Beit Haverim is an open, inviting, and spiritually alive Jewish community, located just outside of Portland, Oregon in Lake Oswego. We welcome everyone to our Reform congregation of Jews by birth, Jews by choice and Jews at heart.

Letter From Our President, Sue Greenspan Family Families – we all have them. The first family we associate ourselves with is the family we are born or adopted into. This family is responsible for our first learning experiences -- teaching us right from wrong, how to ride a bike, tie our shoes, and recite the blessing over the challah on Shabbat. As we grow older, we learn that our world is filled with different kinds of families. We associate ourselves with sports teams, learning rules of sportsmanship and getting along with others. We join service organizations that teach us compassion for helping less fortunate. We associate with social groups such as fraternities and sororities in college that often help us find our place in an overwhelming world. Another family that we encounter during our lifetime is our Spiritual Family. You may ask, “How is Beit Haverim family?” First of all, the name Beit Haverim means “House of Friends, A Community to All.” This spiritual family encompasses all the aforementioned families. It is the family that teaches your children the tenets of our faith -- stories from the Torah, the holiday traditions that we all love, songs that we sing at our services, and the language of our ancestors. Beit Haverim, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Confirmation, Adult B’nai Mitzvahs and rituals. In times of need we are there, helping to plan a funeral, sitting shiva, or maybe just providing a shoulder to cry on. Families play together. With your Beit Haverim family, you can enjoy monthly Ladies’ Nights, Men’s Club Activities, Shabbat Potluck Dinners, Mah Jongg, knitting groups, choir, and Saturday evening Havdalah Services. How about bringing your Pup to a Friday Night Service in the Park, or come have a cup of coffee and a nosh at Torah Study on a Saturday morning? Do you like to cook and to bake? Join the Latke Mavens as they fry latkes for the annual Chanukah dinner or bake hamentaschens for the Purim Carnival. Like all family members, Beit Haverim members have a familial responsibility to the Synagogue. Giving donations to the temple is not enough. It is why we give that is important -- what lessons we can teach our children about the importance of the continuation of the Jewish faith, the State of Israel, and Congregation Beit Haverim. The Jews have cut out a small niche in communities. In order for the Jewish population to thrive, we must all band together and do whatever is necessary to keep growing and expanding our own culture. The ability of our temple to exist and be admired can only be accomplished by banding together and continue to move forward. The contributions you make (either monetarily, service directed, or spiritually) all go to the end goal of making Beit Haverim a strong and viable family we can all be proud to call our own. We have a wonderful Rabbi, whose messages week after week inspire us, a Cantor whose dulcet tones inspire us, a strong Board of Trustees to insure that our congregation continues to grow and prosper, and most importantly the hope that each individual congregant will become a part of our family. L’Shalom, Sue Greenspan July, 2014

Events in July Birthday Blessings at Shabbat Services Beginning in July, Rabbi is adding a special component to his first Shabbat service of the month. All members who celebrate their birthday during the month are invited to come up to the bima to receive a birthday blessing. About a week before the service, you will receive a reminder email inviting you and your family members to attend this service. If you don’t receive a reminder, or if we don’t include a family member who’s celebrating a birthday that month, please email the office to add that person to our list. Ritual Meeting Tuesday, July 1, 10:00AM Location: Beit Haverim Ritual meeting to plan for the High Holy Days. Come join the fun! Get to know your new ritual chair, Karin Stolz and help us plan for the new things we have in store this year.

Ladies Night Tuesday, July 15, 6:30PM Location: home of Karin Stolz Address will be given when you RSVP to Karin 971-219-3484. Please join us for our summer potluck dinner on the lovely deck of the Stolz's. Bring a favorite summer dish to share. Bring a friend or a member. Havdalah in the Park Saturday, July 19, 7:30PM This FAMILY service will be held at Willamette Park (by the River) Location: Willamette Park, 1100 12th Street, West Linn, OR 97068 Please note this is not the Lake Oswego Willamette park. Look for the blue and white balloons! Our Shabbat starts with the lighting of candles and it concludes the same way. The Havdalah Service separates the Shabbat from the working week. Join Rabbi Berg and Beit Haverim as we celebrate the ending of Shabbat at Willamette Park. Come early and let the children wade in the fountain or place on the play structure. Chat with your friends. Please bring a dessert to share. Beverages will be provided.

Recap of June Events Basket Auction Wrap Up On Saturday, June 7th, Beit Haverim held our annual fundraiser -- a basket auction and get-together at the gorgeous home of Rita and Steve Sherman. With beautiful weather and lots of laughter and talking, we ate, drank and bid on baskets, all while raising money for our temple. Click here to view our facebook album. It was a wonderful social event, and we reached our financial goal of $3,048. Thank you to everyone involved in the basket auction, including the committee: Karin Stolz, Sue Greenspan, Rita Sherman, Barbara Gold, Barbara Gray, Francia Trosty, Dena Gutterman, Michelle Minch, Gabrielle Williams, Janet Sahni, Stacy Epsteen, Claire Frye, Alan Cohen, and Rabbi Berg. A special thank you to all our wonderful donors who made this auction possible. We couldn't have done it without you

Committee Update Hello Friends, As the new head of Tikkun Olam for Beit Haverim, I am excited to continue some of the great work that has been ongoing for some time now and perhaps to institute a couple of new projects. Knitters, please keep knitting whatever you can for our "Knitzvah project" for which we knit scarves, hats and whatever other items you can manage for folks who are homeless. We are beginning to plan now for our major food gathering drive. As always, Beit Haverim will collect non-perishable items to fill special bags beginning on the High Holidays. We will keep you posted when we determine what the Oregon Food Bank sees as the most pressing needs closer to mid-September. It's always easier....and a great activity for children...to choose and buy one or two items each time you go to the store between now and then. Just think how many items you will have painlessly bought! We know that protein sources are always high on the list, so peanut butter, canned tuna, and other items with protein are highly desirable. I look forward to sharing other projects with you in the future. Barbara Gold, Tikkun Olam Chair Mazel Tov! Mazel Tov to Joel Callagan, Michael and Helene Callagan's son, who graduated from Tulane University in May with a double major in business management and Finance. He is currently working in a post graduate program at Northwest Mutual in Lake Oswego and his goal is to begin a career in finance. While at Tulane, Joel served as president of Chabad on campus and was able to make many Jewish friends and explore a different way of celebrating Judaism. He had an amazing experience at Tulane and would be glad to talk to anyone about Tulane and his current goals.

Get Involved! Beit Haverim Cookbook We are in the process of compiling a Beit Haverim Cookbook. Please submit your favorite recipe. It could be an everyday family favorite or a special treat for a holiday. You can submit as many as you wish. We would like recipes by the end of the month, so we can publish before the New Year. It would be a shame if your recipe were left out. If you can a question give one of the following ladies a call. If you have any questions call or email: Suzanne Causer (317) 694-3957 Karin Stolz (971) 219-3484 Sue Greenspan (503) 691-0370

Knitzvah! We are again knitting/crocheting hats, cowls, headbands and scarves for Lift Urban. They host a party every December for low income adults living in NW and Downtown Portland. This helps keep folks warm and it is often the only gift they receive all year. We have yarn at Beit Haverim that you can use. It is a basket in the fireside room. Last year we were able to give 47 items. It would be great to increase that number. Any questions, call Karin Stolz. Thank you so much for being part of this worthwhile project
