From Rabbi Alan Berg New Minyan Prayer and Service Havurah Initial Meeting and Introduction on October 28 at 6:30 The Temple as a Caring Community Dear Friends, If you are among our members who seek to have a greater mission of prayer in your life, you might consider attending the introduction to our new Minyan and Service Havurah, for temple members who have been Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Members of our ‘minyan club’ will have the opportunity to:   

Lead Shabbat services. Help with minyanim at members’ homes during Shiva. Support the temple’s outreach to members and Jews in the community who are homebound, in seniors’ residences or in hospitals.

Within the Reform movement there is a recurring emphasis on looking for ways for our temples to be ever more caring communities. At times this can mean visiting a member to place a mezuzah on their home, or making a phone call to say hello and offer a hand. At times there may be a lot of needs, and at others less so, but the most important thing is that the temple will be more ready to serve as needs emerge. The Minyan and Service Havurah is a new vision for Beit Haverim. Our first meeting is on October 28 in the library at the temple at 6:30. Please join us. B’shalom, Rabbi Berg

From Our President, Sue Greenspan

“Be with our brothers and sisters whose lives are made hard because they are Jews.” P. 128, Gates of Prayer, Days of Awe During Rabbi Berg’s sermon on Rosh Hashanah, my mind drifted in thought to the beautiful New Year’s Card that I (Beit Haverim) had just received. The sender mentioned that she had received a Jewish publication in which our address was listed. I am assuming that every synagogue in the Portland area received a card as well; each handwritten and embellished with stickers. The sender, Saskia Stern Lawrence, a former professor of Philosophy, is a patient in a cancer hospital. She is unable to speak, but wrote a lovely message. “ can’t utter a word… but I pray and my Jewish…. ideas go to you… In France, not easy to show ones ideas……” She would like to be remembered. She’d like lots of cards and letters from USA; any age! “ A New Year Holiday Dream!” As we sit in our synagogue, shared with a Christian Church, enjoying our religious freedoms, let us take a minute to remember those Jews, around the world, who are not able to pray aloud. I am enclosing Saskia’s address. Perhaps you might drop her a note and tell her, indeed, her prayers were heard. Simchat Torah Morning Service Tuesday, October 6, 10:00AM Simchat Torah is one of the most joyous of Jewish Holidays; as it marks the completion of the annual cycle of Torah reading. On Simchat Torah, we finish reading the last verses of Deuteronomy, then immediately start the first chapters of Genesis. Following the service there will be a BYO lunch (dessert and beverages provided) in the Sukkah (weather permitting) and discussion. Please plan on joining Rabbi Berg for this first festival weekday service of the year.

Simchat Torah Family Service & Religious School Consecration Friday, October 9, 7:00PM Join us as we unroll the entire Torah around the sanctuary. It's an amazing sight to see! Additionally, we welcome all new Religious School students to come up to the bima to be consecrated. Students will be presented with a mini Torah keepsake. October, 2015

In honor of 

Thank you to Steven Kaufman for your donation

Thank you to Susan & Alan Rothenberg for your donation in honor of Rabbi Berg

Thank you to Marsha Serling Goldberg & Linn Goldberg for your donation in honor of the new year

Donations At Beit Haverim we are often asked the question, “How much does the Rabbi (Temple) charge for officiating at a life cycle event (baby naming, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding, or funeral)? The answer is, “The Rabbi charges nothing.” The Rabbi officiating at these events is just one of the many privileges of membership at Beit Haverim. However, it is a tradition to make a donation to one of the many funds we have established at Beit Haverim in honor of your event. A congregation does not survive on dues alone. It is through your generous donations that many of our programs are able to function. The next time you are called to the Bima to say an Aliyah, dress the Torah, carry the Torah through the congregation, remember it is an honor. Do a Mitzvah and make a donation to the fund of your choice. Click here to make your online donation! Thank you!

Mazel Tov to Naomi Angier for her election to the Clackamas River Water Board She will make policy decisions on the use of water, fees, risk managment and other issues for the customers of Clackamas River Water. Her customers include parts of north Clackamas county and parts of rural Oregon City. Naomi was elected to a 4 year term.

Temple Ride Share Mitzvah Occasionally we hear about a temple member who would like to attend services or a temple event, but is unable to drive. We would like to compile a list of folks by geographic location that would be willing to give a temple member a ride. If you might be able to help with this, give Allison in the office a call at 503-568-1241. Then a temple member could call her and she would know if someone in their area might be able to drive them to the service or event.

Challah Mavens Many of you have asked to join the Challah team. Robin Kay and Erin David have been baking challah for quite some time. It would be nice for others to join in and help out. So here is your chance to volunteer. Email Allison in the office to let her know what week/s you can be the Challah maker. We'll get a schedule going. I'm sure Robin and Erin will appreciate the help! It'll be fun for us all! October, 2015

Tikkun Olam Update Tikkun Olam has several projects going simultaneously. If you want to be a part of the Tikkun Olam committee, please contact Barbara Gold so you can be included in the good works we are doing. 1) Our collection of school supplies was delivered to the Tigard/ Tualatin school district for distribution to their students who needed them. They were very grateful for our help. 2) Our annual food drive for the Oregon Food Bank ends on October 5. If you have not yet brought your non-perishable donations, please be sure to do so. We will report next month on whether we are successful at meeting our optimistic goal! 3) We continue our ongoing projects such as knitzvah...making hats and scarves to be given to needy people at holiday time. We have a nice number of scarves, but we can use many more hats and scarves...so if you are a knitter, grab some of the (free) yarn that is in the fireplace room and join in. 4) Do you speak Russian? Can you help with Thanksgiving and Christmas deliveries of boxes of food and other items to our less fortunate neighbors? Do you have a few hours to visit with lonely elders in the area? There are wonderful volunteer opportunities listed through Jewish Family & Child Services. Click this link to find out how to help. 5) Soon you will be hearing about Beit Haverim's collection of STUFFING MIX to be included in Thanksgiving boxes. When you shop, please pick up a couple of boxes so that we can gather about 150 such boxes or bags to do our share of providing Thanksgiving dinner for our neighbors. 6) We'd like you to be aware that Beit Haverim has signed on the be a member of the Lake Oswego Sustainability Network. Our new member, Lisa Adatto, is a vital part of the ongoing effort to support sustainability, and we hoping to promote its goals in our Temple and in our lives. Here are the 4 main points: * Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community's contribution to fossil fuel dependence and to wasteful use of scarce metals and minerals. Use renew able resources whenever possible. * Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community's contribution to dependence on persistent chemicals and wasteful use of synthetic substances. Use biologically safe products whenever possible. * Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community's contribution to encroachment upon nature (e.g. land, water, wildlife, forests, soil, ecosystems). Protect natural ecosystems. * Support people's capacity to meet their basic needs fairly and efficiently. October, 2015

Coming Up Taste of Melton: A time for every purpose under the Heaven: what is "Jewish time" Sunday, November 8, 2:30PM A Taste of Melton serves to introduce potential students to the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning. Our class will be "A time for every purpose under the Heaven: what is "Jewish time". A full description of the free class will be coming soon and will be part of our Bagel Chat This lesson will focus on the Jewish way to mark and sanctify time. A passage from Abraham Joshua Heschel's book, THE SABBATH: ITS MEANING FOR MODERN MAN will help us better understand how one can create sacred time as opposed to sacred places.
