Where do doctors go to treat their own pain? Dr. Robert Sidlow MD, MBA—Internist, New York, NY “As a board-certified internist who has been in practice for over 13 years, I spend much of my time attempting to alleviate the pain and suffering of my patients. As a clinician, one of the biggest challenges I face is helping my patients deal with musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes-those alltoo-common, yet frequently debilitating ailments caused by bad backs, pinched nerves, arthritis, and the like. Unfortunately, much of what I have to offer my patients boils down to the following: take a pain pill, stretch if you can, wait, and hope for the best. After a failed trial of "conservative" therapy a call might go out to the orthopedic surgeon for assistance; a truly satisfactory result is not common. The simple fact is that physicians are not well trained to deal with musculoskeletal pain, and patients can suffer as a result. Thankfully, my views on this topic have been turned completely upside down since I have personally discovered Dr. Jonathan Donath's outstanding practice. After beginning a vigorous exercise regime, I started to experience awful neck and upper back pain, accompanied by numbness and tingling down my left arm and fingers. For weeks I tried to nurse the pain with non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, but the pain persisted and got to the point that I was almost unable to work, sleep, or most importantly, play guitar. I was literally in tears from the excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon diagnosed a herniated disc and pinched nerve in my neck and offered to decompress it with an operation. In desperation I called Dr. Donath instead. My visit to Dr. Donath's office was an outstanding experience. He spent about an hour with me and combined multiple modalities to fix the herniated disc in my neck: deep massage, active release techniques, traditional manipulation, cold therapy, and finally spinal decompression. After that first hour with Dr. Donath my pain had decreased from a 10/10 down to a manageable 4/10, and I was able to comfortably move my head and neck. That very night I was able to play guitar again. Two days later I went back for another series of treatments and the pain decreased even further. After about five days the pain was absolutely gone. Unbelievable! Since then he has used the same wonderful techniques to help me overcome painful bouts of sciatica as well. My own patients and family members have become "believers" in Dr. Donath's abilities as well--- the results he achieves are real and lasting. He is my go to guy for the majority of musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain syndromes that I now realize are truly treatable.”

THE NECK & BACK PAIN SOLUTION Dr. Donath’s new book is available at Amazon.com or a free E-book can be downloaded from his website.

Dr. Gregory Galano MD, Orthopedic Surgeon White Plains and New York, NY

As a board-certified sports medicine orthopedist, I see many patients with activity-related joint, back, and neck pain. Often I am confronted with patients that have exhausted other conservative forms of treatment, but fail to have lasting relief. Many of these patients would like to avoid surgery or may not even be good candidates for surgical procedures. Dr. Donath has proved extremely helpful to this patient population. He spends a great deal of time listening and examining the patient in order to formulate an individualized treatment plan. He offers innovative treatment options which include chiropractic, active release therapy, Graston technique, non-operative spinal decompression, and even exercise and nutrition programs. Having shared many patients with Dr. Donath, I have seen firsthand the positive interventions he has made in their daily lives and activities. They express the utmost respect and confidence in his clinical evaluation and knowledge, as well as his treatment techniques. I have no reservations recommending him highly to any patient I think may benefit from his services. Dr. Annebeth Litt, MD Internist, White Plains, NY

“Dr. Donath is amazing. As an internist, I have to decide between traditional western medicine and chiropractic care for my patients with back pain and other joint-related complaints. Dr. Donath's thorough and comprehensive approach to care allows my patients to get relief faster and less invasively. The result is invariably positive. One of my patients said he got his life and golf game back after seeing Dr. Donath. Another said that he was able to get rid of a pain she had for over 5 years in just a few sessions. I can confirm his success first-hand: Dr. Donath relieved my chronic pain with multiple techniques: manipulation, spinal decompression, vitamins and supplements, exercise and stretching. His hands-on approach and love of his work is reflected by the excellent results he gets. I continue to send my friends, family and patients to Dr. Donath because I know he gets results.” Dr. Pankaj Jain—Pediatric Cardiologist New York, NY “I really don't have words to express my feelings about the care I got in the last 3 months. I was almost handicapped, living with terrible pain all the time, crippling my day to day life. I am a medical doctor and work in a hospital with all sorts of amazing physicians, but after seeing a physical therapist, getting epidural steroids injections, many orthopedists and neurosurgeons, finally my destination lead me to see Dr Jonathan Donath. With great skepticism, I lied down for spinal decompression therapy. It was unbelievable that after only two initial sessions, my radiating pain down my leg had almost disappeared. Gradually, I started getting better, started doing exercises that they gave me midway through the treatment. Now, I am doing all my daily activities without any pain. I highly recommend Dr Jonathan for any problems related to the musculoskeletal system, you will definitely feel at home and will get better.”

Dr. Eugene Dinkevich MD—Division of General Pediatrics SUNY Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY “I am a pediatrician and in my work, I have to bend down a lot and I'm constantly lifting kids. I usually have one to three bad flare ups of low back pain every year. When my back would "go out", I could barely walk to the bathroom and would have to lie down in bed for a few days. I have tried everything: doing nothing and "toughing it out", muscle relaxants, physical therapy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage, and even painful steroid injections. Nothing worked. When I moved to Westchester, I met Dr. Jonathan Donath. In just a couple of sessions with Dr. Donath, the pain completely disappeared. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't have believed it. During my last flare up, I was expecting to be on my back for 2-3 days and in pain for 2 weeks. Instead, after one session with Dr. Donath, I was able to walk; two more sessions and I was fine. I could walk, bend down and I had almost no pain. Since that last back episode, Dr. Donath has helped me with my tendonitis in my right hand and with my chronic knee problems. I recommend Dr. Donath to everyone with back, muscle or joint pain. Even if you have not had relief with other treatments and other chiropractors, give Dr. Donath a chance. I did and he changed my life.” Dr. Harold Weissman, MD Ophthalmic Surgeon Lenox Hill Hospital New York, NY “My wife actually went to Dr. Donath before I did. She was experiencing terrible neck pain and literally could not move her neck in any direction without excruciating pain. It was so bad that initially she was unable to drive herself to Dr. Donath’s office. After only two spinal decompression treatments by Dr. Donath, she was able to resume driving. Following a few weeks of treatment, she was pain free and her range of motion was back to normal. A few years later, I started having arm and elbow pain. I tweaked something in my arm while working out and anti-inflammatory medication and pain killers did not help. The problem affected my ability to function as an eye surgeon. I saw Dr. Donath who diagnosed my condition as lateral epicondylitis (more commonly known as tennis elbow). He treated me utilizing Active Release Techniques and I improved almost immediately. He also gave me numerous exercises to do at home. After three visits to his office, my pain was completely gone. I highly recommend Dr. Donath to my family, friends, and patients who experience any sort of musculoskeletal pain.

Thousands raise over $1M to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Westchester County Empowers Community To Take Action

The American Cancer Society projects that 20,000 residents came together on Sunday, October 16 at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, for the 22nd Annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and raised more than $1.2M to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer. “Today’s event was a moving example of passion in action,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Manager for the Society. “Our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk ensures no one faces breast cancer alone by bringing the community together, funding innovative breast cancer research, promoting education and risk reduction and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.”

The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, PC, achieves impressive results for clients in the areas of elder law, trusts and estates

Ely J. Rosenzveig and his son, Ariel, are proud to lead a respected elder law firm in White Plains serving families throughout the tri-state area. However, the family feel extends past father and son. The law firm of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, P.C treats every client like family. “My dad and I are very involved in our clients’ lives, especially during difficult times,” Ariel Rosenzveig said. “We become close to them and we enjoy the relationships that we build. We value those relationships and are always attentive to our clients to help them with all of their needs. We take special pride in being there for our clients and their families through thick and thin.” Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates practices in all areas of elder law, including trust and estate planning, administration, and litigation, tax counsel, asset protection and special needs planning, Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security disability benefits, guardianships, long term care planning, Medicaid spousal recovery claims, and Medicaid lien resolutions. Father and son pride themselves on an unyielding commitment to the advocacy of their clients’ interests. Estate planning is one of the most important steps any person can take to make sure that their final property and health care wishes are honored, and that loved ones are provided for in their absence. A comprehensive estate plan can resolve a number of legal questions that arise whenever anyone dies. The firm has achieved impressive results for clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from getting Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues a claim for reimbursement for Medicaid benefits provided from the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse.

“Our firm has a thorough understanding of Medicaid and the experience to advocate aggressively and effectively for you and your family,” said Ely Rosenzveig, who has been an attorney for nearly thirty (30) years. “It is very rewarding work and we work tirelessly for our clients.” Elder law is very important. Appropriate estate and asset-protection planning can help preserve assets, reduce taxes, and help individuals qualify for Medicaid. As you or your loved one grows older, the quality of care you receive becomes increasingly important. At some point, it becomes necessary to make plans for the future to make sure that your needs and desires are met. When this time comes, it is important to enlist the experience of Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, so the process of planning for the future is stress-free for your family. This can be critical in the process of maintaining the well-being of you or your loved one. At Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates, father and son have the opportunity to help clients plan across the span of many years. Often, it leads to advising multiple generations of the family, which Ely and Ariel Rosenzveig find rewarding. Over the course of time, they help clients as their lives and needs change, from naming the guardians of their minor children in their Wills, to planning for retirement, to protecting assets when in need of a skilled nursing facility or home care. Ely J. Rosenzveig & Associates builds a relationship with clients, which is built upon years of assisting them, often in difficult times in their lives, and helping them move beyond those times and provide them with peace of mind and financial security. Our firm is certainly proud to build these types of relationships with families such as yours.

Ten Tips for

Healthy

Holiday Eating

The holiday season is a time to celebrate with family and friends. Unfortunately, for many it also becomes a time for over-eating and weight gain. According to the National Institutes of Health, holiday eating can result in an extra pound or two every year. Over a lifetime, holiday weight gain can really add up. The holidays don't have to mean weight gain. Focus on a healthy balance of food, activity, and fun. By implementing a few simple tips you can stay healthy through the holiday season. 1. Be realistic. Don’t try to lose pounds during the holidays, instead try to maintain your current weight.

2. Plan time for exercise. Exercise helps relieve holiday stress and prevent weight gain. A moderate and daily increase in exercise can offset increased eating. Try 10- or 15-minute walks twice a day.

3. Don’t skip meals. Before leaving for a party, eat a light snack like raw vegetables or a piece of fruit to curb your appetite. You will be less tempted to over-indulge. 4. Survey party buffets before filling your plate. Choose your favorite foods and skip your least favorite. Include vegetables and fruits to keep your plate balanced.

5. Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed. Savor your favorite holiday treats while eating small portions. Sit down, get comfortable, and enjoy.

6. Be careful with beverages. Alcohol can lessen inhibitions and induce overeating; non-alcoholic beverages can be full of calories and sugar.

7. If you overeat at one meal go light on the next. It takes 500 calories per day (or 3,500 calories per week) above your normal/maintenance consumption to gain one pound. It is impossible to gain weight from one piece of pie!

8. Take the focus off food. Plan non-edible projects like making wreaths or a gingerbread house. Try serving a holiday meal to the community or going on a walking tour of decorated homes.

9. Bring your own healthy dish to a holiday gathering. Your family and friends will love the idea so make enough to share!

10. Practice Healthy Holiday Cooking. Preparing favorite dishes lower in fat and calories will help promote healthy holiday eating.

Enjoy the holidays, plan a time for activity, incorporate healthy recipes into your holiday meals, and don't restrict yourself from enjoying your favorite holiday foods. In the long run, your mind and body will thank you.

Westchester Medical Center Health Network’s COACH brings health services and education to the community

Westchester Medical Center Health Network’s (WMCHealth) new Community Outreach vehicle will make a stop at the Taste of the Hudson Valley in Poughkeepsie as part of a larger effort to make health services more accessible to the community. The COACH, or Community Outreach and Community Health, vehicle was launched this summer and has already appeared at a number of community events, said Mecca Santana, Westchester Medical Center Vice President of Diversity and Community Relations. Santana said the 12-foot plus recreational vehicle currently acts as a health education center, traveling to community events. She said WMCHealth’s ultimate plan is to further outfit the vehicle so it is able to provide additional health services for the community. “We’ve had a tremendous response to the COACH and many requests for it at community events, the Kidz Expo in Goshen being the most recent.’’ said Santana. “It is our hope that by using the COACH, we can bring more health education and needed services to the community at large as well as to seniors and underserved populations who may not have the ability to travel to get health services.’’ WMCHealth commissioned artist Charles Fazzino, famous for his threedimensional pop art, to provide the artwork depicting Hudson Valley towns and regions. The COACH will be at the Taste of the Hudson Valley at the Grandview on the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. The epicurean festival, now in its 27th year, features more than 100 wine and food pairings from the world’s top wine producers and the finest culinary establishments and purveyors in the Hudson Valley and beyond. Proceeds from the event benefit the programs and services offered at MidHudson Regional Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network. For more information about the event, please call (845) 431-8707.

The COACH has already appeared at Suffern Day, White Plains Wellness Week, The Healing Half along the Bronx River Parkway, O+ in Kingston, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Purchase and most recently, the Kidz Expo in Goshen. Community groups interested in having the COACH at upcoming events, should please call (914) 493-7887 or please e-mail Community@WMCHealth.org. photo provided

Westchester ‘Hair Coach’ says hair loss doesn’t have to be hopeless By Dale McKnight Hair loss – as well as thin, brittle or otherwise damaged hair - is no laughing matter. And with an estimated 80 million Americans suffering from hair loss and related problems, the situation is more common than many people realize. “August is National Hair Loss Awareness month - a perfect time to educate people that they don’t have to suffer in silence,” says Diane DeMatteis of Westchester. Diane is a licensed cosmetologist with more than two decades of experience in providing men, women and children with effective ways to combat their hair-care concerns. She is affiliated with the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa in Mount Kisco, where she offers her Pro-Active Hair Care services. Diane provides personalized consultations and effective treatments for damaged, dry, lifeless hair. She also addresses issues related to thinning hair or hair loss (also known as alopecia). She has studied with notables such as Dr. Alan Bauman, a Florida-based surgeon and expert in the field of trichology – a branch of dermatology that deals with the study of hair and scalp health. A member of the American Hair Loss Council, Diane also completed the first-ever Certified Hair Coach program in the U.S., based on a training process launched by Dr. Bauman. “Studying and educating others about the scalp has always been my passion,” she says. “My motto is: ‘A healthy scalp is a landscape to healthy hair.’” She adds: “People know that taking care of their gums is important for healthy teeth. It’s the same for the scalp – for healthy hair, you need a healthy scalp.” With a simple scalp analysis, she can determine the overall health of the scalp, and recommend a customized treatment to help each client look and feel their best. What triggers hair problems? “Some causes are genetic,” she says. “And most people don’t know that hereditary hair loss is manageable. The sooner you address it, the better the results.” She adds: “Other factors like chemicals and products we put on our hair, chlorine from pools, allergies to certain substances, or the environment can also play a role. Each client’s case is different, which is what makes my work so interesting.”

When treating clients, Diane uses various patented hair care products, therapeutic scalp massage and, in some cases, a series of FDA-cleared laser therapy treatments to stimulate hair growth. “Low-light laser therapy is good for certain scalp conditions such as some types of dermatitis and early stages of thinning hair,” notes Diane, who underwent special training to use the instruments. “It can help increase density and rejuvenate hair. It’s not a magic wand that magically regrows a full head of hair, but it makes a noticeable improvement in many cases.” Starting treatment for hair problems sooner rather than later will increase the chances of better results, she adds. “Restoring your hair can have an amazing effect on your life. From boosting your confidence to increasing your attractiveness, you’ll experience a world of difference when you do.” Diane can be reached at 914-222-0731.

A great opportunity to further your career

Do you have a dead end job where there are few, if any, opportunities for promotion? If this describes you, there are still opportunities to make a career transition to pursue the job you've always wanted. To make a career change, you might have to obtain more education. Whether you enjoy learning or want a higher paying job, continuing education can be pursued at anytime during one's working life. In fact, continuing education can open up previously closed doors or lead to better job opportunities. Continuing education usually refers to college courses or other vocational training obtained by older adults or working professionals. This has been corroborated by research, which finds that students in continuing education programs are usually older adults or working professionals.

The following benefits can be derived from obtaining more education:

Those with jobs who obtain graduate degrees improve promotion opportunities and can qualify for higher wages. It is often required to complete specialized training to quality for certain jobs, such as management or administration positions. Obtaining additional education can also increase one's marketability in the job market. Continuing education is the way to develop new skills or knowledge necessary for a career transition.

Rising Numbers According to the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, demand for continuing education for adults aged 35 or older should grow by 7 percent until 2016. Economic conditions are one of the main reasons driving demand for continuing education, and many people enroll in continuing education programs during recessions. Likewise, during recessions, many workers seek to improve skills to remain hired or find new job opportunities. Some people enroll in college because they love learning, while some do so to qualify for certain jobs. However, many people feel unable to re-enroll in college since they must keep their full-time jobs. Working professionals wanting to keep their jobs but obtain more education can enroll in online continuing education programs. People can return to school at any age. In fact, many older adults and working professionals are taking advantage of the opportunities provided by returning to college or earning additional degrees.

Source://www.educationcorner.com/benefits-of-continuing-education.html

Continuing education is a great way to learn about subjects of personal interest. Courses taken do not necessarily have to be related to an individual's job. Obtaining more education can improve one's image in family or social circles.

Obtaining additional education or completing a college program can enhance self-image and have positive eects on other aspects of a person's life.

Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center resident granted wish from Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley

On October 5, 2016, Xin Mandy, a resident of the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center, shared in a memorable day thanks to our friends at Make-AWish Hudson Valley. Xin Mandy, who is a fan of pop music, had a special party hosted at the Pediatric Center for the release of “Hey Mandy,” a song that was created just for her by Nashville artist Doran Robin. Robin performed the song live at the event for the first time to an audience of Xin Mandy’s family, caregivers and fellow residents. “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Doran Robin in making Xin Mandy’s wish come true. Since Doran is a ‘Wish Recipient’ himself, he knows firsthand the power of a wish and the impact it has on a ‘Wish Child’ and their family,” said Denise D’Amico, Vice President of Program Services at Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley. “He made sure to incorporate all of Xin Mandy’s unique qualities that make her so special and ‘Hey Mandy’ truly reflects that.” “Mandy showed how much she enjoyed the concert by her smiles and by moving to the music as she listened,” said Deena DeMarco, a speech language pathologist at the Yonkers campus of the John A. Coleman School. “Mandy loves to dance and when she likes music she wiggles her body. She did a lot of wiggling, song after song,” DeMarco laughed. D’Amico agreed. “It was a pretty powerful moment for me to see Xin Mandy dancing along with a room full of her friends and classmates as Doran sang ‘Hey Mandy.’ I’ll never forget it,” D’Amico said. Abraham Almanza, Volunteer Manager at Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley, was moved, as well. “You could just tell that Mandy was having a great wish experience from the moment she entered the room,” he said.

“Seeing her mom and dad smile from ear to ear throughout the whole experience really confirmed for me that we hit the heart of her wish.” “Mandy completely understood that this was her party!” said Dr. Joann Galley, Director of School Psychological Services at the John A. Coleman School. “She was dressed in a gorgeous outfit, surrounded by her loving family members and serenaded with some of her favorite music, including a song just for her,” Dr. Galley continued. “This day will serve as a memory for her that is filled with light, music and love.”

After Robin’s set, Xin Mandy and her party guests mingled and enjoyed sweet treats and refreshments. “We want to give Mandy experiences to enjoy,” said Dr. Galley. “She clearly loves shopping, dressing up, music and parties. She also loves being with her family and with her caregivers,” she added. “It is our goal to give Mandy as much as possible and we are thankful to MakeA-Wish for their partnership in making this amazing day happen for this very special young lady.” Learn more about the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center at www.setonpediatric.org

Life Settlement – Is it Right for You…? By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC

Life insurance provides solutions to meet various financial needs. Over time, however, circumstances can change and with them the need for insurance. In fact, nearly 98% of all term life insurance policies never mature in a claim. Life Settlements allow policyholders an option not previously available.

A “Life Settlement” is a lump sum payment to the owner of a life insurance policy by one of many funding sources in exchange for the ownership of the policy. Never before have non-terminal policyholders been able to receive capital in excess of their policy’s cash or surrender value to increase their cash flow.

Generally, anyone over age 65 who has $100,000 or more in life insurance coverage that is beyond the period of contestability may qualify for a Life Settlement. Other factors considered in the negotiations are the policy’s cash surrender values and the cost of premiums. A basic principle to remember is that the older the age of the insured and/or the more health complications that exist, the higher the settlement.

The fundamentals of the Life Settlement transaction have technically been around since 1989 in the form of “viatical settlements”. Individuals at any age can qualify for a viatical settlement if they have a chronic or terminal illness such as Cancer or HIV. Viatical Settlements have always been contingent upon the health of the insured, whereas Life Settlements are based primarily upon the age of the insured. In most states, a terminally ill senior applicant will need to use a licensed Viatical Broker and/or Funding Source, in order to abide by state rules and regulations and to retain the tax-exempt status on the settlement.

Example: An 80 year old woman owns a $1,000,000 universal life insurance policy with an annual premium of $26,860 and a cash surrender value of $14,509. In this case, the owner sold her life insurance policy for 8X the cash surrender value or $115,545. Now she is free to stop paying all future premiums and use that money for other necessities that are more important at this point in her life. Please note that often individuals are able to sell a portion of the death benefit for cash as well as retaining a significant permanent death benefit for final expenses with no future premiums being required.

According to industry reports, Life Settlement proceeds are tax-free up to the cost basis (premiums paid since policy inception). They are taxed as ordinary income from basis to cash surrender value and proceeds above the cash surrender value are taxed as capital gains. We recommend that all applicants consult their tax advisor to address any tax concerns.

Once the Life Settlement change of ownership has been recorded with the insurance company and the policy owner has received their money, the Life Settlement Funding Source will continue to pay premiums for the life of the insured. Most types of life insurance qualify including Whole Life, Universal Life, Convertible Term Life and Survivorship Life. Keystone Financial Advisors provides this appraisal free of charge and there is no obligation to accept a settlement at any time.

For more information about Life Settlements and Life Insurance planning please call Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC at 914-682-2190 or toll free at 877-676-9900. Andrew is certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC) from the Corporation for Long-Term Care Certification, Inc. Andrew is a member in good standing of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), which is the premier Association of financial professionals nationally. Protecting seniors and family assets – with expertise and compassion Healthcare News - Westchester December, 2016

By Dale McKnight, Healthcare Correspondent

Elder-care planning can be complicated, timeconsuming and emotional for everyone involved. No matter whether a family is dealing with medical or housing issues for a senior, or tackling the details of setting up a financial trust or other estate planning, it’s vital to work with a professional who is well-versed in the intricacies of elder law and offers personalized service to create a long-term elder-care plan that’s best for you or your loved one. “One of the key factors is asset protection, and it’s not a simple topic,” says attorney Olga Berde Mahl, managing partner of Olga Berde Mahl & Associates in New Rochelle. “For instance, many families have heard that assisted-living facilities may require a five-year look-back period regarding a person’s assets,” she says. “But they may not know that an asset protection plan can be created that avoids the need of placing a senior in a nursing home and dissipating family assets, with only a 30-day financial lookback period.”

Wisely structured asset protection can help assure that a senior remains living safely at home, while receiving top-notch care. It may also permit them to keep as much of their hard-earned money and property as possible, with some, or most, of their care costs paid for by the government. Olga Berde Mahl & Associates offers supportive elder-care planning advice that’s coupled with extensive, hands-on experience. Their services range from wills, health-care directives and powers of attorney to advance or emergency planning, trusts, and Medicare or Medicaid issues. “We also work with families in real estate matters and business-law issues, such as how having a family-owned business might affect your estate plan,” she says. Their legal team includes a knowledgeable lawyer, a licensed clinical social worker to assist in Medicaid filing/approval matters and homecare benefits assessments, plus an experienced, compassionate staff to serve clients.

“It’s important to put the necessary elder-planning steps in motion as early as possible to avoid possible complications in the future,” Berde Mahl says. “Ideally, it should be considered before problems become too extensive. So don’t put it off - time is definitely of the essence when it comes to elder-care and estate planning.” Olga Berde & Associates is located at 271 North Avenue, Suite 917, in New Rochelle, with a satellite office in New York City. They also work with clients in other areas of Westchester, as well as Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, and Nassau counties; the firm also serves families in other parts of the U.S. and internationally. For more information about their extensive elder-law, real estate, business and other legal services, contact Olga Berde Mahl & Associates at 914-336-2080. What are Crohn’s & Colitis? Healthcare News - Westchester December, 2016

PAGE 35

Learning that you or your loved one has been diagnosed with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis may fill you with anxiety, concern, and lots of questions. It’s important to begin learning all that you can about what Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis is so that you can better understand these conditions and learn how to manage its symptoms. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both major categories of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). IBD affects an estimated 1.6 million Americans. These chronic diseases tend to run in families and they affect males and females equally. While IBD can affect anyone, Caucasians are more likely than other ethnic groups to have IBD.The diseases are especially prevalent in Jews of European descent. African Americans and Hispanics in the United States are increasingly affected. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract and may affect any part from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition limited to the colon, otherwise known as the large intestine.

Shared Symptoms of Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis It is often difficult to diagnose which form of IBD a patient is suffering from because both Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis cause similar symptoms. Symptoms related to inflammation of the GI tract: • Diarrhea • Rectal bleeding • Urgent need to move bowels • Abdominal cramps and pain • Sensation of incomplete evacuation • Constipation (can lead to bowel obstruction)

General symptoms that may also be associated with IBD: • Fever • Loss of appetite • Weight Loss • Fatigue • Night sweats • Loss of normal menstrual cycle

Both illnesses do have one strong feature in common. They are marked by an abnormal response by the body’s immune system. The immune system is composed of various cells and proteins. Normally, these protect the body from infection. In people with Crohn’s disease, however, the immune system reacts inappropriately. However, in people suffering from IBD, the immune system reacts inappropriately, mistaking benign or beneficial cells and bacteria for harmful foreign substances. When this happens, your immune system can do harm to your gastrointestinal tract and produce the symptoms of IBD.

“Back Pain Technology Cheats Mother Nature

After helping hundreds of Westchester County herniated disc sufferers eliminate their pain, Local Doctor explains how…

Helps Herniated Discs Heal Naturally… In As Little As 25 Minutes!”

At Last! Westchester County Doctor Offers Technology That Doesn’t Just End SEVERE Pain From Herniated Discs, But Helps Your Body To Start Rebuilding Them… As Fast As Humanly Possible! Best Part: You can check it all out for FREE if you like! There is no doubt… technology has made all of our lives better… and easier. Just about every miraculous medical cure and comfort of modern living can be attributed to amazing breakthroughs in technology. Heck, laser eye surgery can give people who are almost as blind as a bat perfect 20/20 vision. How amazing is that? That’s why it’s no surprise that technology might be able to solve your back and neck pain from herniated/bulging discs or sciatica… for good. Here is why: Back and neck pain can be devastating. And nothing is worse than going to doctor after doctor… trying treatment after treatment… spending money you can’t afford… and still suffering in pain. That’s why… I bet you would love to instantly end your pain… without any risk what-so-ever… and have it never come back for the rest of your life? Well, that might NOT be so easy. But, what if there was a wonderful advancement in technology that, with a handful of simple, non-invasive treatments, could possibly have you out of pain and on your way to healing naturally? Better yet, what if this technology could possibly heal your herniated/bulging discs (instead of cutting it out like surgery) so you have the best chance to live pain-free and do all the things you want and love to do? And what if this technology was: • FDA cleared! • Proven safe and effective! • Allows your herniated discs to heal naturally without the risky and dangerous side effects of surgery! • Relieves pain fast… in some cases in as little as 25 minutes! Well, guess what? There is such technology and there is a very good chance it can help you… like it has alof ready helps thousands herniated/bulging disc and sciatica sufferers all around the country… No Matter How Bad Your Pain Is, How Long You’ve Been Suffering Or How Many Other Treatments And Doctors Have Failed You! Don’t laugh. It’s really true. Here’s proof…

When you have a herniated disc, compressive forces cause your spinal bones to come together… basically squashing your disc. The space in between your bones decreases and the soft, jello-like disc material leaks out. This disc material that leaks out is called a herniated disc and can cause severe pain, numbness and tingling in your neck, back, arms or legs when the herniation pushes into and “pinches” a nerve. So it makes sense, if you could slightly pull the spinal bones apart… that would open up the space, take the pressure off the disc, the disc off the nerve and solve the problem. Right? But the only problem is… how do you do that? For years and years, doctors have been trying to do it with traction. But traction has been proven ineffective and often very painful. Why? Traction doesn’t work because when you have a herniated or bulging disc, the area is injured and when you try to move, your muscles go into spasm. Spasm is your body’s way of trying to protect you from causing further injury. That’s why traction hurts so much. As soon as the traction starts… your muscles overprotect the area and spasm. But the good news is: Now there is technology that out-smarts your body’s natural spasm reaction. In other words: It fools mother nature! This technology is called nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSSD) and here’s how it works… NSSD is very different from plain traction because it has advanced computer technology that actually senses your spinal muscles. When it starts to gently pull, it immediately knows when your muscles start to contract and it stops pulling. As soon as your muscles relax, it starts pulling again. The amazing thing is: the computer senses your muscles contraction so early… you don’t even feel what is going on. Which means you never feel any pain! In fact, the only thing most patients feel is… RELIEF!!! But the best part is: NSSD is able to gently separate your spinal bones which, in many cases, actually sucks the herniated disc material back into the disc where it belongs! This takes away your pain and allows your herniated and bulging discs to heal naturally!

And check this out: Treatments are pleasant and simple. All you have to do is lie on your back, listen to your favorite music, read a magazine… or… take a nap! The wonderful technology does everything while you simply RELAX the pain away! To sum up NSSD: • For most patients it is 100% painless… in fact many patients actually fall asleep during treatment! • Works fast! Most patients get relief after a handful of treatments – some after the very first! • Is non-invasive so it does not have the dangerous risks of surgery! • Gets to the root cause of the problem and helps it heal naturally! Isn’t modern technology wonderful? And wouldn’t you like to… Give This Great Technology A Try… For Free? If you would, there’s great news. There is a Doctor located at 222 Westchester Ave. Suite 405 in White Plains who has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this wonderful technology and has been treating herniated/bulging disc and sciatica patients with incredible success. His name is Dr. Jonathan Donath DC, MS and he is so excited about the results he’s been getting, he would like to share it with as many pain sufferers as possible. But There Is A Catch… There’s always a catch... isn’t there? Even though this technology has helped a majority of the patients Dr. Donath has treated… it is not a wonder cure and it does not help everyone.

On the right: healthy disc. Center: Herniated disc with soft disc material leaking out. On the left: Herniated disc material compressing or “pinching” nerve.

For that reason, Dr. Donath does a complete examination on every potential patient and only accepts you if he feels you are most likely to get the pain relief and outcome you are looking for. Dr. Donath’s Special Deal For You! Because the economy is so bad and Dr. Donath wants to help you if possible, he is offering the first 17 people who respond to this article a free consultation and NSSD qualification examination. And if you qualify for NSSD treatments, Dr. Donath will also give you one treatment for FREE! And if you do not qualify, Dr. Donath will help you find the best option for you. That’s why, if you suffer with pain from a herniated/bulging disc or sciatica you should call 914-259-8104 right now. When April answers the phone, simply tell her you would like your free non-surgical spinal decompression consultation and examination. If you are one of the first 17, she will schedule you within the next few days. If you are in a lot of pain or already scheduled for surgery, tell April and she will be sure to get you in immediately. Maybe even today.

On right: Herniated disc with spinal bones “squished” together. Center: NSSD slightly pulls the spinal bones apart, opens up the disc space and allows herniated material to move back into the disc. Left: Herniated material completely back in center of disc allows the disc to heal naturally. Your consultation and examination should take about 60 minutes. During this time you can get all of your questiones answered in a warm and friendly environment. You will know exactly what’s causing your pain and the best possible way to solve it. Dr. Donath will explain to you all your possible options along with his recomendations so you can make the best choice for YOU.

Why Limited To 17? Dr. Donath has limited the number he will accept right now to 17 because he does not believe patients should wait and they should also get the quality personal attention they deserve. When you go for your free visit, I’m sure you will see how unique and pleasant the experience is. It’s nice to be treated like a person and not a number or based on insurance coverage. It’s also nice to know exactly what’s causing your pain and how to relieve it as fast as possible. Dr. Donath’s favorite cases are the one’s that were able to cancel back surgery after only a handful of treatments. Dr. Donath also loves when a herniated disc patient that is in excruciating pain and thinks they’ve tried everything, lays down on the NSSD table, takes a 25 minute nap… and… wakes up with all their pain GONE! Just imagine how it would feel to have all your pain finally gone. Imagine going to bed and being able to sleep the entire night through… … and waking up refreshed and energized… ready to take on the brand new day – without the pain and stiffness that has been terrorizing you. And imagine finally knowing you have the solution to your herniated disc pain. Well, you may not have to just “imagine” anymore… because… NSSD might start relieving your pain… in just 25 minutes! So, if you’d like to see if you qualify and give this amazing technology a try for free… give April a call at 914259-8104 right now. Why wait one more day in pain when the solution may be one quick phone call away? Call now before someone else gets your free spot. One More Thing It’s Important… Ever since getting this wonderful technology, Dr. Donath’s office has been flooded with calls. For that reason, if when you call, the lines are busy or you go to voice mail… just keep calling back. The possibility of living pain-free is well worth the time and effort it may take you to get through and schedule your appointment. 914-259-8104
