FRIENDS OF BENWICK
SCHOOL by Jess Woods During the Spring Term the Friends of Benwick School held several fundraising events, starting with the annual Valentines Disco held in the Village Hall. The event was well attended and followed in March by a Film Night. The Children were able to watch the popular Madagascar 3! All those that attended were given a selection of sweets to enjoy, and £41 was raised. The Easter Raffle was drawn during the Spring Term Assembly and the prizes were as follows Thomas Lacey x 2, Penny Wilbraham x 3, Leon x 2, Mr Maryon x 2, Ellis Briars, Connor McFadden, Vincent Phillips, Joseph Leaper, Emily Abey. All prizes were kindly donated by Mrs Tracey Phillips. A total of £85.50 was raised. The Tuck Shop is held during the last week of each half term after school in the School Canteen; this has become increasingly popular and regularly sells out, the most recent raised £31.70. On 19th April we held our first Spiritualist Evening in the School Canteen, it was well attended and had 4
the Psychic Barbara Price giving the readings. We raised £325 through tickets sales and the raffle. Many thanks to those who donated the raffle prizes. Now, turning to what is coming up this term, on 10th May we are holding our first May Masquerade Ball, we are hoping that all attending will come dressed in their finest clothes and wearing a mask. There will be refreshments including children’s cocktails, and a chocolate fountain, music as always will be provided by Stewart Green. Thursday 20th of June will be our regular Film Night, the film will be either Mamma Mia or Wreck it Ralph, held straight after school, the usual refreshments will be included in the ticket price. The main event for this term will be the Summer Fayre, held this year on the 13th July 11.00 – 2.00, many exciting stalls, activities and competitions are planned, including a Raffle, Chicken Show, Scavenger Hunt and Eating Competion! If you know anyone that would like a stall or would like to donate a raffle prize please contact Jenny Fell 677848 or Jess Wood 672972. Stalls are £8 a pitch, and are discounted for Benwick Community Groups to £5.•

PARISH COUNCIL by Tony Richardson The past year has been a memorable year, particularly given the success of the Queens Diamond Jubilee events & celebrations last June, which were supported by volunteer members from almost all of Benwicks community groups and attended by many residents of the village. A great time was had by all and we even made the front page of the local newspaper, I believe we ‘did Benwick proud’. In addition to the general business of the Council we have also been involved in a wide range of projects and initiatives this year, including working with Cambs County Council with the installation of the new footbridge, and securing a 20mph advisory speed zone outside the school through the minor highways improvements scheme which is due to be installed in the near future. We also saw the provision of the ‘Connection Bus’ drop-in youth facilities, supported by CCC and charitable organisations (which we are hoping will continue ongoing). Other notable highlights include the provision of new litter bins near the War Memorial and Bus stop, and 6
new grit bins which are to be installed shortly. Improvements have been made to the Cemetery maintenance standard following the appointment of a new contractor and agreement from Fenland District Council to improve standards at the old cemetery. There were also repairs made to the railings around the War Memorial carried out by Boon’s and Benwick in Bloom; and Royal Mail installed new slabs around the Doddington Rd Post Box. This year also saw the Parish Council providing a village Christmas Tree which we hope to make an annual event. Moving forward, we are working with Middle-Level in the provision of Flood Defences along Nene Parade and between the two bridges; it is hoped we will be able to provide additional railings outside the cemetery and improvements to the footpaths as part of this project. Working with FDC in improvements to the park and its facilities and with allotment holders to the appearance of Allotments and provide new fences for the plots. We are also working with Middle Level Watermen’s Club, ‘Circle of the
Fens’ Cycle Race Organisers and Village Groups to organise a weekend of celebrations for the opening of the new Bridge, anniversary of the mooring opening and to enjoy the cycle race (15th/16th June). We will also be working with the Residents Association and The Strict Baptists to explore ownership of the Baptist Cemetery to improve its appearance and use, and with local companies to reduce the impact of HGV traffic in the village. In addition to the above, many of you will have noticed that the Village Sign has been removed and is currently undergoing repairs as the main post was rotten. We have also received apologies from Balfour Beatty, who have advised us that the upgrades to the street lights will now be completed in June. Finances remain strong, with a surplus for the year of £2,467 carried over to reserves. I also recognise recent concerns regarding Council Tax increases, but the Benwick Parish Precept for 2013/14 remains the same as 2012/13 at £10,609. The increases are due primarily to the reduction of our Tax Base as a result of the recent changes in the Council Tax Benefits scheme. We will be reviewing this carefully when
setting the precept next year. Sadly I have to report that our Clerk, Mrs Kristine Poole is leaving us next month, after many years service and would like to wish her all the best for the future, her work has been much appreciated and thank you! Finally, I hope you will all come along and enjoy the events and celebrations in June, another chance for us all to get together! Invitations have been sent to all Benwick’s community groups to organise fund raising stalls and games and several are already involved in the planning.•

BRIDGES, BOATS & BIKES by Tony Richardson On Saturday 15th June from around 1pm, in conjunction with the Middle Level Watermans Club and various Village Groups, we will be staging the ‘Official Opening’ of the new bridge and also celebrating the anniversary of the mooring opening. There will be a BBQ, Bar, marquee, refreshments, stalls, games, displays and lots of boats, we are also hoping to hold the annual ‘duck race’ and possibly a ‘tug of war’ contest more details to follow soon. On Sunday 16th June, from around 12 o’clock we hope to again have a number of stalls, games, competitions for all ages, food, refreshments and displays, centred around the Five All’s and Village Hall, organised by various village groups, so that you can sit and enjoy the Cycle Race. MAJOR CYCLE RACE THROUGH BENWICK On Sunday June the 16th a major National sporting event will be passing through Benwick village centre. The Circuit of the Fens is a 125 mile long Cycle Race to be held over 6 laps of a fens circuit. Over 140 Elite riders from the UKs best domestic Professional and Semi Professional teams will compete for honours in the inaugural race. The race is likely to include riders from the London 2012 Olympic track team, a Tour de France Stage winner and Paris Roubaix winner. There will also be a support race for amateur riders taking place at the same time. As well as being the longest race in the UK, the flat exposed roads and fenland winds should make for some of the most exciting racing conditions in the country. For safety the race will be fully escorted by the police who are likely to hold the traffic for a short while as it comes through the village. There will be a sprint point adjacent to The Five Alls Public house which will be hotly contested. 10
All of the teams will be going flat out as they enter and pass through the high street before turning left onto Whittlesey Road. If you have any contacts in the equestrian community that may be planning to use this route between 12 and 4 pm please can you ask them to take great care or preferably plan their day so they avoid use of the roads during this time as we want to ensure both the safety of the cyclists and horse riders. The elite race will then move on to complete 6 laps of a town centre circuit in Whittlesey. We now have new volunteers helping at the Group. Cheryl Glowacki and Luke Ashman are new Assistant Scout Leaders for the Scout troop. Robert Taylor has taken over as Akela at the Cub Pack and Hollie Jackson as the Assistant Cub Leader (Raksha). Because of other commitments, we have had to move the Cubs meeting to Monday evenings. Beavers and Scouts still meet on Tuesdays. In addition, we welcome Mandi Papworth, Lee Boston, Katie Allen, Laura Hinde and Yvonne Baker as helpers for Beavers and Cubs, and Graham Stribley (a very experienced leader from March) is helping with the Scouts. We are taking the Scouts whitewater canoeing at Cardington on 22nd June, and are planning to take them gliding over the summer. Did you know children as young as 8 can go SCUBA diving? Neither did we until a couple of weeks ago; but now we plan to give both Cubs and Scouts the opportunity to give it a try! Other activities planned for the near future include stilt walking and unicycle riding and air rifle shooting. The Beavers are going to a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Duxford Air Museum on 12th May.
BENWICK SCOUT UPDATE by Rod Glen We have recently taken delivery of some archery equipment –bows of various sizes, 2 targets, arrows, arm protectors, etc. We will be teaching Beavers, Cubs and Scouts this exciting and challenging sport. The equipment will also be available for hire, dependent upon availability of the instructors. Due to changing work commitments the Group Chairman, Aidan McGarry, is stepping down from his role. We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic person to help manage the administrative functions for the Group and support the Leaders in delivering an exciting programme for the young people in the Group. BENWICK BRIDGE With the replacement bridge having now been completed I remembered an article in my collection of the opening of the Whittlesey Road bridge in 1938. “Considered to be one of the finest bridges erected by the County Council in the Isle of Ely for some time, the new bridge over the old course of the River Nene at Benwick is now complete.
has a centre span of 45ft. The cost of the whole scheme including the making of a new road to join the Doddington Highway is approximately £5,600 and the road works were carried out by direct labour. Grants towards the cost of the work were received from various sources, including the Middle Level and the Ministry of Transport. The road leading up to the bridge is approximately 250 yards in length and has on either side 15ft verges.“
This structure replaces the old wooden bridge which was considered unsafe for present day traffic and also makes a shorter approach to the Peterborough road cutting out a portion of the village.
In order to construct the bridge, it was necessary to demolish the Village Hall; which was agreed to by the Parish Council in return for £150 compensation. •

THE BENWICK LADIES CLUB by Brenda Richards The Benwick Ladies club had a great meeting in March, with an increase in attendance. Unfortunately, our April speaker was unable to join us but with improvised social activities we still had a good evening. As well as the monthly meetings, a group have also purchased tickets to see Macbeth at the George in

Huntingdon on June 28th. On May 20th the group are off to Wistow Wood to see all the bluebells, followed by a drink in Warboys. We depart from the Village Hall where everyone is to meet at 7pm. On June 17th at 7:30pm in the Church Room of the Village Hall we have a Strawberries and Cream Tea evening with wine or tea. On July 15th guest speaker Polly Howatt will be regaling us with stories and tails from the fens. •

For people who would like to hold a children’s birthday party in the Benwick Village Hall there is a standing charge of £30 for three hours on a Saturday afternoon from 2.00pm until 5.00pm which includes setting up and clearing up times. The hall is large enough for a bouncy castle to be hired and set up inside as is capable of seating over 100 people and there is a nice large kitchen with 5 burner s and wide oven, two sinks, fridge, microwave and 20lt urn for use. There is also a hatchway to the serving area which also doubles as a bar for adult events. Contact the booking clerk for further details on 677279. FORGET-ME-NOTS by Janet Fountain At the March meeting we were entertained by Caroline and Agnes who told us stories and poems by Pam Ayres. At the April meeting we entertained ourselves with a curling match and table games for the less active. On the 10th April 16 members and friends went to Guyhirn for two games of ten pin bowls followed by a light lunch. Toni Clarke was the overall winner. Our Birthday Party is being held on Thursday 2nd May when guests from Coates and Christchurch have been invited. Tom Kennedy from

Manea will be entertaining us after the meal. On Thursday, 6th June our speaker is Maria Carden who will bring her dog 'Blue' and tell us about dogs for the disabled. The competition is for any item beginning with the letter P. On Wednesday 22nd May we have an outing to Bury St. Edmunds, followed on June 5th with a trip to Turville, Bucks – the village where several films have been produced including Goodnight Mr Tom, Vicar of Dibley, Midsummer Murders and Foyl’es War! In practice we are regularly asked the question, ‘why does my lower back hurt?’. In this months article we are going to look at the 2 main culprits, the spinal joints and the spinal discs. The Lower back covers a much smaller area than we might think. The lower back forms the lowest curve in your spine, just above your hips. It consists of 5 named vertebrae L1-L5 (“L” meaning Lumbar). The apex (L3) and base (L5) [circled] are the most commonly injured sites, due to their dual role in providing the majority of movement in the lower back and bearing the majority of the upper body weight. The apex and base are therefore prone to strains from both excessive movement and compressional forces.
This is why you should take care before lifting a weight in a twisted position. Within these sites, it is the spinal disc’s and facet joint’s (see Fig 2) which are the structures that are most commonly strained. This is because: a) the facets joints create the movement in our spine, and b) the spinal discs absorb the majority of the weight and forces created by the upper body as well as the forces generated from the lower limb interacting with the ground. When strained, the muscles in this area will spasm or tense up in an attempt to protect the damaged area. This gives rise to the stiffness we all know so well! This stiffness also gives the sufferer a false impression that the problem is muscular, when it is nearly always deeper. As osteopaths we look to aid recovery by alleviating the stiffness through working on the muscles and the joints. If the stiffness is reduced the mobility of the spine improves meaning the flow of blood to the damaged area improves. A better blood flow aid healing of the damaged structure because blood contains all the substances the body needs to fix itself. We hope this has provided some useful information and next month we shall build on this. Until then, we wish you a great month of May and let’s hope for that sunshine we are long over due! •

We are really pleased to confirm that Mandy Lacey has now been selected as the permanent Pre-School Manager. Over the years Mandy has been a dedicated, hard working member of staff and we are very excited about the enhancements we know she is able to make to our pre-school setting. We have been concentrating our fundraising efforts to improve the technology within the setting, aiming to raise £750 to buy five Nabi tablets. We started the New Year with £223.99 in our fundraising pot, we have then been able to add the following:

SHOUT FOR EPILEPSY by Jenny Fell Some Benwick residents may recall back in 2005 the Fenland Citizen started started a campaign to raise funds to send Nikey Robinson of Doddington to swim with dolphins. We held various events in Benwick to raise funds for Nikey mainly through the school as her Mum was until recently a Teaching Assistant at the School. Nikey suffered with severe epilepsy and unfortunately on 21st March 2013 Nikey passed away at the age of 23. To show our support the school has decided to run a years fundraising campaign with Nikey's family, raising awareness and money for Epilepsy Action/SUDEP Action. Our campaign starts on Friday 17th May with a Family Bingo Night, doors open at 6pm with eyes down at 6.30pm. Bingo Booklets will be available at £1 each with line and full house prizes and a £50 cash prize flyer for £1 per entry. There will be Tea/Coffee/Squash with biscuits and cakes available at half time for a donation. We will have Epilepsy Action 28
merchandise available to buy at events such as wristbands, pens and trolley coin key rings. We are looking forward to meeting with the children that sit on the school council to arrange other events, firstly concentrating on National Epilepsy Week - Monday 20th - Friday 24th May. BYGONE BENWICK It is well known that for such a small village, Benwick once hosted a wealth of public houses. At one time, there were 7 along the High Street. Over the next few editions, we will look back at some of these old public houses. At the top of the High Street stood “The Boot and Slipper” built in the early 1800’s, and converted from a thatched building to slate roof in 1850 it made the local papers in 1934 when a cellar was built underneath it – no mean feat with the subsoil below. At other times it was also called “Boot and Shoe” and “The Benwick Hotel”, and was known locally as the Top House. In 1890 an extract from the Parish Magazine written by Benwick’s reverend William H Wood tells the story of a group of Cambridge University Students who stayed in the Boot and Slipper under the landlady Mrs. Wing. They were so pleased with their entertainment and amused with the sign which was just “The Boot and Slipper” painted in large plain letters; that one of them sent Mrs Wing a new sign, a Boot & Slipper painted on a board with a scroll around the top bearing the a well-known Latin proverb, which 30
translated to “Let not the cobbler go beyond his last”. The sign was finished with a short verse “Stay weary traveller stay, and Mrs Wing to quench your thirst a foaming draught will bring”
The Boot and Slipper was home to regular meetings of village groups, and even the Parish Council at times. It was in front of the Boot and Slipper that at the start of World War One the territorials came to call up men for war.
Until 1957 it was the only pub which had a wine and spirit licence, which meant that all the other pubs could only sell beer. The Boot and Slipper was demolished in 1975. •
BENWICK SPORTS by Mark Tyler We are all looking forward to the Village Sports Day planned for Saturday 6th July. This will be held on the school sports field from 1pm. We are looking for any volunteers willing to help run the event on the day so any parents or other adults wishing to lend a hand just let us know beforehand. We will be contacting local businesses directly to see whether they would like to advertise in the
'matchday programme' or directly sponsor some of the trophy events. If you are able to help us in this way it is very much appreciated, and helps to keep this event running. We will have the usual stalls and sideshows to amuse you between races including the barbecue serving hot and cold drinks as well as food. We look forward to seeing you all there, supporting the children and strengthening links within the community, or if you wish to attend our next meeting this is Sunday May 18th at 2b High Street.•

FRIENDS OF BENWICK SCHOOL MONTHLY DRAW The Friends of Benwick School (FOBS), a registered charity run by parents and teachers of Benwick Primary School with the aim of enhancing the schoolchildren’s education, runs a monthly draw. It allows you, your family and your friends the opportunity to win £100 first prize and where funds allow a second prize of up to £50 depending on how much is collected in that month. One entry in the draw costs £1 and each person can have as many entries as they wish. Winners are posted in the school and on the Village Hall notice board and printed in the Benwick Bugle. Members may pay monthly, annually or anything in between and these amounts are generally collected by one of the “friends”. There are currently about 150 regular members of the draw and more participants would be very welcome. 75% of money collected each month is given as prize money and the remaining 25% is donated to the school by FOBS. This contributes to the children receiving additional benefits which the school would not normally be able to provide such as educational trips, extra equipment or improvements to facilities.
