Spring Cleaning: Getting the Spring back in your home. At this time of year, many of you may be thinking about Spring Cleaning. But is it something you never really get round to? Let's face it, you probably already spend a large proportion of your week taking care of your home, do you really want to add even more work to that never ending list? Some jobs in the home are really just TOO BIG, and in order to get them done properly you need to enlist the help of a professional. That's where Breedon Carpet Care can help. Deep cleaning carpets is not particularly straight forward, even if you own or hire a machine, it is very easy to make costly mistakes. So if your carpet is looking decidedly grubby after the winter and you want to get it clean again, it's a good idea to call Breedon Carpet Care. Here at Breedon Carpet Care, we've been cleaning carpets and soft furnishings for over 15 years. We’re not general cleaners who occasionally clean carpets, or worse, subcontract carpet cleaning to a third party. A large percentage of our work comes from people we've cleaned for before or their friends/family on recommendation. Don't think that because the carpet is being cleaned that you have to empty all of the furniture out. WE move furniture. Items such as the suite and dining table we can move around in the room. You don't need to completely empty your room. All we ask is you move the lighter items such as toys and lamps, small tables etc. We'll move the rest, ... for further information, please contact Chris at Breedon Carpet Care see advert below

“ You Get The Most Thorough Clean Ever Seen Or It’s Free”! That’s right, the most thorough cleaning ever. My carpet and upholstery cleaning is the best and most thorough you could ever have – if you don’t agree I won’t accept your payment.

Along with the purchase of your home and family car, your soft furnishings are one of the largest investments you will make. Professional cleaning of your furnishings on a regular basis will extend their life considerably as well as keeping them hygienic and looking good.

4 Reasons Why You Should Choose My Company To Clean & Protect Your Family’s Health 1. Thorough Cleaning – My method doesn’t leave any residue or cause shrinkage. It cleans down to the base of your carpet removing harmful bacteria leaving your carpet clean and healthy.

2. Honest Pricing – I promise no high-pressure sales gimmicks. The prices I quote you are fully inclusive of cleaning products and labour. A full complete clean AND no hidden extras.

3. Protection of your soft Furnishings - Your valuable soft furnishings will stay cleaner longer, vacuum easier and have improved stain resistance with our carpet and upholstery protectors.

4. Long Standing Reputation – My company enjoys a reputation which is second to none, many of our customers not only come back to us time and again but recommend us to their family and friends.

Care and Support at Home - Nottingham Post Carers Award – Our Winners Dedicated, hardworking and endlessly kind- hearted are the words Nottingham Post used to describe our devoted CAREGiver at the Nottingham Post’s first ever Care Awards in Nottingham hosted by Smooth 106.6 presenter Gareth Evans. The event celebrated the hard work and often hours of unpaid work of thousands of young and adult carers in categories such as Care Home Worker of the Year, Home Carer of the Year, Dementia Carer of the Year and New Professional Carer. Home Instead Senior Care nominated Marie Fisher in the New Professional Carer category and Carol Symonds for the Dementia Carer of the Year award and we were not surprised when Marie fisher was named as a finalist for the New Professional Carer. There were many reasons for celebration as Home Instead was proud to showcase the talent and professional attributes of their workforce represented by three nominated CAREGivers. Marie Fisher – New Professional Carer (Finalist) - A former taxi driver, has been a CAREGiver for the past 18 months, working as a field supervisor for Home Instead. Marie, who also worked in retail, has transferred her customer her skills to become a great asset to the team and has shown she can deal with complex situations. Marie has demonstrated a high level of desire and professionalism to ensure our clients receive quality care. Carol Symonds - Dementia Carer of the year (Nominated) - Carol was part of a team who supported a challenging client through the dementia transitional phase 2-3. Carol demonstrated understanding, professionalism and provided person centred approach care to enable the client to remain independent and living at home for as long as possible. Carol also showed compassion and offered emotional support to family members as they came to terms with losing a loved one to Dementia. Carol always saw the person and not the condition which again made her the perfect match to the client. She is one remarkable CAREGiver who is always at the end of the phone if she is needed. Philip Newton – Home Instead Senior CAREGiver of the Year (Winner) - Phil was nominated along with many other CAREGiver for their continuous and dedicated work with clients. Phil is currently studying Bio-chemistry at Nottingham Trent University and enjoys being a CAREGiver during the evenings and weekends. Phil was selected as CAREGiver of the year for his ability to go the extra mile with his clients, he often researches client’s interests and hobbies to encourage and stimulate them. Using his local knowledge and witty sense of humour Phil brightens up his client’s day. Phil is reliable and constantly provides the highest level of service to all clients and has the ability to adapt his approach to suit their individual needs. We are looking for CAREGivers who can help us to assist people with non medical services including Companionship, Home Help and Personal Care in their own home. If you are dedicated, have a caring and compassionate nature and a genuine desire to work in an environment where you will be helping others then please get in touch. We offer full training, 10 to 25+ flexible working hours to include evening and weekends, excellent pay, healthcare cash plan and paid holidays. Primo.Sule@homeinstead.co.uk - Tel: 0115 9222116

So, should the minimum age for voting be reviewed? In the majority of the world it is 18 and it seems to work. Getting people involved and thinking about politics at the age of 18 is great but does this mean it is correct? We could get more people actively involved if the age was lowered, as this would create more interest. However it would create a problem due to it being extremely difficult to assess at what age people are ready and it would be both time consuming and expensive. Whatever the voting age may be, most will find it a privilege to vote. Being in a democracy is brilliant but as young people we should use the vote wisely and ideally take an interest in current affairs and politics to make informed and educated decisions. But even for those of us under the age of 18 who cannot vote in the EU referendum, we should still take an interest in what is happening around us politically, so that when the time does eventually come we can take part in the democratic process on an informed basis. Grapevine Tips Time Saving 1. Cook for more than one meal whenever possible... this gets you some “no cooking required” meals stashed in the freezer so you don’t have to cook every night. 2. Clean your sink and toilet at the same time as you bath your kids. You can watch the kids and get some cleaning done at the same time. 3. Stubborn stickers can be a breeze to remove with the help of a hair dryer. The hot air from the dryer helps soften the glue and in many cases you can easily pull stickers off bedroom doors, walls and even glass jars and containers. 4. Keep your toiletries in a waterproof container, IKEA have some great sizes. This means you can just lift up the container and wipe underneath rather than uplifting loads of bottles. It makes your bathroom look neat & tidy too. 5. Break down your cleaning tasks to short bursts of time. For example – do 15 minutes in the kitchen rather than 4 hours to clean the whole house. You will find you complete more in the short burst of time and feel more motivated having fully completed your task. Once that is done, do something rewarding, say for 10 mins, make a drink , a quick phone call and then tackle another cleaning task for 15 mins at another time. 6. If you can, walk the dog at the same time as doing the school run, that can save another two hours out of your day. 7. Team up with a friend and take it

32

in turns to look after each other’s children. Your tot gets to play with a friend for the morning, and you get time to yourself – for free! 8. Shop for groceries online, this saves so much time and fuel! A great idea is to bulk buy a few of the items on your list and share the cost with a friend or family member. Or bulk buy for yourself, if you haven’t got space in the kitchen or a pantry to store, use the garage, put a shelf in the shed, utility room or in cellar (if you have one) to store long term items. 9. Invest in a slow cooker, saves so much time, especially if you work full time, or busy at home with young children. 10. Cut down on clutter by taking toys your tot no longer plays with to a charity shop, or sell them at a car boot sale or on eBay. Then split those you’ve kept, and put some away for later. Young children concentrate better when they have a few good toys rather than an overwhelming choice, and you’ll spend less time tidying! 11.How often do you start a task only to be derailed by an incoming email? Set specific times to check your messages, say every hour The limit will help you concentrate on what you’re doing so you can be faster and more efficient with the time you spend on work.

Book Review by Clare Lyons Babyopathy by Angela J Spencer This is complete indulgence on my part as baby four has

been welcomed into our family – and I was given this book as a gift. It’s quite interesting especially if you are ‘into’ complementary medicine and that type of thing. It was a lovely gift, and if you have someone expecting and are thinking of a present a book is a great idea – but they probably won’t have time to really read a long novel so something with pictures. Babyopathy looks at how babies develop, the key milestone of life, the needs of both mother and child and offers a huge range of ideas and insights that were well presented. Although I’m not a big fan of crystals etc – there is much more to the book, and it goes up to weaning so covers a large amount of time. There are helpful contact details at the end, and some no-nonsense basic values to prove it’s not all new-age mumbo jumbo! The book is clear and easy to read, with good use of illustration, graphs and colour.

Children‛s Choice Strictly No Crocs by Heather Pindar The Crocs on the Savannah have a bit of reputation, so they are not invited to Zebra’s fancy dress party… however they decide to go in disguise so they can ruin everything. It turns out that they have so much fun they forget to cause trouble! It’s a great story with really fun and engaging illustrations. We laughed a lot while reading this, and enjoyed looking at the smaller elements in the pictures. We also discussed that it’s sometimes hard to invite people we don’t like to a party, and how our behaviour influences how people feel about us. It was a good read for those old enough to understand the more complex elements – but worked on a lower level for the younger ones too. www.mrsaverageevaluates.wordpress.com

Mon 23 & Tues 24 May 2016 at 8pm Gary Clarke Company – COAL

All of us owe the comparative decency to poor drudges underground, blackened to the eyes with their throats full of coal dust, driving their shovels forward with arms and belly muscles of steel” George Orwell (1934) Marking the 30th anniversary of the end of the 1984/5 British miners’ strike, award winning choreographer Gary Clarke proudly presents COAL, a riveting dance theatre show which takes an nostalgic look at the hard hitting realities of life at the coal face. Strong, powerful and emotive, COAL explores the darker underbelly of the mining industry unearthing the true nature and body wrecking demands of a working class industry now almost forgotten.

38

Bringing together Clarke’s striking physical language performed by a company of 7 high class dancers, a local community cast of women and a live colliery brass band, COAL is an emotional, moving and ever-relevant exploration of community, solidarity and survival.“One of the most powerful, moving pieces of theatre I’ve ever seen on the miners strike”. Ex miner (preview July 2015).

Tuesday 31 May & Wednesday 1 June 2016 Lawrence and Williams By Night And By Day In 2014 in Texas, Dr Gerri Kimber unearthed a short unfinished Tennessee Williams play depicting four real life friends: Katherine Mansfield, John Middleton Murry, Frieda Lawrence and DH Lawrence. This staged reading is the first time the text has been performed in public. Paired with Lawrence’s autobiographical play, The Fight for Barbara, the evening offers a unique insight into two great writers and two overlooked plays. Nottingham Centre – Summer Programme 2016 The Nottingham Centre's winter programme of talks will end on April 28th with a talk by Beccy Speight (formerly of National Trust) about the continuing work of the Woodland Trust. Talks will begin again in September. However, members have a variety of excursions, walks and holidays to keep them busy during the summer: Excursions to look forward to include a visit to Eyam Hall (NT) and the Cascades Garden, on Wed. July 13th. Yorkgate Garden and East Riddlesden Hall – Mon. August 15th. And on Thursday, June 23rd, a visit to The Wimpole Estate, Cambridgeshire. Building of the Hall began in 1640 and it became the largest house in the county. It was bought in 1938 by George and Elsie Bainbridge Elsie was the daughter of Rudyard Kipling (the writer, not the cake maker).

The Local and Family History Group visits include the National Civil War Centre in Newark, June 28th, Flintham Museum, with guided walk, August 1st and Nottingham Civic Society Heritage Walk on September 1st. A highlight of the Garden Group's activities will be a visit to the garden of Stuart Dixon, of Radio Nottingham on Friday, 15th July. In addition two holidays are planned, one to Cardiff and South Wales in June, and one to Scarborough and North Yorkshire in September. So – there is something for everyone, but the holidays and excursions get booked up fast so don't delay. New members are always welcome to join this friendly organisation which supports the work of the National Trust. NEW COUNTRY TRAIL FOR BROXTOWE A BRAND NEW walking and cycling route was officially opened following many months of work to launch the Broxtowe Country Trail. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw launched the new trail, which is 27 miles of walking and cycling routes which connects with the Erewash Valley Trail, alongside partners from Nottingham City Council. The Broxtowe Country Trail zigzags across Broxtowe’s boundary with the city and because of its connections with the Erewash Valley Trail, means it is possible to circumnavigate Broxtowe using these trails. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “The opening of the Broxtowe Country Trail is a very exciting day for Broxtowe after many months of hard work to establish a new walking and cycling route in the borough. “This is the first new trail in Broxtowe for a long time and we hope that local people from across Nottinghamshire will enjoy using it and its beautiful surroundings. Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Growth, Jobs and Transport at Nottingham City Council, said: “The Broxtowe Trail offers another great cycling

46

and walking route to journey through the city and into local countryside. The City Council is pleased to be involved in this project which encourages people to cycle for fun. This will encourage more people to choose cycling as their preferred travel mode for commuting to work as well.” “The new trail offers a great way for people to either walk or get on their bikes and enjoy the best of what Nottinghamshire and its countryside has to offer,” said Councillor Kevin Greaves, Chairman of the County Council’s Transport and Highways Committee. “By linking up with the Erewash Valley Trail it provides people with a number of options for getting out and about locally, whether it’s a short stroll or something a bit more challenging.” This project was developed through a partnership led by Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council. Other partners have also been vital in the delivery of the project including Derby City Council, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, Amber Valley Borough Council, Pedals, Ridewise, Ashfield District Council and Sustrans.
