As we noted last month, resolutions are made to be broken. But it’s difficult to stop yourself from taking the energy and the high that come from a vacation and trying to turn them into something beautiful and lasting: a new idea or venture or direction. When you start with the smallest seed of an idea and then build upon it steadily, the growth takes on its own momentum and requires less of yours. Haven’t you ever seen those agro-science experiments where they measure the weight a squash can press upwards as it’s growing out of the earth? Well, let’s just say that if you were next to one in the gym you’d be cooing over its muscles. The point is, you don’t have to hit the ground with a success; you have to hit it with something meaningful that you’re willing to work on. And if you should hit some snags and find yourself cursing your inability to remain as cool and collected as the Eastern philosophers always seem to be, remember that sometimes a monk is just a guy in a robe.
