – the region’s premier estate agency.

W

ith over twenty five years’ experience and a reputation for scrupulous customer service, it’s no surprise that Moores are selected by most local property vendors as well as being firmly established as the preferred local agency for London buyers. From Vernon Moore: All of the Moores offices which cover the region are reporting a significant uplift in the market. This in the majority of cases is due to buyers who have been uncertain of how much the referendum was going to effect the housing market now taking the view that they just need to get on with things and carry on with life as normal. This has seen a flurry of activity across the board this Autumn.

COUNTRY HOMES New Director Moving into the final quarter of the year, Managing Director Vernon Moore has another exciting announcement to make. “We are delighted that David Kirkup has joined the team as a director of the Country and Equestrian sector of our business. David’s appointment is a direct result of the continued demand for homes in the region from buyers in London and the South East and his considerable experience in both the local and London property markets make him ideally placed to empathise with our London client base.” Having grown up in the region David has an extensive knowledge of the area and all it has to offer as well as having recently rejected the commuter lifestyle himself and returned to the region to live.

“I am looking forward to sharing all that is great about this area with fellow relocators and can’t wait to start matching them up with their perfect homes here.” David will be predominantly working between the two Moores London platform offices currently at Grantham and imminently at Peterborough Railway Stations, in order to fulfil Moores’ bespoke meet and greet service to visiting London buyers.

COMMERCIAL As part of their ongoing strategy of expansion, Moores have celebrated phenomenal developments this year including the recruitment of additional industry experts and brand new initiatives in both Commercial Property and Financial Services. The experts appointed review their first months in post…

RENTAL Moores successful property search services on behalf of London buyers have created a new opportunity for Paula Smith who is now heading up the Moores Country Rentals team and brings with her a wealth of experience in the rental sector – a service which has proved especially popular with London buyers who sometimes prefer to take a short term rental once their own property has sold, explains Paula. “My role is to place clients in a suitable rental property while we source exactly the right permanent move for them within our extensive portfolio of rural property for sale.” Contact Paula on Tel: 01572 757979

MORTGAGES In response to market demand, Moores Commercial was launched in the spring of 2016 under the stewardship of commercial property experts Keith Pepperdine and Ben Freckingham. Keith specialises in new building projects and land acquisition and commented, “We have been delighted with the enthusiastic response from commercial clients in the months since launch and have already been successful with instructions on large sites due for development in Langham and Corby Glen. Ben is a leading authority on commercial property matters and has had significant success providing solutions for clients seeking light industrial and High Street premises.” For advice on the sale, lease or purchase of commercial property, contact Keith or Ben directly on Tel: 01664 431330 or through any Moores Branch Office.

Chris Dolby is a Mortgage Consultant who has forged a professional partnership with Moores in July this year. Chris has twenty five years’ experience in Financial Services and holds a Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice. “The unusual circumstances created by the Brexit vote followed by a reduction in the Bank of England base interest rate mean I am currently able to create some incredibly beneficial mortgage deals on behalf of Moores clients.” For advice on mortgage planning or insurance, contact Chris on Tel: 07505 279 603 E: chris@utopiafinancialservices.com to arrange a consultation. • Contact Moores The team at Moores are delighted to offer valuations and advice on all aspects of buying, selling and letting property. They are available to contact via branch offices in Oakham, Stamford, Melton, Uppingham, and London as well as the London platform at Grantham Railway Station. AVING worked on various interior projects together, Oakham-based interior designer Elizabeth Stanhope and photographer Chelone Wolf have embarked on a unique collaboration, creating a spectacular series of fine art photographs. “I love to find new challenges to test my skills,” Chelone explains, “and this fine art equestrian project is a perfect example of applying my portrait lighting techniques to an alternative subject.” It was quite a change in tack for Chelone, whose usual photography work focuses on music, fashion and portraits of the human variety. But “the similarities to working with humans are striking,” he says. “Although the images may appear distinct to the naked eye, in many ways they follow the same process as my other work. I strive to capture emotion and soul with a hint of romance. The shoot took place on location at Mushill Stables in Leicestershire, owned by British event rider Lauren Shannon. “Some of the horses loved my camera and even posed enthusiastically, while others were quite shy. The stable cat also loved being caught on camera.” “As the collection has been so successful, we are developing the project throughout 2017, with both championship horses and private commissions – please get in touch if you would like your animals to be featured.” • To order a print or for more information, please contact Chelone on tel: 07760 540744. Get ready to party! With the festive season just around the corner, Catherine Varney sought the help of local hair and beauty experts to find out how you can look cracking at this year’s Christmas parties...

Create the perfect base

You need to ensure your skin is in tip-top condition to deal with the onslaught of late nights, alcohol and carb-heavy foods. Our favourite local salons have the answer:

1

“The Dermabrasion Facial is fantastic at giving the skin a deep exfoliation that not only allows skin products to penetrate at the maximum level and leave you with a radiant glow, but also creates a great base for flawless evening makeup,” says Nicola Harrold, Langham Body and Beauty Studio. “The ESPA Advanced Enzyme Facial is a powerful and highly effective treatment to boost cell regeneration and give an instantly smooth, radiant complexion. A cleanse is followed by an Enzyme peel containing botanical extracts and pumpkin enzymes to deeply exfoliate and renew dead skin cells, followed by a smoothing massage with Rose Quartz Crystals and a lifting and smoothing mask to give your skin a more plumped and firmer appearance.” Annabel Miles, Barnsdale Hall Hotel. Lucky Rutland & Market Harborough Living readers can quote ‘Rutland Living’ to receive 20% off the regular price for this and the ESPA Salt and Oil Body Scrub. “Party-season taking its toll? I would recommend one of the Elemis facials: the Visible Brilliance and the Modern Skin facial are purifying, rejuvenating and anti-ageing to help dramatically revive the skin.” Naomi, Naomi Nails and Beauty.

Top hair tips The winter months can play havoc with hair so it’s more important than ever to look after your locks and give it the extra attention it needs.

1

Thomas Potts from Thomas Hairdressing has some valuable advice: “The body always requires more water at this time of year as we take in more stodgy foods and higher levels of alcohol. The best thing we can do for our hair is take an evening a few days before the party or event and apply a generous helping of a moisture mask or protein-based conditioner. Leave this on as long as possible, giving the hair the best chance of absorbing all the goodness from the treatment.” The girls at GLOW recommend getting the most out of your winter colour: “Our new secret to perfect hair that’s glowing inside and out is L’Oreal Pro SMARTBOND. A must-have product that can be mixed in with colours, toners or treatments and helps rebuild the hair fibre from the inside, even during colouring services.” “Short on time? We all know that Christmas is an exceptionally busy time and as our hair is normally the ‘to do’ job that gets put to the bottom of our list, we offer an Express Colour service that takes 15 minutes. Whether it’s a t-section of highlights or those pesky roots along the hairline, you can be in and out within the hour so there is plenty of time left to party!” The Creme Hair & Beauty team.

The smart girl’s guide to going out after work It’s the annual office Xmas party – but how can you do a whole day’s work and then still look good enough to dance the night away? Follow our five-step plan to ensure your hair and make-up goes the distance...

1

Ready, set, glow As it’s highly likely your summer holiday tan has now faded, it’s time to fake it. The ideal time to have a tan is two days before the big night out. This gives you a night to sleep in it, wash it off the next morning and by the following day, it settles to a fabulous bronze that’s perfect just for you. St Tropez tans are not a generic colour for everyone; the formula works with the melanocyte cells in your skin and will only take your tan to how sunkissed you would naturally go after two weeks in the sun - tantastic! Get your glow on with St Tropez at Creme Hair and Beauty.

When it comes to make-up, preparation is the key. You need a base that will withstand eight hours in the office and then keep going well into the evening – and for this, you can’t beat Estee Lauder’s double-wear foundation. It goes on flawlessly, offering excellent coverage and is one of the longest lasting bases I’ve ever tried...use over primer for even more longevity. Swap your subtle nude office lipstick for a bold, bright red and you’ll instantly look more glam. Choose the right shade and it’ll give you dual benefits; making your teeth look whiter and your skin look fresher and brighter. Olive skin with warm undertones look great in an orangey-red; fair complexions with cool undertones can really rock raspberry shades whilst medium complexions with fair tones can carry off a true pillar box red. Update your eye make-up with black liquid eyeliner...practice at home beforehand and you’ll perfect the celebrity favourite ‘cat-eye

2

3

Go goth Not merely the preserve of challenging teenagers, the sultry & glamorous ‘goth’ look is set to be big news this party season as Leah Burnell from Head Candy in Market Harborough told me: “Party hair and updos will see lots of chignons and casual buns with wispy edges for a romantic, timeless look Also finger waves will feature to add drama and impact; they look great in front of a casual bob for a fresh take on the popular style made famous by Caroline Flack. Make up trends will feature dramatic rich, dark hues – try dark blackcurrant lips and black eyeliner.” And it’s not just hair and make-up trends that will be dark and mysterious: after much excitement about the celebrity-inspired vampire facials in last month’s article, I am excited to announce that the Chaelis Clinic will very shortly be offering PRP facials (platelet rich plasma), as they are properly known. Owner Lesley Spencer told me: “Blood is taken from the client, separated into its component parts, and re-introduced via a Derma Pen into the clients’ numbed face, décolletage or wherever their area of concern is. This appears to be new to the aesthetics industry, but had in fact been used in medicine very successfully for many tens of years. The benefits are numerous, and have been proven to aid in serious bodily traumas.”

44

flick’ that will take just seconds to do. Add some individual lashes to the outer corner of the eyes and voila, instant sex appeal. ‘Desk-to-party’ hairstyles are easy to achieve if you start the day with soft waves throughout your hair. Take your inspiration from the girls at GLOW who show how you can instantly up the glam factor with some hair accessories, a quick and classy ponytail or a soft Grecian updo: follow the tutorials on instagram or @glowatbarnsdale on Facebook

4

5

A final spritz of your favourite perfume will banish any stale office odour and leave you smelling and feeling fresh. Layer up the scent with a shower gel and body lotion that morning for long-lasting results. Try Allure by Chanel or Eternity by Calvin Klein – both still in the top 10 list of best-selling perfumes of all time.

Save the date! Want to get professional advice on how to get super skin or achieve immaculate make-up? Head down to South Street in Oakham on 29th November where the lovely Ellique ladies are hosting their Christmas event. With representatives from Decleor, OPI and NEW CID there to answer all of your beauty questions, there’ll also be advice on improving your skin condition and perfect party make-up. NE of our all-time favourite Harborough shops, Keals, is celebrating its second year at The Old Fire Station. And to celebrate they’ve decided to open a second space called… wait for it… 2nd Space. What originally started as a workshop for Keals owner Eric to store his vintage gems and get creative making bespoke furniture, “it was such a fab space and had so much potential that we thought – why not turn it into a showroom?”, Hayley explains. “After a lot of rebuilding and putting our own stamp on it, 2nd Space is now open.” It’s an eclectic mix of the vintage, industrial and antique, the restored, handbuilt and repurposed – mainly housing their bigger pieces and furniture. “The idea is to eventually have a small salvage section so, for example, if you were after a Victorian door or a 1950s Bakelite light pull or even an old key for a cabinet, we’ll be the place to come. “We also plan to offer some craft courses in the future – and the showroom is for hire if you need a meeting place with a difference!” • 2nd Space is currently currently open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am-ish to 4 pm-ish and other times by appointment. You’ll find it at The Printers Yard, Goward Street, Market Harborough LE16 9AF. You can contact Eric and Hayley at Keals, The Old Fire Station, 10a Abbey Street, Market Harborough, LE16 9AA, tel: 01858 419798 www.keals.net.

Nature and nurture at Barnsdale Gardens WORDS: AMANDER MEADE PHOTOGRAPHY: HAMILTON PHOTOGRAPHY

Japanese Garden Autumn © Richard Adams

T

WENTY years ago, Nick Hamilton was quietly building a nursery business in Exton while his famous father Geoff broadcast to millions as chief presenter on ‘Gardener’s World’. Geoff’s sudden and untimely death in 1996 plunged his family into shock and left them with a quandary as to what would become of his beloved garden at Barnsdale – enjoyed on the small screen by millions but never open to the public. Nick and the family decided to continue Geoff’s legacy and in the last two decades have doubled the size of the gardens, developed and opened them all year round to the delight of visitors from all over Europe. Nick reflects on the progress of the gardens and offers his advice on how to make the best of your own plot at this time of year.

Inspiration and education…

Having acquired the piece of land adjacent to Geoff’s original TV garden some years before his death, Nick’s team has been able to develop gardens twice the size of the original site including 38 different themed areas, features and attractions. Favourites include the Gentleman’s Cottage Garden, the Wildlife Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Woodland Walk. But Nick’s aim is that these should be far from ‘show gardens’.

56

“We are professional horticulturists so our aim is to create wonderful planting but ultimately to educate and inspire. The realism is very important so that visitors can take our ideas and professional expertise and apply it to their own garden, which is the best reward for us.” To mark Geoff’s 20th anniversary, the Winter Border was recently redesigned by a recipient of a bursary from Geoff Hamilton’s New Gardeners Foundation and officially reopened by TV gardener, Carol Klein who was a close friend of Geoff. The bursary scheme was created in Geoff’s memory to support students at Writtle College in Chelmsford where he and Nick both studied. Barnsdale supply an annual bursary of up to £4,000 for a student of any age and level studying practical horticulture. Nick is also a well-known supporter of local community cohesion – often to be found speaking to clubs and societies, ‘In Bloom’ groups, local primary schools or colleges and generally banging the drum for gardening

on all levels. With the kind of ‘can do’ attitude that often accompanies busy people, it’s hard to imagine Nick turning down an invitation to speak or accompany a group on a tour – his love of his subject is both compelling and infectious.

The best ideas….

According to Nick, Barnsdale is as inspiring in January as it is in June. “People always ask when the best time to come is. My reply is when your own garden looks at its worst because that’s when you will take home the best ideas.” A ‘Mecca’ for gardeners from all over the UK and beyond, the Barnsdale Nursery produces a wide variety of high-quality plants including more unusual and rare species that are all propagated from the gardens – the ultimate gift idea for those with green fingers. The Tea Rooms serve delicious lunches and teas made from home-grown ingredients and come highly recommended.

PREPARING FOR THE SEASON AHEAD Even in the coldest months, Nick believes there is always plenty to do outside – here’s his advice on jobs to complete this month. • Sow your early broad beans and peas outside now (hardy varieties include Aqua Dulce Claudia and Douce Provence). Cover with a cloche to mollycoddle them a little. • Give the greenhouse a good clean using a pressure washer or plenty of hot soapy water and a scrubbing brush to dislodge algae and hibernating pests/eggs from all the cracks and crevices. • Collect up fallen leaves around the garden and compost them for seed sowing, potting or as organic matter for the borders. Put the leaves in bin bags, pierce a couple of holes in each, tie the tops and, if possible, put them somewhere warmish to break down for about a year. • Take rose cuttings by pruning out a healthy shoot. Select a good strong basal bud and cut horizontally underneath then about 8 inches from the base, cut a sloping cut above another strong healthy bud. Dip in hormone rooting powder or liquid then push two thirds of its depth into the ground and firm well. • It’s not too late to plant garlic this month by pushing cloves just below ground level at a spacing of 15cm with 30cm between the rows. • Lift your dahlias as soon as a good frost has turned the tops black. Cut the tops down, lift them carefully and remove the soil with your hands then using water so they are absolutely clean before placing them upside down to dry for a couple of weeks. Pack them into boxes or pots with just moist compost and store in a frost free area for winter. • Cover tender shrubs with horticultural fleece. I cover anything I feel might be damaged by the weather including Myrtus, Laurus, Abelia, Rosmarinus, Phormium etc as it’s better to be safe than sorry. The fleece allows light, air and water to pass through it removing the need to keep taking it off and replacing.

A taste of Italy for Summer 2017 - Puglia

P

UGLIA is located in the ‘heel’ of Italy’s boot. This unique corner of the country mixes rugged countryside and unspoilt beaches with quaint fishing villages and secluded towns. In the South is the walled city of Otranto, ideally placed for exploring the southern cape of Italy. Continue up the coast and you will reach Lecce, famous for its baroque architecture, and further North is Ostuni, which is nicknamed the White City because of its beautiful whitewashed buildings and the sandy beaches of Torre, Canne and Savelletri di Fasano. Across the region you will find clusters of traditional ‘Trulli’ houses, which are traditional houses with conical roofs. These curious buildings were first built during the 14th century and were created as housing that could be easily demolished, enabling the landlords to avoid paying tax. They are now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are an iconic symbol of Puglia. Puglia is becoming ever more recognised around the world as a top ‘foodie’ destination for those seeking out exceptional culinary experiences with such a diverse variety of places, restaurants and flavours to discover. Oundle Travel have three recommended properties in this stunning region:

The Masseria Montelauro Dating back to 1878, the beautiful Masseria Montelauro rests peacefully amidst the Puglian countryside, only three miles from the ancient Greek whitewashed city of Otranto. Bed and Breakfast – 7 Nights – From £989.00 per person – July 2017.

Under attack!

Caroline Aston uncovers one night 100 years ago, when a German Zeppelin bombed Rutland and Leicestershire “At about 11.15pm Mathy decided to lighten his airship’s load by ditching 32 bombs, all of which fell into deserted fields near Sproxton, Leicestershire. A few moments later, he loosed a high explosive device over Edmondthorpe on the Rutland/Leicestershire border, following it up with 14 or 15 more of the same.“

Y

EARS ago, round about this time of remembrance, I recall listening to a very old lady telling me about the night Rutland was bombed by a German Zeppelin airship during the Great War of 1914-18. It was certainly a gripping story, but I admit that I was dubious. Maybe a scrap of long forgotten local legend had been added to, embroidered just a tad – so I filed this snippet away in the attic that is my brain and more or less forgot about it, until now. 2016 is a year of anniversaries: in December it will be 80 years since Edward VIII abdicated for love of Mrs Wallis Simpson and it’s a century since the horror of the Battle of the Somme. However, I now find that it’s also 100 years since that a Zeppelin bombed Rutland: I must eat my words because that raid did happen and was just as dramatic as I’d been told so long ago.

The Zeppelin

Zeppelins, named after their inventor Count von Zeppelin, came to be much-feared weapons of war. Cigarshaped and sinister, they had a lightweight metal framework containing gasbags filled with highly flammable hydrogen gas. The whole thing was covered with a linen skin called an envelope and underneath it hung its control centre, housed in a capsule known as a gondola. In here was the engine that drove the airship’s propellers, the steering equipment and a crew armed with machine guns plus the bombs intended to rain down death and destruction. Britain got its first taste of a ‘blitz’ in January 1915, four months after war was declared. Kaiser Wilhelm was King George V’s first cousin and had vetoed this new tactic until then. Like many others at the time, he was pretty sure that the war would be short and sharp, maybe over by Christmas, and was loth to potentially destroy cultural heritage sites. And, quite naturally, he was uncomfortable about dropping bombs on his relatives at Buckingham Palace! But pressure on him mounted and he ultimately gave permission to attack Britain (though with the exclusion of London at first). In May 1915 the capital finally joined the list of targets with a raid east of the Tower of London.

The night of the attack

Captained by Kapitanleutnant Heinrich Mathy Zeppelin L.13 nosed its way over the British coast at around 9.15pm on March 5th 1916. His was the third Zeppelin to attack that night – but Mathy was not a happy man. He’d

had engine trouble, run into a terrible snowstorm over the North Sea and visibility was dreadful. Added to this, and unknown to him at the time, he was way off course too. He thought he was near Sunderland when he was actually near the mouth of the Humber in Lincolnshire and contemporary reports have him assuming he was approaching Scotland - when he was really near Nottingham. Finally, exasperated by yet more engine problems, Mathy decided to abandon his original targets, turn off the power and hopefully let the wind carry him towards Hull… But, of course, his drift was beginning in the East Midlands, not the North, and would ultimately lead him to the Kent coast later that night. At about 11.15pm Mathy decided to lighten his airship’s load by ditching 32 bombs, all of which fell into deserted fields near Sproxton, Leicestershire. A few moments later, he loosed a high explosive device over Edmondthorpe on the Rutland/ Leicestershire border, following it up with 14 or 15 more of the same. The second batch fell into farmland bounded by the triangle made up of Rutland villages Market Overton, Thistleton and Greetham but, mercifully, there was not a single casualty and no property damaged. Overall that night the three Zeppelin raiders killed 18 people, injured another 52 and caused over £25,000 worth of damage, a vast sum at the time. As for Mathy, he eventually made it home but, by then, only two of his four engines were working, his traversing gears had jammed and he’d been damaged by two rounds from the anti-craft gun at Shoeburyness. The gunners at Sheerness did their best to bring him down with their six-pounder gun but he passed safely out to sea at Deal on March 6th, around 2.25am. Earlier in 1915 Loughborough suffered 10 fatalities and 12 casualties in what became the first aerial attack on Leicestershire of the War while Harringworth, near Rutland’s Seaton village, was bombed in the October of that year. Interestingly, Zeppelin L.34 which carried out that raid was captained by Max Dietrich, uncle of screen legend Marlene Dietrich. To finish, some sobering statistics. By 1918, that first German ‘blitz’ had killed 835 people, injured 1,358 more and had caused over one and a half million pounds worth of damage. Thankfully Rutland doesn’t appear in the list of victims but, as you can see, it was a close run thing. RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2016

QKS Kitchens just keeps getting better

Q

KS has recently invested substantially in the next generation of kitchens for its showrooms. Malcolm Brandwood, owner, is one of the kitchen industry’s best known characters, and he is a great believer in buying British wherever possible – for quality, value and above all service support. Two of the main brands he stocks, Sheraton and Charles Yorke, are both UK businesses. QKS Kitchens was Sheraton’s first customer when they started out near Doncaster 15 years ago, and they remain customer Account No. 0001 on Sheraton’s books. George Clarke of Amazing Spaces, who is Sheraton’s Brand Ambassador, recently signed his new book to Malcolm with the words ‘To our first and oldest customer – congratulations Malcolm.’ Malcom sees the Sheraton offering as going from strength to strength. In the kitchens recently installed in the showroom you will find stylish

kitchens with great features and, together with NEFF appliances, you can be sure of a state-of-the-art kitchen. Available now, for example, is the slide open ‘Bake Off’ oven as it has become fondly known, with a front opening that goes back into the wall and a proving tray beneath. Downstairs there is an absolutely stunning Charles Yorke installation, for when you are looking for the absolute top of the market – a really classic look. QKS have two very skilled kitchen designers in Andrew and John who can bring your project to life and ensure its practicality. They are backed up by a highly advanced CAD system that allows for a multiplicity of options to be explored. QKS can truly be described as the ‘Kitchen Kings’. Take a look next time you are passing at the new showroom offerings. • QKS Kitchens, The Maltings, Barnack Rd, Stamford PE9 2NA Tel: 01780 756514 www.qksstamford.co.uk RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2016

‘Savers’ batten down the hatches with low interest rates

T

HIS month, our local property investment advisor David Crooke, author of the ‘Rutland and Stamford Property News’, online blog www.rutlandandstamfordpropertyblog.co.uk and managing director of UPP Property Agents addresses the impact of the continuing low interest rate for ‘money savers’ versus the financial rewards potentially available for buy-to-let landlords. The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee’s decision in early August to cut the base rate to an all-time low of 0.25%, indicates that savers should prepare themselves for interest rates to stay low well into the early 2020s. The ‘yield’ (a posh word for interest rates and return) on Government 10-year bonds is currently 0.61%. This indicates that the money markets believe that The Bank of England’s base rate will, on average over the next 10 years, be below the 0.61% rate they are buying the 10-year bonds at (because they would lose money if the average was over 0.61%). UK interest rates are going to be low for a long time. For those who have saved throughout their working lives and are looking for ways to maximise on savings, tying money into property could prove advantageous. At the time of searching, the best deal on the internet was a 5-year fixed rate at 2.5% pa with ‘Weatherbys Bank’. A considerable £200,000 ‘nest egg’ or inheritance windfall would earn £5,000 pa – not much of a return. Conversely, growth in Oakham house prices and princely buy-to-let yields have made property investment in Oakham an appealing option for many. Very interestingly, the average yield over the last five years for Oakham buy-to-let property has been 5% pa, and average property

values over the same period have risen by a very respectable 21.1%. Using these averages, it can be said an Oakham landlord’s property would be worth £242,200 and they would have received a total of £50,000 in rent – generating a total return of £292,200. Meanwhile, looking at our ‘savers’ (using the average savings rates for the last five years - even if they had reinvested the interest), their £200,000 would only be £221,184. There are, of course, risks as well as benefits with buy-to-lets though, and investing in buy-to-let means locking up capital in a property that may fall in value. Another option would be stock market income-based investment funds, which are paying around 5%, especially if paying into a tax free stocks and shares ISA. The other side of the coin is it is impossible to buy an unloved stock market income-based investment fund and set about renovating it and adding value personally.

Businesses rally to support Angel Fair Businesses across Rutland have offered their support for a charity Christmas fair that will support families of terminally ill people this season.

N

EW for 2016, the Angel Christmas Fair, founded by Lady Victoria Leatham, will be held at Thorpe Hall Hospice, Peterborough, on 3 and 4 December with more than 50 stalls already confirmed and all proceeds going to Sue Ryder, which provides palliative care through the centre. Among the stalls are Knossington-based Peachy Belts, which has recently launched a new range of belts available as gifts or accessories for the Christmas party season. Owner Zoe Glover said: “It’s exciting because we don’t have a lot of good Christmas fairs in the area. The Angel Fair will fill the gap in the market that has been left by Irnham. “I have got local clientele and I don’t often have an opportunity to show them my range of belts and buckles.” To support the event, local businesses have sponsored large wicker angels which will be lit at night and will welcome guests to the grade I listed hall throughout the event and are where the fair got its name. Sponsors will then keep their angels on display throughout the festive season. • The Angel Fair will be open to everyone on 3 and 4 December from 10am - 4pm. Entry costs £5 per person.

The event enabled 70 exclusively invited business colleagues and acquaintances from within Rutland and surrounding areas to meet, chat, and network in a relaxed, friendly setting. Canapes, wine, and other refreshments were provided to guests by excellent waiting staff, and really helped to set the tone of the evening. Lest we forget David Cashman of Leicestershire-based Western Front Pilgrim Tours reflects on the First World War 100th anniversary commemorations to date and important dates for 2017 Commemorating the Battle of The Somme

Commemorative events in France and Belgium in 2017

This November 18th will mark the 100th anniversary of the official end of the Battle of The Somme in Northern France. On 1st July of this year, the centenary of the start of this battle was commemorated both in Britain, notably by The Queen at Westminster Abbey together with the attendance in France of the Royal Family, led by the Prince of Wales. It’s expected that a similar representation in France and Belgium will occur in 2017. I was fortunate to be one of around 10,000 that also attended the main ceremony at the Thiepval Memorial in France, which lists over 72,000 missing British soldiers from the battle. Having attended the 80th and 90th anniversaries, what struck me most was the number of people who attended this year. There were many groups from villages and towns across the UK, paying their respects to their relatives or simply to men listed on village memorials. Many schools were also learning of the fate of men from their schools and local area, and I had the pleasure of talking to teachers and year 6 and 7 pupils from a school in Cumbria who were bravely walking across the battlefields following the men from their community, despite the rain! The July 2016 commemorations focused on the first day of the offensive where the British casualties on this day alone amounted to nearly 60,000, with approximately 20,000 killed or missing. During the five months that followed, there were over 1,000,000 casualties on all sides. The majority of British soldiers who attacked that day were known as Kitchener’s army. This was in reference to the nature of the battalions that comprised citizen volunteers from August 1914. These battalions comprised men from the same towns and villages, places of work, sporting and church clubs. The sheer number of casualties therefore caused a tremendous shock in their respective communities.

There are many more such events taking place in 2017, which will have extensive coverage. After all, in November 1916 the Great War was just over two years old and still had another two more years to run. The main 100th commemorations events to look out for include Vimy Ridge (9 April) and Cambrai (20 November) both in France. In Belgium it will be Messines Ridge, a precursor to the 3rd Battle of Passchendaele, just south of Ypres (7 June) and the start (31 July) and finish (6 November) to the east of Ypres of the latter battle. The Messines battle opened up with the detonation under the German front line of 19 mines at 3.10am which, according to press reports, was heard as far away as London. Some of these craters are still visible today and attract many visitors. For 2017 it will be essential to book in advance for accommodation and more importantly tickets for these events. The tickets for “2016 Somme” were issued by the UK Government via a ballot system because of demand. Also, due to tightened security, tickets matching your passport details will be the only valid entry. So turning up on the day ticketless will result in disappointment. It’s worth noting that in the days leading up to the 2017 events, access to the sites of the commemorations will be forbidden as preparations are made for the ceremonies. Lastly, remember that many Rutland and Leicestershire men who had survived the Somme would be killed in 1917 and 1918.

The 110th (Leicestershire) Brigade of Kitchener volunteers This shock was felt across Rutland and Leicestershire when the 110th (Leicestershire) Brigade of Kitchener volunteers went into action on 14th July. When relieved two days later, they had suffered over 1,900 casualties out of approximately 4,000 men, of which over 500 were killed or missing. A survivor of this battle said “Christ, there’ll be hell to pay in Leicester and Loughborough and Coalville and Melton and Uppingham, when they hear about this. The Leicester Brigade eh? Bloody well wiped out”.

David Cashman guides parties around the battlefields of The Western Front in Belgium and France. David will be taking tours around the above mentioned anniversaries in 2017 – find further details at www.westernfrontpilgrimtours.com RUTLAND & MARKET HARBOROUGH LIVING NOVEMBER 2016

Power Your Ride with an Electric Bike

Rutland Cycling have launched a dedicated Electric Bike Centre in all stores and online, with over 70 electric bikes now available to buy, demo or hire.

E

LECTRIC bikes have been around since the 1990s, but e-bike technology has come on in leaps and bounds recently – the latest generation of e-bikes are light, quick to charge and have a range of up to 200km on a single charge. Just plug the battery into a normal socket and it’s fully charged in 3-4 hours. While some used to think an electric bike was cheating, that stigma has evaporated fast as more and more riders discover just how much fun it is to have some turbo boost in your back pocket – conserving more of your time and energy means you can conquer that big hill, take on another lap of the woods, challenge yourself to ride harder and faster and get more riding into your session. If you’re recovering from an injury or illness, then an electric bike is an ideal option, providing all the advantages of a regular bike, while reducing the strain on your body. With the broad range of e-bikes now on the market, there are models to suit everyone from commuters and leisure cyclists, through to mountain bikers looking for that extra excitement on the trails. So if you’d like to ride faster, save money commuting, get a virtual push up the hills, or just have loads more fun out on your regular trails, electric bikes are the way to go. Rutland’s electric bike range features all the main brands, including Specialized, SCOTT, Giant, Trek, Cube, Raleigh, Haibike, Electra and Ebco. Prices start at £899, or you can hire an electric bike for just £19.99. To find out more, buy or demo a bike, visit one of Rutland Cycling’s stores at Rutland Water, Peterborough, Grafham Water, Fineshade or one of their five stores in Cambridge. • For more information visit www.rutlandcycling.com or telephone 0330 555 0080.

James Bowie, Barnsdale Lodge’s new General Manager

P

OSITIONED on the North shore of the spectacular Rutland Water, Barnsdale Lodge has become somewhat of an institution. Originally a farmhouse and owned by Thomas Noel’s family since 1760, Thomas converted it to a hotel in 1989 and, since then, we’ve seen it earn numerous accolades including being in the Sunday Telegraph’s ’50 of Britain’s cosiest hotels’ and runner up in the Telegraph’s ‘20 Top Places for a Warm Welcome’. Rachael Bull caught up with the new General Manager, James Bowie, about the hotel and their plans for the future.

You joined Barnsdale in July – what were you up to before then?

‘Yes I started officially on 4th July. Before then I’d been Deputy General Manager at Fawsley Hall Hotel and Spa in Northamptonshire, so not a million miles from here.

So you’ve been in the hotel industry for some time then?

You could say that! My first home was The Belmont Hotel in Leicester. My great-grandmother bought it in 1934, then my grandparents ran it and now it’s my father’s. So the industry has been in our blood for generations – I worked at The Belmont for eight years and, apart from a couple of forays into other things, I’ve been in hospitality my whole career.

What attracted you to Barnsdale Lodge?

There are a few different things. It’s my first General Manager role, which is really exciting. And when I first met Ed, his vision for the Rutland Retreats project and the hotel generally was really impressive. He already has a fantastic legacy for quality food and service offer and has a real, renewed focus of what to do with the Lodge. And the beautiful location helps – it can’t be beaten.

What have you got coming up at Barnsdale Lodge in the near future?

I’m excited about the plans we have for refurbishment – in the main hotel we’re completely redoing all the bedrooms and have some big changes with our banqueting offer. We’re also doing a lot of work with the whole team to improve the service and make everything spot on for our guests, from start to finish – lots of team training and such like. I’m a real believer in having engaged people on the team. If people feel engaged and valued, that’s reflected in how they welcome the guests.

What has impressed you the most since arriving?

There’s so much, but the team has really impressed me. It’s a very welcoming, friendly and professional group of people we’ve got at Barnsdale Lodge – I felt that personally when I started and I see it in the way our guests are welcomed. It’s great to see.

summer and seeing people relaxing out there, enjoying a drink and basking in the sunshine was great. Another favourite part of it for me is our guests – they’re a really nice mix of people and I’m enjoying getting to know them.

What do you love most about your job?

Have you and your family been able to enjoy the area?

It’s got to be the variety – every day is different and I never know what I’m going to turn up to when I arrive each morning. I also enjoy meeting such an interesting variety of people, both those who I work with and guests too. It certainly keeps the brain ticking over.

What do you like most about the hotel itself?

It’s got a really warm and homely feel to it. Ed treats it like a big family home rather than anything corporate or stuffy. Guests feel like it’s home away from home. The pet-friendly aspect is a surprisingly important one – people like that. My favourite part of the hotel is the courtyard. We had such a lovely

Yes, very much so. We’ve been on bike rides around the lake and my seven-year-old managed to get round the full circuit, bless her. She did very well. I’m a big fan of Oakham and its lovely mix of independent shops and the kids love Oakham Castle – especially the dressing up. We also really like farm shops – Farndon Fields in Market Harborough is a firm favourite in our family. • Barnsdale Lodge Hotel, The Avenue, Exton, Oakham, Rutland LE15 8AH.
