The ARB Report by Wendy Wagner,

Architectural Review Board Administrator This year has turned out to be another year of very active new construction activities in Berkeley Hall. Fifteen (15) homes are currently under construction, and an additional sixteen (16) Plans for new residential construction are being reviewed by the ARB for approval. Eight (8) different contractors are associated with all of this activity. Presently, there are 279 homes in the community, which represent over 50% build out.

The ARB is responsible for the enforcement of the ARB Standards, the Covenants and Bylaws for Berkeley Hall. They should be contacted to obtain approval for all renovations, modifications and additions that affect the exterior of your home, which includes landscaping and painting. They are normally scheduled to meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and your submittal must be completed with the applicable fees one week prior to the meeting to be placed on their agenda. Incomplete submittals will not be reviewed. The ARB office is also responsible for lot signs and mailboxes. Approval is not required when performing routine landscaping such as replacing dead or diseased plant material or adding items to existing plant beds. The property owner is responsible for removing dead, damaged or diseased trees, whether it is on improved or unimproved lots. Any statuaries or other yard decorations such as bird baths, statues, fountains and decorative planters that are taller than 36 inches must be approved before they are placed in your yard. Please contact the ARB if your mailbox post needs a fresh coat of paint or you need a replacement mailbox or new lettering. You may call 843.815.8443 or email wwagner@berkeleyhallclub.com with any questions regarding your property.

CB2 Magazine Features Weddings at Berkeley Hall According to a feature article in the June 2014 edition of CB2 Magazine, planners for the Mackenzie & Dexter Wedding wanted to host the event entirely outdoors and were going for a bohemian chic look for both the ceremony and reception. The Bride envisioned “vibrant flowers, fresh greenery, twinkly lights and an unforgettable party”. They found their perfect venue at Berkeley Hall. Following their ceremony that was held at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, guests were transported to the Berkeley Hall Clubhouse. There, they were greeted in the main lobby with signature cocktails, then escorted to the rear of the clubhouse onto a manicured lawn for a romantic and unforgettable celebration underneath a clear tent with sparkling lights. The Club embodies southern elegance with a personal touch, while incorporating the more laid back outdoor theme that they desired. They found that and more at Berkeley Hall with its gardens, trees and lake providing so many beautiful places for photos. Members are encouraged to think of Berkeley Hall when considering their next private function. Maren Rogers, Director of Special Events, has the background and experience to assist in planning and hosting your very special event. If you schedule a private event between May 15 and Sept. 27, 2014 with catering charges totaling more than $1000, you will receive four (4) complimentary accompanied golf rounds that can be used anytime during the year..

Berkeley Hall Club Receives Another Readers’ Choice Award The Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette has just announced their 2014 Readers’ Choice Awards and Berkeley Hall Club has been voted Best Golf Course/Club by their subscribers. A whopping 200,000 votes were cast online during a 10-day voting window in May, when their readers completed a survey to select the best business people and businesses in 150+ categories cross all of Southern Beaufort County. This was the 10th year that the newspaper has conducted their survey to recognize the best of the best and we are proud to receive this distinction. This marks the 2nd Readers’ Choice Award bestowed on Berkeley Hall this year. In January, Hilton Head Monthly Magazine conducted their annual subscriber survey and their readers recognized Berkeley Hall as their Favorite Private Golf Community. Their results were tabulated from 5,507 electronic ballots received online. So the votes are in, and the people have spoken. Congratulations to the Members of Berkeley Hall!

4th Annual Wounded Heroes Golf Classic

Thanking our military heroes for their service to our country The Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes (LFWMH) works closely with the PGA’s “Birdies for the Brave” to raise funds for those severely wounded servicemen and women returning home from the war zones. “Birdies for the Brave” is a national military outreach organization that was founded by Phil Mickelson and his wife Lisa, and is now strongly supported by the PGA Tour. Their goal is to provide the assistance necessary for wounded veterans to make a smooth transition back into their communities. Ed Giannelli, Board Member at Large for the LFWMH, stated “The organization was formed so that the entire community can show their appreciation to the wounded combat veterans for the sacrifices they have made to allow us to live in the style that we currently enjoy.” He and other representatives from their organization visited TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida on June 2 to present “Birdies for the Brave” with a check for $115,000. The donation is a result of the Wounded Warriors Heroes Golf Classic hosted in May at the Hampton Hall Golf Club. The tournament included fifty-two Members from Berkeley Hall Club and eight Members from Wexford Plantation. In addition to their $200 entry fee, these participants made personal donations that totaled over $17,000. Over the past several years, the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes has donated more than $300,000 to the ‘Birdies for the Brave” Foundation. This year’s proceeds were earmarked for distribution to several organizations including the Military Warrior Support Foundation, Operation Homefront, K9s for Warriors, Special Operations Warrior Foundation and Feherty’s Troops First Foundation.

The Dog Days of Summer

By Kayne Hoecht, Community Maintenance Supervisor With the hottest days of the summer upon us, we are faced with some difficult environmental challenges to maintain and protect our landscape. For example, over the next couple of months, moisture levels will fluctuate greatly as temperatures begin to climb, and too much rain can damage the roots of plants just as easily as a lack of rainfall. Temperatures may also become too extreme for certain plants. As temperatures climb into the high nineties, plants will stop growing as they struggle just to survive. These hot, humid temperatures are also the cause of disease that will damage almost any type of plant. And let’s not forget the insects such as the chinch bugs and mole crickets that will destroy grasses that have not been treated. You can recognize the infestation of chinch bugs when your lawn resembles turf that is drying from lack of water. Upon closer inspection, you can actually see these small insects crawling through the canopy. These pests are always in existence, but this time of year is when their populations reach their peak, and we are more aware of the damage they’re causing. The best way to deal with these summer challenges is to stay ahead of the problems. You start by fixing any irrigation problems and rely on rain sensors to regulate your irrigation. Secondly, you take necessary steps to treat your landscape to prevent insects from damaging your plants. A healthy plant will have the best chance to resist an attack from a pest and survive summer weather conditions.

This coming-of-age story reveals the striking pangs and promise of an adolescent girl’s fitful awakening to adulthood. For 14-yearold June Elbus, the early death of her beloved uncle, artist Finn Weiss, blotted her world. When, shortly after the funeral, she was approached by another friend of the painter, she took comfort in their sharing of their loss. What followed though was unexpectedly intense. Rendered in the words of its main character, Carol Rifka Brunt’s debut novel captures the subtle intricacies of human relationships and the rough smoothing of maturation. Review by Barnes & Noble. Please Note: The Ladies Book will not be meeting in August, since many of its members will be away on vacation. For further information concerning the Book Club, please contact Wendy Hansen at hansenwendyj@gmail.com.

The Mullet and Menhaiden are in large schools, constantly on the run from wide smiling dolphins. By the oyster rakes you can hear the Shrimp crackle on the water as they attempt to evade the Trout and Redfish that feed on them. The tidal creeks are alive with plants and animals that are waiting for you to discover them.

Captain Eric

Our tidal estuaries are becoming more and more an ecological gem. Plants and animals coexist in this tightly knit circle of life driving a pulse that can only be fully appreciated by taking part in observing its grandeur. The Okatie not only is full of local history, but is commonly also a spectacular example of the tidal marsh ecology. Protected Wood Storks, Royal Terns, and Oyster Catchers are just a few of the birds you can expect to see, so bring your binoculars and telephoto lenses. The diversity of the tidal marsh ecology is dependent on conservation efforts. These efforts require conscious participation in order to understand the complexities of the life cycle. Outings are a great way to unite family with nature in a relaxed, controlled environment while entertaining and educating. The River Park invites you to many opportunities to discover this gem for yourself.

From The Golf & Greens Committee

The enjoyment of playing golf is one of the special benefits we share as members of Berkeley Hall. In order to continue providing you with a positive experience on the course, the Golf and Greens Committee has been focused on improving the Pace of Play for the benefit of all players. As part of the Committee’s ongoing focus, we are presenting a series of educational videos and articles that have been prepared by the USGA. The fact is that slow play detracts from the enjoyment of the game. In a recent study conducted by the National Golf Foundation, “slow play” was cited by 91% of those surveyed as what bothers them most and detracts from their golf experience. At Berkeley Hall, we have determined that 4 hours is an appropriate guideline for a foursome to complete 18 holes of golf. The first video in our series was entitled Be Prepared For Your Next Shot. {www.BerkeleyHallClub.com/NextShot.php to view} In this issue, the featured video is entitled Improving the Pace of Play Around the Green. {www.BerkeleyHallClub.com/greens.php to view.}

Handicap Committee Update The Berkeley Hall Handicap Committee continues to monitor score posting and has been emailing daily reminders to members who appear on the daily tee sheet but have no corresponding score posted for the round. Members are reminded to post scores, adjusted using Equitable Stroke Control, for all rounds they play conforming to the rules of golf. The committee is considering the use of penalty scores and alternative actions when scores go unposted. A recommendation will be presented to the Golf and Greens Committee by the end of the year. The committee is currently reviewing data collected to reevaluate stroke allocations (hole by hole handicap rankings) on both the North and South Courses. Data collection is complete on both courses for women’s hole rankings, and a recommendation will be presented to the Golf and Greens Committee at its July meeting. Men’s data collection is about two thirds complete, and a recommendation to the Golf and Green’s Committee for those rankings is expected to be presented before the end of the year. Two recommendations from the committee were recently approved. Members are now required to have a Berkeley Hall GHIN number and handicap to play in Berkeley Hall events. Where a member also has a handicap record at another course, those handicaps must now be linked. Golf shop staff can assist members who need help with this. In addition, all guests playing in Berkeley Hall events are now required to have a valid, active handicap record at their club. Handicaps are reviewed by golf shop staff as players sign up for scheduled tournaments.

Congratulations To Mike Balzer Congratulations to Berkeley Hall Member Mike Balzer for qualifying for the 2014 Player’s Am. Mike is our three time reigning Club Champion and qualified once again to compete in the Players Amateur being played July 10-13.

Dear Members,

You are invited to join the Players Amateur “2” Club!

The Heritage Classic Foundation is looking forward to conducting the 15th Annual Players Amateur at Berkeley Hall Club. This will be the third year that you have hosted the event and we thank you for all of your support through sponsorships, donations to the 2-Club, volunteering to work the tournament and opening your homes to players. We couldn’t do it without you! The Heritage Classic Foundation was formed in 1987 as a 501 (c)(3), not-for-profit organization. It serves as the operational and financial oversight group for the RBC Heritage presented by Boeing and The Players Amateur. Since the Foundation began, it has donated more than $23 million to universities, charities and medical institutions across South Carolina and Georgia. The Players Amateur is recognized as one of the premier amateur events in the country and as you know, many of its past participants have become successful on the professional level. Matt Kuchar, Ben Curtis, Rickie Fowler, Bill Haas, Kyle Stanley and Camilo Villegas are just a few of the past participants who have won PGA TOUR titles. On behalf of the Heritage Classic Foundation, we want to thank you for your support and hospitality. Hosting the Players Amateur is a wonderful way to showcase your beautiful community, your excellent staff and your unparalleled golf facilities. Sincerely,

Steve Wilmot Heritage Classic Foundation Tournament Director

Help support four outstanding nonprofit organizations:

Bluffton Self Help Hospice of the Lowcountry Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation It’s easy! Simply pledge $2.00 for every 2 made during the Players Amateur tournament at Berkeley Hall Club. Since its inception in 2012 the “2” Club has donated $25,000 to charity. In 2013, there were 138 “2s” made during tournament play which helped the “2” Club donate $10,000 to local charities. Each member upon pledging will receive one special logoed Shirt and Hat designed for “2” Club Supporters only. The cost of the shirt and hat will be deducted from the total amount owed to charity. At the conclusion of the event the total number of 2’s will be calculated and members will be notified. Here’s how it works: If 150 - 2’s are made during the 2014 Players Amateur: 150 x $2.00 = $300.00 $300.00 less $60.00 (payment for one shirt and hat) = $240.00 total contribution by the member.

Unless otherwise indicated on your pledge form, all collected proceeds will be split 50/50 between the four charities. If you would like to join or receive more information about the “2” Club, please contact Andy McMillen, Tournament Coordinator at andy@heritageclassicfoundation.com or at 843.671.2448.

National Media Coverage of the Players Amateur The national media will be focused on Berkeley Hall and the Players Amateur this year, as Golfweek Magazine and the Sirius PGA TOUR Network will be at the Club providing coverage of the tournament. Berkeley Hall and the Heritage Classic Foundation entered into an agreement with Golfweek Magazine to have their video team on site providing a live broadcast over their e-newsletter network. This network reaches 165,000 subscribers and top amateurs and coaches from coast to coast. It will include updates on scoring throughout the day and video recaps of the events along with player interviews. This coverage will be in addition to the Sirius PGA TOUR Radio program Maginnes on Tap, that will once again be broadcasting from the Men’s Locker Room with former PGA professional and host John Maginnes.

J.B Holmes was a 3-foot putt away from winning the Wells Fargo Championship when he backed away to size up the situation. It wasn’t about pressure. He was happy just to be there. His 3-foot putt gave him a 1-under 71 and a one-shot victory over Jim Furyk, which capped a remarkable comeback from a major health issue that wouldn’t be classified as a garden variety in golf. This was his third PGA Tour win nearly three years removed from brain surgery. “Just enjoying the moment,” Holmes said “You don’t get that very often, so getting up and thanking God for letting me have the opportunity to do it again. Whether I made it or not, just enjoy being there.”

Blayne Barber wins his first Web.Com Tour Event

Blayne Barber fired a 5-under 67 on Sunday to finish at 15-under 273, which was two shots in front of Alex Prugh to win the South Georgia Classic. This was Blayne’s first career win on the Web.com Tour and he was presented with the winner’s check for $117,000. The win increases his season total to $155,257 through May 6, and moves him up to #6 on the money list through eight events. Following the event, he was quoted as saying; “Today was just a blur. I played some good golf and the next thing I know I’m sitting here as a champion. I really didn’t see it coming this week. It really came from out of nowhere.”

A pendulum swings back and forth around a fixed point. In order for the putter face to release correctly, your putting stroke needs to resemble the motion of a pendulum. As illustrated in picture #1, I’ve tried to keep my wrists fixed, thus preventing or blocking the putter head from releasing beyond my hands. Tiger Woods often focuses on the release of the putter head, and when things don’t go well on the course, he refers to ‘dragging the putter head through impact.’ In other words, he does not allow the putter to release freely beyond his hands, and the head lags behind the handle through impact and into the follow through. Essentially, the putter face needs to rotate a few degrees open in the backswing, return to square through impact, and then close a corresponding amount into the follow through. A poor release will not only have an adverse effect on direction, but will also have a detrimental effect on your distance control.

In pictures 2-4, notice how the shaft of the putter points toward a fixed point on my torso – the fixed point around which a pendulum swings. A fantastic teaching aid that conveys the feel of a proper release is the Perfect Pendulum (www.perfectpendulum.com). (I love teaching aids that convey the message they are designed for in a simple and straightforward package, and this one does an excellent job.) If you are struggling with your putting, this is the best putting aid I have found, and I would highly recommend picking one up at the website. (I have no affiliation with Perfect Pendulum) Please keep in mind that there should not be any conscious closing of the face through impact. The putter head should swing behind the hands an equal amount to the distance it swings in front of the hands with the face rotating open and closed an equal amount in the back and through swing. Maintain a light grip, keep the wrists soft, and let the putter swing freely. You’re well on your way to a much better putting stroke…

We will use technology and even discuss a few old school ideas about how to get better. You will leave with invaluable information to help YOU play better golf. To enroll please call Andrew at 843.247.4688.

Guidelines For Your Junior Golfers this Summer I have so much to say to junior golfers – they are the future of the game! Andrew Rice Here is a summary of what I believe to be the most important points for them to observe: • Always walk versus ride! Golf carts have been forced into the game primarily for financial reasons. They do not speed up the game; they do not provide the golfer with a better experience; and they do not improve the design of golf courses! Do yourself a favor and commit to never riding again unless it is absolutely called for. • Compete, casually and seriously, as often as possible. One of the primary reasons why boys are much better chippers than girls is because they love to compete and try unique shots around the practice green. It is this competitive environment that stretches them to create new and better shots. Apply this philosophy to every element of the game. • Study and learn to appreciate the history of the game. Do you know who Bobby Jones is? Why is St. Andrews such a special place? Who is Dr. Alister MacKenzie? I wholeheartedly believe that this is an element of the game that is being lost on our young golfers – an appreciation of all who have walked the fairways before them. Read books and ask questions! You will be better off for it. • Take full advantage of every opportunity you are presented with. Do not give yourself the chance to look back on your career and regret that you did not give everything 100% effort. Do everything to the best of your ability! • Heart always beats out a pretty swing! When it comes to the game of golf, this statement will forever be true. All of the great champions played with a tremendous amount of heart; not all of them had pretty swings! • Have fun with the short game! Try to hit the craziest shots you can imagine. It will teach you how to control your club face and ultimately the ball. I actually remember having SW long drive contests. Try to hit the highest, lowest, shortest shots you can think of; it all adds up to creativity around the greens. • Work hard at the game. It’ll teach you about life and its challenges. Golf, like life, is not always fair, but patience, belief and persistence will pay off in the end. • You do not have to be the next Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus! This is a huge problem I see amongst junior golfers in society today. When did it stop being okay for junior golfers to just simply play the game for enjoyment? It seems that every junior golfer and their parents have their sights set on grandeur and no expense or sacrifice is too great for a slim shot at stardom. If you want to be as good as you can, by all means go for it, but if you just like the game for what it is, take it easy and just have fun! • Play with the best golfers you can find! Nothing will improve your game as quickly as playing with players that are a lot better than you. • If you are over 15 and serious about being good you need to look into getting stronger and fitter. Find a trainer who knows the golf swing and how to train for golf. Derek Lemire does... • Respect the etiquette, honesty and integrity of the game! Play the game at a different level than your peers. The vast majority of champions in the game were very clear in this regard – play golf the way it was meant to be played! Behave in a first class fashion on the course and it will start to carry over into all areas of your life.

Improve Your Golf Swing by Improving Your Balance

by Derek Lemire, MS Exercise Physiology, NSCA-CPT and TPICGFI When was the last time that you saw a PGA Tour player fall out of a shot during a round? Probably never, since Tour players understand the importance of maintaining their balance throughout the golf swing. That is probably not the case when you are playing with your friends and watching them fall out of their shots during your round. BALANCE! It is one of the most neglected and misunderstood parts of the golf swing, as improper balance will cause a multiple of swing problems including swaying away from the ball, reverse pivot, reverse spine angle and not being able to properly transfer your weight to your front side. If we analyze the cause of these swing problems, they can usually be traced back to the feet, so let’s start by addressing that problem!!!

Here is a simple test to determine your ability to maintain good balance. Take a stop watch and stand with your shoes off, feet together and your arms hanging down by your side. When you feel like you are in balance, close your eyes and see how long you can stand with your right foot raised off the ground. Try to stand there as long as you can and stop the watch when you feel your right foot come down. Repeat this test on the other leg. If you can’t stand there for at least 10 seconds, you guessed it, we need to get to work on your balance. There are three components to balance: eyes, ears and proprioception (feel). Start as simple as standing on one leg with your eyes opened. Once you can hold that position for one minute, then you can advance to the next stage. Now perform the same move, but move your head from side to side slowly for one minute. Your final test will be to stand in place on one leg with your eyes closed for one minute. There are lots of fancy balance tools and equipment in the gym, but until you are able to master the basics of balance you should put them aside. As your balance improves, you will have more strength in your legs and stability in your swing. We will be happy to test your balance and if necessary, design a program of exercises that will improve your balance to prevent you from falling out of your shots.

Therapeutic Taping at the Fitness Center Our Exercise Physiologists, Derek Lemire and Doug Weary, have recently been studying, researching and now implementing the Therapeutic Taping technique at the Fitness Center. It is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. The taping technique has had amazing results and is used by Physical Therapists across the country. It is used for a variety of different reasons, such as injuries, prevention, posture, inflammation and muscular pain. Please take advantage of this cutting edge technique and schedule a time for Doug or Derek to help you.
