of North Meridian and East Church streets in rented space across the street using old residential refrigerator/freezers. “It was crazy. They were out of people’s garages. We had about five of them lined up,” Ollhoff said. In the early years, the group relied on advice from the organizers of Jordan’s food shelf. They helped the local group avoid the pitfalls of inexperience. Since then, a small army of volunteers has proved invaluable. They work consistent shifts (Wednesdays, 5 to 7 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. to noon). Volunteers even grow produce at a local community garden. In 2012, the food shelf’s board of directors decided to take the plunge and purchase a building across the street. The former movie rental store was available for just under $39,900. Owning a building saved the food shelf money over rental, money the board was able to put into helping a growing number of clients. A big donation from the Belle Plaine Rotary Club helped the food shelf buy new industrial freezers it needed to preserve food longer. The food shelf started a backpack program in 2013 to help students. The program anony-

mously provides over 400 students a week with food. The program served almost 100 elementary school students in its first year before expanding to include younger elementary students. The program was one of the reasons the Belle Plaine Food Shelf was awarded Belle Plaine School District’s Friend of Education Award in 2015.

B.P.’s Benevolence

A generous community has served the growing number of clients the food shelf serves. The major donors of food include Coborn’s, Kwik Trip, Emma Krumbee’s, West Main Donut (Heng’s Bakery), Second Harvest Food Bank, Belle Plaine churches and group food drives. Food drives by churches, schools, local clubs and organizations raised over 13½ tons of food. Overall, the food shelf took in over 60 tons of food in 2015. It gave out over 54 tons in 2015, over 9½ tons per month that year. Monetary donations to the food shelf were not listed on the annual report. “I can’t say enough about the generosity of this community. This community is so generous,” Ollhoff said. “It’s just unbelievable.”
